Mixing it Up with Mortals by Judi Lynn #PNR #BookReview @judipost

Is a rogue supernatural attacking mortals? Raven and Hester have to find him before too many bodies pile up.

Raven Black, fire demon and Muddy River’s enforcer, wants to surprise his new mate, Hester Wand. Between his job and her duties as teacher and leader of Muddy River’s coven, they rarely can find private time, so he buys a property with three small lakes and a get-sway cottage. Log cabins sit at the far end of the first lake for the rare times they want to invite friends to join them. He’s sure Hester’s going to love their get-away, but his fun surprise goes sour when they find two dead bodies in one of the cabins. The human man and woman have been sucked dry, instantly mummified. Sheriff Brown, a wolf shifter, is investigating more dead bodies, killed in a similar fashion. When he joins Raven and Hester to find the killer, they discover a trail of bodies. Is someone stalking mortals for an unknown vendetta?

Biography

USA Today Best-selling author for The Body in the Attic.
When I started self-publishing, I wrote urban fantasy as Judith Post. Then my wonderful agent, Lauren Abramo, suggested I try to find a publisher by writing romance, and she was right. I sold my Mill Pond romances to Kensington’s Lyrical Press. After six romances, my equally wonderful editor, John Scognamiglio, asked if I’d like to try to write a mystery. Ironic, because I started writing–forever ago–by writing mystery short stories and selling them. I decided to write about a fixer-upper because my husband and I bought a 1920s small bungalow when we got married, and it needed lots of work. We’re still working on it. And cooking crept into the stories because I LOVE to cook and have friends over to eat supper with us. A lot of my passions have ended up in my books:)

My Review

When Muddy River’s enforcer, Raven Black, takes his new girlfriend to a cabin in the woods, he’s expecting romance not murder.

Hester loves her demon, but an incubus is disrupting their peaceful getaway and the two must team up with shifter, and half mortal, Sheriff Brown to hunt the creature down before more mortals die.

This is my first Judi Lynn book, I thoroughly enjoyed her world-building creativity and the twists and turns in this fast-moving storyline.

If you like your demons hot, your witches strong and… well, magical 🙂 then I urge you to give the Raven & Hester series a try!

4 lovely kisses for Mixing it Up with Mortals- a supernatural cozy fun mystery!

The storm was only the beginning…

Mackenzie Scott is trapped in another realm, but that’s the least of her problems. Magic runs through her veins, and even now she can feel herself changing. She’s managed to help her brother, but in exchange, she’s turning into one of them. Worse, Mackenzie’s not just a monster. She’s their queen.

Hunter had one job: open the gateway between worlds to keep his realm alive. He hadn’t counted on betrayal. He hadn’t counted on being saved by a human girl. And he’d never guessed he couldn’t trust his own king. Now he’s trapped in a world to which he can never truly belong.

Separated by realms, Mackenzie and Hunter must save the other’s world. But the divide isn’t the only thing working against them. Beasts and men fight a dangerous battle that pits Hunter and Mackenzie against those they’re trying to protect.

And the clock is ticking.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Hannah was standing by the window, staring out into a world so changed from anything she’d ever known. The sky was there, still and blue, the only constant among the tumult of the last twenty-seven days. It was cerulean, like a painting, bright and promising, all the things she remembered it being as a child. She’d never been one for crayons, but that sky would have made it onto her parents’ fridge.

Hannah’s mother was in the military. Her father. Two of her uncles. Crayon-aged Hannah wouldn’t have touched a gun.

A black-winged bird slammed into the glass inches from Hannah’s face, the noise making her fingers tighten around the stock of her M4. She wanted to turn away from the window, from the disingenuousness of that promising sky, and cross the darkened room. But Hannah was on watch. She straightened, eyes narrowed against the light of a hidden sun, and another bird smacked into the glass with a dull thud.

Thud. Thud, thud, thud.

“Captain,” Hannah called over her shoulder. “Captain!”

She walked backward, pacing slowly, heel-first. There was debris scattered over this floor, over every floor in every standing structure since the monsters had come. The monsters they’d chased to the gateway. The monsters that weren’t supposed to come back.

“I shouldn’t have to tell you this isn’t a fairy story…”

After her parents’ car crash ten years before, Amie Wentworth trusts books more than people. She may be a writer, but she believes in reality over fiction. She ignores the unexplained mysteries surrounding her, never mind the dreams of a past life, or the fact she can fry technology with a touch. Not even a timely invitation from her long-lost uncle in England gives Amie incentive for anything other than ire.

Until she is stabbed in an alley and brought back to life by a handsome stranger. Soon Amie is dragged into the very sort of tale she is used to selling. To make matters worse, the man who saved her life keeps turning up and her would-be-murderer is still at large.

After crossing the Atlantic to her father’s homeland, she discovers a world beyond imagining. Silver Hollow is a place of ancient traditions and supernatural dangers, where everything is the opposite of what it seems and few escape sane. Faced with an impossible choice, Amie is forced to confront a deadly family legacy while remembering a life she soon wishes to forget.

Crafting Legends

To quote one of my favorite movies and actors, “One does not simply walk into Mordor.”

In the same vein, you don’t simply create a fantasy story without crafting its legends. This is best illustrated through epic fantasy novels like Game of Thrones. Throughout the ongoing series you are drawn deeper into the stories behind the stories. There is legend layered behind hundreds of years of history. Even contemporary fantasy like Harry Potter is full of the hidden history of this magical world. Not every author discovers all the hidden back stories right away of course. Sometimes you discover the legends in the process of exploring your characters. George R.R. Martin, for example, compares his writing method to a garden.

Guest Post - It's All About the Romance Picture

Writing Silver Hollow was like The Secret Garden. I won’t say it was dead, exactly, but there was a lot of weeding to be done. Gardening aside, my love of fairy tales and epic fantasy shines brightly in this new revised edition.

I’ve always been drawn to movies and books about the “truth” behind legends. As Silver Hollow is a modern adult fairy tale, I wanted to do the same for y’all. While Silver Hollow centers around some heavy Arthurian elements, there are also many other myths peppered throughout, from Tristan and Isolde, to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I tried weaving these tales together in fresh and unpredictable ways. Purists, you have been warned. For the rest of you who love refurbished fairy tales as much as I do, this is the book for you!

I hope y’all continue to follow along on our whirlwind tour with these lovely bloggers. See you at the next stop and happy reading!

Excerpt:

“They’re here,” Lex said with a growl as he, Desiree, Zach, and Lydia crept along the dark corridors of Khan’s castle. The smell of sulfur and dirt tingled his nose. Even though Lex had a home in the Underworld, he didn’t spend much time there. Not since Khan had taken over, anyway. “The hounds are separated and masked with a spell.”

His keen sense of dark magic came from his Death Demon half and his connection to Hecate—Goddess of Witchcraft. Khan may believe he’d hidden Teddy-Bear, but not from everyone. The fool bastard.

Lex fisted his hands. It took every fiber of his being to hold onto his control. The hounds couldn’t survive spit apart for much longer. As Siamese twins, their magic and souls were linked. They were growing weaker by the moment.

Reaching out to mind link with the hounds, he found Teddy first in a room a few feet away. Then he heard the faint thump, thump of the hellhound’s heartbeat.

“He’s alive. Thank the goddess.” We’re coming, buddy.

A low growl from Lydia at his back told him she wasn’t pleased with the hounds being apart. “Do you know where they are?”

With a short nod, he advanced down a hallway in quick strides. He uncurled his magic, letting it flow wildly within and waited for an attack. Lydia, Zach, and Desiree followed, having to fall into a light jog to keep up with him.

“Things are too quiet.” Zach spoke in a hushed tone; concern and fear of what was ahead of them drifted from him. Dark, elfin magic rose within the male and reached out to Lex’s senses.

Yeah, things were too quiet.

Stopping a few feet down the hall, Lex stopped and faced them. He flicked a hard stare to the door they had stopped a few feet from. Cold, lethal power rose in his veins. The hounds were his family—what little he had left—and he’d be damned if Khan got away with harming them. “Teddy is in there. Zach and Lydia, you get him. Desiree and I will get Bear. We’ll meet at the Divinity House.”

The reason for not busting down the door and freeing Teddy was that Bear’s heartbeat sounded stronger. Teddy would need Lydia’s healing touch. Lex figured it’d be quicker to rush down the hall and collect Bear while Lydia healed Teddy.

When they reached the door, Lex didn’t bother to check the lock. He just plowed through the thick wood, tearing the thing off its hinges. The room was empty except for a large cage in the center with Bear standing in it, teeth bared.

The hound met Lex’s gaze and snarled, “The place is going to blow.”

Love is Magical by Lia Davis

The heroine’s heart beats a little faster as the hero enters the room. The feeling intensifies when he prowls towards her, his gaze locked with hers. The air grows thick and everything around them disappears. Than all plans of their ten year anniversary are forgotten and they slip away from their guest for “private” time.

Magic of love is that spark, the instant attraction between a couple. It draws them together. Sometimes the magic is there from the moment they meet. Sometimes it takes time to make an appearance. The hero and heroine will mostly likely deny that it’s even there until it grows to the point of intense need that seems to never die down.

It is why I love romance so much. I love the journey the couple goes through, the conflict and struggle to be together. And then the happily ever after. It a chance to show readers love can be magical.

The Cursed Trilogy by Amy Braun #UrbanFantasy #Suspense #mgtab @amybraunauthor

Cursed Trilogy
Amy Braun
Publication date: November 6th 2016
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

An urban fantasy series for fans of the “Supernatural” TV show, CURSED tells the story of Constance Ramirez, a hardened young woman determined to protect her adopted sister, Dro, from the bloodthirsty demons hunting her– and from Dro’s own deadly powers. As the sisters cross paths with demon slayers, psychics, and angels, they become tangled in a dangerous web that brings Constance’s past back to haunt her. Protecting her sister and her new allies will test Constance in ways she never imagined– though she may be too human to survive it.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Smashwords

Q&A: Amy Braun and Demon’s Daughter

Q: How did you come up with the idea?

A: Like most of my inspirations, it just came to me one day. “What would I do if I had an adopted sister who wasn’t human?” While I am an older sister of a very human brother, I admit that it was fun to put myself in another mindset. Given that I’m a fan of strong family-dynamic fiction, whether it’s from the Supernatural television series or the Cal Leandros and The Chimera series’ by Rob Thurman, I wanted to write a story about the powerful bonds of family– two people who would literally die for each other. I also wanted to delve deeper into the mysteries of angel and demonology. The more I learned about them, their types and hierarchies, I knew they were the perfect creatures for my story. I think they presented some intense challenges for Constance and Dro, and writing about them was as informative as it was exciting.

Q: What was the biggest challenge writing Demon’s Daughter?

A: The research. While I love demons and angels, I’m not religious. I know that fiction writing, especially urban fantasy, allows you to bend the rules, but I wanted there to be some truth to what I was writing. Nothing is more embarrassing than writing about a topic you’re not an expert in. So I spent countless hours online, checking and re-checking my facts until whatever concept I was reading about made sense and wasn’t going to offend anyone. I think I succeeded. Other challenges involved finding information on Mexican drug cartels (so it’s a good thing I have a strong stomach) and locations/supernatural history in Texas. It’s tricky to write about a place you’ve never been to, so I spent a lot of my time looking at GoogleMaps and Google Images to make sure I wasn’t making random buildings out of thin air.

Q: Why did you choose to make the main character a criminal?

A: At first, it was because I wanted someone strong. No matter what you may say about them, you don’t get to be a high ranking member of a drug cartel without being ruthless and tough. But as I built Constance and learned more about her, I realized that I didn’t just want her to be tough and skilled at fighting. I wanted her to be damaged. I wanted a character that would develop PTSD from the things she saw and endured. I wanted her to showcase strength, when in reality she’s terrified at every turn. Constance has had a rough life, but she made her choices to protect the person she loves above everything else. She was at the end of her rope, desperate, and did the only thing she knew would work. How she deals with the guilt weighing on her conscience as her past catches up with her will be a key element in the future books, but I wanted readers to get a taste of her internal struggle before things really start hitting the fan.

Q: Who is your favorite character and why?

A: Constance, of course. I love books with strong female leads who know how to help themselves, and one of the highlights of writing Demon’s Daughter was putting Constance in situations where she had no one to help her. Constance is human, but she fights like a machine. She refuses to back down to anyone, is stubborn and angry, and viciously loyal to those who earn it. At the same time, she’s a compressed bottle of pain and fear. It takes a lot of hard work to earn her trust, though she makes it worth the effort. As much as I love Constance, Dro, and the rest of the characters, my second favorite is Sephiel. His backstory is heartbreaking, and like Constance, his loyalty is unwavering. As soon as I started writing him, I kind of fell in love with him. I think readers will really enjoy reading about the mysterious angel, and I hope there’s a lot of feedback about him as a character.

Q: What can we expect from the sequel?

A: Insanity, if I’m being honest. The sequel, titled Dark Divinity and scheduled for a December 2015 release, runs at the same full throttle speed as its predecessor. I delved a little more into the angels, and Constance’s past plays a vital role. It’s definitely darker than Demon’s Daughter, and my beta reader has told me that there are some heartbreaking moments in the sequel. There will be new demons and old enemies, and choices that will have devastating consequences. If readers enjoy Demon’s Daughter, they will love Dark Divinity.

Sara’s heist takes a turn for the trickier as the smoky-eyed specter from her past, Detective Brody Rooks, is assigned to investigate a break-in at the gold show, forcing her to confront the one man in Vegas she can’t bluff. Even worse, just as she finally gets her hands on the goods, the game changes anew. The resulting chase leads her across the world to an ancient Egyptian temple filled with secrets, deception… and hints about her own abilities that could change everything. Desperate for answers, Sara is forced to turn to the one person she knows will lie, cheat, manipulate and steal to get whatever he craves. Only now, it seems, the Magician wants her.

Sometimes, when the deck is stacked against you… you’ve got to play the Wilde Card.

Excerpt Wilde Card:

Chapter One

I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t even blink. Six foot two of hard-bodied ex–Special Forces operative was snugged up against my backside, and I was totally falling for him.

For about eight thousand more feet.

My helmet crackled. “You’re doing great.”

“Unghflun.” Worse, we were still spinning. They’d told me the spinning would stop, but it didn’t feel like it was stopping. It felt like we were dying. And of all the ways to die, French-kissing a cliff at a hundred miles per hour had not made my short list. It gave a whole new meaning to the phrase “terminal” velocity.

“Right on target.”

Something shuddered above us, and I shifted from sprawl to nearly vertical in a sudden blur. I squinted up past the man carabinered to me in not nearly enough places, to see that our parachute had deployed.

That would be the “Low Opening” portion of this joyride into the Siberian mountain range surrounding Lake Baikal. The “High Altitude” section had been covered by our plunging six-mile drop from a souped-up jet now well on its way to Beijing.

Getting off this rock without alerting the local military would be its own special kind of crazy, but I was down for that. Pretty much any kind of crazy that got me away from Vegas and the Arcana Council for a few days worked for me.

“Drop point,” echoed in my ear.

Beside us, two other barely discernible shadows rocketed through the predawn gloom. We were aiming for a strip of gravel tucked between two sheer cliffs where, according to my client, X marked the spot for the ultimate Mongolian treasure: the crown of Genghis Khan. Rumored to give its wearer the Khan’s magical mojo for protection, abundance, and crazy long life.

Then again, said crown was apparently resting on the head of a dead guy right now. So there was that.

Another crackle in my helmet. “Bend your knees.”

“If I had a dollar…”

My guide’s laughter carried through our final several hundred feet of descent, and suddenly we were on the ground, a tumble of arms, legs, and high-tech padding. With impressive military precision, mission leader Zander “Call me Zee” James broke up with me without remorse, thrusting me aside. I lurched drunkenly to my knees as he slowed his run then turned to his parachute and punched it into submission.

The other men landed beside us, neatly outrunning their chutes, and I ducked to avoid a fine spray of rocks stirred up by the movement. Zee stripped off his HALO suit, oxygen mask and gear like he was shimmying out of swim trunks, and shoved them into a we-were-never-here-sized nylon bagel for easy transport out. He flapped his hand at me for mine and I shoved them at him in a big ball. “Report?” he snapped.

Zee’s right-hand man squinted down at a device attached to his wrist. “No heat signatures,” he said, aiming the thing at the rock wall. “Wall” was being kind. The cliff face surged up as if an angry god had punched through the earth’s crust, all crags and fissures and sharp edges. “Seismic activity currently stable.”

As if to counter his words, another crackle of falling rocks sounded high above us. “Right.” Zee squinted up. “At dawn, this place’ll light up like the surface of the sun. We don’t want to be here for that. We get in, we get out, we get gone.” His gaze shifted to me. “Ready?”

I nodded, then tugged down the zipper of my tech suit to fetch my own tools of the trade, my trusty pack of Tarot cards.

With the deck as my compass, I could find about anything—for a price. As it happened, a hundred G was a heck of a price. That kind of money translated to at least three more Connecteds hidden away from the dark practitioners who wanted to use them for spare parts. Not enough to save them all, no. But enough to count. I had to believe that.

“Sometime today, princess.”

Double-tasking one set of fingers to offer Zee my opinion of his people management skills, I used the other to pull a scatter of cards out of the deck.

Here we go.

I’m absolutely honored to have Jenn as my guest today. Her work is new to me, but after reading this excerpt that’s going to change!

Good morning, Jacquie! And thank you for hosting me today on the Wilde Card blitz! Your questions make the perfect Top Ten of Author Fun Facts. 🙂

  1. I know you’re a writer, what’s your favorite thing to write?

I write Urban Fantasy, New Adult Contemporary Romance and Young Adult Historical Romance – three very different genres! Right now, my favorite is Urban Fantasy. I love the mix of magic and contemporary sensibilities, along with writing a heroine who evolves with each book.

  1. Do you like surprises? Tell us about the last one you remember.

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of surprises, though I try to roll with the good and the bad. I won’t bore you with a “bad” surprise, but a good one recently was the reader response to GETTING WILDE, the first full-length book in my Immortal Vegas series. I put it out there not sure if anyone would find it… and they did! Intriguingly it’s found a fair amount of readers in the UK, which I never ever expected.

On a non-writing note, another recent surprise was when a friend sent me flowers out of the blue. Of course, being an author, I was convinced that the strange men at my door and the unmarked white-paneled van parked in front of my house could only mean one thing: I’d been discovered by my direst enemies. Needless to say, I didn’t open the door, but I did check the flowers they left behind for a bomb. Because I’m an author like that. 🙂

  1. How old were you when you started writing?

I’d say my first real “story” was when I was 12 or 13, but I wrote shorter pieces before that. They were horrible, but I wrote them!

  1. Do you love writing or hate it, and why.

I love it. I’ve made my living as a writer (I am a freelance copywriter and used to be in marketing communications back when I worked corporate) for my entire adult life, and writing fiction helps me leverage a basic skill (writing) and apply it to a whole new world of learning and exploration to me (storytelling).

  1. What would be your dream job?

Being able to write full time as an author—I’m close! But I’m still not able to take the full leap. Perhaps this is the year that will change, fingers crossed!

  1. What was your favorite childhood story?

Going all the way back to when I was very small, the story I WONDER WHAT’S UNDER by Doris Herold Lund… it’s the tale of a little boy wondering what might be under his bed. 🙂 Gosh, I haven’t thought about that in years!

  1. Where in the world do you consider home?

Right now I live in Ohio, and I’ve lived in the state full-time for many years. I don’t consider it home, though… I am happiest when I’m somewhere with a lot of water nearby, like the ocean, particularly in a lush setting where there are a lot of trees as well. That said, I have enjoyed my stay in Ohio tremendously and have made many friends!

  1. What is your favorite book, favorite movie?

I’d say my favorite book is actually the Narnia series by CS Lewis or the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. Both of them had a huge impact on me when I read them many years ago. Favorite movie… oof. That’s hard! The Lord of the Rings movies probably would win for sheer visual magnificence and storytelling. But if I had to pick a movie that I’d watch over and over again, I’ll go with the romantic comedy WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, with Sandra Bullock. For some reason, that’s my go-to when I’m feeling blue.

  1. What is your greatest pleasure in life?

Ha! The first thing that came to mind was “sleeping”… you can tell I’m on deadline! But when I’m well-rested, I think it would be walking through a natural setting (like on a beautiful beach at the edge of the ocean) with a good friend. Experiencing the awesomeness of nature AND the connection of a loved friend is a magical thing.

  1. Name your favourite food.

MMMMMMmmmmmm. it would be impossible to pick just one! So I’ll go with my favorite dessert, which is a very basic chocolate cake called “Texas Sheet Cake.” Here’s a recipe. It’s simple but delicious, and perfect for snacking! Yum, now I’m hungry! 🙂

Jacquie, I’ve enjoyed your questions so much—thank you and I hope you have a wonderful week!

And I very much enjoyed meeting you, Jenn. Your sense of humor shines through your writing 🙂
