January #Reads Part ii- Their Inseparable Bond @JillWeatherholt, Mind Games by Nora Roberts, Lost Kingdom by Laurel Black, Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout #Bookreview

It’s been just a couple of days and the snow is gone, and no, I don’t miss it, lol. We’ve been catching some gorgeous cloud formations with the Pacific storm surges and I can’t resist taking a few photos.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who offered to highlight my upcoming release on their blogs. You warmed my heart with all your kind messages ❤

This week I have another eclectic mix of books to share. Everything from a sweet romance, to a suspenseful thriller, and a tale of the gods.

Their Inseparable Bond by Jill Weatherholt (An inspirational romance novel)

They’re a mismatched family…

But their hearts line up just right

Two broken hearts are linked through a matchmaking grandmother and a pair of irresistible twins.

After the loss of his beloved wife during childbirth, Jake turns to his career training service dogs to ease the pain and give him the strength to care for his twins, Kayla and Kyle. With the support of the community and senior-Myrna-who the children love, he’s finding a path through his family’s grief. Then, Myrna’s beautiful granddaughter arrives with the intention of moving her grandmother to Florida, and the war begins.
Olivia is still reeling from her husband’s decision to end their marriage and the demands of her profession as an E.R. doctor. She doesn’t need advice on how to care for her grandmother’s failing eyesight from a stranger, even if he is handsome and has two adorable children. So how does he manage to trick/convince her to stay for a while and help him train a rambunctious puppy to become her grandmother’s service dog? And why do the angry Kayla and adorable Kyle tug so hard on her heartstrings?
This is a sweet second-chance love story, but more than that, it’s a lesson in faith and trust in God and his infinite grace.

Mind Games by Nora Roberts (A suspenseful new novel of tragedy and trauma, love and family, and the evil that awaits.)

But that ability to see into minds and souls still lurks within her, and though Grammie calls it a gift, it feels more like a curse—because the inmate who shattered her childhood has the same ability.

Heart-wrenching and engrossing.

On what should have been a joyful summer vacation with Grammy in Appalachia, Twelve-year-old Thea and her younger brother, Rem, suffer the devastating loss of their parents at the hands of a psychopath.
Thea and her Grammy (to a lesser degree) have the rare ability to ‘see’ into the minds of others, and on this fateful night they bear witness to their loved one’s murders. Thea can recall enough to allow authorities to capture the killer, Riggs, and send him to prison for life. But it doesn’t end there.
Over the next several years, Thea grows and pursues her passion for creating video games. Complex worlds that she will use to break the evil Riggs, who shares her gift and wants her to pay for taking away his freedom.
It’s a game only one of them can live through.
This book had me crying more than once. I ached for Thea and her family, and prayed someone would shove a shiv in Riggs’s gut. But it was the inner strength Thea had to face the devil in his den that made this a five-star read for me- so good!

Thanks to the publisher, NetGalley, and the author for this enthralling story. Highly recommended.

Lost Kingdom by Laurel Black *Teen & young adult dark fantasy)

Trusting him is the only way to save the kingdom.
Betraying her is the only way to keep them both alive.

Stripped of her memories and her magic, Raven has been left for dead.

As a prisoner in the enemy’s mineral mines, her only clue to who she is and where she came from is the mysterious map tattooed on her hand—a map containing hidden secrets that some people would kill for.

Jeddak is one of those people.

This is a fun action/adventure!

A member of the fabled Zavien tribe and indentured to spend her life working underground in the mines, Raven has lost hope of ever escaping. She has no memory of her past other than recurring dreams of a man she believes to be her brother and a cryptic oath from his lips to ‘Make her pay.’ Who and why remain elusive, but then a shocking discovery and help from an unlikely source sends her on a dangerous journey through inhospitable lands in search of the truth.
Jeddak doesn’t have the time to babysit a spoiled princess with a cutting tongue. He must retrieve the Zavien Stone and bring it back to his king before the new moon, or else his betrothed, who is being held captive, will be lost.
Two goals, one stone. Who will take the prize?
This book is fun! Jeddak and Raven have a combustible chemistry that asserts itself in so much sarcasm and distrust you just know they’re going to either fall in love or kill each other, lol
I’m looking forward to the second book in this series!

Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Dark fantasy)

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi—pure-bloods—have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals—well, not so much.

Seventeen-year-old half-blood Alexandria and her mother are on the run. They’ve been moving throughout the mortal realm for the last three years, and Alex is so over it. She doesn’t fit in this world and dreams of returning to the Covenant and her training to become a Sentinel- a trained warrior who hunts daimons, creatures who seek to drain Pures like her mother of their lifeblood.
When a daimon finds them and kills her mom, Alex blames herself and swears vengeance. But revenge comes at a price she could never expect.

This story started out slow for me but built to a page-turner by the midway point. Alex has some hard decisions complicated by secrets surrounding her upcoming birthday and a bond she discovers that could change everything, not to mention her incredibly hot Pure instructor, who she cannot fall for at penalty of death.
Just another school year.

One more of the clouds over Victoria- so beautiful.

  8. Thank you for sharing reviews of the books you read this month. I like that you talked about different types of stories.

The inspirational love story about a family brought together sounds very sweet. The thriller about a psychic killer seems scary but exciting based on how it made you feel.

The young adult fantasy books with strong heroines going on dangerous adventures also sound really interesting. I want to read about the characters’ quests of discovery after hearing your descriptions.

Your reviews give me a good sense of the emotional power. 🙂
