Excerpt from Missing: The Lady Said No by Jacquie Biggar

โ€œRebecca Hayes, is that you?โ€ a shrill voice carried from the front of the store.

All eyes turned her way, leaving Becky pinned in place like a bug on a board. Her cheeks flared and she cursed her fair coloring as she searched the crowd for the blow horn caller.

A woman left the line, her swanky dress and perfectly coiffed head telling Rebecca who it was before she announced it for the benefit of the store.

โ€œItโ€™s me, dear, Marnie Maples. Remember, we went to school together?โ€ She swayed forward on three inch heels and a fitted black polka dot pencil dress. A matching bandanna, tied in a jaunty bow holding her blond curls away from her striking face, finished the ensemble.

Gusโ€™s ex-wife.

Of all the bad luck.

โ€œHello, Marnie,โ€ she said, giving in to the inevitable. โ€œItโ€™s been a while.โ€

The other woman eyed the baby in her arms and gave a sarcastic laugh. โ€œIโ€™ll say. A lot has changed. Whoโ€™s the lucky guy?โ€

Becky froze, her hand automatically covering Saraโ€™s head protectively. โ€œNo one you know.โ€ It was true. Marnie had never taken the time to appreciate the man sheโ€™d made her husband. Theyโ€™d married right out of school and it hadnโ€™t taken long for things to fall apart. When Becky first met Gus, heโ€™d been recovering from crushed pride more than a broken heart, but that didnโ€™t help with her jealousy. Marnie could be Marilyn Monroeโ€™s sister; it had intimidated the hell out of her.

โ€œI heard a rumor that youโ€™re living on Balmoral, the Jorgenson spread.โ€ She held up the county newspaper, the Chandlerville Chronicles. The headline read; Horse Entrepreneur Found Dead. โ€œIt sounds as though youโ€™ve had some excitement recently?โ€

The avid curiosity radiating as much from her periwinkle blue eyes as that of the other customers within listening range, made Becky inwardly cringe. Why did people always act like a pack of wolves when they sensed a weakness?

Sara seemed to pick up on her rising anxiety and moved fretfully, her chubby red cheeks warm against Beckyโ€™s neck. She patted the babyโ€™s back, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet while trying to pacify the hungry crowd.

โ€œThereโ€™s an ongoing investigation. Iโ€™m not at liberty to say anything about Mr. Jorgensonโ€™s death.โ€

โ€œSo there is an investigation.โ€ The gleam in Marnieโ€™s eyes turned predatory. โ€œAnd is my bumbling ex-husband involved?โ€ She ran a blood-red nail along the stem of a snowy white rose. The fresh, earthy scent of the flower shop seemed to turn corrosive and pungent.

Becky gazed desperately toward the cash register, and was relieved to see a space had opened. She angled away from the angry vixen, smiling at the harried looking clerk. โ€œSorry, Marnie, I have to go. Itโ€™s been really nice seeing you again.โ€ Liar, liar, pants on fire.

โ€œYes,โ€ Marnie chirped to her back. โ€œWeโ€™ll have to get together and chat about the old days, sometime. Iโ€™d love to find out what my husband saw in you.โ€

She didnโ€™t just say that.

Rebecca stopped dead in her tracks and swung around on one sneakered heel. โ€œIt was ex-husband, as you very well know, Marnie Maples. And we had lots in common. Like how much we detested overbearing, incredibly rude, females.โ€

The crowd had formed a circle around the two women who stood like combatants in a ring, but if they were hoping for a fight they were doomed to disappointment.

Marnie jutted one elegant hip and smirked, her lips in their matching red gloss puckering in a little moue of amusement. โ€œHmm, so the kitten spits. Well, thereโ€™s no need, darling. I gave him up first.โ€
