Excerpt

There was one he could answer right now. He reached up, pulled her hand away from his mouth and brushed a kiss across her palm. Her fingers curled in as if she wanted to capture his touch, hold it there forever. He kissed her wrist, watched her lips part, heard her soft inhale. He ran his hands over her neck, up into her hair, and tugged her forward. This time he held nothing back.

His mouth covered hers, and together they fell into the kiss. He lost himself to everything but the touch of Mia’s skin under his palms and the taste of her. The scent of the nighttime garden and the sound of the waterfall cocooned them in the moment. He wanted to settle in and never come back out.

Still, he slowed, pulled away to drop a last kiss on her lips, then her forehead before folding her into his embrace. He held her until his heart stopped racing and his breath evened out. Then he held on because he wanted to. Because she felt like she belonged right there, in his arms.

She yawned against his chest yet curled in closer against him.

He tipped her chin toward him, kissed her again. Only this time quietly and easily, as if they had all night, instead of minutes. He stopped before he was ready. Knew he’d never be ready. He cupped her cheek and said, “You need to go to bed. Get some rest.”

“What about you?” She leaned against him as they strolled back to the house.

“I’ll clean up the last bit from the dessert round and then sleep,” he said.

“I can help,” she offered.

“I’m not asking.” He guided her up the stairs into the house and motioned toward the bedrooms. “Good night, Mia.”

She turned around, held the palm he’d kissed up to her lips and smiled. “Sweet dreams, Doc.”

And then Wyatt knew. Knew that if he dared believe in the magic between them, his heart would never be the same. His life would never be the same.
