He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive… The Woman Left Behind by Linda Howard #RomSuspense #Read @AvonBooks

Jina Modell works in Communications for a paramilitary organization, and she really likes it. She likes the money, she likes the coolness factor—and it was very cool, even for Washington, DC. She liked being able to kick terrorist butts without ever leaving the climate-controlled comfort of the control room.

But when Jina displays a really high aptitude for spatial awareness and action, she’s reassigned to work as an on-site drone operator in the field with one of the GO-teams, an elite paramilitary unit. The only problem is she isn’t particularly athletic, to put it mildly, and in order to be fit for the field, she has to learn how to run and swim for miles, jump out of a plane, shoot a gun…or else be out of a job.

Team leader Levi, call sign Ace, doesn’t have much confidence in Jina–who he dubbed Babe as soon as he heard her raspy, sexy voice–making it through the rigors of training. The last thing he needs is some tech geek holding them back from completing a dangerous, covert operation. In the following months, however, no one is more surprised than he when Babe, who hates to sweat, begins to thrive in her new environment, displaying a grit and courage that wins her the admiration of her hardened, battle-worn teammates. What’s even more surprising is that the usually very disciplined GO-team leader can’t stop thinking about kissing her smart, stubborn mouth…or the building chemistry and tension between them.

Meanwhile, a powerful Congresswoman is working behind the scenes to destroy the GO-teams, and a trap is set to ambush Levi’s squad in Syria. While the rest of the operatives set off on their mission, Jina remains at the base to control the surveillance drone, when the base is suddenly attacked with explosives. Thought dead by her comrades, Jina escapes to the desert where, brutally tested beyond measure, she has to figure out how to stay undetected by the enemy and make it to her crew in time before they’re exfiltrated out of the country.

But Levi never leaves a soldier behind, especially the brave woman he’s fallen for. He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive.

She wanted to reach out and touch him, but despite what had just happened between them, she felt constrained. Their make-out session hadn’t changed anything. He was still the leader of that team, and he’d do whatever was necessary for their operational stability because their very lives depended on it. Her job was to safeguard them as much as possible, to provide an extra set of eyes looking for trouble or gathering information without exposing them to unnecessary danger.

If she were in an arguing frame of mind, she’d yell at him that the guys wouldn’t mind at all if she and Levi began a relationship, but she’d be lying. It would make a difference. The others would subconsciously begin looking for signs of favoritism, which would foster resentment and a lack of trust. Any argument between her and Levi would necessarily cause tension among the others. That was just how team dynamics worked; a disagreement between any two members was one thing, but throw sex into the mixture and it became combustible.

She turned her head and stared at the sky as grimly as he was, and for the same reason. As things stood, she had two choices: she could quit training and have Levi—for how long was up for debate—or she could stay on the team and deal with the bitter truth that they couldn’t be together.

She. Couldn’t. Quit. Doing so would betray everything she was, every sense of self. Maybe she drove herself past what a sane person would do, but didn’t the guys also do that? Being who they were, doing what they did, required more of them than, say, a regular nine-to-five job.

She had been happy with that nine-to-five job, but now this was her reality, and she wouldn’t, couldn’t, turn her back on it.

“I love a strong, smart heroine, and defense attorney Brynn Holloran is exactly that. Desperate Girls is a nail-biting read from the very first page to the final, shocking twist. I could not put this book down.” —Melinda Leigh, Wall Street Journal bestselling author

My Review

A fast-paced suspense read!

A killer escapes prison and embarks on a mission to murder those who placed him behind bars– including defense attorney Brynn Holloran.

Brynn doesn’t scare easily, but with the gruesome murder of her mentor and a high profile court case about to start, she is forced to accept the protection of a private security firm.

Erik Morgan isn’t thrilled with his assignment to keep a headstrong attorney from getting herself killed while police track down an escaped convict. But, he can’t deny he’s attracted to her, either.

Desperate to find this murderer before he kills anyone else, Brynn and Erik team up with police investigator Lindsey Leary to track the clues.

Brynn and Erik’s attraction soars and creates complications as a hunter closes in on his prey.

This story was not as good as her Tracer books, in my opinion. While the action built and there was a twist I didn’t see coming, the ending fell flat for me. Still, well worth the read, though!

I give Desperate Girls 4 lovely kisses- An entertaining read!

The truth hides in dark places . . . Cusp of Night by Mae Clair #Mystery #BookReview @MaeClair1

The truth hides in dark places . . .

Recently settled in Hode’s Hill, Pennsylvania, Maya Sinclair is enthralled by the town’s folklore, especially the legend about a centuries-old monster. A devil-like creature with uncanny abilities responsible for several horrific murders, the Fiend has evolved into the stuff of urban myth. But the past lives again when Maya witnesses an assault during the annual “Fiend Fest.” The victim is developer Leland Hode, patriarch of the town’s most powerful family, and he was attacked by someone dressed like the Fiend.

Compelled to discover who is behind the attack and why, Maya uncovers a shortlist of enemies of the Hode clan. The mystery deepens when she finds the journal of a late nineteenth-century spiritualist who once lived in Maya’s house—a woman whose ghost may still linger. Known as the Blue Lady of Hode’s Hill due to a genetic condition, Lucinda Glass vanished without a trace and was believed to be one of the Fiend’s tragic victims. The disappearance of a young couple, combined with more sightings of the monster, trigger Maya to join forces with Leland’s son Collin. But the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she comes to a hidden world of twisted secrets, insanity, and evil that refuses to die . . .

A member of the Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers, Mae loves creating character driven fiction in settings that weave contemporary elements of mystery and suspense with urban legend and folklore. Married to her high school sweetheart, she lives in Pennsylvania, and is passionate about writing, old photographs, a good Maine lobster tail and cats.

My Review

A spooky treat!

Recovering from an accident that almost took Maya Sinclair’s life, she moves to the small town of Hode’s Hill and is immediately swept into an ancient legend. Strange occurrences begin to happen in the home she’s renting, and along with a group of new friends, Maya researches the town’s history and finds a disturbing trail of murder and deceit.

Past and present collide when a young woman turns up dead and one of Maya’s friends is gravely wounded at the hands of a monster known as The Fiend. Research turns up a disturbing connection between The Fiend and Lucinda Glass, the blue lady of Hode’s Hill- a nineteenth century spiritualist who once lived in Maya’s home.

Twists and turns abound in this story. The author does a masterful job weaving past and present into a tale of the lengths we can go for unrequited love.

The ending was unexpected and admittedly left me sad, but that’s the goal. Trust me, you don’t want to pass this one up!

Favorite line:

“It’s time to get your ghost on.”

I give Cusp of Night 5 well-deserved lovely kisses- A Thrilling tale!

My Review:

This story starts out with a young woman landing on a strange planet to meet her new husband. She’s a mail-order bride looking to get a second opportunity at a decent life.

I was quickly reeled into the storyline and gained empathy for Carin who felt this was her last chance. It reminded me of the pioneer women; stronger and braver than they even realized they could be.

When Carin’s new husband is injured, and it’s left to her to provide for them and take care of the farm, she digs in and doesn’t give up even though the circumstances are far outside her comfort zone.

A misunderstanding rips these two apart and the reader is left hoping they will overcome their differences and find their happy-ever-after.

Rebecca does a great job of world building and creating complex characters in the limited space of a short story.

Favorite line:

But when she thought of Gabe and his reaction, the fantasy of raising her child in this environment evaporated like mist burning off in the morning sun.

Karina has long been on my auto-buy list. She made me a die-hard fan with Rachel and Devin’s story from What The Librarian Did. If you haven’t read the book yet, I highly encourage you to give it a try, you won’t regret it 🙂

She carries on with her impeccable style in Woo Me, a story based around three women and a cow costume. Yes, you read this right.

Jen and her two friends decide to get away together after going through disastrous relationships. What follows is a comedy of mishaps culminating with Jen getting rescued from hunky Logan Turner.

This story was in turns funny, sweet, and poignant.

The Sea King Motor Court sat off the two-lane highway heading inland out of Rarity Cove. A good four miles from the beach, the one-story, painted cinderblock structure was outdated and somewhat run-down, with a small swimming pool surrounded by a chain-link fence next to the parking lot. Samantha walked past the unoccupied, darkened pool, clutching her purse that contained Lenny’s payoff.

Room six. She stood outside it and reminded herself to breathe. But her courage felt shattered, like so many broken shell fragments washed up along the shore. The porch light beside the door had either burned out or been purposely extinguished. If not for the moon overhead and the iridescent, droning orange of the motel signage, she would be in eerie darkness.

Nearly choking on dread, Samantha knocked. As she waited, her fingers roamed inside her purse until she felt the handle of the kitchen knife she’d brought with her from Café Bella. If Lenny tried to take more than the money, if he grabbed her and tried to force her…

Samantha shivered despite the evening’s humidity. Jittery, she knocked again, louder this time.

The muffled blare of a television came from another of the guest rooms. But the one in front of her remained silent. Samantha glanced at her wristwatch, checking the time again. Five minutes past eleven. An eighteen-wheeler pulled into the parking lot, its big tires crunching over gravel. It came to a stop at the far side of the motel. A driver wearing cowboy boots, jeans and a baseball cap climbed down from the cab. The man approached and nodded politely at her as he traveled past, then disappeared inside one of the rooms.

Samantha knocked again on Lenny’s door, this time with the flat of her hand. Her palm smarted with the effort. But again there was no response. What kind of game was he playing?

Weak with pent-up fear and growing frustration, Samantha moved to the window and tried to peer between the slit in the closed curtains. But the room’s interior appeared dark. She sagged onto the white plastic lawn chair next to the air conditioner vent. A thin trail of water leaked from the unit across the grimy concrete stoop, reaching her leather thong sandals. She hadn’t worn the requested stripper heels.

She wondered what to do. Keep waiting? For how long? She squinted at a line of plastic flamingos planted in the motel’s patchy Bermuda grass. They called attention to a sign urging passersby to inquire about weekly rent specials.

Lenny wasn’t home, apparently. Samantha rubbed her hands over her upper arms, confused. Had he forgotten it was his payday?

That didn’t seem possible.

My Review:

The first thing that caught my attention with Before The Storm was the cover. This cover with its dark grey clouds, storm-tossed seas, and lonely looking woman made me want to open the book and find out her story.

I’m so glad I did.

Samantha Marsh has moved to the small coastal town of Rarity Cove in search of a new life. She opens a specialty bake shop and slowly integrates into the community. Then she meets a handsome man at the country fair with his sweet little girl who hasn’t spoken since her mother died in a horrible car accident. Samantha never had a good experience with men so she’s surprised by her instant connection to Mark St. Clair.

Slowly a bond forms between the two of them.

When trouble shows up from Samantha’s past she tries to distance herself from Mark and his daughter before they get hurt.

Is it too late?

This story is written with plenty of emotional highs and lows guaranteed to keep the reader turning pages.

My Review:

There’s just something about a Jill Shalvis book. She has a knack for creating quirky characters we find impossible not to fall in love with.

Her heroes are alpha men who know what they want and don’t have any problem going after it, that is until they butt up with the funny, sexy, sassy women they can’t control.

Then the fun begins 🙂

One of the best at writing male points of view, Jill creates heroes we as readers can’t help but fall for.

Her wonderful use of dialogue makes me laugh and wrenches my heart at the same time.

Favorite lines:

“Was just going to call you,” the sheriff said before Parker could speak. “She’s her own woman,” Parker said. “She can go out with whoever she wants.” There. He’d said it. Now he just had to believe it. There was a long pause from Kel. Hell. “That’s not why you were going to call me,” Parker said, rubbing the sudden ache between his eyeballs. “Nope. But if we’re talking about Zoe, hell yeah, she’s her own woman. Did you really think I was calling you to ask permission to date her? And more importantly, why would

I call you to ask permission to date her?” “No reason.”

I’ve long been a fan of Kelly Hunter’s work. One of my favorite books of hers is, With This Fling, about a ‘temporary fiance.’

Kelly has a talent with characterization and effortlessly draws the reader into the complex world of relationships. I enjoy her writing style and the fact that she lights up the paper with the chemistry between her hero/heroine.

Dawn and Finnbar shouldn’t work together, they’re both very different and each have their own set of issues. But from the moment Finn admits his feelings to Dawn and wants more from their relationship, I was hooked.

A very good read 🙂

Exciting Read

I’ve long been a fan of the romantic suspense genre and Stanalei Fletcher does not let me down with Proving Ground.
The opening scene sets the stage for a fast-paced novel filled with a variety of pitfalls that keeps the H/H on the run and the reader on the edge of their seats.
The author does a credible job of bringing the characters to life on the page and provides a sensational backdrop for the suspense.
I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a strong heroine and a hero to swoon over.

And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .

*** My Review***

I’ve long been a fan of Jill Shalvis and her books are on my auto-buy list, so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed this read. Jill has a knack for making the reader connect with her characters in a very real way. Her H/H are hunky and of course gorgeous, but they also have faults which gives the reader empathy and makes you root for their HEA.

I Love, Love Aidan and his family, the Kincaids. They’re a mish-mash group of siblings brought together because of his father’s immoral behavior. Their trust in each other took a while to happen and they still face many issues, but the family dynamics are what makes this book memorable for me. The interplay between the brothers brought smiles and even tears at times.

Lilly fled Cedar Ridge years ago after a horrible tragedy, leaving behind an almost romance with the love of her life. Now that she’s returned, she has to overcome her feelings of guilt in order to give the sexy rescue worker another chance.

Slots are limited, and members will be chosen at random and required to email me before the deadline to let me know your reviews are up. Doing so will ensure you’ll be automatically offered an early copy of my next book, The Sheriff Meets his Match (A Wounded Hearts Novella), assuming we continue running the review team.
Apologies to international readers, but a print option will not be available for you. However, electronic option will be offered!
Enter here for a chance to be on the Review Team.
Selected members will be announced on June 29th via email, so enter quickly!

Good Luck,

Jacquie Biggar

Hardheaded Brunette

From acclaimed author Diane Bator, comes a page turning mystery that will leave you guessing until the end!

Gilda Wright’s life seems to finally be on track. Her love life is looking up with her hot boss, Mick, and she’s planning and promoting a grand opening extravaganza for his new martial arts school. But things go awry when their special guest referee for the opening’s exhibition match is found dead on the beach. To make matters worse, the school’s sexy new weapons instructor, Kane Garrick, stands accused of his murder. In spite of her promise to Mick and nearly everyone else in town to not get involved, Gilda—a.k.a. the Brunette Sherlock—wades into danger one more time. The only question is, can Gilda catch a killer before the killer catches up to her?

~ Gemma Halliday, New York Times bestselling author

Writer, editor, painter, martial artist, and avid hiker. I relocated from Alberta to Ontario and settled into a routine of work, writing, and laundry. Since April 2007 when I joined the Headwaters Writers’ Guild, I’ve rekindled my passion for the written word attending workshops, writing assorted short stories, murder mysteries, YA novellas, and whatever pops into my head.
With several books already written, it’s time to get my name out to the world – with the help of my wonderful agent, Dawn Dowdle and my two fabulous publishers Books We Love Ltd and Gemma Halliday Publishing!

This is my first time reading Diane’s novels, but not the last. It took me a bit to get used to the wide variety of characters laced throughout the story, but as they took shape in my mind I began to thoroughly enjoy the interplay. These are all people with a history and it shines through in Diane’s work.

Fresh turns of phrase made this book a true pleasure to read. The who-done-it aspect is well thought out and kept me guessing until the very end.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
