Between the threat of fire and excessive heat, my energy level is non-existent. Good thing my Kindle is stocked up with great books to take me away from all this stress!

The books on this list have been on my radar for a while. I’ve read fabulous reviews for them and just knew I had to give them a read- and I’m glad I did!

I’m sharing a brief description of each and then my reviews. Click the covers to learn more.

Thrills. Chills. Shadows and superstitions. Things that go bump in the night. Macabre Sanctuary boasts suspenseful fiction designed to elicit goosebumps and raise heartrates.

My Review

Creepy suspense best read with the lights ON!

This is a multi-author anthology by leaders in the mystery/suspense genre. Each short story begins with a creepy quote that sets the reader up for chilling reads from a variety of settings; an island with a haunted lighthouse, a cemetery haunted by a zombie, demons, ghosts, and so much more…

One of my favorite lines comes from Mae Clair’s story, The Lady Ghost:

Clogged with weeds and rubble, the trail vanished into darkness, cutting a crooked finger to a cliff-side cemetery.

Macabre Sanctuary (The Lady Ghost)- Mae Clair

There is a touch of the horror factor in a few of the stories, but not enough to totally freak me out (a good thing!). I enjoyed this diverse collection and would recommend it to anyone looking to amp up your heart rate for an afternoon!

Keeper Tyree is an aging bounty hunter who lives by his own set of rules. He’s a hard man, but just, and his word is his bond. He’s a loner and likes it that way. Then Cathleen O’Donnell catapults into his life looking to hire his gun.

My Review

Hold onto your hat! This is an action-packed western with a strong romance storyline- loved it!

Bounty hunter Keeper Tyree is taking some well deserved downtime when a grim-faced woman interrupts his dinner hoping he’ll lead her to the man who killed her son. Keeper reluctantly agrees on the condition she stays home and waits for his return with the body.

The woman looked brittle as dry timber. He fancied if he rested a hand on her arm it would break like kindling.

Keeper Tyree- S. Cox

Of course, the dang woman doesn’t listen to reason and the two are doomed to be trail-mates.

Goldang, what a stubborn female. He’d never bumped up against one who had so little give in her cinch.

Keeper Tyree- S. Cox

The adventure begins almost right away. Between gunslingers looking to add Tyree’s name as a notch in their belt, rescuing a plethora of characters from soiled doves to a nerdy lawyer and his son, and a teacher dragged behind a horse in the badlands, the race to find the evil Pardee is offset by an unexpected romance between the aging Keeper and Cathleen.

He held out his hand to shake on it. She hesitated then put her small one into his big paw. He clasped it and was stunned at how right it felt. Such a small thing really. He didn’t know why it rocked him down to his toes.

Keeper Tyree- S. Cox

This is a fun read with so many memorable characters I know it will stay with me for a while. The author blends humor and suspense with a deft hand and brings the reader along for the ride with immersive descriptions of both the settings and the gunfights, which were exciting!

Thoroughly enjoyed Keeper Tyree and will be looking for more of this author’s work in the future.

    1. I’ve had Macabre Sanctuary languishing on my Kindle for a long time. I’m glad I did a scroll and came across it!
Keeper Tyree is funny and sweet and nerve wracking at the same time. It reminds me of Two Mules for Sister Sara 🙂

  2. Great reviews, Jacquie:) I loved both of these books, and your right about Tyree Keeper staying with you! Reading does help with the constant fire worries, heat and the awful smoke, I agree. Praying for early for all of us! Sending rainy hugs xo
