EXCERPT:

ย

The sticky sensation of Davidโ€™s blood coated Marissaโ€™s hands. This wasnโ€™t supposed to happen. Sheโ€™d been ready to tell him she couldnโ€™t marry him. Maybe they could have worked through their problems, or maybe they could have parted as friends, but now he was dead. Anger and preoccupation would no longer alienate them. The easy humor and quick laugh that had been absent in recent weeks would never return.

Surrounded by blood, she glanced at one wall of the kitchen. Her stomach roiled as she studied the brain matter splattered on the wall like abstract art. The wall had once been tan, but was now stained a ghastly shade of red.

Marissa blinked several times, hoping to erase the sick scene, but the reality remained. David was dead.

The last few weeks sheโ€™d been embroiled in romantic, tranquil colors. Soft peach hued roses. Elegant gray candles. Delicate swirls of ruffled silver icing on a too-pretty-to-eat wedding cake. A snowy white wedding dress.

Now her world was blood red.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

As a lifelong reader of an eclectic pool of books from mystery/thrillers, science fiction, contemporary romance, and the classics, Lisa Caviness has never been without a book on the nightstand and a long to be read list. Like many writers, she started crafting stories as a child. However as an adult, creativity took a back seat to her career in pharmaceutical and medical device research. In 2013, Lisa decided to get serious about writing and joined Romance Writers of America (Crossroads Romance Writers, Indiana RWA, and Kiss of Death Chapters) and later Sisters in Crime (Speed City Chapter). The education she has received, proved invaluable but more importantly the support from fellow writers has enriched her in thrilling and unexpected ways. Lisa writes romantic suspense.

What do you think is the best way to publish these days?

I love the process of self-publishing and running my own business. What a great sense of independence! Making decisions from deciding what to write, when to publish, which editors and cover designers to use, and how to market puts me as the author and publisher in the driverโ€™s seat for every aspect of publishing.

However, I also appreciate the benefits from being traditionally published. Validation of my writing with a contract is attractive so hybrid publishing is my ultimate goal.
What are your favorite genres to read? Why?

My favorite genres to read are romantic suspense, thrillers, and mysteries. I enjoy the twists, turns, and surprises of these types of books. As a young girl I devoured Nancy Drew books and relished trying to decipher who the culprits were. When I got older I enjoyed the splash of romance mixed with a good mystery.
Do your characters talk to you?

My characters definitely talk to me. Many times when Iโ€™m not focused on a character Iโ€™ll get a nudge then an idea pops into my head. Recently, I saw a young girl with pink hair. The young girl in the book Iโ€™m currently writing poked me. She told me she must have purple hair. Lightbulb moment! Purple hair for this character definitely works.
How do you approach starting a new book?

I always approach a new book with a general plot or a couple of sentences presenting the basic story. Before I do anything I have to create names and a brief history for my hero and heroine. I feel like I canโ€™t โ€œseeโ€ their story until I actually โ€œseeโ€ a little bit of my main characters.
What is your writing process?

I am a fairly detailed plotter. When I start a new project I also buy a new notebook because I do most of my plotting on paper before moving it all to my laptop. Although I map out a detailed plot, Iโ€™m not so strict that my characters and the story canโ€™t take off in new directions. Those surprises are sometimes what makes the project exciting and unique. I create comprehensive character maps for each of the main characters and more simplified versions for secondary characters. Next, comes an Excel spreadsheet of each chapter and scene, listing the goals of the scene, location, which POV the scene is written from and basic points of the scene. Draft One involves getting the story written. Draft Two is refining the story and characters. When Iโ€™m satisfied, I send it off to beta readers. After I receive their input, I revisit the story producing Draft Three. I will review the story a few more times before sending it off to the editor. Draft Four is completed after review and inclusion of the editorโ€™s comments and suggestions. At this point Iโ€™ll review my story again before sending it to a proofreader. When the proofreaderโ€™s edits are received and incorporated I consider this Draft Five. Iโ€™ll let the story sit for a few days then return and perform a read through, making any tweaks as I go along. I have a tendency to get stuck in this process so I have to set a deadline date. Then, with lots of anxiety and excitement, Iโ€™m ready to publish.
What are the best writing books or blogs youโ€™ve ever read?

I have several good informational and inspiring writing books such as Mastering Suspense, Structure & Plot by Jane K. Cleland, Manuscript Makeover by Elizabeth Lyon, How To Write A Damn Good Novel by James N. Frey, Goal, Motivation & Conflict by Debra Dixon, Letโ€™s Get Digital by David Gaughran, and Take Off Your Pants, Outline Your Books for Faster, Better Writing by Libby Hawker.

I also frequent several writing blogs Some of them are: Kristin Lamb, Terry Odell, The Creative Penn, Better Novel Project, Jane Friedman, Writers Digest, and Writer UnBoxed.
What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?

Aside from reading, I love working out, specifically running, walking, and lifting weights. Pushing myself to reach a new fitness goal not only helps improve my health but also serves as a way to relieve stress. I also enjoy watching movies and traveling (which doesnโ€™t happen nearly enough!).
What was your best date ever?

My best date ever occurred when I attended the Ring Dance at the Air Force Academy. My then boyfriend (now husband) was an Academy cadet. Itโ€™s tradition for the juniors to receive their class rings in a grand fashion with a formal dining out and dance. The event reminded me of military balls Iโ€™d seen in the movies with the male cadets in their dress blues and their dates in formal attire. The evening has been seared into my memory and represents the first of many military balls and dining out events I would attend as an officerโ€™s wife.
Navy SEAL or cowboy?

Navy SEAL! I have nothing against cowboys but as you now know I love military men!
Chocolate or chips?

Although I donโ€™t indulge often, give me chocolate brownies or chocolate chip cookies and Iโ€™m in heaven.
If you could have a superpower what would it be? Why?

Iโ€™d choose the ability to be invisible upon demand. Imagine the places I could go and the things I could see. The ability to be invisible would be a great way to perform research for my stories.
Fancy restaurant or picnic?

In general, Iโ€™d choose a picnic but under the right conditions (I couldnโ€™t enjoy a picnic while sneezing in the middle of field of flowers!).

Beer or wine?

Iโ€™ve never developed a taste for beer so Iโ€™ll take wine.
Favorite author?

I canโ€™t choose just one! Some of my favorites are: Brad Meltzer, Brad Thor, Nora Roberts, Mary Burton, Lisa Jackson, Julie Garwood, Daphne du Maurier, and Richard Paul Evans.
Smooth or hairy?

A little bit of hair is fine.

    1. Hi Mai. I started writing as a young girl. I’ve always enjoyed creating characters and placing them in unique situations. It’s fun to ponder ways to take a character through adversity and see them not only survive but emerge somehow inspired and a better version of themselves.
