Pricing Indie Books (& shameless promotion)

D. Wallace Peach is having a whale of a sale!

Mark Twain looking over a few of my books.

Pricing books is tough, especially for those of us who rely on our own efforts to market.

When I started writing, my overarching aim was to build a readership. I wanted to share my stories with the world, and as a result, every other goal took second place. Unfortunately, my dreams were quickly dashed. I had a publisher who controlled my prices and wasn’t willing to negotiate. The prices were high (in my opinion), and the publisher didn’t support giveaways or discounts. My sales were horrible. My entire royalty for my first year was $8.00. No one was reading my books.

After six titles, I canceled my contracts and indie-published all my books. Immediately, I lowered prices and ran routine giveaways. As I suspected, my readership grew, and though I was lightyears away from making a living as an author, my…

#BookReview: SKATING ON THIN ICE by Jacquie Biggar

One of my favorite reviews ever, and it’s for my book! Thank you, Staci Troilo!

Staci Troilo's avatarStaci Troilo

Ciao, amici! I don’t know about you, but my to-be-read list is out of control. I’m a pretty fast reader, yet I’m adding books faster than I can devour them. And that’s on top of books that have already been waiting for a while. I try to read them in the order I downloaded them, but sometimes a favorite author or a sequel to a beloved series bumps up in the ranks.

That’s what happened this week.

I’m sorry to the authors who have been languishing in my TBR pile, but one of my downloads couldn’t wait. I’m a huge hockey fan. I start watching in the preseason, only missing games that conflict with the Steelers. And once football is over, the Penguins are all I have to cheer for until football rolls around again. (My Pirates have just been struggling too much to get excited about baseball.)

When a…

Spiders Web

What is this thing we call dreaming?

Is it an alternate reality we live during the dark hours?

Are others living out their moment before being born

Using our blank minds to imprint their time upon?

Should we take note of those dream moments?

Alas, we do not. We let them fall by the wayside

A possible message lost.

Not all dreams relate to the day before.

As has been said, there are strange moments

mixed in that you seem to recognise, but cannot place.

Faces, voices that you feel you have met before

Familiar attributes you feel comfortable with

Is each life no more than a giant spiders web?

Each silken thread pulled by a puppet master

That loves the dark dreams best

the ones we call nightmares…

I actually recorded this if you want to listen along.

The Elephant Child

by D. Wallace Peach

An elephant child, carefree and wild
Walked into the wintry woods
He followed fox tails and jackrabbit trails
Ignoring his mother’s “shoulds”

Of course, he got lost and chilled by the frost
As night began to fall
To his rump he sunk and tooted his trunk
But no one answered his call

Oh, that cold night, to the elephant fright
The clouds began to snow
He sniffled and shivered, shook and quivered
His nose he needed to blow

The blizzard swirled and snowflakes twirled
He plodded on wobbly knees
His head grew stuffy, the snow so fluffy
He blew out a honking sneeze

Losing hope, he started to mope
When in an evergreen tree
He spied a house, just right for a mouse
And he let go a…
