Is it possible for a poor hash-house waitress to find love with a wealthy Irish horse breeder?  Not as long as he thinks she conned his father into leaving her his cottage on the island of Inish Mor in the Aran Islands.  To prove his assumption false, Samantha St. John sells her new inheritance to Kieran McDade for one Euro, receives his thank-you kiss on her cheek, and bids him farewell.

Never expecting to see him again, she is surprised to receive his invitation and a plane ticket to Ireland.  He’s had second thoughts and offers Samantha a holiday at his home on FastTrack Farm where she charms not only his race horse, but Kieran himself.  For Samantha, it is like a fairy tale, complete with a wicked witch, an elegant ball, and a horse race that could decide whether her Cinderella story will have a happy ending.

Excerpt:

Kieran watched Samantha approach Niall, leading the filly. What on earth was she doing? He needed Lifetime to concentrate on the goal. Now was not the time for distractions. The stallion shook his head, pranced in a circle calling to the filly. She answered. Much to Kieran’s surprise, Lifetime cantered eagerly to his place at the starting pole. At Niall’s signal, he gave the horse his head and went along for the ride. Very little urging was needed at the curve. All out seemed to be the only speed in Lifetime’s current repertoire.

Niall’s face was all smiles as Kieran approached him. He held up his stop watch. “He runs like that in the Derby, he’ll break the record.”

Kieran dismounted, still so dumbfounded, he couldn’t find his voice. He walked the stallion toward Samantha. She waved. The horse whinnied. Maid of Honor responded.

She patted Lifetime’s neck. “He did good, didn’t he?”

Kieran nodded, staring at her. He smiled, cleared his throat. “Very good.”

A grin lit her face. “Well, my dad used to say there wasn’t a male, man or beast, that wouldn’t perform at his best with a lady watching.”

Kieran stroked the stallion’s nose. “We are such predictable creatures, aren’t we?”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Growing up, I wrote a few things for school—reports and a few creative writing projects for English class—but never really thought about writing novels until after I married my David. Even then, what little writing I did leaned toward Mystery. I didn’t discover Romance until my husband and I traveled to Greece. It was hot—I mean really hot—and we ducked inside the Athens Hilton to bask in their air conditioned gift shop. I was looking at a rack of paperback books and picked up one entitled Born in Fire by someone named Sarah Hardesty. I stayed in our air-conditioned hotel room for two days reading that novel nearly non-stop and decided then and there what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to write Romance. It wasn’t until I was back home and hunting through a Barnes and Noble for more books by Sarah Hardesty that I learned the author was actually Nora Roberts. Truthfully, I had never heard of her. I know who she is now. And who knows, maybe someday, she will have heard of me.

As Jayne Nichols, I write contemporary romance (Wish Fulfilled Series) and romantic suspense (Madrona Point Series), and I love every minute of it.

  1. Good morning, Jacquie. Thank you so much for hosting me today. I’ll be in and out periodically during the day. Visitors, please feel free to comment, ask me a question, of just say hi. Jayne

      1. I grew up on a farm, and horses were my first love. I read a true story about two horses being separated very young but who, when reunited many years later, still recognized each other. It stayed with me and seemed a natural for Lifetime and Maid of Honor.

  2. Your excerpt was enjoyable.. And I like the idea of a kind, unselfish heroine. Not every heroine has to be snotty to do well in life!
It’s interesting how we discover romance. I saw a super-intriguing title on a paperback once, picked it up, and was pretty much swept away. 😀

    1. Yes, I think that’s how it happened for me too, Mary 🙂 One of the first romances I ever read was called The Flame and the Flower. After reading that title I had to find out the rest of the story, 🙂

  3. I enjoyed the excerpt. I’m wondering what the heroine did for the old man that made him want to leave her his cottage on the island. I like the idea of a kind, gentle heroine. 😀

    1. Oh, yes. In fact I worked for a man once many years ago, and considering how many enemies he had, I wondered why he wasn’t dead. I started a book with him in mind, wrote nine chapters, but never finished it. I discovered Romance and decided to go that route. I will have two Romantic Suspense novels out later this year (fingers crossed). However, one of Jayne’s other faces, Jordan Dymes (see my website at http://www.nicholsanddymes.com) has a mystery series in the works.

  4. Although my mother has read Dorthy Garlock and Debbie Macomber, I have never read a romance novel until Once in a Lifetime. And I couldn’t put it down! Samantha is a rather refreshing heroine versus a lot of the so called romances that are depicted in television and film. Kindness most certainly goes a long way and it’s something that isn’t often displayed so beautifully as it is in this book.

  5. Like watts1013, I couldn’t put it down! I started reading in the afternoon & didn’t stop until the following morning! It flows quickly, great imagery – horses & horse racing, Irish pub with music, grand ball, Ireland’s stone fences & cottages. It’s packed with “little stories”. Once Upon A Lifetime is just delightful!

    1. Hi, Cathy. If I could, I’d do a back flip right now. I took a two-week tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Did lots of pub hopping and saw many stone fences and beautiful cottages. Sprinkled in some imagination and put it all together to write both books in this series. I’m so thrilled you enjoyed it.

  6. The day is drawing to a close. Time to join my hubby for dinner. Thank you so much for hosting me, Jacquie. I’ve had a wonderful time. You’ve sent my first ever blog tour off with a bang. My thanks to everyone who joined in and commented. I hope those of you who haven’t read Once in a Lifetime will consider purchasing it, and I wish you all luck in the drawing.

    1. Good questions, Peggy. When I’m working on a novel, I try for a daily minimum of six hours – 10:00 to 5:00. No particular word count, though I do like to finish a scene or a chapter. I shoot for two chapters a week, and I usually have the story completely planned before I start. I save the weekends to review and spend time with my hubby.
