This week’s Tuesday book reviews are dark angsty murder mysteries- perfect for the dreary weather we’ve been having!

Two are NetGalley choices and the third is from blogging friend and talented writer, D.L. Finn.

On Her Watch (Bree Taggert Book 8) by Melinda Leigh

Sheriff Bree Taggert becomes a target when she follows the twisting trail of a serial killer in a bone-chilling novel of suspense by #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.

The latest Bree Taggert murder/mystery opens with the discovery of a body drop site found by a couple of hikers who quickly become suspects in the investigation. Each of the three young women are found at various stages of decomposition, making identification a nightmare for the sheriff’s team.

Bree has her hands full with news hungry reporters, distraught parents, and pressure from counsellors to find the killer. Added to that, a rampaging flu decimates her staff, and a case of domestic abuse brings up the past for Bree. Is it any wonder she feels pulled in a hundred directions?

The author softens what could be a hard-boiled police mystery by showing Bree’s devotion to her young niece and nephew (under her care after the death of Bree’s sister), and the growing relationship between her and investigator Matt Flynn. These are my favorite parts of the story, though guessing who the killer is fun too 🙂

I’m really enjoying this series and highly recommend it to readers who like police procedural stories.

Locked in Pursuit: An Electra McDonnell Novel (Electra McDonnell Series Book 4) by Ashley Weaver

Safecracker Ellie McDonnell hasn’t seen Major Ramsey—her handsome but aloof handler in the British government—since their tumultuous mission together three months before, but when she hears about a suspicious robbery in London she feels compelled to contact him. Together they discover that a rash of burglaries in the city all lead back to a hotbed of spies in the neutral city Lisbon, Portugal, and an unknown object brought to London by a mysterious courier.

First, isn’t this cover gorgeous? I love the safe inserted into the title- perfect!

Electra McDonnell comes from a family of thieves. The murder of her father and subsequent conviction of her mother for the crime shaped young Ellie’s life. She lives with her safecracking uncle and male cousins, learning all that they know about the ‘business’. When a burglary goes wrong, Ellie is arrested and earns her freedom by agreeing to help the handsome and aloof Major Ramsey in the war effort.

In this instalment of the popular series, Ellie reads of a suspicious robbery at a fancy London soiree and takes her misgivings to the major, who is still in recovery from four gunshot wounds from their last mission. A passionate kiss in their past creates an awkward distance between them and Ellie must argue for her place in the investigation.

A rash of burglaries traced back to a missing map and a woman’s murder forces the major to set his personal feelings aside to call in Ellie and her uncle to find the map before the Germans get hold of the critical information.

It was difficult sometimes, this job. It’s easy to think of the enemy as a shadowy figure until he’s a man bleeding on a cellar floor.

Locked in Pursuit- Ashley Weaver

There is an underlying storyline to this series that is masterfully doled out to keep the reader hooked, and it works! lol. Ellie has a bone-deep feeling there is more to the death of her father than she’s been told. There are too many aspects of the case, and a remembered devotion between her parents, for Ellie to believe her mother brutally killed her husband. The truth seemed to die with her in prison until things come to light that changes everything.

I can’t wait for book five!

The Destination: Harbor Pointe Series Book 3 by D.L. Finn

It’s 1967, and best friends Lacey and Sandy are enjoying a beach vacation, completely unaware of the danger that is lying in wait outside their door.

Best friends Lacey and Sandy are on the road to a relaxing beach vacation. The women are polar opposites but can’t imagine life without the other. Lacey is a free spirit, while Sandy is reserved, so it’s no surprise when Lacey disappears overnight with a handsome young man. But when morning arrives and there is no sign of her friend, Sandy panics.

Peppered with interesting facts, characters from a previous book in the series, and a couple of watchful spirits, this is a quick, page-turning read. The author does a wonderful job bringing the fresh ocean breezes and the ambiance of the Harbor Pointe Inn to the forefront so that they become characters in their own right.

I’m loving this series!

My city boy grandson checking out the horses 🙂
