D. Wallace Peach started writing later in life after the kids were grown and a move left her with hours to fill. Years of working in business surrendered to a full-time indulgence in the imaginative world of books, and when she started writing, she was instantly hooked. Diana lives in a log cabin amongst the tall evergreens and emerald moss of Oregon’s rainforest with her husband, two dogs, bats, owls, and the occasional family of coyotes.

My Review

Alliances unravel and suspicion runs rampant in the second installment of this sweeping fantasy saga by D. Wallace Peach!

Allies and Spies picks up the story of three unlikely heroes bent on uncovering the truth behind a series of strange earth tremors and the sudden disappearance of people from all of the clans.

Alue, the female elf in their mismatched group, has been demoted from her position in the elfin army and now must prove herself to a father who seems to have turned his back on her. She is forced to seek the truth with the changeling spy who’d betrayed her trust and a half-breed goblin who resents his elfin side.

The changeling spy, Talin, is banished by his queen until he produces a blood debt of 100 goblin crystals for saving Alue and Raj from certain death by teaching them the secrets of his people. At the same time, he is made to swear upon an oath by the goblin elders to work with Alue and Naj to find out what s happening to their people when all he wants is to go back to his life as a swindler and spy.

Naj’ar is a proud warrior goblin, but even he is helpless against the strange occurrences happening with seeming random frequency between all the tribes. When his wife, Pree, is taken in one of the disturbances Naj is at first heartbroken, then determined to find out what happened to her.

Goblins blame elves, who blame changelings, who blame goblins in a vicious circle without proof. Can three unlikely companions find the truth and save their race from extinction?

The mystery grows in this, the second book in the Unraveling the Veil series. Peach does an amazing job with worldbuilding, scene setting, and character growth. It’s impossible not to get swept away by the beautiful writing style of this author.

  7. I never read books from the fantasy genre, but I made an exception for Diana because she is such a sweetheart and supportive blogger. I enjoyed Liars and Thieves a lot, and I may have to keep going. Maybe she’ll make a convert out of me yet.
