The Truth About Lilly

by Christy McKee

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Disgraced…
Lilly Talbot never imagined she would be starting her life over again. Losing her good name for something she didn’t do has driven her to move into an old lake house she inherited in Vermont. Upon arrival, she is shocked. Half the roof is about to slide into Lake Champlain. Even more upsetting, the man who can fix it will only agree if she trades him room and board for his labor. What will the good people of Haley think of her sharing a house with the handsome bachelor?
A man with a past…
Connor “Mac” McQueen, once one of the infamous Whiz Kids of Wall Street, spent three years in prison for insider trading. Only one thing sustained him during his time inside, the thought of owning Point Cottage, a home he’d fallen in love with years ago. He plans to turn the house into a stunning showcase for his eco-friendly home construction business.
Secrets and lies…
Now someone’s trying to drive Lilly from her home. Is it someone from her past? Mac has secrets of his own– that could ruin lives if revealed. But if Lilly and Mac are to have a future together they must first delve into the past for answers and accept some difficult truths about each other. Only then, will they know if true love is in their hearts.
EXCERPT (Exlusive Excerpt):
At the hospital, the nurse had given her the equivalent of a sponge bath so she could skip a shower tonight. Still, clean didn’t mean she looked close to presentable. It took a minute for her to work up the nerve to look at her reflection in the mirror.
“Oh my God.” Her eyes were raccoon like, ringed with smeared black mascara. Her hair looked like some punk rocker on steroids, and she had about a dozen small cuts all over her face, which from a distance, looked oddly like chicken pox. To think this was how she looked when she’d arrived at the hospital. What would people think of her?  Hey, have you seen the new woman in town? The bag lady from Georgia?
Always wanting to look her best, Lilly never went out of the house without make up.  And now, she’d asked Mac to spend the night in her bed, looking like this? She nudged the bathroom light off and shuffled into the bedroom as Mac walked in fresh from the shower and wearing—much to her relief—sweatpants and a white t-shirt. So much for her fantasy that his big, sexy self slept in the raw.
He put her water glass, with a straw, and the pain pills Dr. Patterson prescribed, on the night stand then peeled back the sheet and blanket for her. She sat down. Mac unscrewed the child proof top, tapped two pills into his palm and brought them level with Lilly’s mouth. She licked them right off his palm, which gave her a racy little shiver, and washed them down while Mac held the glass for her.
“Thanks.” Then she froze in horror because she remembered how terrible she looked. “Please don’t look at me.” She put her pancake hands in front of her face. “I am not this person.”
Mac returned the glass to the nightstand, got up and disappeared into her bathroom. She could hear him pawing around in her cabinets and cosmetics drawer. He reappeared with makeup wipes and a hairbrush. Then this macho, bear of a man, knelt in front of her and gently wiped away her raccoon eyes. He scooted around behind her and carefully brushed the tangles from her hair. The man was a saint. He might not look like one on the outside, but underneath he was as soft as a marshmallow.
“That feels so good.” Lilly closed her eyes and gloried in Mac’s ministrations. Having her hair brushed was a childhood pleasure she’d long since forgotten. She had to fight her impulse to fall back into Mac’s big warm body. What was she thinking? She’d known this man only a few days. Besides, in his eyes she was a married woman.
“Will you set your phone’s alarm to go off at one hour intervals?”
She could tell he was about to resist, but for some reason he didn’t. “Fine.” He pulled his cell from his pocket and did as she asked.
“Thank you Mac.” She gave him a quick, friendly, but not too friendly, kiss on the cheek. “You’re a very sweet man.”
He surprised her with a frown and a shake of the head. “I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet that could call me that and get away with it but you.” He stood up and pulled the covers down so she could scoot all the way into bed. When she was stretched out, he carefully pulled the covers up to her chin and folded the sheet over the edge of the blanket, just like her mother used to do when she was a little. He was pretty good at the whole tucking in thing.
“Mac, do you have any children?”
He turned off the light. “Just you.” The mattress sagged when he climbed into bed. “Good night, Lilly.”
