Mist
by Emily Mims
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romance/romantic suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The widow of a lying drug dealer, dulcimer-player Kylie Barstow Richards finds herself struggling to see through the mist of the Smoky Mountains to the truth-about her life, about the nightclub where she works, and about the bluegrass-playing musician who has arrived to steal her heart.
EXCERPT
Kylie looked Ren in the eye. “How much of that is the truth and how much of it was bullshit?”
Ren’s lips firmed. “It’s the truth, every damned bit of it. And that’s also why I did what I did. The DEA honestly thought you were guilty. A drug dealer took out one of my best friends, Kylie. I’ve missed Jerry every day for the last two years.”
“And that justifies what you did to me? Sorry, Ren. Not buying it. And I don’t care what your reasons for lying were, a liar is a liar. And I can’t stand liars.”
“I get that, Kylie. Look, obviously we blew it, and I’m just as sorry as I can be that I hurt you.”
“If you can be believed, which I seriously doubt.”
“I do mean it. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.”
“I am, too, Ren. I was just beginning to have a little bit of faith and trust again and you very effectively managed to take that away from me. Congratulations. I will probably never trust another man as long as I live.”
“Aw, Kylie, no.” Ren leaned forward. “Look, I know there is no way I can take back the lies I’ve already told. But I can promise you this. I will never, ever lie to you again about anything.”
Kylie shrugged. “And now I’m supposed to believe that? Ren, I’m sorry. The damage is done. The trust is broken. Kind of like Humpty Dumpty.”
“I understand. But Kylie, I’m going to tell you the truth from now on whether you believe me or not.”
“Knock yourself out.”

I caught up to Emily just as she was about to head out for band practice and begged her for an interview. She kindly agreed 🙂
What do you think is the best way to publish these days?
I still prefer a traditional publisher. I need the rigorous editing provided by the traditional process that is all too frequently missing in the indie world.
What are your favorite genres to read? Why?
Romance! That’s how I got started as a writer-I was a reader first.
Do your characters talk to you?
Absolutely! They come alive in my head.
How do you approach starting a new book?
Hopefully, with a good story involving both external and internal conflict in an interesting setting or ‘world’.
What is your writing process?
I sit down with a Big Chief and flesh out my story in a detailed, chapter by chapter synopsis. I sit down and write it chapter by chapter with both along-the-way revisions and another go-through when I’m finished. And then off to the beta reader and the editors!
What are the best writing books or blogs you’ve ever read?
Honestly? My best instruction came from my old Candlelight editor Lydia Paglio. She basically taught me to write over the phone back in 1983.
What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?
I play piano, organ, dulcimer and ukulele. (Yes, I play the music my characters play in ‘Mist’.)
What was your best date ever?
Mexico City, 1970. Field trip. Dinner in a swanky rooftop restaurant with my fellow field tripper who had popped the question five days after our first date and who had just put an amethyst to-hold-me engagement ring on my finger. (We’re still together, by the way. Married for forty-five years.)
Navy SEAL or cowboy?
Love ‘em both. Interestingly, most of my wounded warrior heroes in the ‘Texas Hill Country’ series were Army and Texas A&M alumni.
Chocolate or chips?
Chips. Corn chips with guacamole or pico de gallo.
If you could have a superpower what would it be? Why?
Longevity. So much to see and do, so little time!
Fancy restaurant or picnic?
Neither. Good food at an outdoor café, either sidewalk or overlooking a lake or ocean.
Beer or wine?
Pino grigio. Cold. Crisp.
Favorite author?
You’re gonna make me pick? Okay, Nora Roberts.

Enjoyed reading your interview today. Wondering about your inspiration for the title of this book. Makes me think there might be a paranormal twist to it. Tell us about it.

Thanks to both my hostess and Goddess Fish for having me today. The inspiration for this title came from the mist that shrouds the Smoky Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. From the distance the mountains appear to be enveloped in a smoky kind of mist. The series titles all reflect some aspect of these mountains-‘Smoke’, ‘Evergreen’, ‘Indigo’, etc. I love the Smokies and visit them and the grandchildren who live there often.

I love them, too. They are very different from my home base in San Antonio. It’s been fun exploring them with the grandchildren who live there.

OMG, that was a fun interview! Congrats Emily on your book but also on forty-five years with your soulmate. That is amazing, and it sounds like that rooftop date was most memorable. zP.S…..I love the dulcimer, even though I have no idea how to play one.

I’m looking forward to everything Nora Roberts writes, including her J.D. Robb stories. I love Jayne Ann Krentz, too. What I love best, though, is firing up my reader and finding new and unknown writers and giving them a try.
