Must they always be continents apart?

Nobody expects Paris fashion designer Grace Railton to settle down in her Indiana town, least of all Mica Barzonni. Fifteen months ago, he turned to her for comfort and compassion following a farming accident that left him permanently injured. Then she returned to France and went silent on him.

Until, suddenly, Grace shows up on his doorstep with life-altering news. Mica, a father? He’s barely learned to navigate his postaccident life. But this could be his chance to become the man he’s always wanted to be—the husband and father Grace and their baby son need. Now Mica just has to convince her to stay.

CHRISTMAS IN INDIAN LAKE OR CHRISTMAS IN PARIS?

I’m amazed that a lot of our American traditions that we cling to so tightly and we think are original to us, are actually hybrids of traditions that have been around for centuries.

Take the Christmas Flower.  Poinsettia? Right? It’s a tropical plant. The story must be from a warm country, you’d think.

Well, it’s from France.

The Etoile de Noel is the Poinsettia. Euphorbia pulcherrima grown largely in Central America got its use in Christmas floral displays in Alsace.  (I keep wondering if one of my ancestors from Alsace Lorraine  was a florist since flower arranging, gardening and anything remotely related to flowers is an obsession with me).

The Poinsettia actually originated in Mexico and was known as The Flower of the Holy Night. It was first brought to America by Joel Poinsett in 1829 and named after him. It’s known in France as the “etoile de Noel”. Etoile means “star” and the star shaped petals of the flower symbolize the Star of Bethlehem to the French. The red color is for the blood Jesus sacrificed at his crucifixion.

These days the Poinsettia has been hybred to  all kinds of colors from white to pink, to my favorite the “candy cane” striped flower. And then there’s the “Jingle Bells” version.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t make it through Christmas without Poinsettias. I love them all. White ones, Pink ones, glittered ones and luscious red ones. I give them as gifts and mail them to friends. In the dead of winter, they are reminders that the spring WILL come. That life will be renewed and that there is always hope when one believes.
