GENRE: Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00023]
With his dying breath, Bobby Lowell begs Ellison Russell, “Tell her I love her.”
Unable to refuse, Ellison struggles to find the girl the murdered boy loved. Too bad an epically bad blind date, a vindictive graffiti artist, and multiple trips to the emergency room keep getting in the way.
Worse, a killer has Ellison in his sights, her newly-rebellious daughter is missing, and there’s yet another body in her hostas. Mother won’t be pleased.
Now Ellison must track down not one but two runaway teenagers, keep her promise to Bobby and elude the killer—all before her next charity gala committee meeting.
Excerpt:
The nurse led me to a room with real walls, paused outside the real door, then offered me a gentle pat on the shoulder. “Is there someone I can call to come pick you up?”
I shook my head. Libba was taking care of Grace. I’d talked to them both, assured a teary Grace I was fine and promised to be home soon. Calling any of my other friends would mean a lengthy explanation. I had only one explanation in me and it was reserved for the police. “No, thank you.”
“Not your husband?”
“I’m a widow.”
She sucked in a breath. “I’m sorry.”
I wasn’t. Even if he was still alive, it was unlikely Henry would have gone to the trouble of picking me up from the hospital. “Thank you for offering. When I’m done, I’ll call a cab.”
I smoothed the loose folds of my shirt. Why did I never talk to the police looking polished or put together? Then I entered the room.
Detective Anarchy Jones sat at the table inside.
My feet stopped moving forward, my intestines defied the laws of science and turned from solid to liquid in the time it took me to blink. My knees no longer seemed strong enough to support me. Only my mouth continued to function. “What are you doing here?” I lifted my unbandaged hand to cover it before it said anything else.
Detective Jones stood. A smile that webbed the corners of his eyes and quirked his lips ghosted across his lean face. “The usual. Investigating a murder where you found the body.”
I’m so excited to have Julie on the blog today. I’m a big fan or her writing and we belong to a suspense group that we’re both proud of, The Sisters of Suspense.
Julie kindly agreed to answer my nosy informative questions 🙂
What do you write?
I write mysteries set in 1974 among the country club set in Kansas City, Missouri and historical romance set in New Orleans in the early 1900s.
What genre do you favor?
I adore mysteries!
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in seventh grade, my English teacher suggested I should be a writer. It took me a while, but I finally did it!
What do you think is the best way to publish these days?
There are so many different paths to publication, it’s nearly impossible to identify the best way. The reality? What works well for one writer might be completely wrong for another.
What are your favorite genres to read? Why?
I love mysteries. I always have. There’s something very satisfying about finding a solution to a thorny puzzle.
Do your characters talk to you?
No. I talk to them.
How do you approach starting a new book?
I love the beginning of a book. Everything is bright and shiny and exciting. And then comes the middle…ugh.
What is your writing process?
I get up early to write and I always have the last ten pages of my MS with me. I’ve been known to edit at stoplights.
What are the best writing books or blogs you’ve ever read?
Writing Screenplays that Sell by Michael Hauge is invaluable to any writer. His ideas on story structure are genius. I use his percentages whenever I’m planning a book.
What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?
Hobbies? Writing was my hobby. Now I have deadlines, a family and a full-time job. I don’t anticipate a new hobby anytime soon.
What was your best date ever?
When I met my husband, I knew. Our first date was nothing special, dinner and a movie, but I knew it was the beginning of everything so each moment was very special.
Navy SEAL or cowboy?
Cowboy.
Chocolate or chips?
Chocolate, even though I’m allergic.
If you could have a superpower what would it be? Why?
Super speed. I’d love to write faster.
Fancy restaurant or picnic?
Fancy restaurant. I don’t like the bugs that dive-bomb me whenever I eat outside.
Beer or wine?
Wine.
Favorite author? One?
This is impossible…Marian Keyes, Gretchen Archer, Susan Boyer, Phoebe Fox, Pat Conroy…
Smooth or hairy?
Smooth
