Interview with Patricia Potter

 

 

I have a tendency to fall in love with all my heroes and heroines, but Jenny Talbot in my new SuperRomance, “The Soldier’s Homecoming,” shoots up to the top.

 

When I start a book, I spend weeks thinking about the hero and heroine before even considering a plot.  When they become real to me, they write the book themselves.   They do things I never considered.

 

Although I love strong heroines, the hero is usually the catalyst in my stories, especially in a series like Covenant Falls which is based on the return of veterans to civilian life in a small welcoming town in Colorado.  But Jenny would have none of that.   She truly marches to her own drummer and has since she was a child.   She chooses books over play, a college lecture in lieu of the senior prom, jeans and a denim jacket over fashion, life in a hostile and dangerous country over comfort.

 

She was easy to bring to life because she’s a reporter and I was once a reporter on a metropolitan paper and my uncle was a war correspondent.    I understand only too well how a good story can blind a reporter to everything else.   I know the intense curiosity that drives them.  Like Jenny, I want to know everything about people I meet, even if it’s just in passing.   I want to know what they are reading, about their family, what they like and why.   I can be embarrassingly nosy.   So I understand Jenny and what motivates her.   She loves learning for the sake of learning, and absolutely nothing is boring to her, including a hat cemetery.

 

She’s prepared for everything but marriage.   She regards it as a trap.  Her own parents’ marriage is bad, as is her sister’s.   After getting her journalism degree, she worked on a small paper until she had a small stake and headed overseas where she made a reputation writing about out- of- way places for travel magazines.   When she saved enough, she headed for war zones, her true destination.   She went from one dangerous place to another until she was wounded and forced back to the states.  Her goal: to return as soon as possible.  Someone needs to tell those stories.

 

Her curiosity and hunger for a good story isn’t deterred by an injured shoulder.  Until she can go back overseas, she’s looking for a story locally and thinks she finds it in an equine therapy program for veterans in Covenant Falls.    Problem is the providers do not want publicity.   They enlist their newest member, Major Travis Hammond, to get her out of their hair.   Burned by another woman journalist, he’s not happy about it, especially when they end up on a road trip to explore other equine therapy programs in the southwest.

 

Their adventures together are just starting and neither are prepared for falling in love.
