GENRE: Mystery/Suspense

BLURB:

Fourteen years ago, high school track star Sydney Adams was gunned down in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. The investigation yielded useless clues, and the case went cold. But homicide detective Augustus Knox never gave up on finding Sydney’s killer. Now, retired from the police force and with only months to live, he enlists the help of private investigator Jocelyn Rush to clear the case once and for all.

Armed with little more than a theory as to who murdered Sydney, Jocelyn tries to lure a killer into the open. But unraveling the mystery means facing off against a cunning psychopath whose ruthlessness knows no bounds. When more bodies start to pile up, Jocelyn has to decide just how far she’s willing to go to catch a cold-blooded killer.

Excerpt:

She stumbled, crying out as her left foot tangled with a rogue tree root poking up through a crack in the concrete. Her hands shot out, prepared to break her fall, but her legs stuttered, almost of their own volition, finding purchase. She stopped, leaning against the offending tree. Her chest heaved. Sweat ran down her forehead and into her eyes, irritating them. Laughter erupted from her diaphragm. How many times had she run this path? Hundreds. Sprained ankle by way of tree root was a rookie move. This was exactly the problem. This distraction.

Pop.

It sounded like a firecracker and registered as a searing, stabbing pain in the back of her right thigh. Like a hot poker. Before she could react, another pop sounded, this one closer. Then two more. She suddenly tasted dirt in her mouth, and her temple was resting on that damn tree root before she could even begin to process what was happening to her. Her legs wouldn’t work. Panic, hot and frenzied, closed in on her. What was happening?

“Help,” she said, but her voice came out small and squeaky. She thought she heard footsteps approaching from behind. Sydney willed her legs to move, to stand, to scramble, to run. She reached forward with her right arm, feeling for the base of the tree. She had to get up. As her surroundings began to fade to an inky, charcoal blackness, she felt a tug on her lower body.

“Please,” she croaked.

Then the darkness swallowed her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m so happy to be able to share this award winning author on the blog today, thanks Lisa!
I wanted to get to know a bit more about her and her writing process and this is what she said:
What do you write?
Crime thrillers/mysteries
What genre do you favor?
Crime fiction
When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was in the fourth and fifth grade I was convinced that I wanted to be an astronaut. But I spent all my time writing poems and stories about being an astronaut, and I realized that writing was my true passion.
What do you think is the best way to publish these days?
I think that depends on the author. There are pros and cons to both traditional publishing and indie publishing. I’m not sure that one is better than the other. I’ve done both and there were several wonderful things about each way. There are also drawbacks to each one. It also depends on where you are in your career and what you hope to get out of publication.
What are your favorite genres to read? Why?
My favorite genre is crime fiction/mystery/suspense. That’s just what interests me the most, but I will try anything. I’ve read some romance, science fiction, and young adult novels that I’ve really loved. I lean heavily toward crime fiction but in my opinion, if a well-told story really speaks to you, it doesn’t matter what genre it comes from.
Do your characters talk to you?
No, it’s more like I’m invisible, just standing in the room with them and observing them, listening to their conversations.
How do you approach starting a new book?
I usually start with a really compelling scene, and then I build the rest of the book around that.
What is your writing process?
I’ll write a scene or a chapter. If it feels good and flows well, I will try to build a story around that scene. I’ll plot a little, write a little, plot a little, write a little.
What are the best writing books or blogs you’ve ever read?
Stephen King’s On Writing is the best book on writing I’ve ever read. I also like books by Heather Sellers about writing, especially Chapter After Chapter.
What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?
I love to read! Mostly I enjoy hanging out with my daughter and my husband.
What was your best date ever?
Any time I get to have a date night with my husband, it’s my new favorite date. We really enjoy being with each other so it doesn’t matter what we do. It’s usually dinner and a movie. On our very first date, we went to dinner and both ordered the same thing. Probably the best date we ever had was once when we drove down to the beach. We ate this amazing dinner at a seafood restaurant, walked on the beach and the boardwalk hand-in-hand and just talked. It sounds so plain but when you’re with the right person, the most mundane things are exciting.
Navy SEAL or cowboy?
Navy SEAL all the way! My dad was a SEAL. I admire people who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect others. Also SEALS take toughness to a whole new level.
Chocolate or chips?
Tough one but I’m leaning more toward chocolate.
If you could have a superpower what would it be? Why?
I’d love to be invisible! Front row seats at all your favorite concerts—no one would even know you were there!
Fancy restaurant or picnic?
Restaurant
Beer or wine?
Wine
Favorite author?
Karin Slaughter. I also like Nancy S. Thompson, Jennifer Hillier and Dennis Lehane
Smooth or hairy?
I like a little bit of hair but not a ton of hair. Somewhere in between!
