Aspiring concert violist Emmaline Aurora Grace Andrews is torn between her love of family and her love of music. A year ago, she deferred entering a prestigious graduate program to help her parents recover from a devastating accident. Now the deferment is expiring, but her parents still need her. Worse, every time she plays her audition piece, she mangles it. Is it too late to be the musician she’d always dreamed of? Should she even try?

Determined to get clarity, Emmaline accepts a friend’s offer for a whirlwind European vacation. First Stop: a real live fantasy kingdom—the perfect place to sort wishes from reality.

Prince Kristos Andris was a respected captain in his nation’s military… Was. In the wake of the tragic death of his elder brother, he’s managed to avoid his duties as the new Crown Prince of Garronia for months. But now he must accept his responsibilities and leave his troops behind. Outraged at the restrictions of his new royal position, he’ll do anything for one last adventure. So when opportunity suddenly lands in his arms in the form of a dreamy-eyed American girl, he embraces it (and her) for all he’s worth. What’s the harm in a quick fling, after all? It won’t change what he knows he must do…

Only this is Garronia in the summertime, where passion has a way of ruining even the most sensible of plans.

Interview with Jennifer Chance, author of COURTED!

Jacquie, thanks so much for hosting me today at JBiggerBlog! I appreciate the chance to talk a bit about COURTED, and about my writing process.

Do you outline your books or wing it?

I’d like to say that I outlined, but I don’t. My “outline” is more of an understanding of what the book’s major plot points/turning points will be, and some hazy idea of the ending. Then I start writing and it becomes much more of a “wing it” process!

Describe your process.

Typically it takes me a few weeks to kick a book around in my head, 3-4 weeks to draft the first version, and then another few weeks to edit it so that it somewhat resembles the final version. Then I send the book to a professional editor and wait for her keen insights to help guide the revision!

How do you decide on setting?

I think each story helps you decide that question. In the case of COURTED, I knew I wanted an exotic location for my fairytale kingdom, but still somewhere in Europe, since I’m more familiar with it than other continents. I wanted someplace warm… by the ocean… and voila! Garronia was born, on the edge of Greece.

What genre(s) do you write in? Why?

I write contemporary romance as Jennifer Chance, urban fantasy as Jenn Stark, and young adult as Jennifer McGowan. I love all three genres because each helps me explore stories in unique ways. As Chance I get to indulge in over-the-top romance, as Stark I take on gritty paranormal adventures, and as McGowan I currently am writing Elizabethan spy stories. I love the diversity and change of pace!

What is your favorite part of writing?

I most enjoy the idea stage before I begin—where everything is pure potential. Next in line is the first draft stage, which is fast and furious.

What is your least favorite part of writing?

That would be editing! When you write quickly, you tend to edit slowly, and that’s my process as well. Editing always expands to fill the available hours, and you’re never finished with it, it seems!

Some writers edit excessively as they write; others wait until a novel is finished to do the bulk of editing. How about you?

I edit after the novel is finished. I rue this every time as I launch into the editing process, but that’s the way I roll!

What’s the strangest thing you have ever done in the name of research?

Fall in love with a prince?

Okay, but seriously, the weirdest thing for me was in the process of researching my paranormal/urban fantasy series (written as Jenn Stark). There may have been a visit to a voodoo shop for that, and I may have learned about magical practices, and I may have experimented a bit with some tools of the trade. But only a future book will tell!

E-books, print, or both? Any preferences? Why?

Both! I like print for collecting and quiet days at home (and beach reading!) and I like e-books for travel, reading late at night when I can’t sleep, and anytime I’m stuck in a line. Except when I’m driving in traffic, of course. 🙂 Both e-books and print books are invaluable to me at this point, and I think both will continue to thrive as fiction formats!

Thanks again, Jacquie, for hosting me today!
