Finding Your Voice #Writertips #amwriting

laptop-3087585_640 (1)

When I first began my writing career I took a LOT of online classes on craft, editing, revision, grammar, technique, and the one thing that kept coming up was the need to discover your voice. The unique something that distinguishes your work and keeps your readers coming back for more.

But how?

What do the experts mean by voice anyway?

Do you have a favorite author? One whose pages you could read without seeing the cover and you’d STILL be able to say without a doubt, yes, that is definitely their book?

I thought so 🙂

That’s voice!

It’s a distinctive style that sets the writer’s work apart from anyone else. Some use setting, such as bestselling and award-winning author Louise Penny. Her books are set in and around the scenic mountain town of Three Pines, Quebec. If a fan were to read a brief passage from any of her books they would know who wrote the novel.

Other writers have a certain way with characterization that’s a dead giveaway, such as Jill Shalvis. Her writing style is part sass, part angst, and a whole lot of heat!

One of the best styles of voice comes with deep POV (point of view).

Military romantic suspense author Suzanne Brockmann does this better than most. Deep point of view is when the character acts, thinks, or talks and there is no need to add a name tag because we know this character. He/she is as real as if we were watching them on our favorite television series. Suzanne does this by creating distinct mannerisms that we immediately associate with that person. She does this so well, she can write entire passages without a name/ and frequently does, and yet it’s easy to know who is talking at any given moment.

Voice is something a writer gains with time. It can’t be forced, but for readers it’s that magic thing that will make them your fans. If you have a backlist take another look, you might be pleasantly surprised 🙂

I’m currently working on a summer romance set on an island in the Pacific Northwest. A theme that runs through my stories is the value of family, and this one is no different.

Here’s the blurb for Sweetheart Cove:

Josie Sparks is looking for escape after a disastrous relationship. A summer job on a small Pacific Northwest island seems perfect. That is, until she meets her irascible new boss. She thinks she can help his sweet little girl–he’s another story.

Jacob Samuels needs someone reliable to care for his special needs daughter, but is sorry he trusted his sister with the task when help arrives in the shape of a too-young, too-tempting therapist with pain-filled eyes he can’t ignore.

Sand, surf, and soft island breezes bring two lonely hearts together in this heartwarming tale of second chance romance and a love that lasts forever.

Josie wasn’t sure how she got through the next few days. She must have acted reasonably normal because no one questioned her absentmindedness, even when she set the puppy’s food in the refrigerator instead of the pantry where it belonged. Jacob’s kiss lived front and center in her thoughts, and his hard, masculine body encompassed her dreams. A moody, short-tempered grump who made her pulse skyrocket.

How could she feel this way about him when she’d been hours from marrying another man a month ago? She added fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies to the picnic basket she’d prepared and glanced down at the pup sitting quietly at her feet. “If you’re looking for handouts, you’ll just have to wait. No offence, but I don’t trust your stomach in the car.”

“Is it time yet?” Jane wheeled into the kitchen, her face expectant. The dog, thinking it was playtime, crouched, nose on his front paws, butt in the air and tail wagging a mile a minute. He let out a couple of excited yips, then raced around the room and jumped against Jane’s short-clad legs. “Ow, Mischief, that hurts,” she cried, then stopped in shock and stared at the red marks already fading from her skin. “It hurt,” she whispered.

Josie pushed the dog out of the way and crouched at the little girl’s side. “Honey, this is great. I’m so happy for you. We better tell your father, so he can get you into the specialist for a checkup.”

Jane shook her head and gripped Josie’s wrist. “No. Can we keep it a secret? Please, Josie? Just for a while. I want to get better and surprise Daddy by walking. Please?”

Her pleading eyes undid Josie. How was she supposed to say no to that? She nodded. “Okay, but if you have any pains at all, you tell me, understand?” She patted Mischief’s silky head. “Guess your dad knew what he was doing, getting you a dog. Maybe we should name him Miracle instead of Mischief.”

Jane giggled. “It’s not Mischief, Josie. It’s you. You’re the miracle.”

I’d like to think I’m gaining a voice, but you the reader are the only ones who can tell me whether I’m right. What do you think? 🙂

He appreciated every inch of her, including that big brain that she didn’t hesitate to use to best him whenever possible. That was some pretty sexy shit right there.

“Are you not a meat eater? Because that’s something I should know up front.” The kind of thing Wren should put in her file. Damon didn’t think that was too much to ask.

As predicted she frowned at him. Shot him one of those you’re-wasting-time looks that she’d been using on him nonstop since they met. “Are you serious right now?”

“Because I eat a lot of burgers and if that’s going to offend you, I can eat something else. I won’t like it, but I will.” Her fidgeting must be rubbing off on him because he picked up his fork then set it down again.

She leaned across the table. “How many burgers?”

Now this was a topic he could handle. Especially since she asked the question in a soft voice, as if they were sharing a secret. “Every day.”

She sat back hard in her seat again. “You do not eat a hamburger every day.”

He ignored the horror in her voice. “True. Some days I mix it up and order a cheeseburger. If I’m feeling particularly frisky I’ll have a steak sandwich.”

“That seems like an invitation to heart disease.” And she was back to shifting around. She crossed and uncrossed her arms before she grabbed for her napkin again.

He could not stop watching her. Energy buzzed off her. He found the mix of tough talk and nervous fidgeting unexpectedly hot. “You’d think, but no.”

“I’m going to pretend you’re kidding.”

“I’m not.”

She cleared her throat. “Shauna.”

They could circle back to food because she had his attention now. He refused to joke about this topic. “Your sister.”

“She’s three years older.”

He noticed she didn’t use the past tense. Shauna died ten years ago and Cate still saw her as an “is.” For Damon, that meant treading carefully. “And you are . . . ?”

“Twenty-nine.”

He knew that answer before she said but thought keeping her to facts might help her emotionally wade through the next part. He’d helped Wren with other cases and this piece—dealing with the grief—never got easier. Damon had a load of grief and guilt of his own piled on top of hers, so he got it.

He nodded to her. “Go ahead.”

“The questions you ask don’t seem that pertinent.”

“I’m going to be honest with you.” He started to lean forward when the waiter came by and dropped off their food. The smell of grilled hamburger filled his senses as he reached for his folded napkin and threw it across his lap.

She didn’t move. “That would be a good way to start.”

“Wren already gave me a file he had on you. The man is an expert at collecting information and then making Garrett put it together in a nice big, easy-to-understand breakdown of what happened and when.”

For a few seconds she sat there, quiet, as her gaze moved over his face, studying him. “Then why are we here doing the get-to-know-you thing?”

He popped a french fry in his mouth. “I’m hungry. That happens a lot. The need-to-eat thing. So, you’ll need to get used to it.”

Maggie’s Run by Kelly Hunter #BookReview #Romance @TulePublishing @KellyHunterova

51do9FwxC7L

Maggie Walker has never called Wirra Station home. Orphaned as a child, she spent more time at boarding school, and then working in the city, than she ever spent on the edge of the outback. But when her great aunt dies, Maggie inherits everything and reluctantly returns to tidy the place up before selling.

Ambitious cowboy-next-door Max O’Connor has the means and the desire to buy Wirra Station outright and return it to its former glory. But first, he wants elusive Maggie Walker to know what she’s giving up. He challenges her to live at Wirra Station for three months—with him as farm manager. Just one season–and if she still doesn’t love the place, he’ll gladly pay up and she can be cashed-up and careless, with no ties to anything or anyone.

Three months. Two hearts. One Summer. Roll on.

About the Author

Kelly-Hunter-e1446973361879

Kelly’s career in science took her from outback Australia to the jungles of South East Asia before she turned to writing romance.

My Review

Written in the style of one of my favorite Australian romance authors, Margaret Way, Kelly Hunter takes us on a trip to the outback and the inheritance of the historical Wirra Station.

Maggie Walker never planned on returning to her childhood home and the ghosts she’d left behind, but the death of her great-aunt forces her to confront the past.

Including the boy who’d saved her life the night her parents died.

Max O’Connor has never forgotten the shy, introvert who’d grown up next door. Now that Maggie has come back he falls for the woman she’s become. But can he convince her to let the past go and give their future a try?

This book is filled with an emotional tug-o war between the main characters, Max and Maggie, and a horrifying accident they can’t forget.

Favorite line:

And then their eyes locked, and her heart tried to fly to him while the rest of her stayed perfectly still.

Hunter, Kelly. Maggie’s Run (Outback Brides Book 1) (Kindle Locations 1918-1919). Tule Publishing. Kindle Edition.

I give Maggie’s Run 4.5 lovely kisses- An emotional journey!

Excerpt

Charlotte stared at her computer screen, unsure if she should be thankful or irritated at her new muse. She usually wrote about five thousand words a day, many days even more than that. But over the last few weeks she’d written only twelve thousand words, four thousand of which she’d written after meeting über-serious and insanely handsome Beau. She’d never had to rely on anyone else to fill her creative well before, and the fact that he’d uncorked whatever had stopped up her pipes was bothering her.

She leaned back, propped her toes on the edge of her desk, and twisted her chair from side to side, trying to analyze the situation. After returning Chris Pine to her toy room, she’d shown Beau around the property. He’d remained just as serious and had taken pages of notes. She couldn’t imagine what he’d seen that needed fixing. There hadn’t been anything sexual about their interactions, although she had to admit she’d stolen a shameful number of glances at his gorgeous body. For research purposes, of course. And she’d come away with four thousand words worth of inspiration.

She gazed outside at the setting sun, and Beau came into view. He was carrying a ladder up from the workshop. Shirtless.

“Good Lord.”

Her feet smacked the hardwood as she scrambled over to the window. Her eyes swept over the hard set of his chin, those ever-serious eyes focused on the path before him, and heaven have mercy, gorgeous planes of olive skin stretched tight over his muscular torso. She breathed faster with each of his determined steps. As he neared the corner of the building, she pressed her cheek to the glass, eking out the very last second of her view before he disappeared around the corner.

Turning her back to the window, she pressed her hand over her racing heart and closed her eyes. It had been years since a man had affected her this way. Although she didn’t get many visitors, she opened the inn for a few weddings and charity events. During those times, the grounds were crawling with athletes, actors, and other wealthy, sharply dressed men. None of them had stolen her concentration for more than a passing glimpse of appreciation, but images of Beau taunted her—his pulsing jaw muscles, the weighty intensity of his eyes, and that curt nod that should turn her off but piqued her interest even more.

Was it him that had her so flustered, or was it that he’d provided the missing inspiration for her writing? Writing was not only her career, but it was her emotional lifeline. It had pulled her through the most devastating times of her life.

Surely her heart was racing because of the return of her muse. Of course that was it. She’d been so upset about having writer’s block, her body was just celebrating the reprieve from it. That made perfect sense, except now she couldn’t stop thinking about him and how virile he looked carrying that stupid ladder.

She needed to capitalize on it.

She slipped into writer mode, sat at her keyboard, and went to work creating a scene to go with the ladder—and that man. As she hammered it out, she feared her muse would disappear again, and her pulse skyrocketed.

Yup. Definitely the muse and not the man.

She couldn’t afford to lose this inspiration. She needed to keep feeding her muse so she could make up for lost time and write this book. The idea behind the four thousand words she’d written had hit her like a sensual slap in the butt when she’d made that comment about the handcuffs and his bed. Her fingers stilled over the keyboard as an idea formed. A little harmless flirtation might lead to an incredible story.

She grabbed a pen and paper and scribbled titles as they popped into her mind. Nail Me. Hammer Time. Climb Me, Baby.

Okay, maybe her muse was still a little off, but she was coming back! Now that she had a plan to keep her muse alive, she focused on creating the story of the sexy contractor and his enormous tools.

I thoroughly enjoyed the escalating tension between these two and the wily Mother Superior!

Destiny of a Gargoyle

He was born in a time when magic ruled the Earth.

Gargoyles protected fairies from goblins. His family was a group of elite gargoyles who were assigned to protect a specific fairy. His father’s dereliction of that duty cursed his sons to become stone and wait.

Now reawakened in the twenty first century where no one believes in magic how is he going to convince his fairy that she is one and that she is in danger from a goblin?

He must do that without falling in love with her.

This book is out now!

Excerpt:

“She’s it,” Donal said.

He could communicate with his brothers telepathically. Otherwise his time in stone might have driven him nuts.

“You’re sure?” Sean said.

“I’m sure. She’s it. I can feel my heart softening. She must be the one that I am supposed to protect,” Donal said.

“Wow. After all of these years. And of course Donal finds his first. Lucky guy,” Declan said.

“He is always the lucky one,” Sean said.

“If I were that lucky I wouldn’t have been stuck in stone here with you two lugs,” Donal said.

He would have lived and died in his own time. Instead of watching what had happened to the fairies he’d been born to protect. They’d died off and somewhere along the line the fairies had forgotten who they were. He’d bet that Meg had no idea who she was.

That made his job even harder. She wouldn’t have any idea why he was protecting her. The fairies had gone into hiding when the humans took over the world. They renamed his part of the island County Galway. What did that even mean?

He was Donal of Connaught. Not Donal of Galway. If he could sigh he would. He sighed in his head.

His brothers were stilling whinging about him being lucky. “I’m the oldest. You didn’t have to tell the Queen what our father had done. She could have made me stone and you would never have known what had happened to me.”

“Still, why do you get to go first?” Sean said.

“Because she is my fairy. Not yours,” Donal said.

He wasn’t going to apologize for finding his fairy first. He never would have thought they were going to find any of theirs. The fairies were all elsewhere and finding one from his own kingdom let alone another one had always been a long shot.

“What will you do?” Declan said.

“The Fairy Queen told me the rules before she left. I have to be in the fairy’s presence for a whole day before I lose the curse,” Donal said.

“A whole day. The sun must be in the same place for the beginning and the end?” Declan said.

“Yes.”

“How are you going to do that?” Sean said.

“I don’t know. She doesn’t spend that much time here, but I’m sure I have a few days to figure it out. I already feel as if I could fall off of this wall. Maybe I can go with her.”

“Without legs? Or only stone ones.”

“I don’t know everything, you mugs. I’m guessing some things here,” Donal said. “If you two be quiet and let me think maybe I’ll figure it out. You’ll have your chance and I get to sort out what needs to be done. That way neither of you mess it up.”

They say life can change in an instant… Lost and Found Sisters by @JillShalvis #BookReview #Reading #WomensFic

51zKj38qMJL._SY346_

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes her first women’s fiction novel—an unforgettable story of friendship, love, family, and sisterhood—perfect for fans of Colleen Hoover, Susan Mallery, and Kristan Higgins.

They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

My Review

What would you do if you suddenly found out the family you know and love isn’t yours?

This is the news unsuspecting sous chef Quinn Weller receives on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, and it throws her already screwed up life into a tailspin.

In search of answers, she travels to her dead mother’s hometown, only to learn she’s inherited a cafe, a broken down house… and a teenage sister. Tempting as it is to run the other way, Quinn stays and learns love can sneak up on you even when you guard your heart.

This book has so many great quotes it’s hard to pick a favorite. Here’s just a couple that resonated with me:

I walk around like everything is fine but deep down inside my shoe my sock is sliding off.

I’ve learned that you can’t make everyone happy, you’re not a bowl of ice cream.

Shalvis, Jill. Lost and Found Sisters (p. 228). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.

I loved the interactions between Quinn and her young sister, Tilly and the way their relationship changed throughout the story. And then there’s Beth, Quinn’s dead sister’s ghost who has sage advice and likes to pop up unexpectedly just when Quinn needs her.

There’s a flea-bitten cat, a pushover of a dog, a flock of killer chickens (or so Quinn believes!) and the handsome, supportive, sexy Mick who forces Quinn to look at parts of herself she’d closed up after her sister’s death.

This book will touch you, comfort you, and best of all, make you laugh!

I give Lost and Found Sisters 5+ lovely kisses- A must read!

A Lot Like Home by @KatCantrell #NewRelease #Romance @InkSlingerPR

Today we have the blog tour for A LOT LIKE HOME by Kat Cantrell! Check it out and get your copy now!

Synopsis

From USA Today best seller Kat Cantrell, comes a small-town romance series with a touch of magic.

Welcome to Superstition Springs, town in progress.

After being kicked out of the Navy, ex-SEAL Caleb Hardy needs a new mission, and rebuilding an old Texas mining town into a tourist attraction is it. If he does it right, Superstition Springs will become a new home for his band of world-weary teammates… and maybe a place to atone for the horrific mistake they’d made in the line of duty.

Havana Nixon has other plans for the quirky dot on the map she never could quite call home. The town is falling apart. Struggling. Solution: convince the folks to sell out. Except she didn’t count on the infuriating (and gorgeous, not that she’d ever tell him that) obstacle who plunks down in the middle of her land deal and acts like the careful barriers she’s erected against the world don’t exist. Thank goodness she’s arrived armed with a fiancé in tow, never mind that it’s all a sham designed to keep one of her aunt’s famous love predictions from coming true.

But in a mystical place like Superstition Springs, nothing ever goes as expected, least of all a head-to-head between two people with opposing plans, who spark every time they get in each other’s way. If they could just unbend long enough to compromise, they might figure out they both want the same thing–forever.

When Havana knocked on his door the next morning, he could easily call himself shocked. Since he was pretty sure she wasn’t there for the same activity he’d been visualizing, he threw some pants on and eased the door open, partially shielding himself behind it.

Just in case she was there for something a little more hands-on, he’d already be almost undressed for the occasion.

She didn’t say a word. Her gaze strayed down his torso as if she’d stumbled over the best side of beef at the market and she was starving.

“It’s a little early in the morning to be looking at a man like that,” he said drily. “Unless you’re planning to come in and make good on it.”

She cut her gaze back to his and locked on, a guilty flush staining her cheeks. Which pleased him enormously because it meant she had indeed been indulging in some naughty thoughts despite the back-off mandate she’d issued the last time they’d talked.

“I wasn’t expecting you to be half-dressed,” she mumbled. “Or have such a fascinating array of nicks and scars on that one shoulder. Your skin is this interesting bronze color that I hadn’t properly imagined and… I’m going to shut up now.”

Oh, that would be a shame. He tried to hide a grin and failed. “Don’t do that on my account. I like listening to you talk about my body. There’s more you haven’t seen if you need some additional parts to describe.”

The flush heightened. “I’d really prefer it if you’d put a shirt on.”

“You came to my door at—” He leaned back to glance at the clock, but really it was an excuse to reveal more of his naked chest because flustering her was so much fun. “Eight-oh-five a.m. How dressed did you think I was going to be?”

“Most people put clothes on to answer the door,” she countered and averted her eyes but not before she copped a peek. Hopefully that eyeful had given her enough to consider whether she’d like to take this early-morning meeting to the next level.

“Most people haven’t spent the past decade face down in dirt for the better part of a night. Now that I don’t have to, I like to be as comfortable as possible. I’ve never been modest, nor am I about to start.”

She nodded once. “I’ll take that under advisement.”

“Are you sure you didn’t come by hoping to catch me still in bed?” he asked tongue in cheek. “Or did you actually intend to have a conversation about something other than my poor battle-worn skin?”

Her gaze strayed back to his shoulder, softening. “I guess I should have put that together. It didn’t occur to me that you’d have wounds from being in the Navy.”

“I was a SEAL. We did the stuff no one wants to talk about,” he told her flatly. “I tangled with the wrong end of an al-Qaeda butcher knife. More than once.”

Her head bobbed in agreement a bunch of times as if she couldn’t quite process that. “Sure, of course. I get that it wasn’t pretty.”

“And neither am I. But I fared much better than the other guy.” Fact of life. Some women didn’t like that part of his past, and if she was one of them, now would be a good time to establish that.

But she lifted her eyes to his, and revulsion wasn’t even close to the top of the list of things he saw there. “You’re beautiful, Caleb. You earned those scars in the most honorable way imaginable. Why would anyone see them as ugly?”

Now it was his turn to flush, but why that pleased him so much, he couldn’t say. “Now you’re embarrassing me.”

“Then put a shirt on,” she advised him saucily. “If you don’t want to be ogled, don’t run around naked.”

Thea and I had agreed on just one night. One incredible night. The next morning, we’d walked away from each other with no strings attached. She’d gone back to her life. I’d gone back to my hectic work and social schedule, just glad that I’d had the chance to meet her.

What I hadn’t expected was for Thea to pop into my thoughts so often after that night. I’d think of her smile whenever I was at a hotel bar. I’d think of her laugh when I was at a boring fundraiser. I’d think of her whenever I saw a woman with long, sleek dark hair.

After months of her on my mind, I’d finally given in. I’d gone back to the bar to see her one more time.

Except she’d been gone.

With my child.

I’d waited too long.

When Time Stands Still
Sara Furlong Burr
Publication date: June 15th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It’s been nearly a decade since Elle Sloan last saw Luke Hutchins. Close to ten years since she broke up with him over a single phone call, providing him with little explanation. Since the end of their relationship, Elle has done everything she could do to move on, marrying, proceeding forward with her life, almost allowing herself to completely forget about Luke.

Almost.

Out of nowhere, Elle receives a phone call from Luke’s mother. Luke has been in a horrific car accident and, a month later, has just awoken from a coma. However, instead of celebrating, his family is stunned to learn that Luke is suffering from amnesia and only remembers his life as it was before his breakup with Elle. Not wanting to tell Luke that he and Elle aren’t together anymore for fear it may compromise his recovery, Elle is asked by Luke’s family to come to the hospital to see him. Their hope is that she will slowly be able to jog his memory and cushion the blow.

Guilt-ridden over how their relationship ended, Elle readily agrees, finding herself transported back in time with Luke to the life they once shared and the future they could have had together.

EXCERPT:

I heard voices even before I stepped inside of the room. They were soft, but one by one, I was able to discern who was speaking. The first voice struck me like a freight train, catapulting me further back in time with each word he spoke. The second one made my heart skip a beat.

As I walked farther into the room, I saw another vision of my past sitting next to the hospital bed. His attention, at first, was entirely focused on the occupant in the bed, until movement from me diverted his attention to me. He locked eyes with me, surprise on his face quickly turning to an odd combination of contradiction. Anger, excitement, and suspicion all appeared to be waging war and were enough to give me whiplash just looking at him. Peter Monroe—or just Monroe, as he preferred to be called—had been Luke’s best friend since pretty much the dawn of each other’s existence. He’d aged. His boyish good looks had hardened into a man who would have been difficult to recognize to me, save for the same square chin, overly large nose, and mischievous eyes I had remembered so fondly.

Another step inside the room revealed a sight I had fought valiantly to keep from infiltrating my dreams for the last several years. Like Monroe, he didn’t notice my arrival at first, and I was grateful for that because the shock I was feeling at that moment would have undoubtedly transferred onto him. His head was turned, his eyes, from what I could see of them, were closed. Most of his features were facing Monroe, but from what little I could make out of them, he looked exactly how I remembered him. The rest of his body, however, was a different story.

His hair had begun to grow back after having obviously been recently shaved to prep him for surgery. On the side of his head that was visible to me, a bandage was secured to his scalp just above his ear and was wrapped around his head. Both of his legs had been broken and were secured with immobilizers, resembling large boots. He’d been through hell and back physically, and I feared he’d soon go through the same emotionally, all because of me.

Tears fell down my face before I even had the chance to realize they had formed. Not wanting Luke to see me upset, I dabbed my eyes with my sleeve and did my best to maintain my composure before he realized I was there. With a lump in my throat, I took a step closer to the bed, approaching it on the opposite side of Monroe. There another chair sat, which I was grateful for in the event my legs felt like they were going to give out on me. Monroe sat watching me expectantly, silently screaming at me to announce my presence and put an end to the torment Luke must have been going through since regaining consciousness.

Closing my eyes, I took a breath and spoke. “Luke.”

The room had one queen-sized bed. If he was lying next to her on it, no way was she leaving that guy alone. Not even after violent trauma and the wound still throbbing painfully in her thigh. Crazy, but so what. She was alive and kicking and in one piece, thanks to him.

She wanted to feel something good and true and excellent. Luke fit the bill.

Bye-bye, cartoon kittens. They could wait for a Netflix and popcorn and sex-with-socks-on night. She was going with the hot red stretch lace. Just as she was. Unretouched.

And in the mood for some intense sexual healing.

Dani wriggled into the outfit. Hoisted her boobs up for maximum lift. Hiked the panties up extra high. She pushed the door open, stepped out and struck a pose.

For nothing. Luke was in a digital trance. One hand manipulated a tablet, the other was tapping madly over the laptop’s keyboard. He’d looped his devices into a chain and his brain was the connector. No attention to spare for sexy lingerie.

But she wasn’t giving up. By no means. “How’s it going?”

“So far so good,” he said. “I’ve pinpointed the location of the second shipment, and the combination for retrieving it. All the backup equipment needed to activate the slave soldier and make it function. Coordinates for the pickup of the wetware are included.”

She tugged at the lacy shoulder strap, adjusting it. Luke still hadn’t noticed what she was wearing. “What the hell is wetware?”

“It’s a Manticore term. It refers to the slave soldier. He could be dormant, possibly suspended in fluid. There’s a file on him. I89VY262. I haven’t gone through that one yet. C drive on the laptop, if you’re interested.”

“I am interested,” she said. “But later.”

“The equipment is in a self-storage unit at an E-Z-U-Store in Serrati Flats, California,” he said. “About a hundred and fifty miles north of here.”

“I suppose you want to get going right away?”

“No, we’ll wait.”

She was startled. “Why? Aren’t we in a hurry?”

“You went through hell today. You need a decent night’s sleep. In a real bed.”

Well, bless his heart. How sweet. The bed part he’d gotten right.

She walked toward him slowly. Swaying her hips. Still nothing. He was locked and loaded in data processing mode. His eyes reflected squares of blue from the screen. A stream of files rolled constantly down it. Like she was peering directly into the data churn in his brain.

He was about to get forcibly reminded that he was not a robot.

She stepped between him and the desk and sat down on his lap.

Luke went rigid. “Holy fuck, Dani.”

She leaned in so her tits were right below the level of his nose. Nipples on red alert from being so close to him. She put her arms around his neck, running her fingers slowly through his hair. Inhaling his hot male scent. “I like the red outfit the best,” she said, her voice low and husky. “Do you?”’

About Shannon McKenna:

Shannon McKenna is the NYT bestselling author of seventeen action packed, turbocharged romantic thrillers, among which are the stories of the wildly popular McCloud series and the brand new romantic suspense series, The Obsidian Files. She loves tough and heroic alpha males, heroines with the brains and guts to match them, villains who challenge them to their utmost, adventure, scorching sensuality, and most of all, the redemptive power of true love. Since she was small she has loved abandoning herself to the magic of a good book, and her fond childhood fantasy was that writing would be just like that, but with the added benefit of being able to take credit for the story at the end. Alas, the alchemy of writing turned out to be messier than she’d ever dreamed. But what the hell, she loves it anyway, and hopes that readers enjoy the results of her alchemical experiments. She loves to hear from her readers.

My Review

Told in first person, this story has so many twists and turns it will leave you breathless!

Joe Lynch is a school teacher, husband and father. His life is pretty near perfect- until it isn’t.

A single event changes Joe’s safe, secure world forever and nothing will ever be the same again.

Faced with a murder charge on a crime he didn’t commit, the possible adulterous activities of his wife-the woman he thought he knew so well-Joe is forced into the car and mouse game of his life.

There’s a surprise twist at the end I guarantee you won’t see coming, and so much suspense it’s almost impossible to set the book down.

I give Lies 5+ lovely kisses- a must read!

The closer she gets to unearthing the truth, the closer she comes to a hidden world of twisted secrets, insanity, and evil that refuses to die . . . Cusp of Night by @MaeClair1 #NewRelease #Suspense

I’m super excited to have Mae Clair on the blog today celebrating the release of her new novel, Cusp of Night!

Thanks for hosting me on your blog today, Jacquie! I’ve been making the rounds with my newest release, Cusp of Night, a mystery / suspense novel with paranormal elements. Cusp of Night features two timelines—one set at the end of the 19th Century, with another in present day.

My main character in the past is a Spiritualist who becomes the toast of Philadelphia society. Her séances are well attended and she’s lauded in the newspapers as being genuine. “Sitters” who attend her sessions are treated to ghostly music, rapping sounds, table tilting, “spirit hands,” ectoplasm, and more. These were all typical elements of mediumistic practices at the time. While researching these and more, I found “automatic writings” to be particularly interesting.

Hand writing a letter with a goose feather

A medium performs automatic writing—without conscious thought—when under the control of a spirit or guide. Rather than speaking, the medium would convey messages from a sitter’s departed loved one by writing longhand. This could be a few short sentences or pages upon pages of discourse. During the period of writing, the medium is usually unaware of what is happening, his or her hand flying rapidly across the page as the spirit takes control. Occasionally, the words produced might be in another language, or crammed so minute in scale, a magnifying glass would be needed to read them.

In Cusp of Night, Lucinda Glass, performs automatic writings for one of her regular customers—the same way Arthur Conan Doyle’s wife, Lady Jean, would perform an automatic writing for Harry Houdini (said to be from his mother) twenty-odd years later. And like the magicians and showmen of Houdini’s day, mediums of the nineteenth century were not above a bit of flim-flam. Just how much, comes to light in my novel when Lucinda’s world blends with that of Maya Sinclair.

Here’s the blurb:

Recently settled in Hode’s Hill, Pennsylvania, Maya Sinclair is enthralled by the town’s folklore, especially the legend about a centuries-old monster. A devil-like creature with uncanny abilities responsible for several horrific murders, the Fiend has evolved into the stuff of urban myth. But the past lives again when Maya witnesses an assault during the annual “Fiend Fest.” The victim is developer Leland Hode, patriarch of the town’s most powerful family, and he was attacked by someone dressed like the Fiend.

Compelled to discover who is behind the attack and why, Maya uncovers a shortlist of enemies of the Hode clan. The mystery deepens when she finds the journal of a late nineteenth-century spiritualist who once lived in Maya’s house–a woman whose ghost may still linger.

Known as the Blue Lady of Hode’s Hill due to a genetic condition, Lucinda Glass vanished without a trace and was believed to be one of the Fiend’s tragic victims. The disappearance of a young couple, combined with more sightings of the monster, trigger Maya to join forces with Leland’s son Collin. But the closer she gets to unearthing the truth, the closer she comes to a hidden world of twisted secrets, insanity, and evil that refuses to die . . .
