The moment their lips meshed, Adam knew he’d made a mistake. He thought he could control the allure of a short-term affair with Amanda to help him get over Maggie, but it wasn’t going to be that easy. The moist warmth of her mouth sent his heart catapulting in his chest. His blood sizzled with the urge to take her down to the thick green grass and bury himself in her core, but he forced himself to take it slow, to savor the soft skin of her cheek beneath his fingers, the swell of a full breast against the palm of his hand. The erotic sound of her voice sighing his name.

“Adam…” She opened eyes filled with desire, deep green pools he could happily drown in. “We can’t do this.”

“Why not?” he murmured, nibbling on her jaw. “We’re free agents. Why can’t we have a little fun?”

Her eyes narrowed and the soft, pliant body turned into a post. “That’s what this is to you, fun?” She stepped back, allowing in a draft of cold air to cool his ardor—or maybe that was her frosty expression.

He raised his hands out at his sides and shook his head. “Of course not. You’re taking my words out of context. Kissing you is fun, Amanda. And sexy, and irresistible, and addictive—should I go on?”

“Please, do. I haven’t seen a charmer in action before, it’s… enlightening.” She sighed and straightened her blouse, mussed from his touch. “Can we get back to business now?”

It was his turn to sigh. “Running away won’t solve our issues, but sure, boss, I can wait.”

Her eyes telegraphed her relief and he suddenly realized the indomitable SAC Rhinehold was shy. She faced the day-to-day challenge of their job with such confidence and passion, it surprised him to think of her as uncertain in any aspect of her life. But, then again, he didn’t remember her ever having a relationship in the time they’d worked together.

“Amanda…”
