Celebrating Spring with #FreebieFriday- #readingcommunity #BookDeals

Crocus

I don’t know about you but I’m ready for spring!

It seems as though spring has found my little corner of the world. Crocuses are blooming and azaleas, bleeding hearts, hostas, cherry trees, and a variety of other plants are not far behind.

Needless to say, this goes a long way to lifting my spirits and to share in the joy I’m setting two of my suspense stories to FREE for the weekend!

First up, I have Skating on Thin Ice- Men of WarHawks Book 1

Skating on Thin Ice

Sam Walters made a deal with the devil.

In order to win a much-needed contract as physical therapist to one of the NHL’s leading hockey teams, Sam must delay the recovery of their sniper, Mac Wanowski. The trouble is, the more she gets to know the taciturn hockey player, the more she aches to help him.

Mac ‘The Hammer’ Wanowski chased the Stanley Cup dream for too many years. Last time he was close it had cost him his wife. As injuries continue to plague the team, Mac works to catch a killer and keep the woman he’s come to love from the hands of a madman.

HOCKEY CAN BE A DANGEROUS SPORT, ESPECIALLY WHEN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE AT STAKE.

Mac halted on the edge of the tree line and eyed the distance between them and the relative protection of the cabin. He’d assured Sam their shooter was nothing more than an inept hunter, but he wasn’t so sure. Something about the guy’s stance and his effort to stay hidden, even after the accidental shot, didn’t ring true. There were too many coincidences and they all seemed directed toward keeping him away from the playoffs. As soon as they got to the landline he planned to call Doc and get Sam off the mountain.

β€œTired?” she asked, her husky voice a warm caress.

He turned and a wry smile twisted his lips. Her perky hat was squashed on one side from her fall, twigs embedded in the thick white fur and one lone jaunty leaf sticking out the top like Robin Hood’s feather.

β€œWhat’s so funny?” she asked, glancing over her shoulder.

Now the smile became a grin. β€œYou have a… ah…” He plucked the feather/leaf from her cap.

β€œOh,” she said, startled. She met his gaze with a sparkle lighting her incredible blue eyes. β€œDon’t like my fashion sense?”

He liked that about her. She had a quirky sense of humor. They’d been through a stressful day and here she was, a beautiful smile on those luscious lips as she made fun of her dishevelment. Sam wasn’t like any woman he’d ever met. β€œI like it… you, just fine,” he admitted.

She blushed rather adorably. β€œYou’re not so bad yourself.” She shivered and stared wistfully at the promising heat of the cabin. β€œIs it safe?”

Which proved she was as smart as she was gorgeous.

β€œI guess we’ll find out.” He readjusted the crutches under his arms. β€œI’ll go first. Wait a few minutes, then follow.”

She shook her head and pushed past before he realized what she was up to.

β€œSam,” he called, trying not to trip over his snowshoes as he got turned around. β€œGive me skates over these rabbit feet any day,” he muttered. β€œSam, wait.”

β€œNot sure if you heard, Wanowski, but it’s the twenty-first century, women’s lib is a thing. Besides. I’m not the one who’s injured.” She set off at a brisk pace, her snow bunny outfit a bright splash of color in the black and white scenery.

In other circumstances, he might have been tempted to explore the sparks between him and the therapist, but Mac wasn’t looking for a relationship, and she had serious enquiries only written all over her delectable body.

β€œHey, Detective, got a minute?”

Matt closed his eyes and drew a deep breath. He liked and admired his partner’s girlfriend, but the last thing he felt like doing was playing nice for the press right now.

β€œCan’t, Jules, I’m busy.” He didn’t have to turn his head to see her disapproval, it bore a hole through his shoulders.

β€œC’mon, Roy. The public have a right to know what’s going on. They need to be notified.”

That did it. He rose and swiveled on his feet to stomp over and get in her face, heedless of the camera crew waiting in the wings. β€œWhat in the h-e-double-l do you think we’ve been doing?” he roared. Connor had warned him about taking cases like these personally, but dammit, it was personal. This young woman had a family somewhere, maybe even a husband and children who would never get to see her or tell her how much they loved her again.

Damn right, it was personal.

Julie gazed at him with worried eyes before turning to her crew and slicing a hand across her throat. β€œGive us a minute, guys. I’ll call you when I’m ready.” They looked at each other, shrugged and gathered their gear, moving to stand beside the VIBS News van. When she returned her attention to Ray, determination overrode the concern. β€œYou want to tell me what has you so riled up?” She raised her hand. β€œAnd yes, it’s off the record.”

No, he did not want to tell the pretty reporter the story of his life, thank you very much. He trusted Julie as much as he did most of the individuals in his life, with the exception of Connorβ€”which was to say, with a bag of salt. He’d found people tended to say what they thought you wanted to hear, not what they actually meant. In his line of work, there was a stark contrast between the two. Which meant he kept to himself, safer that way.

On the other hand, this was Jules and she’d been through some tough times of her own, so he made an effort to tone down his frustration. β€œI don’t like when I can’t keep my city safe,” he admitted. He angled sideways so he could keep an eye on the techs. β€œThis guy, it’s like he’s always one step ahead of us, you know?”

She leaned over the yellow ribbon and patted his too-tense arm. β€œYou’ll get him, Matt. I know you will.” Then she straightened and donned her investigative reporter face. β€œCan VIBS get a short statement from you? It doesn’t have to give away anything, just let the public know you’re working on it, okay?”

Matt sighed. She was like a Pitbull with a piece of meat.
