TTAC_eBook_1600

While I was off pitching in the big leagues, my family was back in the small town of Sweetwater, Texas, running the family ranch. Then tragedy hit and I discovered there were secrets that my family kept, problems they hid. I went home, left behind the money, women, and fame. I took over the ranch and took care of my grandmother. I took over hiding the secrets. Then she came to town. A smart-mouthed, clumsy, too-smart-and-too-pretty-for-my-own-good city girl hiding out to write a book. She’s right here, on my property, in the cottage my grandmother rented her without my permission, and she sees too much. She knows too much.

Now suddenly my world is spinning, and she’s shoving a baseball back in my hand while baking cookies with my grandmother. She’s the devil and an angel all in one fiery little package. I decide I’ll wait her out. She’ll go back to the city. Only suddenly I don’t want her to leave, and everything I’ve settled for in my life isn’t enough. I want to play ball and I want her, but there’s that secret that won’t let go, but neither will she.

About Beautifully Damaged:

Peyton Kroft was his forever, until the unthinkable happened. Walking away all those years ago had been the right thing to do. But, a decade later, he was ready to put the past behind him. Moving to San Francisco and hiring his first love, the city’s top designer, was a good place to start. Seeing her again stirred up feelings he thought he’d long buried. He wanted her. Just one taste of those sweet lips. The girl like a light leading him home. She’d found a way back in somewhere she could never stay. And, the worst part—he liked her there.

~~~
Jackson Vance broke her heart. He took half of it with him on his way out of town. Picking up the pieces hadn’t been easy, but more than nine years later, Peyton is living her best life. Coming face to face with her first love is not on the agenda. Emerald green eyes that see straight to her soul. Jackson Vance is beautiful, broken, and everything she’s ever wanted. Exclusive Excerpt:
He leaned close to her as she pulled her purse strap over her shoulder in a huff. “Is someone jealous?”
She clutched her chest in dramatic fashion. Her reaction was worthy of an award-winning Broadway performance. Making all sorts of breathy noises, sure he understood how appalled she was. He rolled his eyes as they walked toward their gate.
“I’m not the slightest bit jealous of your voluptuous vixen.”
“Sure, you aren’t,” he said with a chuckle.
This type of banter needed to stop. Starting something with Peyton wasn’t an option. He’d come here to make amends, not fan the flames. She seemed happy, and he needed to let her be. But, he was so drawn to her, like a powerful current he couldn’t swim against. Always provoking, and stirring, and challenging him.
“You’re so full of yourself. I’m in an amazing relationship with a wonderful man. He’s about to be the freaking mayor of San Francisco for God’s sakes. I’m hardly jealous. I happen to care about you because you’re my friend, and I don’t want to see you get hurt.”
“You’re worried about me, huh?”
“Did I stutter?”
His laugh echoed and they continued walking. The masses of people moving through the airport were on a mission to get wherever it was they were going.
“Let me get this straight. You’re worried the voluptuous vixen is going to hurt me? Physically? I sure hope you’re right.” His night with Lana was a bust, mainly because he couldn’t get the jealous pain in the ass walking beside him off his mind.
“You’re disgusting. Forget it.”
She wrestled her bag from his hand and walked ahead, her suitcase thumping behind her. Fucking adorable. Angry and feisty. He played with fire, teasing her like this. Choosing to argue about ridiculous bullshit instead of pressing her up against the wall and covering her mouth with his like he wanted. He didn’t know how not to want her. Nor did he know if it were even possible.
#FreebieFriday #BeachRead Edition
Summer Reading
I don’t know about you, but I find it extremely hard to concentrate on my writing in the summer. I’d much sooner be outside, in the garden, or lounging under the cherry tree reading all the amazing books on my TBR pile (which is ready to run away and hide, it’s so tall! lol).
I have deadlines I have to meet, but maybe, just maybe, they can wait another day or two. 🙂
How about you? Do you find summer distracting?
Here’s this week’s freebie links- enjoy!
A woman and child in danger teaches Nick life is worth living.
ALL SHE WANTS IS TO LIVE HER LIFE
Abused, Sara Sheridan finds the courage to escape her husband. She has no interest in getting mixed up with another alpha, attitude-laden male. Especially with her ex hot on her trail.
ALL HE CRAVES IS PEACE AND QUIET
Marine, Nick Kelley prefers solitude, away from the memories haunting him. So what is it about his reticent neighbor and her child that tempts him to give it up?
UNTIL LOVE GETS IN THE WAY
Nick and Sara’s growing attraction  leads them down a dangerous path as her ex-husband closes in on the new life she’s made for her daughter and threatens to blow it all apart.
Excerpt
“How did you find me?” Sara fell back as Tom pushed his way inside, followed closely by Sam, and then she caught sight of Fiona being led in by two other men. Her friend was cuffed, arms pulled taut behind her back. Her mouth, covered by a bright red handkerchief tied so tight it cut into her whitened cheeks, highlighted an obscene bruise. Her eyes, one of them black and blue, filled with tears, begging Sara to forgive her.
“GPS, my dear, you’ve heard of that I presume? I traced you from your own phone, that wasn’t very smart of you. So, this is where you’ve been hiding.” He waved the others into the room, locking the door behind them. “What, no kiss for your Husband? You do recall you have one of those, don’t you?”
He looked the same, so tall and handsome standing there in his perfectly pressed suit and tie, not a hair out of place. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. It was so obvious to her now. The narrow, cold eyes, the supercilious attitude, the rigid stance, the not-so-well-hidden-anger, had he always been that way? She didn’t like to think so. How could she have been so wrong about him? He’d pulled the wool over her eyes from the beginning.
“What time do you get off work?”
I glanced at my preoccupied colleagues in the crowded kitchen behind me and then back at him. “I should be done by eleven. Why?”
“There’s a diner down the street. I want you to meet me there.”
My face puckered like he’d squirted lemon juice at me. “What?”
“It’s called Rudy’s,” he said. “I’ll be the guy in the corner booth who looks pleased you’re on time.”
I opened my mouth to speak, but he’d already excused himself without waiting for my response. Dumbstruck, I stared after him, watching his long black coat swing behind him as he wove his way through the busy kitchen and saw himself out. What the heck was that about? It sure wasn’t a date because you ask people on a date. You don’t order them. I mean, that was super high on the list of things you don’t do, right? Up near the top next to you don’t meet weird men you don’t know in the middle of the night. I didn’t even know his name, for crying out loud!
But by the time I glanced at the clock, the decision was made. I was going, and I wouldn’t be late.
Instinctively, he dropped the towel, and his hands closed around her upper arms. “I’ve got you.”
No, he didn’t. She’d been managing on her own for years, and wasn’t about to start depending on a guy who’d left her all alone to deal with the consequences of their brief…thing. She tried to take a step back, but her double-crossing hands didn’t leave his shoulders. Instead, they slid down and molded to his chest.
“Sorry, I…” she stuttered.
“I’m not.” His hands closed over hers, and his thumbs caressed back and forth over the tops of her fingers.
An electric current shot up her arms, down her spine, and tingled all the way to her curling toes.
“I should be sorry.” Dylan’s soft breaths brushed over her cheeks. “Joe’s has a lot at stake, and your plumbing has been allowed to deteriorate due to lack of use.”
He had no idea.
His gaze smoothed over her burning cheeks. “That’s a problem I’d like to remedy for you.” A dimple appeared as one corner of his mouth lifted into a hint of a smile. “I’d benefit from it, too.” The dimple deepened.
Time slowed.
A bone-deep ache of desire stirred in her chest. Before she could stop herself, she went up on her tiptoes and pressed her lips to his.
#FreebieFriday Canada Day Edition #SummerReading
I can’t believe we’re heading into July already!
Is it just me, or does time move faster the older we get?
This week, I’m pleased to share a fun, heartwarming romance between two hot-headed personalities- you just know sparks are going to fly!
Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Gambling Hearts- Book 2
USA Today Bestselling Author Jacquie Biggar
Take two stubborn fools, mix a touch of fate, stir in some desire, and you have the recipe for a Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
Sophia Shaughnessy left her beloved home in order to prove once and for all she was more than a pretty face to her family and ex-boyfriend, Tony. But, it backfired. When her grandmother needed her most, she wasn’t there.
Tony Morrison had been in love with the youngest Shaughnessy for almost as long as he’d been employed at her family’s ranch. Trouble was, he had secrets. Things he couldn’t tell anyone, especially the beautiful Sophia. So, he’d let her go.
But now she’d returned, bringing the winds of change to the Texas ranch, and Tony wasn’t sure he could protect her from the fallout.
Free Today!- https://amzn.to/2IRjl4e
Tony was going down for the third time. He’d tried, dammit he’d truly tried to give Sophia space. Let her decide her future, follow her dreams. It had torn him apart to let her go the first time, but she’d been too young, innocent. Unaware of her place in the world. It wouldn’t have been fair to tie her to him, give her a child. The thought of his baby growing beneath her breast raised something wild and uncivilized within. He wanted to beat his chest and haul her off to his cave. Hold her there until she never wanted to leave. But, he couldn’t.
Quite simply, she meant too much to him to allow her to ruin her life.
He lifted his head and put some space between them, the cool air a sharp contrast to his overheated skin. Her eyes were still closed, and that delectable mouth made a little mewling sound that damn near cancelled his good intentions.
“Sophia, stop,” he growled. “We need to talk.” Her eyes flickered, an adorable frown marring the creamy perfection of her forehead. She took a step back and he felt the loss keenly.
“Why do you always do that?” she asked, resignation chasing shadows across her face.
“What?” he asked, afraid of the answer.
“Hide every time anyone gets too close.” She reached out to touch his cheek, then let her hand drop. “I’m tired of playing this game, Tony. You have to know how I feel about you, I’ve never made it a secret.” A sad smile touched her lips. “The ball is in your court now. What are you going to do about it?”
He stood there long after she’d left the family graveyard, the wind erasing the footprints she’d left in the sand and wondered if he would ever be brave enough to take a chance on love again.
Summer Lovin’- A Wounded Hearts Novella
Will two mismatched lovers find a way past their mistakes?
Mitch Taylor and Rebecca Sorenson share a secret.
Rebecca’s job as secretary of Cascade Elementary, the same school she attended as a child, is rewarding. She has a great group of friends, many of whom are married now. And if sometimes she wished it were her up there in that sparkling white dress…
Except, wait—she did get to wear bridal white. Granted, it was a slinky party dress and the justice of the peace was Elvis in a gold lame jacket, but still, the deed was done.
She’d tied the knot.
Mitch Taylor doesn’t do regrets. It would be a waste of energy bemoaning the mistakes he’d made in his life. The end of his promising football career taught him nothing in life was a guarantee.
Like love.
What were the chances two people from the same po-dunk town in Washington would end up together in a nightclub in Las Vegas? A few too many drinks later, a hasty ceremony performed by the king of rock ‘n’ roll, and they’d been hitched. The night that followed lived on in his dreams, but when he’d woken the next morning she was gone.
Will two mismatched lovers find a way past their mistakes?
Rebecca was in Hell.
What other explanation could there be for the reappearance of Mitch in her life when she’d worked so diligently to avoid him for the best part of eighteen hundred and eighteen days—not that she was counting.
The divorce papers sitting on the desk at home were burning a hole through her brain, making her ache with things she dared not admit.
He looked amazing, by far the handsomest man in a room full of fine-looking men. His white dress shirt emphasized the breadth of those impossibly wide shoulders, honed to steel by years of honest manual labor. But then she’d always admired that about him. When his football career had come to an abrupt end he could have turned to a bottle and no one would have faulted him for it. Instead he picked himself up, went to a community college, got his welding ticket, and opened a business. Now his work was often sought after from all over the state and his shop had grown from a backyard garage to a fully equipped warehouse on a prime piece of Tidal Falls land. Mitch Taylor was a local success story.
He grasped her hand and she reluctantly followed his lead across a floor now packed with swaying bodies. He didn’t stop until they reached a shadowed alcove off to one side of the stage. When he turned and held out his arms she stepped forward like a lamb, letting his jacket drop onto a nearby chair. The moment his arms wrapped around her and his calloused fingers found the bare skin of her lower back, Becky knew she was in trouble.
Her startled gaze rushed upward and tangled in the molten heat of his amber eyes. The light and shadows created by their surroundings turned his face lean and mysterious and oh-so-hypnotic. Someone bumped into them but she barely noticed, she was so caught up in his aura. It had been like this before—in Las Vegas.
Rebecca tried to pull away, her heart beating double time, an out-of-sync counterpoint to the drums playing on stage. Mitch simply tugged so that she had to grasp the front of his shirt to keep from falling—not that he would have let her. There were many things about Mitch Taylor that bothered her, but she never doubted his kindness.
He bowed his head and rested his cheek against her temple and his voice rumbled through her soul. “It’s just a dance, sweetheart. What are you afraid of?”
Everything.
Him.
Herself.
The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis
Release Date: June 18, 2019
LemonSisters cover.jpeg
The Lemon Sisters, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Jill Shalvis.
When Brooke’s older sister, Mindy, shows up at her door with her three kids in tow, she barely recognizes her sibling who looks like she’s on the verge of a total breakdown. While adventurous, wanderlust Brooke was always the problem child, eager to slip free of Wildstone and its small-town constraints, Mindy was the golden child, who never had a hair out of place or a GPA below 4.0. The Mindy that arrives at Brooke’s apartment however, is a far cry from the ever-perfect doctor’s wife.
Brooke’s further stunned when Mindy asks to trade places with her for a few days so she can pick up her pieces and put herself back together. What Mindy doesn’t realize is that Brooke is just as broken. Her sister needs her though, so Brooke takes the kids and returns to Wildstone.
But how does one go home after seven years away and what feels like a lifetime of secrets? It doesn’t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrett’s no longer interested, or so he says. Only his words don’t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she long ago shoved deep.
The sisters begin to wonder if the childhood taunts were true, are they lemons in life? In love? True or not, they know one thing—you can’t run far enough to outpace your demons. And when long-dead secrets surface, they’ll have to overcome their differences and learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.
Excerpt:
“Okay,” she said. “Time for me to go to bed.”
“Or you’re running,” he said. “Again.”
She closed her eyes and told herself to ignore the soft taunt. No matter what they’d been – or hadn’t been – to each other, she wasn’t looking for love with anyone, and certainly not a wash and repeat with the one man who could destroy her. It wasn’t as if she’d been a monk. She’d dated, but she hadn’t let anyone in. Not ever. Even Cole had complained about the brick walls she’d encased her emotions in.
And he was right. She could get involved to a point, but she always pulled back.
“You don’t have to run from me, you know,” Garrett said. “There’s no reason for there to be anything but honesty between us.”
Yes, there was… “Maybe I’m just not feeling it.”
Another soft laugh. “Okay.”
“Hey,” she said and poked a finger in his pec. His hard, ungiving, sexy pec. “If I was feeling it, you’d know.”
“Yeah? How?” he challenged.
“I’d be …flirty. I certainly wouldn’t be thinking of all of your faults.”
He grinned. How like a man to not be worried about his faults.
“So what are these so-called faults?” he asked, curious. Still not concerned.
“Well, for starters, you’re wearing black knit boxers with bananas on them.”
This made him laugh outright. “Someone sent me a subscription box. They come once a month. Last month’s pair had cocks all over them.”
“Like … chickens, or…?”
He was still smiling. “If you’re curious, I’ll be happy to wear them tomorrow and give you a peek.”
“Whatever,” she said. “And the fact that some woman sent you a subscription to undies is another reason I’m not feeling it. You’ve stayed friends with every single person you’ve ever met.”
“And that’s a fault?”
She shrugged. Of course it wasn’t a fault. It was the opposite of a fault. “Well, except for me, of course.”
“Because you don’t answer phone calls, texts, emails…” He tilted his head. “Tell me something.”
Oh boy. “What?”
“Why did you and your last boyfriend break up? That Cole guy.”
“I told you, he’s my boss.”
“But you’re sleeping together,” he said, his eyes holding hers prisoner. “Or you were.”
“How do you know that?”
He smiled grimly. “You just told me.”
Dammit. She crossed her arms over her chest. “We’re not together if that’s what you’re asking.”
“Why?”
“Why what?” she asked.
“Why aren’t you together?” he pressed.
“Because I don’t like him like that.”
Did his eyes warm very slightly, or was that her imagination? “Because you’re just not feeling it?” he asked mockily, using her words.
She rolled her eyes. “You think you’re funny. How about we talk about you. Tell me about the girlfriend you said you don’t have. The one who called you the other day for a hookup.”
“It wasn’t a hookup. She dumped me.”
She snorted. “Right. You expected me to believe a guy who looks like you do, and is funny and smart like you are, got dumped?”
“Actually, I expect you to believe whatever I tell you.” He shifted close until they were knee to knee. “Because I’ve never lied to you, Brooke. Never will.”
About IT’S A GHOST’S LIFE (Murder By Design #5)
When the bitterly cold days of January descend on Cleveland, Bailey Burke finds her “Put It Where?” home staging business is as frozen as her toes. The only bright spot is the return of her friend Ryan after his, ahem, eviction from heaven. Especially since no other dead people seem to be harassing her in recent weeks.
Yet when her grandmother’s bingo buddy turns up frozen solid in a stranger’s back yard, Bailey is the only one who finds the death suspicious. Bailey knows fashion and she knows Vera, a one-time film star, would not be caught dead, literally, in a stained nightgown and cheetah-print boots. Determined it prove it is homicide and not dementia, she enlists Ryan’s help to investigate, despite his ghostly limitations.
This time Bailey is ready to play it smart, solve the crime, have the bad guy do the time… only all is fair game when it comes to eccentric backstabbing biddies at bingo.
Read an Excerpt from IT’S A GHOST’S LIFE
Vera used her phone way more than Grandma Burke. She had social media accounts where she followed fashion and Old Hollywood accounts. She had TMZ. Rent the Runway. Images of sexy men reading books. She had a reading app with hundreds of books on it, from classics to romance novels to modern literature like The Kite Runner.
Her texts were from her friends and her niece, Eva. A man I assumed was her nephew. A couple of guys who were clearly flirting with her. I scrolled through the thread with the man named “Colin” and let out a startled yelp. Right there in their conversation going back and forth, was a dick pic. “Dang, Vera.” I quickly scrolled past it, then out of pure curiosity went back because it didn’t look like a selfie from a ninety-year-old man.
They say that men don’t age there the way they do elsewhere but even so… the thighs appeared to be a man in his prime. I suddenly felt like a naughty schoolgirl. Vera might be a cougar, and that was all well and good, but I had a boyfriend.
“Moving on, Bailey.” I closed that thread a heartbeat after I should have, and felt guilty as all get-out for that.
Then I found a thread with a man named Stanley.
It appeared he had come into town and had made plans to see her Friday night.
So lovely to see you again, she’d written at midnight on Friday.
Interesting. I wonder if he had any clue she had passed away?
I needed to call him and ask some questions but I needed to work up the courage to do that.
Dashing back downstairs I snagged a crystal flute from her dining room hutch, and using a towel from the kitchen, opened the champagne. I took the bottle and the glass upstairs and poured in Vera’s bedroom.
“To you, Vera,” I said, glancing around her inner sanctuary. “You were a cool chick who lived life to the fullest. May you rest in peace, dahlin’.”
I half-expected her to answer me. Maybe I was hoping she would. But the room remained silent. Vera had a record player on an etagere in the corner and I opened it to see what record was on it. Glenn Miller. I turned it on, not wanting to snoop in silence.
Sipping champagne, I went through Vera’s closet, drooling over the vintage pieces nestled up against the modern designers. Nothing was cheap. There were classic, timeless pieces, then funky and fun accessories. She had mastered the art of dressing in well-made basics, then adding shoes, jewelry, a turban, or a funky shawl to change up her look.
Her shoes were to die for.
I gave a laugh of horror in the closet at that thought. To die for. Yikes.
There were drawers lined with felt that had a drool-worthy collection of brooches, bracelets, rings, and necklaces. She even had hairpins that I suspected were from the 1930s. I did notice what looked like some odd empty spots in a few drawers and I wondered how closely Pam had inspected the collection. Or if Pam had swiped a few items on her way out.
There were four stacks of hat boxes, which was glorious.
Beside them were photo boxes. Inside I found newspaper clippings from seventy-five years earlier.
Miss Vera Rosenbaum, 21, model with the House of Chanel, is engaged to legendary film star, Frank Torro, 37. Nuptials to be held at the private home of Humphrey Bogart in a simple ceremony, in accordance with wartime sacrifice.
There was an engagement photo where Vera looked way older than she actually was at the time. Dressed in a suit with shoulder pads, she looked glamourous as hell. Her lips were dark, eyebrows dramatic, hair perfectly curled. Her fiancé was what I would call dapper but not particularly handsome. He was glancing affectionately down at her. On the other hand, she was staring boldly into the camera, sensual and full of life.
“Age is a funny thing, Vera, isn’t it?” I said out loud in the closet, draining my glass.
The box was full of old photos. Wedding photos of Vera at different ages. Photo shoots. A three-legged race on the lawn of a mansion, palm trees in the background. Runners laughing as they held on to each other.
Man, I was having a melancholy day.
There were love letters in the box too. Passionate notes from Vera’s third husband, things like “Even on the darkest day, you are the sun that warms my soul.”
Now it’s all text messages.
I would fall over if Marner wrote me a note.
There was also a nasty note from a woman that Vera had kept, which I found fascinating.
It was a woman named June calling Vera a homewrecking whore.
“Why would you save this?” I murmured.
And was June still alive? Had she gotten her final revenge on Vera? That seemed unlikely. She was probably ninety herself.
The record playing cut off suddenly.
I jumped, dropping the letter from angry June.
My heart started racing.
It didn’t sound like the record had ended on its own. It had cut off mid-song.
Could Vera do that?
Then I realized I heard footsteps.
Shoot.
Crawling on my belly, I reached the closet door and tried to ease it closed so as not to alert the intruder.
It was too late. I was on my stomach, staring at Italian loafers.
Being an adult has its advantages…
Lucas Abbott and his identical twin grew up sharing everything—including a reputation for funny, idiotic behavior. But now that Lucas is ready to shed that lovable-idiot image, grow up and have a real, adult relationship, the joke’s on him. He and his twin have fallen for the same woman.
Crushed and hoping a few days on the slopes will work out his frustrations, he heads for Stowe, Vermont. All thought of fun and relaxation flies away as a car spins out in a snowstorm, and his firefighter/paramedic training kicks into high gear.
Excerpt
Chapter 2
As usual, their mom had made pizza from scratch for their birthday—sausage and onion for him and pepperoni and peppers for Landon, along with special orders for the others. Normally, Lucas loved the traditions and the way his mother still paid attention to the details with each of her ten children, even though they were grown and some had kids of their own.
But tonight, with Landon and Amanda seated directly across the table from him, Lucas could barely swallow the delicious pizza or the beer his father had opened for him. He had nothing to say to anyone, which was rare in and of itself. Lucas Abbott always had something to say, especially in the midst of his boisterous family, all of whom had come to celebrate their brothers’ birthday. As the eighth child in a family of ten, one learned to speak up early or be drowned out by the noise.
When everyone was there, they were close to twenty people as his siblings were pairing off, getting married and having babies like wildfire these days. Their elusive, quiet brother Wade had shocked the living shit out of them recently by showing up with a wife none of them had met until after he and Mia had said “I do.” No one had seen that coming, but Wade seemed happier than Lucas had ever seen him. Mia’s long-lost father was throwing them a big wedding in Boston in June that everyone would be going to. Would Landon bring Amanda to that, too?
The noise level in the dining room was probably registering on the Richter scale. Normally, he’d be right in the middle of the fray. Tonight, he had a splitting headache.
Elmer nudged him. “What’s up with you?” Fortunately, his grandfather kept his voice down, so the question wasn’t heard by everyone else.
“Nothing.”
“Not like you to pick at the pizza. You’re more likely to inhale than pick.”
“I’m not that hungry tonight.”
Elmer’s white brows furrowed as he placed a hand on Lucas’s forehead. “You’re not feverish.”
Molly zeroed in on Elmer’s hand on Lucas’s forehead. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. The pizza is great, Mom.”
Though she accepted his answer, he could tell by the way his mother looked at him that he hadn’t fooled her.
Per the tradition, she brought out one big cake, half chocolate for him and half vanilla for Landon, and they blew out their candles together. They’d done that twenty-six other times, and it had never once occurred to Lucas that he ought to have his own damned cake as a grown-ass man. Until now.
“Happy birthday, bro,” Landon said, giving him a warm smile.
“Same to you.” Lucas could barely stand to look at the face that was nearly the mirror image of his own. He felt naked without the beard that left almost nothing to distinguish him from his identical twin.
Clearly Amanda preferred Landon to him if the way she giggled at every stupid thing his brother said was any indication.
She’d worn her dark hair up tonight, which only accentuated her pretty green eyes and the smattering of freckles across her nose that he’d found both cute and sexy. He didn’t recall her giggling so much when they went out and was thankful for that. In general, giggling wasn’t something he found overly attractive in a woman.
But damn if he didn’t find the rest of her overly attractive. She was downright gorgeous. He’d thought so from the first time he saw her in the conference room, surrounded by sex toys as she indoctrinated the family on the line of products her company produced.
And no, it hadn’t been the sex toys that had gotten to him. It’d been her. The confident way she spoke about something that most people had trouble talking about in private, let alone in a room full of strangers, had really done it for him. This was a woman who owned her sexuality and her freedom to express it.
That’s where his attraction toward her had started. But it had only flourished during the evening they spent together talking with an ease he didn’t often experience with someone he’d just met.
They’d covered everything from their families to their hometowns to their favorite sports, movies, books, TV shows, and it had been… easy. Fun. He’d immediately wanted to do it again and had thought she felt the same way, but watching her now with Landon, he could see that she had found a connection with him, too. Perhaps a stronger connection than she’d found with Lucas. If that was the case, there was nothing he could do about it. The choice was hers to make, and she’d clearly made it.
He stood, taking his grandfather by surprise. “Where you going, boy?”
“Gotta get home. I’ve got an early morning tomorrow.”
“Where you got to be?” Landon asked.
“I’m covering for Denny.” Lucas referred to one of the paramedics they worked with. “His wife has an ultrasound, and they’re going to find out what they’re having.”
“Oh, cool.”
“You didn’t open your presents,” Molly said.
“I told you guys no presents.”
“When do we ever do what we’re told?” Linc asked.
Lucas took the time to open the gifts from his parents—some new tools for the shop, a sleeping bag to replace the one he’d trashed after the last camping trip, a pair of the cargo shorts he wore in the summer, a book about Lewis and Clark that he’d been meaning to get and a watch with GPS capability.
“Thanks, Mom. I love it all.”
“You’re very welcome.”
He appreciated that she seemed to get that he wanted out of there. But he hoped she knew it wasn’t because he didn’t love the time with his family.
Tomorrow, he would do the shift for Denny during the day, and then he had three days off before his next shift at the firehouse. That was enough time to hit the road and get out of town for a couple of days. If his brother was going to be falling all over Amanda, he didn’t have to stick around for the show.
After he said his goodbyes to the others, his mother met him in the mudroom.
“You really shouldn’t have gotten presents, Mom.”
She shrugged off the statement. “It’s fun for me to find things I think you’d like.”
“Well, thank you. For the gifts, the pizza, the cake. For everything.”
“Are you all right, Luc? You aren’t yourself tonight.”
“I’m all right. Just fighting off a cold.”
“Are you sure that’s all it is?”
“Yep.” The last thing he’d ever do is confess to anyone that he was jealous of his brother. Such a stupid, pointless emotion, and one he’d felt rarely enough to be unfamiliar with how to deal with it. He kissed his mother’s forehead. “I’ve got a few days off, and I’m going to take a run over to Stowe tomorrow.” One of his best friends from Bowdoin College lived there, so no one would question why he was going. They didn’t need to know that he wouldn’t be seeing Craig this time around.
“Supposed to snow tomorrow. Be careful driving.”
“I will. Don’t worry.”
“You know better than to tell me not to worry.”
“I’ll be fine. If there’s one thing your children know how to do, it’s take care of themselves. You saw to that.”
“True. I’m very proud of that.”
“Then don’t worry. I have snow in my DNA.” He hugged her and headed out the door before he had to see Landon and Amanda again. Was he being ridiculous running from them? Yes, and he knew it, but so be it. He didn’t want to deal with it, especially on his freaking birthday.
He got in the truck, started it and cranked the heat, hoping it wouldn’t take long to warm up. It was bloody freezing, as per usual for the last week in March in Vermont, where winter tended to hang on until after the first buds of spring appeared on the trees. Keeping an eye on his parents’ dogs, George and Ringo, who’d followed him outside, he backed out of the driveway and glanced back at the house to see his mom still at the door, watching him go.
Lucas hoped she’d forgive him for leaving the party early, but he’d needed to get out of there before he gave away how he was feeling to the whole family. This was all new territory for him. He wasn’t one to have secrets or things he wanted to keep hidden. What you saw was what you got with Lucas Abbott, and he had no clue how to navigate this situation.
Keeping an eye out for rogue moose, he drove to the family’s Christmas tree farm that was shuttered until spring planting. Normally, he loved the isolation and the serenity of life at the farm, but, like everything else the last few days, it didn’t bring the usual comfort. He was edgy, out of sorts, off his game and feeling lost in a sea of familiar places and people.
His plan to get the hell out of here for a few days was looking better to him with every passing minute. Inside the loft apartment over the barn, he started a load of laundry and pulled a duffel bag with the Butler Volunteer Fire Department logo from under the bed.
He and Landon were both lieutenants in the department, charged with handling most of the administrative work that earned them small salaries. Lucas’s was enough to cover most of his expenses, which were minor thanks to the fact that he didn’t have to pay rent. He got to live at the farm in exchange for keeping an eye on the place in the off-season and acting as the caretaker on behalf of the family business. Between his fire department salary and the sale of the furniture and other wood items he crafted, he eked out a pretty decent living, but his needs were minimal.
Would a woman like Amanda be satisfied with the life that had always more than satisfied him, or would she find it lacking? And since when did he care what anyone else thought of his life?
Since the best first date in history, that’s when.
He had put his laundry in the dryer and opened a beer when the phone rang. Seeing his grandfather’s number on the caller ID, he took the call. “What’s up, Gramps?”
“I was thinking about you on the way home and decided to give you a ring. You weren’t yourself tonight, and I’m wondering if I know why.”
Amused as always by his grandfather, Lucas leaned back against the kitchen counter and smiled. “Knock yourself out.”
“I think you and your brother have set your sights on the same woman, and that’s got you all turned around.”
Lucas knew he shouldn’t be surprised that Elmer had figured out his dilemma.
“Am I warm?”
“Pretty warm.”
“Ah, thought so. It’s a heck of a thing to meet someone who really strikes your fancy. Happened to me once upon a time, and it was the worst feeling in the world.”
Lucas stood up straighter. “When did it happen to you?”
“With your grandmother. I met her when she was dating my cousin.”
“No way.”
“Yes way, and it was awful, I tell you.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing, and that was the hardest part. I loved my cousin. We were as close as brothers. I never would’ve done anything to hurt him.”
“Since I know how this story ends, I have to know how you ended up together.”
“She told him she fancied me.”
“Whoa! How did he take that?”
“Punched me in the mouth,” Elmer said with a low guffaw. “That’s how I knew she’d picked me.”
“Wow, Gramps. I had no idea.”
“We didn’t talk about it much after the fact. I remained close to my cousin until the day he died, and I went out of my way to make sure there was never any bad blood between us.”
“Did he ever get married?”
“Yep. Married a great gal a couple years later, and the four of us ran around together for the rest of his life.”
“I’m glad he ended up happy, too.”
“Believe me—so was I. Second-happiest day of my young life was standing up for him at his wedding.” After a pause, Elmer said, “You never really know what people go through before they end up with a happily ever after, son. It’s not always rainbows and unicorns or straight lines that lead from point A to point B. A lot of times, it’s hard and messy and painful.”
“Yeah,” Lucas said, marveling at how Elmer had homed right in on everything Lucas was feeling.
“But the most important thing is family. Your brother is your closest friend, your soul mate, if you believe in such things. The two of you have been like two peas in a pod from the word go. I’d hate to see anything come between you.”
“Me, too.”
“Then don’t let it, Luc. Amanda seems like a nice gal with a good head on her shoulders. If she’s taken a shine to Landon, well, then, there’s nothing you can really do about that. But being angry with him over it isn’t going to make it better for you. It’ll only make everything worse.”
Elmer was right. Of course he was. He was always right. “Very true.”
“I’m glad you agree. Amanda is only here for a short time. Brothers are forever.”
“Especially identical twin brothers.”
Elmer laughed. “Especially that. You okay, pal?”
“Yeah, Gramps, I’m good. This helped a lot. I’m going up to Stowe for a couple of days to ski and clear my head.”
“That’s a great idea. Have a wonderful time.”
“Thanks for calling.”
“Happy birthday, Lucas. I think this is going to be your best year yet.”
“I hope so.”
“Love you, son.”
“Love you, too, Gramps.”
Lucas put down the phone, feeling thankful for the unconditional love of his grandfather, who had always been a steady presence in his life. Elmer had made an excellent point. It would be foolish to allow a woman he barely knew to come between him and the twin brother who was also his closest friend. He wasn’t going to let that happen and would use the time away to get his head back on straight.
Amanda was a great person, and he really liked her. However, she certainly wasn’t the only woman in the world. If she had decided Landon was the one for her, Lucas would find someone else. Stepping aside was the right thing to do. He had no doubt about that after talking to his grandfather.
He couldn’t believe the story Elmer had told him about the early days of his relationship with Lucas’s grandmother. He’d never thought too much about how his grandparents might’ve gotten together, but he hadn’t pictured anything like the story Elmer had relayed.
The next day, after putting in a ten-hour shift at the firehouse that had included calls to a couple of snow-related fender benders and one elderly resident who’d needed transport to the hospital, Lucas set out for Stowe. Normally a ninety-minute drive, tonight it was slow going due to the snow that continued to fall. Lucas took his time, keeping the speedometer around forty and following in the tracks left by an eighteen-wheeler that was a mile or so ahead of him.
Driving in snow was second nature to him after growing up in northern Vermont. If Vermonters stayed home every time it snowed, they’d go weeks without leaving the house some years.
He’d called his friend Craig, who’d told him to use the house while he was out of town on business. Lucas had the security code to the house and was eager for some time alone on the slopes. Physical activity always helped to clear his mind, and he hoped it would have the usual effect on him this time.
He hated being out of sorts like this and needed to shake it off and get back to normal. Moping around wasn’t his style. At the peak of ski season in Stowe, he could also count on some good nightlife. Perhaps a night with a snow bunny would fix what ailed him. One thing he knew for certain was that getting out of Butler had already made him feel better than he had in days.
Two hours into the ride, he was yawning and guzzling the coffee he’d brewed at the firehouse to keep himself awake. His eyes were tired from staring into the snow that had seemed to intensify as he got closer to Stowe. Finally, he took the exit onto the local road that led to Craig’s place and found that it hadn’t been plowed.
“Awesome…”
He slowed the truck to a crawl, inching along while hoping he was still on the actual road. As he rounded a bend, he watched with horror as the car in front of him fishtailed wildly before pitching off an embankment into a ditch.
“A baby is God’s opinion that life should go on.” —Carl Sandburg
On the Rocks by Kandi Steiner
Release Date: June 13, 2019
OTR Cover FINAL.png
On the Rocks, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Kandi Steiner.
Noah Becker is nothing but trouble.
That’s what Mama told me when I was a kid, kicking his pew in church and giggling at the games we’d play. It’s what the town said when his father died and the Becker brothers went wild.
And it’s on repeat in my mind the day I walk into the whiskey distillery where he works to buy a wedding gift for my fiancé.
He’s trouble.
Dirty, sweaty, rude trouble.
No matter how many times I repeat it, I can’t escape Noah in our small Tennessee town. And the more I run into him, the more he infuriates me. Because he sees what no one else does.
He sees me—the real me.
The me I’m not sure I’m allowed to be.
I’m Ruby Grace Barnett, the mayor’s daughter. Soon to be a politician’s wife, just like Mama and Daddy always wanted. Soon to fulfill my family’s legacy, just like I always knew I would.
Until the boy everyone warned me about makes me question everything, like whether the wedding I’m planning is one I even want.
Everyone said Noah Becker was nothing but trouble.
If only I had listened.
A stand-alone, contemporary romance.
Excerpt:
I watched from the sidelines as Betty schooled Noah on the final dance scene from the classic movie — and one of her favorites. Noah, bless his heart, took it in stride. He held her hands, spun her gently, even went under water completely to give Betty some sort of “lift” that made her feel like Jennifer Grey.
That was when her smile was the largest — her eyes closed, face cast upward, arms out in the same iconic flight stance that the actress had done.
If I wasn’t laughing so hard, I might have cried at the sentiment.
After a dozen more run throughs, Betty called for a break, and the two of them swam up to the side of the pool where I sat. Betty took the lemonade I offered her, sipping and hollering across the pool at Mr. Buchanan — who was seated under the umbrellas. Noah rested his arms on the concrete edge, crossing them and resting his head on his forearm before he peered up at me through lashes still dripping with water.
His eyes were an endless blue, the light from the pool reflecting off them like a tropical dream.
“Enjoying your entertainment this afternoon, Miss. Barnett?”
I bit my lip against a smile. “Very much so, Mr. Becker. I never knew you were such a great dancer.”
“Oh, you should see me on the actual dance floor. I can two step and waltz and cha cha with the best of them. And don’t even get me started on what happens when ‘Watermelon Crawl’ comes on.”
“I’m sure it’s quite entertaining,” I mused, still dangling my feet in the cool water.
“When do I get to see your dance moves?”
I barked out a laugh at that. “Um, that would be approximately… never.”
“Never?” he asked, popping his head up off his arms with a look of injustice. “But you’ve seen all my moves, now. I show you mine, you show me yours. Isn’t that the deal?”
“I never agreed to that.”
He narrowed his eyes, running his forefinger and thumb over the stubble on his chin before he nodded. “I see…” Then, a wicked gleam came over those blue steel eyes, and before I could so much as scream, his hand wrapped around my wrist, tugging forward until I was off the ledge and under water.
I popped up instantly, not even able to open my eyes against the chlorine yet before I was swinging at him. “Noah!”
He laughed, catching my advances easily and pulling me into him. I blinked several times, shaking the drops from my eyes before I glared up at him.
“You jerk. Mama’s going to kill me for ruining my hair.”
“Mama will live,” he said, and then one arm wrapped around my waist, the other taking my hand in a leading position. “Now, let’s dance, little lady.”
With one pull of my hand and push of my hip, I spun away from him, reeling back in like a yo-yo and falling in line with his steps before I realized what was happening. Surprise ripped through me, brows shooting up to my hairline as he somehow managed to smoothly twirl me around that metaphorical dance floor even with water hitting us waist deep. My feet felt sluggish, the moves slower than if we were in boots on a hardwood floor, but somehow, that made it even more fun.
I laughed and laughed as he danced me around — until he had the bright idea to flip me like a swing dancer. I emerged from the water beating on his chest again, which just made him laugh harder. And when we were breathless, Noah tugged me to the side of the pool again.
“Thank you for the dance,” he said, both of us still breathing heavily as he wrapped his strong, rugged hands around my waist. For a moment, he just held them there, the rough pad of his thumbs smoothing over my exposed hip bones. My smile fell, chest still heaving as my eyes slipped to his lips.
I didn’t know why I looked at them.
I didn’t know why I couldn’t look away.
Noah swallowed, tightening his grip on my hips before he lowered in the water a little and helped push me back up onto the edge of the pool where I’d been seated before. Once I was steady, he released his hold on me, backing away with a distant look in his eyes that I couldn’t decipher before he tore them from me and looked at Betty, instead.
About Kandi:
Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.
An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.
When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
His broad shoulders and short cropped hair made him look a little dangerous and a whole lot capable. Of many things.
“What’s going on in that head of yours, Red?” He tugged on a lock of her hair and gave her a smile that shot fireworks through her blood.
“I was just thinking that I don’t want to waste the day or two I have here thinking about my brother, my dad, or anything else.”
Liam stepped closer. “Seems like you could use a little break from them.”
She laughed at his dead-on assessment. “How is it that you hardly know me and you see things other people don’t?”
In her professional life, everyone had the utmost respect for her father and brother. The dynamic duo of the fitness center world. Never mind the long days and nights and hours that Isla spent making things come together. Things like the deal with Conroy Hotels. Her father’s gyms were going to be a part of ten Conroy properties starting in the new year. Thanks to Isla. Only, no one had thanked her, except Jonathan Conroy, who she’d struck the deal with. He’d been gracious and kind. A great negotiator. He’d treated her as an equal.
“Maybe it’s because I’m looking so close,” he said, his voice lowering. Had she moved? Did he? She wasn’t sure, but the front of each of their bodies was touching, and despite the chill in the air, Isla’s skin warmed beneath her layers.
“Hmm. You are looking quite close,” she said, not intending for her voice to come out so husky.
Liam ran his thumb over her cheek, then back, down over her lower lip. Her knees went loose and she pressed her hand to his chest. It was hard and solid like the brick wall at her back. But so much hotter. With his jacket open, she pressed her hand to his soft shirt and felt the sleek muscle beneath.
“I like what I see,” he said, his face coming closer.
“Me too,” she whispered. A little too much. Could she blame her overtaxed emotions? Probably not. There was something about Liam.
The first touch of his lips pushed thoughts of anything other than him, of getting closer, out of her brain. One of his hands threaded through her hair, anchoring her where he wanted so he could slant his mouth over hers, teasing and testing, before diving all the way in.
Isla’s fingers fisted in his shirt, curling the material in her palm as she arched to get closer, to take more. Liam gentled the kiss, slowing it down before he leaned back, enough so he could speak but so they were still sharing the same air, their breath mingling and intertwining sort of like their bodies.
“Wow,” he whispered, pressing his brow to hers.
“Yeah. Wow.” Two or three days of doing exactly that didn’t seem like nearly enough.
Liam’s hands ran down her arms, back up, over her shoulders, and then he pulled her close and wrapped his around her, hugging her tight and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. Isla sank in. If she could only have a couple days with him, she was going to enjoy every second of it. Which meant blocking out all of the questions and the uncertainty.
When he pulled back, Liam’s eyes were a mix of desire and sweetness. “You like Johnny Cash?”
Isla laughed at the quick change of subject. “The Man in Black? Sure.”
“I was hoping you’d say that,” he said, taking her hand again. “Come on.”
“Would you just relax?” Marco said when the woman he’d put in a fireman’s carry continued to struggle. “We’re almost…” His legs buckled. She’d gotten a foot free and kicked him in the crotch. Despite the emasculating pain, he regained control of her legs and her feet and managed to make it to the end of the aisle without falling to his knees. “Keep your head down,” he said, an angry snap in his voice as he ducked out the door.
He winced. She might have nearly unmanned him, but less than twenty minutes ago her life had probably flashed before her eyes.
The winds had picked up, noisily whipping the flag over the terminal, rattling the metal staircase he carefully traversed to the tarmac. The plane’s captain looked over from where he sat in the back of the ambulance, having his hand wrapped. He blanched and shot to his feet, shaking off the paramedic.
“What happened to her? Is she going to be okay?” he asked as he jogged toward them.
“The only thing wrong with me is him. He completely overreacted to the situation, ruined the interior of the cabin, and then decided to play He-Man.” She tried to wriggle out of his hold. “Put me down. Now.”
The pilot looked relieved. “Don’t give him a hard time, T. He was just doing his job.”
“He’s right, ma’am. Now, if you promise not to kick me again, I’ll put you down.”
“So, what? If I don’t agree, you’re going to walk around with me over your shoulder for the rest of the freakin’ day?”
“When you put it like that…” He kept his amusement in check as he lowered her feet to the ground. He winced when she stood before him. Her hair and face were bloody. Both he and the pilot reached for her when she swayed.
She swatted their hands away. “I’m fine.”
“Of course you are. You just look like you’re auditioning for a horror flick.”
“That’s exactly what I thought,” Marco said, smiling companionably at the pilot. “By the way, man, that was some flying. Honestly, I don’t know how you held it together. From down here…” Marco trailed off. He didn’t think the woman needed to hear what it looked like from
the ground. “Anyway, great job.”
“I’d like to take cred—”
Arms crossed and head cocked, the woman interrupted the pilot. “He wasn’t the one flying the plane. I was.”
Marco laughed. “Yeah, right.”
“I’d take two steps back if I were you. Maybe four. Her legs are longer than they look.” The other man covered a grin with his bandaged hand.
Excerpt- BEACH WEDDING WEEKEND
Ciera leaned across her to fill Gram in. “Paige’s ex-boyfriend is back in town and he brought an actress with him.” She snagged the fork from Paige and pulled the cake in front of herself.
Gram nodded as if considering the situation. “And how much of a looker is this new girl?”
Ciera shot Aiden a worried look. Paige appreciated her friend trying to spare her feelings, but it wasn’t a secret. Anyone with eyes could see what kind of beauty they were dealing with. Paige looked right at Gram and gave her the most honest answer she could think of. “She could launch a thousand ships.”
“She’s very pretty,” Ciera added. Aiden gave Paige’s shoulders an encouraging squeeze.
“I see.” Gram twisted her mouth to the side in thought. “This reminds me of the time when Lorissa’s ex-husband returned with a supermodel who was as dumb as a box of rocks.” Gram often lacked a filter. Whatever thought ran through her head came out of her mouth, which Paige loved. It was always entertaining and so different from anything she’d grown up with.
“Are these real friends or soap opera friends?” Aiden asked. Until Paige met Gram, she was unaware soap operas still existed. Apparently they did. And Gram still watched them with diligence.
Gram gave Aiden a stern look. “Soap opera friends are real friends, dear.” She turned to Paige. Her weathered hand wrapped around Paige’s. The warm, maternal gesture was like a hug to her broken heart. “Did you love him?”
Visions of their year together paraded through her mind. Happy memories of sweet moments when the word forever sparkled with anticipation.
Paige let out a sigh. “Yeah.”
Sympathy flashed across Gram’s face. “Do you still love him?” Her voice was a little quieter this time, a little more personal. Which seemed appropriate since the question felt personal.
Sure, her heart had broken when he left, which dampened love’s euphoric glow, but hope had managed to keep some of the spark alive. In the back of her mind, even on her loneliest days, she clung to the image of him coming back. Someday they could pick up right where they left off, share life together, grow old together. That was love, right?
“I think so,” she said.
Gram squeezed her hand, her voice returning to its normal cheerful tone. “Then do what Lorissa did.”
Confusion fluttered through her. Gram’s sage advice was coming from a soap opera character? “What did she do?”
“She gave him the ole’ one-two.” Gram let go of Paige’s hand and held her fists in front of her face, jabbing the air in dainty punches. “You have to fight for love.”
“Fight for love?” Paige asked.
“It’s your life, kiddo. You gotta go after what you want.”
My Review
I love stories about divorced fathers trying to remain involved in their children’s lives.
Karina has written a gem here!
Joe Fraser has his hands full with his estranged father’s medical bills after a serious stroke, business dealings not panning out the way he needs them to, and a growing distance between him and his daughter. He doesn’t need advice from her nosy teacher.
When ten year old Kaitlin gets in trouble at school, Joe realizes he needs to make time in his busy schedule to go on a four day field trip in order to reconnect with his girl.
A rocky start makes him wonder if he made the right decision, not to mention a growing attraction to Kaitlin’s teacher. He manages to win over the girls he’s in charge of, but an emergency has him leaving camp early, creating misunderstandings that lead to an explosive confrontation and a kiss that gets out of hand.
Philippa Browne is drawn to the dour father of her favorite pupil, even as she sympathizes with his ex-wife. He seems to be more interested in his career than he is in his daughter and she can’t stand that.
She advises him he needs to step up before Kaitlin pays the price for his neglect. She’s surprised by the smart, funny, kind man she gets to know at camp and when she learns of the real reason for his absentminded parenting, she falls for him.
The problem is, she doesn’t want to fall in love.
I give Stay 4 lovely kisses- A sweet and spicy read!
Missing: The Lady Said No
The hero is a bumbling police investigator.
Growing up, I always wondered what it was that led Columbo to catch his man. When I started this mystery novel, he came to mind and so Detective Augustus Grant was born.
This story is set around the multi-million dollar horse racing industry. When a well-known breeder is found dead just days before the big race, Gus is brought in to investigate.
Is it suicide, or something much more devious?
Gus followed the stiff-necked manservant to the door of the den, though his emotions were tugging him back to Rebecca like a starved man to a banquet.He couldn_t believe how beautiful
What readers are saying:
Missing: The Lady Said No is an addictive mystery filled with cagy characters with the backdrop of the greatest horse race known to man. There’s a lot to uncover yet Biggar only reveals what she wants the reader to know at the time. Gripping sub-plots will keep you turning the pages, all leading up to an explosive climax. I read it in one sitting … yes, it was that good!
N.N. Light
The writer creates a group of characters that are hard to forget. The backstory on the characters plays an important roll in understanding who they are and why. Biggar only writes enough about the backstories to get you hooked which will leave you hanging on and wanting more. It all starts when esteemed breeder John Jorgenson is found murdered in his den. Because Jorgenson is so highly thought of in the community they call in the best crime solver for the case. Detective Gus Grant is on the case and he has a resume to impress. But just when the list of suspects can’t get any bigger, his ex-girlfriend Becky walks back into his life. Becky just so happens to be the last person to see the victim alive.
Will Gus discover what really happened in Mr. Jorgenson’s den? I won’t give to much away, because this is a page turner. A real must read! I highly recommend this book.
Excerpt
Gus followed the stiff-necked manservant to the door of the den, though his emotions were tugging him back to Rebecca like a starved man to a banquet.
He couldn’t believe how beautiful she’d become. She’d always been pretty, but now there was an added maturity to her features that suited her face. The tomboy figure he fondly remembered had become hills and valleys he ached to explore. They’d been best friends, then lovers, then enemies. It’d been his fault, that was the worst of it. He’d let his drive for a career ruin the only good thing in his life. He could tell himself he’d done his part. After getting his degree and returning to Bourbonville he had tried to find her. But she was right, he hadn’t tried hard enough.
Their relationship had already been floundering; it had seemed easier to let it die a natural death. He regretted that now. One glimpse of her had brought back all the old feelings. Memories of happier times.
Ernest reached for the door knob and was stopped by the officer on guard.
“Sorry, only trained personnel are allowed.”
Ernest glared at him. “I’ve worked in this household for years; I believe I am trained.”
The sergeant exchanged a helpless glance with Gus. “I’m sorry, sir. Those are the rules.”
Gus stepped between the two men before a full-scale war broke out. “It’s okay, sergeant.” He flipped open his badge. “I’m Detective Grant. The…” He waved a hand toward the butler.
Ernest lowered his brows. “Manservant.”
Gus nodded. “Manservant, was just showing me the way to the crime scene.”
The officer checked his badge, then reached back to open the door. The stench of death was immediate, a toxic mix of human waste impossible to forget. Gus turned his head to draw one last clean breath and met Rebecca’s anxious gaze.
That look gave him pause.
Why was she worried? Just how well did Rebecca know the owner of Balmoral?
“Coming, Detective?” The sergeant’s voice interrupted his musings. Gus shrugged off his misgivings and followed the man into the room, sliding past the grim-faced Ernest.
Nancy knelt by the victim, her hands covered with white gloves and booties on her feet. She glanced up when he walked in and pointed at his shoes. Gus dug through his coat pockets until he found his booties, put them on, nodded to the sergeant, and made his way over to her side.
“It’s a bad one,” she said, turning attention to her preliminary findings. “Single shot to the temple, through and through. Near as I can tell, time of death was sometime between midnight and three a.m., no sign of defensive wounds.” She stopped and gazed at him with world-weary eyes. “Who would do this, Augustus?”
Gus observed the brain matter splattered on the leather tufted chair and rich, red Aubusson carpet and his stomach churned. His first thought was crime of passion. There had been some effort made to set the scene up as a suicide. The gun rested in the victim’s open hand, finger wrapped around the trigger. A cut crystal tumbler lay on its side nearby, a stain wetting the carpet. Gus touched the wet spot and sniffed, rubbing the tips of his fingers—bourbon. The good kind. Not something a man bent on ending his own life would let go to waste.
“I’m not sure, Nancy, but I do know the brass will be all over this one, so take your time, okay? We don’t want to miss anything.”
She huffed out an indignant breath. “You telling me how to do my job, now?”
He held up a hand to halt her blistering tongue. “The Jorgensons are big news, that’s all I’m saying. Don’t they have a horse in the Derby this year?”
The sergeant, who had remained by the door, and watched their exchange with interest, piped up. “Forever Humble. Lots of money riding on that colt.” His face became animated. “You ever see him race, Detective? He’s some kind of fast. Likes to run the outside track. Gives me a heart attack every time.”
Gus smiled. “You a betting man…?”
“Fish, sir. Everyone calls me Fish.”
Nancy chuckled and the young man’s neck turned brick red.
“I’m not a gambler, no sir, but I admit I like to spend a Saturday now and then down at the track. It’s some exciting. You ever been, Mr. Grant?”
Gus shook his head. “No, can’t say as I have. Not that fond of horses, though I guess that’s the wrong thing to say in this house.” He admired the landscape watercolor on the wall, rolling hills with a herd of wild horses barreling straight at him, eyes crazy and manes flying as though they were about to burst the confines of paint and canvas.
“Augustus, there’s something you need to see.” Nancy’s voice was muffled as she stretched, shapely butt in the air, to reach something under the leather chair. She grunted and tugged until a bronze sculpture came into view. When she stood it on the carpet, he saw it was about twelve inches in height, a warrior on a horse, raised arm carrying a spear.
“There’s blood and hair fragments,” she said, turning it carefully to inspect the evidence. “I can’t be sure until I get it to the lab, but this looks like a match to our vic.”
Well, that explained why there were no defensive wounds. The poor sop probably didn’t know what hit him. Gus looked around until he found the suspiciously empty spot on the desk. He gave a wide berth to the corpse, conscious of Nancy’s critical gaze. The desk was one of those massive claw-foot affairs, mahogany maybe, rich and elegant instead of simply functional. He pulled a linen handkerchief out of his pocket and checked the drawers. An assortment of papers greeted him, some on household expenses, most on Jorgenson’s passion—thoroughbreds. Nothing that looked like a cause for murder.
Gus was about to replace the documents when a slip of yellowed paper lodged in the back of the drawer caught his eye. He reached in, using the hankie, and retrieved the handwritten note.
Do what I told you to do, or the truth will destroy you
The threat inherent on the scrap of paper chilled his blood. There was trouble brewing in the Jorgenson household, and Gus was afraid Rebecca was somehow involved.
