From the author of The Darkest Lie comes a compelling, provocative story for fans of I Was Here and Vanishing Girls, about a high school senior straddling two worlds, unsure how she fits in either—and the journey of self-discovery that leads her to surprising truths.

In her small Kansas town, at her predominantly white school, Kanchana doesn’t look like anyone else. But at home, her Thai grandmother chides her for being too westernized. Only through the clothing Kan designs in secret can she find a way to fuse both cultures into something distinctly her own.

When her mother agrees to provide a home for a teenage girl named Shelly, Kan sees a chance to prove herself useful. Making Shelly feel comfortable is easy at first—her new friend is eager to please, embraces the family’s Thai traditions, and clearly looks up to Kan. Perhaps too much. Shelly seems to want everything Kanchana has, even the blond, blue-eyed boy she has a crush on. As Kan’s growing discomfort compels her to investigate Shelly’s past, she’s shocked to find how much it intersects with her own—and just how far Shelly will go to belong…

My Review

Talk about your page-turning thrillers!
Kanchana is a teenager fighting to fit into a world she believes judges her on racial heritage. She meets a boy, Ethan, and becomes smitten with his virile body, then she sees him being kind to a class of kids he’s teaching to dance and she’s hooked.
Her mother brings a stranger to live with them. A girl Kan’s age, who shares the same (or so she thinks) emotional turmoil Kan’s been going through.
They become friends, blood sisters at Shelly’s insistence, and then things get weird.
I don’t want to give the story away, but will say this; if you ever have a friend like Shelly, run the other way!!
So good!
I give Girl on the Verge 5+ lovely kisses

EXCERPT:

“I’m already working my ass off for you.”

“No, your list. For what you want in a woman. Have you graduated to date four yet?”

Irritation skittered across his features. She tried to tamp down her delight. “Not yet.” She waited him out, learning he liked to space out his responses. “I’m seeing her again this Friday,” he added grudgingly.

“Ooh, exciting. Okay, so tell me what floats your boat, Casanova.”

He shuddered. “God, please don’t call me that. Or talk like that.”

“Sorry, I forget you’re a bit high class.”

“No, I just speak proper English.”

  “Stop stalling.”

He looked away but she caught the edge of a grin. He’d be loath to admit it, but she made him laugh. And from what she’d seen, this man desperately needed someone to balance all that seriousness. It must be exhausting.

“Fine. What do you want to know?”

She practically clapped her hands with glee. “The same question I answered. Tell me the traits in your perfect woman.”

His arms flexed as he worked the hammer, and her gaze snagged on the lean, sinewy muscles under gorgeous brown skin. Wood chips and dust clung to his figure but it only added to his attractiveness, giving a sense of ruggedness to his normal poised elegance. Yes, women would definitely seek him out for his appearance alone, but she wondered how many stayed after they got a dose of his attitude. He must be on his best behavior to trick them.

“I don’t know why you’re interested in this,” he muttered.

  “Tit for tat.”

“It’s simple, really. I know exactly what I’m looking for. I’m ready to get married and have a family.”

  “Right away?”

“Yes. My future wife will have a few core qualities that I won’t compromise on. Loyalty, honesty, and dual respect are at the top.”

She cocked her head, studying him. He’d managed to surprise her. “Very thoughtful. Excellent choices.”

“So glad you approve. I need a certain amount of intellectual stimulation, as I’m sure she will, so she cannot be just a pretty face.”

Huh. Maybe she’d been wrong about him. So far, she wholeheartedly agreed with his choices.
  “Can’t argue with those.”

“I don’t need laugh-out-loud funny, but a sense of humor helps get you through hard times.”

  “Agreed.”

“And then she needs to obey, of course.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

“What are you doing here?”

“Picking you up for dinner,” he said.

“It’s only three thirty. I prefer to put at least six hours between meals and I ate lunch at noon.”

“I’m not here to take you now, Emmy. But I’m giving you a heads-up that I’ll be back at five thirty. Don’t drive home.”

“You could have texted me all of this,” I said.

“Yeah. But then I wouldn’t have been able to do this.”

He crossed the space between us in a millisecond and captured my mouth, wrapping his arms around my waist. His lips pressed roughly against mine as his tongue swept my lower lip. Over and over he stroked until my mouth fell open. When his tongue found mine, I melted. Heat erupted throughout my body and my knees gave out.

When I started to sink to the floor, he stopped kissing me but tightened his grip on my waist.

“I’ve got you.” A crooked grin formed on his lips.

I took a moment to steady my legs and stand tall before stepping back a foot. The skin around my mouth was surely pink from the contact with his beard. But at least it would match my flushed cheeks.

“Five thirty,” he said and walked out the door.

Shit.

Thinking clearly was not an option after a Nick kiss but I really needed to pull myself together. I’d spent last night tossing and turning, replaying all the things Nick had told me these last few months.

You’ve always had my heart, Emmy.

We’re it for each other.

I thought about you every day for nine years.

And I thought about what my mother had said. That my heart had already forgiven him and I just needed to get my head straight with that concept.

Sinking into my chair, I let my head fall into my hands. “What am I going to do?”

I tried to picture what our life could be like. Me happy. Nick and I living a normal life. But every time that image popped in my head, it was immediately followed by the vision of me waking up alone to a note that said he was sorry.

Time was ticking away and I needed to make some decisions. My attorney had emailed me while I was in Italy to say he’d have my divorce papers drafted by the end of the month. Nick was not going to stop inserting himself into my life unless I made it clear we were over.

Were we over?

For nine years, I’d thought we were. But so much was different now. He was everything that I remembered. Kind. Affectionate. Intelligent.

And stubborn. Every time I tried to push him away, he just pushed back harder. But honestly, I really hadn’t put up much of a fight against his advances.

“Ten seconds ago, you let him stick his tongue down your throat with no fight at all, Emmeline,” I mumbled into my hands.

Forbidden Promises Excerpt

“I won’t hurt you, Sloan. I promise.”

There was no logical reason for her to trust him, but he’d been careful with her up to this point. Perhaps he’d be careful with her with what came next. She nodded mutely, watching as he rolled on a condom that he’d retrieved from his pocket. Her body hummed in anticipation and trepidation, but she didn’t let it show as he moved back to join her on the bed.

Jude palmed her between her legs, his big fingers exploring her. It didn’t seem possible that he could spark pleasure with a few specific touches, but it didn’t take much to have her relaxing, letting him once again take the lead. He kissed her neck. “Feels good, huh?”

“Well, I—oh.” Her eyes went wide when he pushed a second finger into her. It stretched her, the feeling not entirely pleasant at first, but he merely waited, pulsing the slightest bit, until pleasure took hold once more. She clutched his shoulders. “Kiss me again. Please.”

“You don’t have to ask twice.” He took her mouth like he owned it—like he owned every part of her. Jude slid between her legs, his body rubbing deliciously against hers. His hard length slid through her wetness, creating a friction that sparked a tide of desire deep inside her. Again? I couldn’t possibly…

He nipped her bottom lip and then soothed the slight ache with his tongue. “Ready?”

There was no mistaking his meaning. She nodded. Despite the earlier orgasm and how good it felt to have him moving against her, she was so incredibly empty. Instinct had her hooking a leg around his hips and arching up to meet him, needing more, so much more.

Jude reached between them, and then he was at her entrance. He kissed her, tongue twining with hers as he pushed into her, just a single inch. It was too much and not enough and she couldn’t help but thrash, pinned in place by his big body, overwhelmed by her helplessness and what he was doing to her. “Jude, I—”

“Shh. I’ve got you.” He rolled, taking her with him. One second she was on her back, finding it hard to breathe, and the next she was straddling him where he sat with his back against the headboard.

Sloan looked down, daunted by the sheer size of him. “I don’t know if this is going to work. You’re too big.”

He laughed, deep and full-throated, the sound rolling through her like the tide. “You can take every inch of me, sunshine. I promise you that.”

EXCERPT:

“Mick?” she whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Are you feeling something?”

“You could say that,” he murmured. “You?”

She licked her lips and he nearly groaned. “I think so,” she whispered.

“That’s good.”

“Are you going to kiss me?”

He cupped her face, let his thumbs trace her jawbone, his fingers sinking into her silky waves. “No,” he said quietly. “And not because I don’t want to, but because when I do, I want to know you’re ready. That you’ll feel it.”

She sighed. “Guys do whatever they want all the time, no emotions necessary. I want that skill.” Another shaky breath escaped her, and since they were literally an inch apart, they shared air for a single heartbeat during which neither of them moved.

Her gaze dropped to his mouth. “Okay, so I’m definitely feeling things.” She hesitated and then her hands came up to his chest. “Maybe we should test it out to be sure.”

God, she was the sweetest temptation he’d ever met, and he wanted nothing more than to cover her mouth with his. Instead, he brushed his mouth to her cheek.

“Please, Mick,” she whispered, her exhale warming his throat.

He loved the “please,” and he wanted to do just that more than anything. But when she tried to turn her head into his, to line up their mouths, he gently tightened his grip, dragging his mouth along her smooth skin instead, making his way to her ear.

“Not yet,” he whispered, letting his lips brush over her earlobe and the sensitive skin beneath it.

She moaned and clutched him. “Why not?”

It took every ounce of control he had to lift his head and meet her gaze. “Because I want to make sure you’re really with me, that you’re feeling everything I’m feeling. That there’ll be no doubt, no regrets.”

“You sure have a lot of requirements.”

He laughed. And she was right, it was all big talk for a guy who didn’t do relationships anymore. Still, he forced himself to step back and shut the passenger door.

As he rounded the hood to the driver’s side, he tried to remind himself of all the reasons she was a bad idea. He lived two hundred miles away and he was hoping to move his mom up by him and never come back here. Not to mention that Quinn lived an equal two hundred miles in the opposite direction and she was in a deeply vulnerable place. No way would he even think about taking advantage of that.

But when he slid behind the wheel and their eyes locked, he realized that while his mind could stand firm, the rest of his body wasn’t on board with the in-control program.

The Right Opening

Joanne Guidoccio shares some great tips on getting over that opening speed bump!

sisterhood of suspense

Have you ever experienced the tyranny of the blank page?

If you’re nodding in agreement, you are in good company. In fact, I believe every writer—from beginner to published—has experienced those feelings of doubt and apprehension, especially at the start of a new manuscript. That’s when gremlin thoughts are most powerful.

In this post, I will offer several suggestions on how to squash those gremlins and start writing the first page of your next manuscript.

First, I will dispel  three popular rules:

rule #1–Start with a bang

Some writers believe the first page needs drama: a passionate argument between two people or a man running out of a burning house. One problem: the reader is not yet invested in the characters. The two people arguing could be murderers, and the man running out of the burning house could be a burglar. The reader needs to know more about the characters…

About DISTANT ILLUSIONS

Follow along as USA Today Bestselling Author Kennedy Layne takes you down a suspenseful path where a ruthless killer is always one step ahead…

Brody Novak has been given his first assignment for Safeguard Security & Investigations, and it has nothing to do with his lead role as a communications specialist.  With the rest of the team occupied on a hunt for a serial killer, he’s the only one left behind to handle what everyone thought to be an open and shut case.  He should have known it wouldn’t be that easy.

Remy Kinkaid has faithfully made a phone call once a month for the last four years to ensure the killer who murdered her sister remained behind bars.  Every time she’s been given the same answer—except today.

Berke and Remy must work together to hunt down a murderer, despite their growing attraction.  It isn’t safe to give in to their desires, when the killer is always one step ahead of them.  It’s only when he stumbles that Remy is finally given the opportunity to face her past in order to have a future.

Series Description: Safeguard Security & Investigations (SSI) is owned and operated by Townes Calvert, a retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant who returned home to the States a bit more damaged than he’d care to admit. Not that anyone could tell outside of a very select group of former active duty buddies. It had taken Townes quite a while to acclimate to civilian life and he’d kept himself busy in the interim working in treacherous situations with even more dangerous friends. The final result is a close-knit unit of highly trained former military men who have the experience to protect the innocent, investigate crimes on the gritty edge, and aid local law enforcement when justice has taken a back seat to political correctness. Follow along as Kennedy Layne conveys each of their gripping stories as they work together on investigations that lead them down perilous paths of passion, intrigue, and suspense…

Remy touched her warm lips with her fingertips, remembering the piercing tingles that had played across them that night.

Four days—that’s how long had gone by since their encounter.

She’d allowed Brody to kiss her.

She’d wanted him to, and now she had to suffer without while he was so close in proximity.

It was obvious he didn’t understand her need to deny herself, and there wasn’t anything she could say to explain why that was necessary. And it was even more apparent now after four days had gone by. That was a long time to go in avoiding the giant pink elephant in the room.

Remy hadn’t realized how badly she wanted to feel something other than grief until he’d caused her to experience…well, simply put, he made her draw a breath of fresh air for the first time in four years.

Passion.

Desire.

Heat.

Awareness.

It had all been in that one kiss.

She was no longer cold, and she wasn’t sure how to get that detached feeling back. It was how she’d survived, and she was desperately searching for her way back.

Unfortunately, a yearning unlike anything she’d ever experienced even prior to her sister’s death had made itself known.

And all from one single kiss.

Remy couldn’t look at Brody in the same light anymore—a stranger, a protector, and a barrier between life and death.

He now represented life…a life she couldn’t allow herself to dream of just yet.

She’d had no choice but to walk away from him.

“I have seen many oxen with broader shoulders,”—she smirked, pulling back and leaning to the side as if to get a glimpse of his backside—“and far more accentuated hindquarters.”

She gulped.

No laughter remained as he narrowed his eyes on her. “Did you just compare my physique to that of a farm animal?”

Edith took a step back—damnation, she would not cower to him. “If you prefer, I can select another animal. A donkey, perhaps? They are well-known for their obstinacy. Or better yet, an African lion, I have read they are intimidating creatures.”

“You think me intimidating?” It was Torrington who took a step back this time, as if her words had wounded him. “Wait, do not answer that question—I have a far more important one: why do you keep appearing everywhere I am?”

“It is not I who keeps appearing,” Edith corrected. “I was minding my own business outside of Abercorn’s townhouse. You are the one who scared me from the tree. And you were the one who caught my eye in the ballroom. And I was enjoying an afternoon in the park when—“ She clamped her mouth shut.

“Enjoying an afternoon in the park until…you saw me and decided to follow?” he demanded. “I may very well be as large as an ox, or as stubborn as a donkey, or even as domineering as a lion, but at least I am not a snake—slithering and sneaking about, ready to bite and poison when the mood strikes.”

Edith gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.

“Oh, you find it belittling to be compared to a bloody animal?” he sneered. “Well, I find it insulting to be lied to, followed, and scrutinized by a woman I do not know.”

Edith sighed. “I have not been following you, I swear to it.”

Not a complete lie, or at least she hadn’t been at Lord Abercorn’s townhouse to spy on Triston—she allowed herself to think of him by his given name—nor had she attended the ball with Ophelia and Luci expecting to see him. And the park, well, that was rather serendipitous. She had decided to keep an eye on him, but she’d never thought to follow him out of London proper.

Edith glanced to the window, but the drapes were pulled securely shut. “The day must be growing late. My parents will surely be wondering where I am when I don’t arrive home on schedule.”

“I know what you are up to, Lady Edith Pelton.” His stance widened as he surveyed her from head to toe.

Jersey Diner

by Lisa Diane Kastner

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   commercial romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Lauren has a dead end job as a waitress at the Oaklyn Diner. She becomes ecstatic when the diner is chosen to be the focal point of an upcoming movie, *Jersey Diner,* starring Jonathan Pearce. When filming ends she moves to California to start a new life with him. Lauren quickly discovers that all that she thought was real and true are in question.

Excerpt:

Before me the television hummed. The remote felt heavy and big in my hands. With the next channel came my favorite interview show. The host, Lawrence Corran, spoke with Jonathan. I couldn’t believe it. They played a rerun of my favorite episode.

The two men were on a stage with a black backdrop. On a table next to them stood glasses filled with water. Lawrence, a small man with a receding hairline, thick horn-rimmed glasses, a goatee, and a rounded jaw, sat across from Jonathan. Jonathan lounged in his high backed chair. If someone else sat in the chair, it would have been overpowering, but he looked confident, relaxed. Mama used to call him a young Sean Connery. His thin black sweater provided a hint of the muscles underneath it. A grey suit jacket hung from his shoulders. The creases in his black suit pants followed the bend of his knees. I wanted to reach in and touch those creases. He glowed with each move and every word. He crossed his legs and formed a pyramid with his fingers.

“Wasn’t that screen test for the next day?”

Jonathan looked embarrassed by the question. “Yes. They said they could use someone with my looks and then sent me home.”

I moved closer to the screen.

“How long after that test did you get your first part?”

“Six months.”

“Now. See students? Don’t get discouraged if they don’t call you back immediately. Even Jonathan Pearce waited to get his first part.” Lawrence flipped to the next note card.

“I was an extra in a military movie called, The Edge of Life.”

My lips moved in time with his.

“I had one line. I said, ‘Sir, yes sir.’” His eyes crinkled with a touch of a smile. I had heard this story a dozen times.

“Again, students. Not only did he have to wait six months but he also had a very small role.”

“After that my next role wasn’t for another year. I took night classes and got a job as a construction worker.”

“That’s how you stayed trim.”

“I wanted to spend my money on classes so I needed a job that would maintain my physique.” Jonathan turned, looked at me and leaned in. “Lauren. Lauren? How are you doing?”

I looked around the living room. I felt self-conscious in my clothes. I tied the knot in my robe tighter and pointed to myself as if another Lauren sat next to me.

“Yes. I wondered if you needed anything?” he said.

I hesitated for a moment. My throat dried up as I tried to respond. “I-I-I’m fine.”

Jonathan rested back in his chair, tension eased from his shoulders. “Good. I’m glad to hear it. I’ll be in town soon. We can get together for coffee.”

Did Jonathan Pearce ask me out on a date? “I’m sorry? I mean. Sure. That. Would. Be. Great.

” I reached my hand out to touch the screen. To see if I could be there with him and test if this was real. My fingertips reached the screen’s edge. The static electrified them, covered them in a fuzzy haze that spread up my wrist and traveled down my arm. It prepared me to become one with the images before me. Ready me to become one with Jonathan.

I prepared to break through the barrier of static, glass, and electricity, when Jonathan said, “Lauren, you better get to bed.”

He nudged my shoulder. “I gotta go now. Don’t forget. Coffee.” He winked. “Lauren. Lauren?”

His voice changed to emulate my father’s tone. Now that’s a gross thought. Someone shook my shoulder a little more. A fog broke free from my mind. It forced me to wake up. The television shone before me, my father clicking off the static filled screen.

“You should head to bed now.”

Lisa stopped by the blog today and graciously agreed to share some of her writing tips.

Thanks for joining us, Lisa!

What do you think is the best way to publish these days?

Great question.  I think it depends on the author’s goals.  Some authors really want to go with a big publishing house. Maybe because their favorite authors are from a big house or they equate working with a big house as a status symbol. Whatever the reasoning, they need that.  Other authors want the freedom that comes with independent publishing. And still others will go with indie or small presses. Each one has its own pro’s and con’s.  Big houses tend to have an easier time placing books yet they rarely spend money on promotional tours and tend to purchase books based on a specific market or demographic. So if you don’t write to that market or demographic then you probably wouldn’t be selected to work with a big house.

Smaller houses tend to have distinct purposes/goals so as long as your writing fits within those purposes/goals then you have a higher likelihood of being selected.  Smaller houses used to be at a disadvantage when it came to distribution. That’s not true any more since many PODs have strong distribution channels which include the big retailers like Costco, Target, and the like.

Independent writers are the equivalent of owning their own businesses. They have complete ownership for all aspects of the book – story, editing, selection of cover design, distribution, marketing, and so on.  The great part of being an independent writer is you have complete and total ownership over everything. It’s your world.  In today’s market, many independent authors have done incredibly well and even surpassed sales for authors out of large houses.

Personally, I’m somewhere between the smaller/indie house and independent writer. I like having that accountability and flexibility.

What are your favorite genres to read? Why?

I read everything but mostly cross genre and/or magical realism. I like walking into a world and experiencing it from a different point of view. I like surprises. I want to read a story that catapults me into another world and by the end of it leaves me with that fabulous feeling like my mind has been expanded and I’ve lost my breath (for a moment).

How do you approach starting a new book?

I often start with an image or an event and allow myself to free write.  After I have five or more pages then the story tends to appear.  I’ll research the topic before I start writing and along the way.  I like to verify information as I go along. I will free write for another 50 pages or so and then I’ll map out the rest of the book. As I continue to write, I’ll adjust the storyline summary to reflect what’s actually written.  Once I’ve written a complete first draft then I’ll go back over it for consistency and see where there are opportunities to strengthen the story.

What are the best writing books or blogs you’ve ever read?

Oh wow. There are so many. For inspiration, Stephen King’s On Writing and Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird are phenomenal. For nuts and bolts of writing then, Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Volger. I actually have a bookshelf full of books on writing.

What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?

I love, love, love food. I’m a total foody. I love experimenting by going to different restaurants. I love a good workout. Right now I’m into yoga. Before that I was into running at least three days a week. Before that I was into Zumba. I also adore movies. I just saw Colossal and was blown away. I love hanging out with my husband and wandering the planet together.  Our last stop was to San Francisco. I’m hoping we can return to Paris together next year.

Do you have any personal heroes/heroines?

I think everyone has a little bit of a hero/heroine inside them. Yesterday, my hero was my husband because he let me vent after a rather challenging day. Just the sound of his voice puts me at ease. Growing up my dad was my hero because he was fun and cool and still a dad. I’ve had teachers who were my heroes like Mr. Marcucci who nurtured a lonely, introverted student and helped build her self esteem. Or Da Chen who was one of my teachers in my MFA program. He sent me a note saying I had written the perfect story. Before I could call him and tell him to stop messing with me, he messaged me and said he wasn’t kidding. It was perfect and I needed to send it out ASAP.  I framed that email. 🙂

Have you had any unusual or noteworthy occupations?

Now this is an interesting question.  When I was in college I did a lot of freelancing jobs. I worked the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels Tour in the crew’s kitchen. I worked in the office at the docks for a boat distribution company. I was a dancer and co-hosted a couple of shows for Dance Party USA, a syndicated show on the USA network in the 1980s. I modeled in my later teens. I’ve done radio and voiceover work.

What was your best date ever?

My best date? Any day when I get to hang out with my husband is a best date. I cannot describe how it makes my soul sing for whenever we are together. We recently spent Christmas in San Francisco and every day exploring the town together was amazing. That said, simply hanging out at home and snuggling is pretty phenomenal too.

Tell us something you are really proud of.

Hmm … I dunno.  I won a Bubble Yum biggest bubble blowing competition when I was 11. I won a 10 speed bike. That was kinda cool.

Can you confide something you wish you were better at?

Oh yeah, tons of stuff. I wish I was more athletic. I wish I was more patient.  I wish I had a super duper high metabolism so I could eat anything I want. I wish I had 1% of Bill Gates total net worth. Oh wait … that’s not what you meant. 😉

I’m with you on all of those goals!

What could be a total disaster becomes something else when a tall, dark bull rider turns out to be a white knight in disguise. Tanner knows Evie has slipped under his skin, but she lives in Australia and his future is under a cloud. Can two people with too many reasons to walk away make the bold decision to stay?

Sarah Mayberry

Sarah Mayberry lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner of nearly twenty years (who has recently become her husband!). When she’s not in her pajamas eating peanut butter sandwiches and typing away madly on her latest story, she enjoys reading, cooking, sleeping, pilates, going to the movies and shopping. Not necessarily in that order!

Some of Sarah’s favorite authors are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Gibson, Karina Bliss, Mary Balogh, Julie James, Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran, and Loretta Chase. Her favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally, although she is also very fond of His Girl Friday and Something About Mary.

Sarah loves to hear from readers via her website at www.sarahmayberry.com

My review

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned many times before, I would read anything Sarah Mayberry writes (including the phonebook!) She has an innate way of bringing her characters to life and giving them real-life issues to overcome that leaves me either in need of a box of tissues, or a fan!

I loved the tough-as-nails Tanner with a heart of gold. When he finds down-on-her luck Evie holed up in a flee-bitten hotel after getting dumped by the love of her life, he makes it his mission to ensure she is safe until her flight back to Australia.

Evie gets the shock of a lifetime when she flies halfway around the world to surprise her boyfriend, only to find him in the arms of another woman. Broke and heartbroken, she wanders around a strange city until she finds a room at a dubious hotel.

She gets interrupted from a well-deserved crying jag by the cowboy who witnessed her humiliation. But can she trust the handsome cowboy long enough to arrange her trip home?

Sweet, funny, heart-wrenching, sexy, all are adjectives to describe this book.

I give Tanner 5 lovely kisses!

“If you wanted to dance, you should have just said so.” Despite his gruff tone, Noah’s holding me so close to him that I can hear his heartbeat and feel the hard plane of his chest beneath the thin T-shirt he’s wearing. I can feel my nipples tighten as they brush against him. Traitors.

“I didn’t know you could salsa.” I try to sound flippant, but I’m not sure I pull it off.

In response, he places his hand on the side of my neck, sending shocks of awareness racing through me. “Try to keep up.”

Noah isn’t as flawless at the dance steps as Sebastian was, but whatever he lacks in finesse, he makes up for with pure unadulterated sexuality and control. He is comfortable in his own skin as few men are, and it shows. He’s aggressive in dancing, as he is in life, and although we’re dancing together, I feel like he controls my every move. He doesn’t let go of me, one hand always on my back, holding me firmly to him as our bodies move to the music in a dance of seduction as old as time. He lifts my arm as he skims his knuckles down the tender underside, making me shiver, then takes both of my wrists in his, firm fingers wrapped around them as I dance for him, his eyes hungrily watching me.

It’s as if all of the unfulfilled want and need that’s been simmering between us is poured into the dance, and we move together like our bodies know each other intimately. He turns me so my back is to him, my bottom pressed against the hard bulge beneath his pants and his hand splayed across my stomach as I circle my hips, and then he spins me around so we’re facing each other and pulls me back against him. I’m past combustion. The heat in me is already at the flash point, and fire is licking through my veins, demanding to be extinguished.

Our hips undulate, our pelvises grinding together erotically as his hand caresses my hair. This isn’t dancing; this is foreplay.

“What gives, sweetheart?” he asks, his voice gravelly.

Dancing together like this has created a familiarity that makes me bold. Screw paralysis by analysis.

“I want you to make love to me.”

Our foreheads are pressed together, our noses touching, our faces so close I can see the golden flecks in his whiskey-colored eyes. With one arm still banded around my waist, he cups my cheek in his hand and gently swipes the pad of his thumb across my cheekbone. The simple sweetness of the gesture sends my stomach plummeting to my toes. His gaze lingers on my lips for a long minute, and I will him to kiss me. Instead, he shakes his head slightly.

“I can’t.”

“Fine,” I snap, pushing him away from me with every ounce of strength I have. He barely moves—I might as well try to shove a boulder—but he lets me go.

“If you won’t, I’ll find someone who will.”

I don’t give him a backward glance as I walk out of the bar.
