CHARACTER INTERVIEW – RENA JETT

Many thanks to you, Jacquie, for generously opening your blog space so I can talk about my new book, GHOSTLY INTERFERENCE!

Ellen DeGeneres is interviewing Rena Jett. Let’s join them.

 

Ellen: Hi, Rena. Thank you for taking the time to sit down with me today and talk a little about your life and how it’s changed.

Rena: A few months ago, I’d have refused to sit down and talk with anyone, but things have changed, and I’m ready to answer your questions. Fire away.

Ellen:  I know this might be a sensitive subject, but I want to talk first about your background. I know you were raised in foster care, and I’d like to hear your thoughts on that.

Rena: The foster care system is broken. While it started as a generous and kind venture, money has corrupted it just like every other government entity. I had a few kind foster parents, but I also had some that were worse than any nightmare you can imagine. My brother, Sam, and I got moved around a lot. Sometimes they’d keep us together and sometimes not. Once, Sam got sent to Juvie for beating up a kid who tried to rape me. I can’t even begin to tell you all the horrors I endured, from brutal rape to deprivation. My only defense was to build a hard shell around myself and get tough. All I wanted was a safe, loving home. That’s all any kid wants. But it never came for Sam or me.

Ellen:  I’m so sorry, Rena. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for a child to grow up like that. When you first met Jag, you rode a Harley. Do you still ride?

Rena: The Harley, Candy Kicker, was Sam’s. He taught me to ride it. When he joined the Army and was deployed overseas, he left it with me. Only he never came home except in a body bag. So the Harley was my connection to him and to everything we both stood for. I don’t ride anymore, and you’ll have to read the book to find out why. Riding the Harley gave me freedom. There is nothing like the wind blowing through you and the powerful machine beneath you. It was the closest thing to peace I could find. Sometimes if I rode fast enough, I could outrun my demons. Now, Jag and I have a little red convertible that I love.

Ellen:  Tell us how you felt when Jag first told you he could see your brother?

Rena: At first, I thought he was playing some kind of cruel game. But I couldn’t figure out his angle. He didn’t seem like the kind of guy who enjoyed hurting others. So, it took a while before I believed that he could actually see Sam. Once I accepted it, I found comfort in knowing that my brother was trying so hard to take care of me from beyond the grave. It changed a lot of my hardcore beliefs about the afterlife.

Ellen: What is the one biggest regret you have in life?

Rena: That’s a hard question. I have many. I guess the biggest is the way I hurt my brother as he was leaving to go overseas. I couldn’t stand the thought of him leaving and said the one thing that I thought might make him stay. It was a lie, and I lived with the guilt of that lie for a very long time.

Ellen: What’s the one thing you’d like for our readers to take away from yours and Jag’s story?

Rena: The one thing I hope everyone takes away from this story is the inspiration to open your hearts and follow your dreams no matter how absurd they might be.

Ellen:  Any final comments?

Rena: Only one. I just hope everyone will pick up a copy of “Ghostly Interference” and journey with Jag and me through some harrowing adventures, shocks, surprises, and acceptance on our way to finding the one thing we both need and want the most, love.

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Pat. I’d like to think the foster system has changed for the better over the years, but I know, for many, that’s not true. All we can do is continue to shed a light on the issues and hope it makes a difference.
