Character Interview with Oliver from

A GIFT FOR SANTA

Today, we’re talking with Oliver Gray, owner of a reindeer farm in Alaska. Oliver, how do you make a living as a reindeer farmer?

Tourism, mostly. In the summer, people come out to visit the farm. We have goats, rabbits, chickens, and a pig as well as the reindeer for the children to interact with, and we have a nice picnic area over by the barn.

This time of year, we do Christmas parties, with reindeer rides and an appearance by Santa Claus.

Can you tell us what led you to start your reindeer farm?

My wife, Becky, and I were living in downtown Anchorage, working office jobs, and one of our neighbors was Star the Reindeer. You know about Star? The reindeer who lives in downtown Anchorage and goes for walks around town and along the park strip? Well Becky and I got to be friends with Mrs. Stewart, Star’s owner. We’d go along on their walks and talk with the kids who gathered to pet Star. Now I was only thirty-seven, but my beard was already turning white, and one day one of the kids asked if I was Santa Claus. I looked at Becky, and I could see she was thinking the same thing I was. You see, we couldn’t have children of our own, but this would be a way to share the magic with all sorts of children. So we quit our jobs, found some land for sale, and started the reindeer farm.

Guest Post - It's All About the Romance

Where did you get your reindeer?

Becky and I made a trip to Norway to talk to some of the reindeer herders there, and once we got to know them, they offered us breeding stock for a good price. Of course, getting the reindeer from Norway to Anchorage wasn’t cheap or easy, but we imported two bulls and ten cows, and our herd has grown from that start.

You took a risk. Do you ever wish you you’d stayed with those office jobs?

Not for a minute. It’s been almost thirty years since we started the farm, and I can honestly say I’ve never regretted it. There were struggles, certainly, but overall the reindeer farm has been the third greatest blessing of my life.

Third greatest?

Well, the first is my wife, Becky, the most wonderful partner a man could ever have. Second is Marissa, our niece, who came to live with us when she was ten. She loved growing up on the farm and taking care of the reindeer and other animals. In fact, she loved animals so much, she grew up to be a wildlife biologist.

Guest Post - It's All About the Romance 2

Is Marissa still active on the farm?

Well, she’s here now, taking care of the animals and playing an elf at the parties. I’m having some health problems, you see, and Marissa had a bit of a career setback thanks to that rat she was dating at her old job. Lying, thieving – never mind. Anyway, I’m sure it will all get straightened out soon.

In the meantime, since I can’t play my usual role of Santa Claus, Chris Allen is filling in. Good man, Chris. He and Marissa used to be engaged a long time ago, but they had a falling out. I’m not sure what it was all about, but I know she’s been avoiding him ever since. It’s a miracle Marissa agreed to work with Chris at all. But then, I’ve always said Christmas is the season for miracles. Maybe, before it’s all said and done, we can count on a few more.

Eight motives to kill: Too Many Women in the Room @JoanneGuidoccio #CozyMystery #Suspense

I’m excited to share the new release of friend and fellow Sisterhood of Suspense author Joanne Guidoccio’s cozy mystery, Too Many Women in the Room!

Isn’t this a killer cover? 🙂

TooManyWomenintheRoom_w11221_750 (2)

Blurb

When Gilda Greco invites her closest friends to a VIP dinner, she plans to share David Korba’s signature dishes and launch their joint venture— Xenia, an innovative Greek restaurant near Sudbury, Ontario. Unknown to Gilda, David has also invited Michael Taylor, a lecherous photographer who has throughout the past three decades managed to annoy all the women in the room. One woman follows Michael to a deserted field for his midnight run and stabs him in the jugular.

Gilda’s life is awash with complications as she wrestles with a certain detective’s commitment issues and growing doubts about her risky investment in Xenia. Frustrated, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers decades-old secrets and resentments that have festered until they explode into untimely death. Can Gilda outwit a killer bent on killing again?

Excerpt

When the telephone call came, I was deep in a dreamless sleep. Startled and disoriented, I glanced at the clock. Five forty-seven. Tempted to ignore the call, I realized it could be my mother. In Italy, it was eleven forty-seven. While my mother was aware of the time difference, she would not hesitate to call if there was some kind of emergency. Or someone else could be calling about her.

To still these obsessive thoughts, I picked up the phone.

“Took you long enough,” Carlo Fantin said in an exasperated tone. “Did you just get in?”

What was he implying? And why was he calling? Had someone told him about the evening’s events? I dismissed the last thought. None of the women or men—even Michael Taylor—would think of relaying the evening’s events to Carlo.

“I’ve been asleep for hours,” I said, gripping the phone. While I had been waiting for him to call and resume our relationship, I doubted he would do so in the early hours of the morning. “Is there some reason for this call?”

A pause. “There’s been a murder. A jogger found the body of Michael Taylor in Bell Grove field.”

I jolted upright as a flash of adrenaline tingled through my body. “What happened? How? And

murdered? By whom?” Michael Taylor dead? While I had never liked the man and dreaded my encounters with him, I didn’t wish death on him. Carlo must have a reason for waking me up with this information.

“I heard all about tonight’s dinner from Jean Taylor,” he said in a low voice.

As Michael’s wife, she would be the first to learn of his death, and she would have given Carlo her version of the evening’s events. And not necessarily in a lucid tone. The calm yogini had a habit of breaking down outside the peaceful confines of her studio. She was triggered by strong emotions and unsettling events. Michael’s death fell well beyond both categories.

I returned to the present moment and caught the tail end of Carlo’s conversation. “…scheduled you in for nine thirty. Luke Morrison will be questioning you.”

“Questioning me?” I said as my heart beat at an alarming rate. “Why?”

“We’re questioning everyone who was at the dinner,” he said. “You were the last people to see

Michael alive.”

“How was he killed? What did Jean tell you?”

“You know I can’t share any details,” he said, cutting me off without saying goodbye.

Character Interview—Gilda Greco

Did you think that your life would end up being in a book?

Why not? It’s been dissected everywhere else. After winning a $19 million Lotto649 lottery, I was featured in almost every newspaper across the country. And I agreed to do several interviews the Lottery Corporation recommended. Don’t get me wrong: I am grateful for the money, but I’m not overly thrilled with the loss of privacy.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog, or the romance?

Hmm! I would love to have more romantic scenes, but I can’t really fault the author. I have an on-off relationship with Chief Detective Carlo Fantin and, right now, we’re in the middle of a three-month break that he initiated.

What do you love to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, leisurely brunches and lunches, doing yoga, and growing my career counseling business.

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

I love reading cozy romances and could easily spend entire days immersed in them. The role of amateur sleuth is one that I’ve always coveted.

Do you like the way the book ended?

I prefer to read books that end on a positive note with no loose ends—a feature of all cozies. And Too Many Women in the Room is no exception.

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

I have an inside scoop here. A Different Kind of Reunion, Book 3 is at the polishing stage. And ideas are percolating about The Missing Gigolo, Book 4.

What do you do for a living?

Life before the Lottery Win: High school mathematics teacher for 20+ years

Life after the Lottery Win: Career Development Practitioner and owner of ReCareering

What is your greatest fear?

I have so many goals I wish to accomplish. I fear I’ll run out of time.

Gus shares some home truths in a candid #CharacterInterview #amreading #RRBC

 I did a recent interview with Gus, the hero from my upcoming release, Missing: The Lady Said No, on Stephany Tullis’ lovely blog. What do you think of Gus? 🙂

USA Today Best Selling Author Jacquie Biggar’s Favorite Character

April 5, 2017

On April 25th, USA Today Best Selling Author, Jacquie Biggar is releasing another of the books in the new and exciting multi-author branded series based in Chandler County Kentucky.  Her book is entitled Missing: The Lady Said No.

I asked Jacquie to introduce her favorite character to me and her reading audience. As you may know by now, Chandler County is a romantic suspense series. So I asked Jacquie  to tell us what’s so special about her favorite character and why! Thanks, Jacquie for stopping by and sharing.

JB: My favorite character is Augustus (Gus) Grant and here’s why!

He’s a 1950’s detective I fashioned after one of my favorite TV shows, Columbo. Gus is a bit klutzy, a geek, and not your normal hero. But, he’s smart, kind, and endearing. Gus runs into an old girlfriend when he’s assigned the case of a murder in his home area of Chandler County.

NOTE: Gus likes to take the lead and insisted on answering my questions himself. Go for it Gus!

ST: What is your most noticeable characteristic?

GUS: (He grins.) “My habit of tapping my fingers while thinking. It annoys the heck out of most people.”

ST: What quality do you like most in the opposite sex?

GUS: “That’s easy. Fidelity. My first wife liked to, shall we say, play the field. She and I were a mistake. If only I’d known then that a relationship involves so much more than hormones.” (His eyes take on a far-away expression.) “That’s the difference with Becky, Rebecca Hayes. She’s faithful to those she cares about. It’s not in her nature to deliberately hurt anyone. She’s a special lady.”

ST: If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

GUS: “I would change my need for success.” (He taps his fingers, notices what he’s doing and quits, fisting his hand in his lap.) “I come from a family where second-best was never good enough. I always felt like I had to do better and it cost me the love of my life.” (He frowned and shook his head.) “You know the saying, hindsight is twenty-twenty? In my case that’s never been truer.”

ST: Where and when were you the happiest?

GUS:  “I invited Becky to the county fair. She wore the prettiest white dress with red roses on the skirt. She told me she’d made it herself. I took her dancing in that dress and it was pure magic.” (A reminiscent light enters his eyes.)

ST: What personality trait do you admire most in a friend?

GUS: “Loyalty. I didn’t get a lot of that as a kid.”

ST: What is your biggest regret?

GUS: (He rubs his chin.) “Walking away from Becky. I could have handled the whole thing better. I’m not very proud of my behavior.” He looks me in the eye. “I just hope she’ll give me a second chance, ya know?”

ST: What is your favorite motto or expression?

GUS: (He smiles.) “I like to put people at their ease when I interview them and then, just when they think they’re getting off scott-free, I say ‘Pardon me, ma’am, there’s just one more thing.’ Get’s them every time.”

ST: What is your greatest extravagance?

GUS: “Hmm, I’d have to say my ’52 Buick.” (He leans forward and places his elbow on the desk.) “She’s a beaut. I’ll take you for a drive sometime. Once you go for a cruise in a Buick, you’re ruined for any other car, trust me.”

ST: What is your most treasured possession?

GUS: (He pulls his badge from the inside pocket of his trench coat and holds it up for me to duly admire.) “Isn’t it a beaut? This says I’m someone, you know? I made something of myself. Something I can hold my head up for.”

ST: What do you like/enjoy/dislike most about Chandler County?

GUS: (He sits back, crosses his arms.) “It’s the same answer either way. I like the closeness of the community and how everyone has your back. At the same time I can’t say I like how everyone knows your business. It’s a catch-twenty.” He shrugs.

BOOK DESCRIPTION: MISSING: THE LADY SAID NO

All About Romance – The Rakehell’s Seduction Character Interview with Ambrose Worthing

  • Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Answer: “My life in a book? I shudder to think how the writer discovered what I was up to… Lord, a book. I hope she doesn’t know what I’ve been up to with Alexandra when the two of us are alone. She doesn’t know about that does she?” Ambrose glances around the room suspiciously as though expected Lauren to pop out from behind a settee.

  •  What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Answer: “My favorite scene?” Ambrose chuckled. “I suppose any moment where I get Alexandra alone. She’s positively addicting, a fine brandy I can’t drink enough of, you know what I mean?” He smiles but then he sobers. “The ending, perhaps the ending is my favorite. Where she forgives me for accepting that bloody bet to seduce her, and she tells me she loves me. That,” his voice goes hoarse. “Is my favorite scene.”

  • What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

Answer: “Chasing Alexandra to the ends of the earths. I’d go anywhere and do anything for that woman. I want to spend the rest of my life with her. She loves the country, so I suppose we’ll spend a fair amount of time riding and walking.” Ambrose grins. “Among other things.”

  • Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

Answer: “Regency romance, that’s where she put me in isn’t it? I suppose so, wouldn’t know where else I’d belong. I’d not be much use in the future.” Ambrose chuckled.

  • Do you like the way the book ended?

Answer: “Yes, I absolutely do. She let me stay with Alexandra. My life with her is just beginning.”

  • Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

Answer: “I suppose I would, although I imagine she would much rather focus on dealing with my friend Vaughn, he certainly needs a happy ending. That man has quite a problem and I imagine the solution is Miss Perdita Darby.” Ambrose grins mischievously.

  • What do you do for a living?

Answer: “I’m an English gentleman. It’s a rather easy job, I simply collect the earnings on my family’s estates and invest them to continue the function and the support of the estate.”

  • What is your greatest fear?

Answer: “Losing Alexandra. I lost her, for a time and it was my worst living nightmare. She is the only that matters to me. I live and breathe just to be with her.” He clears his throat and his eyes mist slightly. “A life without her isn’t life at all.”

Praise for Absolute Trust:
“With an action-filled plot riddled with suspense and tension, Drake’s latest in her True Heroes series is the best one yet.  Steady pacing, engaging storytelling and genuine, vulnerable characters (coupled with the endearing heroic dogs that protect and love them) make this romance shine.” ~ RT Book Reviews

Excerpt from Absolute Trust:

Between one moment and the next, he was right there next to her, kneeling so they were face to face. She let out the air in her lungs in a rush, not sure of what she wanted to do or what he was planning to do. She parted her lips but didn’t say anything, didn’t want to put another question out there for him to address before he answered the one she really wanted to know.

Because she was hoping he was here for her—not his childhood friend—but for the very adult version of her who’d been waiting for him all this time.

Faster than she could react, his lips caught hers. The contact rushed through her in a lightning shot of surprise. Years of bottled-up frustration bubbled up and she leaned into him with a soft gasp.

And then he pulled back and she was left trying to catch her breath.

Slowly, carefully, he slid his arms around her back and under her knees. He cradled her against his chest and tucked her head under his chin. Circled as she was in his embrace, he held her close. He pressed his lips against her hair.

“That was too close yesterday, Sophie.” His voice was low, gruff, and almost cracked with emotion. “The thought of losing you just about killed me.”

I chasedbegged, talked Piper Drake into asking her character, Sophie, what she thinks about being in a book.

Thanks for joining It’s All About the Romance today, Sophie!

Character Interview:

Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?

Sophie: No! Then again, I never thought I’d come that close to being blown up with a car bomb either.

What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?

Sophie: Ooh. Tough choice. I’ve got some good lines in dialog but I wouldn’t give up the romance for anything. ❤

What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?

Sophie: I love cooking for the people in my life. Family, friends, loved ones. I’m even coming up with recipes for healthy treats for the dogs at Hope’s Crossing Kennels.

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

Sophie: I’m very happy with the romance aspect! The suspense part of romantic suspense definitely made things more interesting than I ever guessed my life would be, but I wouldn’t give that up either.

Do you like the way the book ended?

Sophie: Absolutely. No spoilers. 😉

By Terri-Lynne Defino

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
BLURBS:
THE CRUSH
In the first of Heather Heyford’s new series, set in Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine country, the grape isn’t the only source of intoxication . . .
A Perfect Pairing
Juniper Hart has her dream job—or rather, her dream job has her. Under Junie’s management, the winery her late father started is finally getting noticed. But she’s lonely, deep in debt, and overwhelmed with work. Even if she had time to date, the only men she meets are smug, stemware-breaking hotshots like Lieutenant Manolo Santos, whose good looks and smooth charm don’t half make up for the sour taste he leaves on Junie’s palate.
After years as an army engineer and a childhood in a restaurant kitchen, Manolo can see Junie’s winery is about to go sideways—and he’s bursting with ideas to help. Except Junie’s far too magnetic for comfort. He left New Jersey to escape becoming one more Santos man shackled to a captivating woman and a failing family business. But in the misty hills of Oregon, with a sip of supple pinot on his tongue, pulling away is the last thing he wants to do . . .
WAKING SAVANNAH
Bitterly, Connecticut, has been a haven for a woman shattered by painful memories—until a handsome stranger appears and threatens to awaken the ghosts of her past…
For the last eleven years, Savannah Callowell has led a peaceful existence in Bitterly. As the owner of an old farm, she’s mostly kept to herself, not daring to let anyone get too close. None of her neighbors know that she’s haunted by tragedy, and she’s done everything possible to escape her ghosts. She thinks she’s succeeding, until her new foreman shows up—and he’s far from being the college kid she was expecting…
A worldly former professor, Adelmo Gallegos has his own reasons for wanting to hide out on Savvy’s farm, and he isn’t about to share them with anyone, not even his enticing new boss. Still, Ade can’t help himself, the more time he spends with Savannah, the more he longs to lure her out of her protective shell. But how can he convince her that opening her heart is the only way to heal? Especially since he too has secrets he’s unwilling to share? Only when the past catches up with them may they be able to free themselves of it…
EXCERPT:
The Crush
A pang of empathy hit him. “Don’t worry, Buttercup.” He crooked a knuckle under her chin. “Just wait till I get finished with this place. . . .”
That one square inch of skin fused them together like a magnet. His feet stepped closer of their own accord until the toes of his boots bumped hers.
Her lips relaxed and parted. He scrutinized every inch of her face, seeking fault . . . justification to quell his growing desire. It was true. Junie wasn’t a conventional beauty. Her features were a tad too strong, and freckles from working outside sprinkled her nose. But with no makeup diverting attention from them, her irises shone like sapphires. Even under the glaring summer sun, her naked skin was poreless, her cheeks downy as peach fuzz. She was like an organic fruit, imperfect on the surface but better for you in the ways that counted.
His body stiffened with lust. But this was no run-of-the-mill at- traction. An undercurrent of danger ran through it. His heart pounded like it did the moment his CO announced, “Operation mobile” unexpectedly and he knew all of his skills were about to be tested to the limit. At moments like that—when a man was never closer to death—he never felt more alive.
His fingers spread to cup her jaw possessively. He tipped her head back, sending her Ducks cap tumbling backward onto to the ground. Slowly, slowly his head descended until only inches sepa- rated their lips. His own jaw tightened with the effort of restraint. It took every ounce of self-control he had not to throw caution to the wind, rip that baggy white suit right off, and lay her down in the mid- dle of the vineyard in broad daylight. If she were any other woman . . .
I’m honored and excited to have Lauren on the blog today. She brought Ashton Post along for a visit. Let’s see what he has to say 🙂
Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?
  • “I never really have thought about my life ending up in a book, but I suppose I have gotten into enough scrapes that a tale or too might be worthwhile.” Ashton chuckles as he smoothes out the cloth of his trousers.
What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
  • “My favorite scene…” Ashton grins devilishly. “Is where I trick Rosalind, er, that is to say, the heroine, into marrying me. She’s very competitive and I desperately wanted to woo her, but I knew she wouldn’t let me do it so easily. So I convinced her that if she played a game of chess with me, and lost, she would have to marry me.” He still grins. “I made it a game of strip chess, each time she lost a pawn, she had to remove a piece of clothing. You can only imagine what an enjoyable experience that was, and she stripped me out of my clothes too. It was only natural we ended up in bed after that.” Ashton’s cheeks are a little red, but he smiles smugly. “Best decision I ever made, to play strip chess with that Scottish lass.”
What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?
  • “Well, that’s easy enough to answer, I tend to be heavily involved in my business affairs, as does my wife. It’s one of the things I love about her. She’s so like me and we have such common interests. But truth be told, of late my mind has been more preoccupied with tracking down Sir Hugo Waverly, he’s a villain you see, the one man who has set out to destroy my life and the lives of my dearest friends, The League of Rogues. I’ve lost many a sleepless night trying to anticipate his next moves so I can protect those I love.” His eyes darken and his lips purse in a firm line.
Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?
  • Ashton’s face is now very red and he rakes a hand through his ice blond hair. His blue eyes sparkle a little. “I don’t suppose any man would readily agree to admit to being pleased at being in the romance genre of literature. Lurid novels full of sensual tales and villains and loves that last a life time…On second thought, I rather like such stories. Perhaps I don’t mind after all.” He winks.
Do you like the way the book ended?
  • Ashton considers this carefully. “I certainly enjoyed ending up with Rosalind, my wife, but the epilogue was rather unsettling. My friends and I were able to rescue my wife, but the villain, Sir Hugo escaped with a packet of letters we could have used to destroy him in London society. We had only one letter left and my friends and I, the League of Rogues, voted to burn the letter five to two. It was to protect my wife, you see, her father had helped the villain murder some Scottish lords who were involved in an uprising against the English and it would have ruined her life if the news of her father’s involvement came out. The League made a sacrifice for the sake of my wife and for that I’m eternally grateful, but I fear what Hugo has in store for us now that we no longer have proof of his villainy.” Ashton’s gaze turns distant as though he’s seeing the dark gloom upon the horizon and he shivers.
Blurb:
Struggling writer Phoebe Ryan abandons her southern roots and heads to New York, determined to leave her nightmarish past behind…
She was not expecting to meet a famous rock star, or to be coerced into ghostwriting his autobiography. But she tries to maintain focus on her dream of becoming an author, despite the attraction she feels for the sexy rocker, not to mention the baggage that comes with him.
Julian Bale’s world was shattered one drunken night, and it almost ruined him…
Weighed down by guilt, he blames himself for an accident he could’ve prevented. He will play the game, but swears his hot little ghostwriter will never get that story out of him. As much as he wants her, if he has to choose between his dream and hers, it’s no contest.
Phoebe and Julian give in to a forbidden attraction, and their public romance risks both their lives…
An obsessive fan is on the loose and now that the secret’s out, it’s made them both targets. The psychotic stalker is determined to have Julian for herself, even if she has to reveal their sordid pasts and eliminate Phoebe to do it.
He lives for fame. She lives to hide. Obsession lives to ruin them both.
Cora Kenborn writes romantic suspense novels with strong heroines, complex alphas, harrowing danger, and snappy banter. She is the author of the rock star stalker series, Lords of Lyre but refuses to be pigeon holed into one specific genre. She loves delving into the twisted mind of a dark villain as well as giggling while writing rom-com banter.
Cora lives in Eastern North Carolina and is a true Southern girl, growing up on sweet tea, front porches, and the simple life. She says “y’all,” “fixin’ to,” and should you deserve it, will “bless your heart.” She’s the proud mother three hyperactive and occasionally adorable children, and the wife of a husband who tolerates her chaotic writer’s cave.
Although reading is her passion, she can usually be found watching true crime shows and crafting inspiration for twisted new tales. Cora admits to being a horrible cook, an even worse baker, and believes she’s more dangerous with a hot glue gun than any weapon on earth. Oh, and she and autocorrect are mortal enemies.
The coiled body behind me tensed, ready to detonate. Whoever defended me could hold his own, but I could still take everybody out with one flick of the wrist. Chivalry felt warm and fuzzy but I learned a long time ago that one hundred and fifty volts felt electric and twitchy.
Turning my chin to the side, I whispered on an exhale, “It’s fine, I’ve got this.”
A low laugh against my neck curled my toes.
“You so don’t got this.” His chest rumbled as a strong hand ran skilled fingers around my hair. I tilted my chin, watching his eyes harden. “You’re up my ass, shit-for-brains. Don’t ever touch what’s mine.” He shifted his lips against my ear. “Right, baby?”
One suitor tested my patience, but two pushed my limit. I opened my mouth to tell him off when he stole the moment and pressed his lips against mine. Resisting, I murmured veiled threats as he pulled me toward him. The impromptu kiss dissolved into failed waves of aggression, and I inexplicably responded to him. Before I knew it, I’d wrapped my arms around his neck.
After a few heartbeats of kissing a complete stranger, I finally regained what dignity I had left, shoved his chest, and faced him with fire blazing in my eyes. He snickered and waved as my aggressor stalked off. Shooting him a death glare, I reached for my drink. After scanning for witnesses, I brought it to my lips and drained it.
“Thirsty?” He smirked.
“What the hell was that?”
He snatched the drink out of my hands, giving me a wink before tipping it back for the last drop. “You weren’t exactly pushing me away. Besides, I just saved your ass. Heath Vaughn was inches from having a hand up that thing you call a dress.”
“I didn’t ask for your help!” I bit back. “I don’t even know who the hell you—wait, who?”
“Somebody had to step in or you’d have spent the night in jail with that concealed, illegal shit in your purse. You’re telling me you didn’t know that was Vaughn? Maybe because we haven’t time-warped back to his 1995 five minutes of fame.” He walked past me with a smirk plastered across his face.
 Struggling to catch up with him, I grabbed his shoulder in disbelief. “That’s a joke, right?”
“Afraid not. Vaughn in the flesh, and apparently in the sauce too. Why do you care so much what he thinks?” He eyed me curiously, his jade-green eyes knocking me breathless.
Finally allowing myself a full look at him, I quickly averted my eyes before he could see my racing pulse reflected in them. Chaotic chocolate spiked hair pointed in every direction and hinted at a carefully constructed morning-after look. A small silver earring caught flashes of light in the darkness and tattoos decorated each uncovered arm.
Remembering to breathe became a chore.
“Because I’m screwed!” I shouted, frantically waving my phone. “My boss is already pissed at me, and I was supposed to meet Vaughn here for an interview, and—why am I telling you this?”
“Calm down.” He grinned, revealing a deep dimple in his left cheek. “Look, the dude’s so far tanked he won’t remember he was here, much less you were. Give me your phone.”
“I’m not giving you my phone. I don’t even know you.”
Rolling his eyes, he snatched my phone out of my hands. “Didn’t stop you from making out with me, did it?” He scanned the email I’d been checking all night. Typing furiously, his lips curved upward and he handed it back. “All fixed.”
“What did you do?” Thankfully, previous defense training taught me to never label emails with personal information. In the darkness, he’d never scroll back far enough to know my name.
“Why must you question brilliance?” he countered with a sigh. “You sent him an email concerned for his safety since he never showed for your interview. You waited but had to leave because you actually work for a living. You’d love to reschedule since you’re such a huge fan and were disappointed at the missed opportunity to hear all about his crap-ass reality show, since I assume that’s all he would’ve wanted to talk about.”
I could’ve kissed him—if I hadn’t already.
“You’re an evil genius.”
“So I’ve been told.”
Deadly Alliance
by Kathleen Rowland
Genre: romantic suspense
Finbar Donahue, former Army Ranger, walked on the wild side in Iraq, but now he lives in the shadows. After his evasive partner, Les, was shot in a random drive-by, Finn discovers cash is siphoned monthly. He fights to keep his investment company afloat. When the late partner’s girlfriend, Amy Kintyre, applies for his bookkeeping job, Finn suspects she knows about his company drain and hires her.
Amy needs a nine-to-five with free evenings and weekends to get her fashion design business back on track. She unearths Les’ s secret bank account and alerts Finn. Freezing of the money laundering account sets off havoc within an Irish gang. Amy witnesses a gang fight between a brutal ISIS fundraising organization and the Irish. Desperate to escape a stalker’s crosshairs, she seeks refuge with Finn. As danger heats up, sparks fly hotter.
Interview—Finn and Amy
Let’s interview the hero of Deadly Alliance,  Finbar Donahue.
  1. Nickname: Finn. My full name is Finbar Michael Donahue.
  2. Job: I own my own investment company, but who’s the chickenshit stealing money from me? My goal is to find the thief.
  3. Level of schooling: B.A. in finance, former Army Ranger. That was when I targeted a known enemy. Believe me, it’s harder now.
I’ve got a few questions for the heroine, Amy Kintyre.
  1. What’s your dream job? I want to get my sportswear design business back on track. A few days ago a buyer phoned me and gave me an opportunity to present my line.  I need a nine-to-five with evenings and weekends off to sew mockups.
  2. Is that why you applied for Finbar Donahue’s bookkeeping job? Yes, but I have a huge problem.   Last night I found a sketchy bank account belonging to my late boyfriend, Les.  He and Finn were partners.
  3. Would you enjoy working for Finn? No, but there aren’t many job openings in Lake Arrowhead.
Short excerptAmy’s first day working for Finn
Hours later, Finn straightened his spine as he listened to his new bookkeeper order Rosenberg around with the authority of an Army lieutenant. She spoke with confidence from her chair and waited for answers with intensity. Somehow she came across larger than her delicate self.
“Brad,” his pretty war buddy said, “I’ll need your password to access activity-to-date.” Her attitude wasn’t for show. Her curiosity propelled her to the depths of the drain. Heaven help those who lurked there.
“Sure thing.” Brad blew out a breath and scribbled his password on a sticky note. Handing it to her, he bent to her level.
She said, “I apologize for causing chaos.”
“No apology necessary.” Brad asked, “What are you working on?”
Jumping in, Finn said, “Comparisons, Rosenberg, that’s what she’s working on.” Unholy as she’d undoubtedly turn out to be, at the moment they were forged in combat. “Give her your full support.”
“Absolutely. Consider me your scaffold,” Rosenberg said, accepting his fate. “Excuse me, won’t you? I’m running payroll.”
Finn liked his head accountant. He was solid. Dependable. Not creative, but his easy-going manner was soothing. “Payroll. You’re a masochist.”
Amy smiled, and her crystal-green gaze sought his. She found his comment amusing. Her professional attire included a gray satin blouse tucked into a herringbone skirt. When she moved, her layered, dark-blonde hair settled into a sleek flip over her shoulders.
Amy’s bending and reaching, as she took control of her four-by-four cubicle, was damn compelling. She found a rhythm with a handy notepad beside her computer. Using Brad’s password, she turned sideways to open files. Attractive summed up her symmetrical profile and creamy complexion.
For a long while, getting hot and heavy had not been on his mind. Her envelope gave him concrete evidence to bring to the sheriff and eased his tension. As she brushed tresses off her face, he wanted to nibble on her ear.
Amy packed her lithe frame with succulent curves. He enjoyed observing her ample bust which required high-performance support. He’d like to see those globes running free. He’d never considered her as dating material. Timing was off. When she started dating Les, he was hooking up with Miss California. Now it was too late. She worked for him. Hands off. Finn liked women—lots of women, all women, in all shapes and sizes and ethnicities as long as they met the enthusiasm requirement. He hadn’t tested this, but she was off-limits for another reason. He didn’t intend to put her through another relationship leading to nowhere.
Finn kept things loose. A woman in his bed but not in his life was what he often said. There hadn’t been that either.  Why was she looking at him like that?
BOOK SYNOPSIS
Winner BooksGoSocial Best Book 2015.
They hailed her “Liberty,” but she was free only to obey—or die.
Betrayed by her father and sold as payment of a Roman tax debt to fight in Londinium’s arena, gladiatrix-slave Rhyddes feels like a wild beast in a gilded cage. Celtic warrior blood flows in her veins, but Roman masters own her body. She clings to her vow that no man shall claim her soul, though Marcus Calpurnius Aquila, son of the Roman governor, makes her yearn for a love she believes impossible.
Groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps and trapped in a politically advantageous betrothal, Aquila prefers the purity of combat on the amphitheater sands to the sinister intrigues of imperial politics, and the raw power and athletic grace of the flame-haired Libertas to the adoring deference of Rome’s noblewomen.
When a plot to overthrow Caesar ensnares them as pawns in the dark design, Aquila must choose between the Celtic slave who has won his heart and the empire to which they both owe allegiance. Knowing the opposite of obedience is death, the only liberty offered to any slave, Rhyddes must embrace her arena name—and the love of a man willing to sacrifice everything to forge a future with her.
Excerpt:
The door shut with a terrifying clang.
“Sir!” She clutched the cold bars, failing to bleed the raw panic from her tone.
The guard paused with the key in the lock.
A hundred questions clamored for release. Every one started with, “Why?
He frowned as if trying to discern what she’d asked. She wasn’t sure herself. “Why the lock?”
’Twould do, for a start. She nodded.
He scrunched one shoulder. “Lanista Jamil’s orders.” He twisted the key. The lock engaged with a loud click. “For all warriors—gladiators. And you, Gladiatrix.” He withdrew the key, hooked the ring on his belt, and stepped away.
“May I know your name, sir?” It felt ungodly strange asking that of a captor, but she hoped to reclaim a hint of humanity in this inhumane place into which the gods had thrust her.
“Vederi,” he said without breaking stride.
He had disappeared from sight before she realized he hadn’t bothered to ask her name.
So much for humanity.
She sank onto the cot, head in hands and heedless of the straw poking her thighs through the mattress’s canvas cover, and sobbed out all the rage, fear, despair, and grief that had harried her for the past fortnight, feelings pride had forbidden her to show the soldiers or the slaver or her new owner or his servants or even that pampered Roman—especially him—denying them all the chance to wield those emotions against her. Pain as visceral as a blade’s thrust sliced into her gut. She dropped to her knees and pressed her cheek to the wall, painting it with her tears and pounding the cool slate with the heel of her hand.
“Da, how could you!”
Each futile thump knelled like another nail driven into the coffin housing the remains of her freedom.
“Da!”
Character interview of Rhyddes, heroine of LIBERTY:
Thank you for visiting us today. We understand that you have quite a tale to tell. Let’s start with a few questions about you, and then you can tell us about the book.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am Rhyddes ferch Rudd, which in your tongue means Freedom daughter of Red. The blood of ancient Celtic warriors flows in my veins, though I am a farmer’s daughter by the circumstance of my birth.
How did you first meet your writer?
My bones were discovered by some men and women of her era, almost two millennia after I was laid to rest. Because of the wealth of gladiator-themed grave goods buried with me, these people surmised that I must have been a popular gladiatrix. But it was Kim Headlee who unearthed the details of my story for all to read.
Do you sneak into your writer’s dreams?
Most certainly, though oftentimes I find the realm quite crowded with many other folk with whom I am not acquainted.
Did you ever think that your life would end up in a book?
What is a book?
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would have a tighter rein upon my tongue, which often buys me more trouble than I can afford.
We’d love to hear about your setting. Where and when is it and what makes it special?
My life spans much of the reign of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, one of a very few men ever to claim that title who did not abuse his power for personal gain. When my lover Aquila came to me with news that this man was in danger, I could see the loyalty and respect—and concern—in Aquila’s eyes, and for that reason alone I chose to help him protect his sovereign, even though I cared not who ruled and who died in that gods-cursed empire.
Tell us about your journey. What are your goals and what obstacles stand in your way?
More than anything—even more than my freedom—I yearn to be Aquila’s equal. As a foreign slave in an empire where citizenship stands paramount, where an arena fighter such as I can only be considered the equal of other gladiators, actors, undertakers, and whores, this goal seems impossibly remote. Aquila has declared that he would renounce his aristocratic status, wealth, and power for me, but I cannot in good conscience allow him to destroy himself on my account.
And yet the gods have granted the impossible to other mortals. I pray that I am worthy to receive such a boon from them, for surely divine assistance is the only way for Aquila and I to bridge the social chasm that separates us from a lasting future together.
Without revealing too much, what is your favorite scene in the book and why?
While fighting in the bowels underneath the massive Flavian Amphitheater, better known to you as the Colosseum in Rome, I chanced upon the bestiary. My odious owners were unfortunate enough to be there too. I am certain the tiger enjoyed the hunt, especially its conclusion, though I daresay I enjoyed it even more—even though it placed me in peril of my life. I shall leave it for you to imagine the details of what I witnessed in that dark, dank labyrinth and beyond.
Do you like the way the book ended?
Does a cygnet enjoy shedding its scruffy plumage to become a sleek adult swan? Of course it does; don’t be an asinus!
Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?
If I understand your meaning correctly, you refer to the telling of another tale. My beloved brother Owen shall be the focus of such a tale, along with the woman whom he is destined to rescue, love, and marry—despite the fact that her people and ours are blood enemies.
Did you help your writer come up with the title or do you know how this title was chosen?
The title of my tale is Liberty, the word in your language that translates to the Latin word Libertas, my arena name, which I adopted since Rhyddes is too difficult for the Romans’ stiff tongues.
Thank you, Rhyddes, for stopping by and letting us get to know you.
And thank you for taking the time to converse with a lowly gladiatrix-slave. I earnestly pray the association shall not bode ill for the preservation of your social status.
Ruins Discovery
Blurb
Anthropology grad student Kate Ferguson and Paul Rodriguez are in the steamy jungles of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Dark secrets lurk around Paul, locked in the shaman stone he wears. They beckon especially to Kate who reads psychic impressions left in objects. Paul’s search for answers leads them and Dr. Juan Vasquez from the Museo National de Antropologia in Mexico City into the jungles of Mexico, the heights of Machu Picchu, and the art world of Lima and beyond.
When Paul launches out on his own, leaving Kate in Juan’s care, the anthropologists follow, hoping to reach Paul before old enemies from his past with murder on their minds find and kill him.
But the journey reveals disturbing answers and hidden secrets about Paul and Juan and a dark legacy for Paul’s heir. Kate is the key to the answers but finds herself very unsure where to place her trust.
Excerpt
Kate wasn’t sure what awakened her. Had it been the clatter of a lizard across the wood floor of the inn? Or had it been a snatch of disturbing dream that only vanished upon awakening? She stirred under the thin sheet covering her sweating body. As she rolled onto her back, the yards of mosquito netting swathed over the bedposts filled her vision in the dim light. Thin, gauzy, and delicate—how like bridal veiling it looked! But it was deceptive—not only did it protect her from flying pests, but it trapped air so well, breathing became a chore. Kate began to wonder if the netting, like a giant web, had not trapped her, too, to be offered up as sacrifice to a primal god like those just outside the window.
She shivered even in the muggy heat and squeezed her eyes shut, trying to keep memory from breaking into reality. But images leaked out—images of a blood-drenched stone, a bird figure, and an obsidian knife.
Kate reached across the pillows for Paul, needing to feel his healing presence. Her hand found only heavily starched muslin, coarse under her fingertips.
“Trista?” he called out through the trees.
No answer.
“I’m Jenny’s brother. It’s safe.”
He called to her several more times and then started back to his car to gather supplies to hike a mile or two farther to try to find more evidence of her presence. The swish of a branch behind him caught his attention. Whoever was hiding had emerged.
Relief turned to caution as Trista walked out of the jungle with a layer of mud covering her and a handgun aimed at his head.
“Trista?”
She didn’t speak. Her eyes remained focused on him, and her legs seemed poised to take off at the slightest threat.
“Are you hurt?” he asked.
Hovering in the area between the road and the forest, she shook her head. “You’re Jenny’s brother?”
Her voice sounded stronger than her faltering body appeared. Some of the mud that covered her looked more like blood that had dried on her shirtsleeves and part of her pants.
“Yes. I’m Dane O’Brien.”
“What’s Jenny’s middle name?” Her eyebrows furrowed as they had in the pictures.
“She doesn’t have one.”
She took a tentative step forward. She observed Dane’s movements and fixed her eyes on his like a panther ready to pounce. “What’s her favorite drink?”
“Chocolate milkshakes. Or a margarita if the bar carries fresh limes.”
The tension in her face melted away. She pointed the gun to the ground and walked over to him. His arms opened automatically—after all, the woman had been through hell. She probably needed a hug or a shoulder to cry on.
She crossed her arms over her chest, the gun dangling from her hand. Her breathing pattern switched from a heavy sigh to a shivery exhale. He put his arms down and observed her.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded. “I’ll survive.”
“Let me rephrase. Do you need medical attention?”
“No.”
“Where are the men who took you from the village?”
“Dead.”
“You killed them?”
She nodded. Her gaze dropped to the ground. Most people never recovered from such a nightmare. Yet she’d not only lived through the ordeal, she emerged from the jungle healthy and armed.
Impressive.
He’d placed the odds against her, but now that he saw her in person, he’d have changed his bet. He approached her with caution. Her finger rested just outside the trigger, in a position a skilled shooter would feel comfortable with.
She peered up at him. “I’m glad you’re here. I didn’t know how I’d get down from the mountain. Is Jenny all right?”
“Worried about you.”
“What about Natalia?”
“I don’t know anything about her, except she’s probably alive thanks to you. Did they hurt you?” He placed a calming hand on her shoulder and slipped the gun out of her hand.
“No.” She eyed the weapon, but didn’t reach for it. Not that she’d be capable of taking it back from him.
“I’ve been listening to the group’s radio all night. They’re coming back. For me.” A tear rolled down her cheek. She ignored it and looked toward the hut. “I didn’t mean to kill them.”
“Kill or be killed.” He urged her toward the Land Cruiser with a soft hand still on her shoulder, trying to ease the wretched emotions that would brand her view of the world forever—the same emotions that tortured his soul every night. “You survived a kidnapping by two moronic men. Don’t feel guilty.”
“You’d have killed them?”
More than killed them. That’s why he hid away in an office now. If anyone had threatened to rape a young girl in his presence, he would have flayed their skin and stuffed it down their throats before ripping their hearts out. “I wouldn’t have been as merciful as you.”
Dane O’Brien agreed to a character interview with us today! Let’s see what he has to say:
Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?
Government assassins are not supposed to draw attention to themselves. I have no idea how the hell Forand learned about my former occupation, but you can bet I will be having a little heart to heart with her about her sources.
What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
Romance is always preferable to violence, especially where the people I love can get hurt. I never wanted to reenter any occupation where a gun was required, although I’d gladly head into a war zone to meet Trista again. I’m lucky too, because she can hold her own against people shooting at our heads. She’s not quite as accurate as I am, but she’s damn close.
What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?
I like mountain biking and surfing. In fact, I just returned from Costa Rica. The mountains there are breathtaking, and the beaches are perfect.
Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?
I would have preferred being placed in a contemporary romance. I’d meet Trista, we’d fall out over whether I was going to bankrupt her business, and the rest of the book would be hot sex. The one major sex scene in this book is not reflective of my actual prowess in bed (or couch). Blame it on Simon.
Do you like the way the book ended?
I never wanted to end up working in a position that could get me or my family shot at any moment. Finding the woman of my dreams, however, made everything worthwhile.
Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?
For some reason, Forand hinted around at a relationship between my sister and one of Simon’s mercenaries. Forand better think twice before getting the two of them together.
Marketing Exec’s Widow
Letting go and rebuilding a life comes at a price.
Having come to terms with losing her husband, Jennifer is ready to move on with her life, but she faces opposition from her friends, in-laws, and brother-in-law, who see himself as her future husband. None of them know of Jen’s marital problems and she is afraid of their reaction when they learn she has a date for Friday night?
Hagan Chaney is not anything like Craig. He tempts Jen into the future but is she willing to give love another chance after the heartache she faced the 1st time around.
Excerpt –
“God, you must think I’m awful.”
“Not even in the ballpark as to what I think about you. Because I know you would never have said yes to a night out with me if you’d been happy in your marriage.”
His words hit her like a fist to the face and her head snapped backward, striking the wooden partition between the booths. Wow, how could he have guessed the truth when so many people who knew her hadn’t?
She closed her eyes and searched for an answer. For so long, she’d kept her emotions bottled inside, not allowing anyone to see the loneliness or heartache her unhappy marriage had caused. What now? Lie, or admit the truth?
The vinyl cushion squeaked, and a hand touched her shoulder, pulling her from her stupor. Hagan slipped in beside her, his thigh bumped hers and his arm slid along the back of the seat. In the space of a few seconds, his large athletic body blocked her escape from the confining booth.
Nerves pulsed in an agitated rhythm. She couldn’t sit still, and opened her mouth to tell him to back off, but the thin lines of concern marring his brow killed the comment.
“Hey, there’s no reason to get upset.” He cupped a hand over her shoulder and drew her close. “I’m happy you said yes.”
Jolted by his sudden nearness, she exhaled, and then fought to draw air back into her lungs. His crisp, masculine scent acted like a seductive lure, and she had to fight the urge to bury her nose in the curve of his neck.
Excerpt:
As they raced through the trees, Nicholai caught glimpses of her fine figure. A dark short sleeved shirt fitted her body, accentuating her firm breasts. Long, elegant legs couldn’t hide beneath the short skirt that accentuated her hips. Black gloves covered her hands, extending mid-way up her forearms. Each time he spotted her, he learned more about the female he pursued. She intrigued him, and he intensified the hunt.
He closed the distance in a matter of moments. The excitement of the chase and the thrill of the catch were like a drug in his system. He craved more.
As he took her down, he expected softness and curves. Instead, her delicate skin covered a muscular build that took him by surprise. His beast responded, eager to couple with this strong, virile female. At the last moment he spun, using his own body to cushion their fall.
Ahhhh. Her cry rang in his ears and burrowed down into his soul. A sense of masculine pride and possessiveness filled his chest, a need so raw he couldn’t deny its power over him. A thin veil of red blurred his vision, the power of the full moon on the summer solstice taking its toll on his psyche.
The spongy earth, covered in moss and small bits of grass, provided the perfect blanket of softness. Cradling her in his arms as he lay on his back, he gazed upon her masked face for the first time.
Vibrant blue eyes encased with long lashes stared back at him through the holes in her disguise. High cheekbones, flushed from her exertion, were visible beneath the edge of her mask. Although her nose was hidden behind the tip of the material, ruby red lips provided enough details to spark his imagination.
Character interviewed: Prince Nicholai from Unforgettable Lover
Did you ever think that your life would end up being in a book?
Prince Nicholai steps away from his desk. The highly polished oak reflects the light from the sunstones embedded in the cave walls, blinding me with its glare. He places his hand on the back of his chair, his knuckles turning white. “Actually, yes. My life will be recorded in the scriptures, just like all the other kings, past, present, and those yet to come.” A smile crosses his face. “…but that isn’t what you wanted to know, was it?”
I try to swallow, but my throat is too dry. “Umm…I meant in the book I wrote, Unforgettable Lover.”
His eyes gleam and then a loud, raucous laugh bursts from his lips. “Well, at least you gave me a happily ever after.”
What are your favorite scenes in your book: the action, the dialog or the romance?
A smile pulls at the corner of his mouth. “As much as I didn’t want to participate in the Betram ritual, I have to say, meeting Leonna…her honeyed scent, her piercing blue eyes, her naked body sprawled before me…now that is something I will never forget.”
What do you like to do when you are not being actively read somewhere?
A soft chuckle eases from his chest. He shakes his head and rolls his eyes. “I don’t have time to worry about the audience. I fight for my goddess, Alora, to win the battle against the Gossum.” His brow furrows and all traces of his light mood disappear. “You Earthlings have no idea what is at stake. If we lose the battle, you will be enslaved and forced to ship your precious water to Lemuria. You better pray we win.”
I cough… “Umm…next question, then.”
Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?
He closes his eyes and exhales. “I wish she’d make up her mind…paranormal, fantasy, science fiction. Any of those will work, just pick one.”
I cross my legs and squirm in my seat. That last comment was a little too close to home. Moving on…
Do you like the way the book ended?
The skin around his eyes creases and his smile returns. “You gave me my Leonna, and for that, I am truly thankful.”
Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?
He glances at the ceiling, as if studying the sunstones embedded in the porous cave. His lips purse, then his gaze bores into me. “What I’d really like to know is how do things work out for my son…Noeh.”
Now that is something I can’t answer for him. That just wouldn’t be fair. “Noeh has his own book, Untouchable Lover. You should read it sometime.”
He raises his eyebrows, but doesn’t speak. I can’t help the smile that curves my own lips.
What do you do for a living?
“I’m the prince. I lead my kind in battles against our enemy, the Gossum.” He rubs his hand over his face. “I hate this bloody war. Did you know this all started because of a lover scorned?” He blinks. “Of course you did.” He raises an eyebrow. “How could I forget? You’re the author.”
Ok, now I feel uncomfortable under his scrutiny. Thank goodness there’s only one question left.
What is your greatest fear?
The only sound in the room is our breaths. He studies me for a long moment, long enough that a bead of sweat rolls down my neck. “Um, did you hear me?”
“I heard you. I just don’t want to answer.” A tic starts in his jaw.
Guess we’re done. “Thank you, Prince Nicholai, for the interview.”
His smile once again lights up his handsome features. “You’re welcome, Rosalie.”
Thank you!
The peal of the church bells from the abbey tower startled Genevieve. The sound added to her mounting anxiety.
The massive abbey loomed over the stone paved path.  All the nuns were at evening mass.  With a bit of luck her disappearance would go unnoticed for a few more hours. The Abbess would assume she was cleaning the toilets as ordered.
Fear skittered through Genevieve when she turned away from the abbey towards the path leading to town. Nothing stirred.  She hesitated.  Evil emanated from the forest surrounding the abbey. With a shiver, she leaned against the solid oak gates that flanked the abbey’s main path. They had hidden her from detection for the past couple of hours, but how much longer would she be safe?
The mountain shadows grew thicker and closer.
She moved her weight from one leg to the other. They ached from so much standing, but she lacked the strength to return to the gardener’s cottage and wait for Andrew’s arrival as planned. Genevieve closed her tired eyes. The image of old Ryan, slumped dead in his chair in his cubicle, caught life in her mind and made her whole body ripple with fear.
She’d rather wait for Andrew here, outside.
Had he forgotten his promise? What if something terrible befell him during the last three days, or he had changed his mind? Why should he risk all for an ordinary nun?
Had his folks talked him into giving her up, made him see reason? Helping her out of her predicament meant a huge risk for him — losing his family, his friends and his position among his peers. His words echoed in her mind. “I will risk everything for you, even life, if necessary.”
* * * *
“Anne, Anne, wake up. Wake up, please,” the insistent voice whispered next to her ear.  The touch of a hand, on her shoulder, startled Anne.
She opened her eyes, still half between sleep and reality. Her gaze stopped on a stranger, a woman, by her side.
The moon’s pale face, the only light, filtered through a small gap in the tent’s entrance; yet the stranger’s whole body emanated a kind of soft ray, a yellowish halo making her figure and face easy to discern.
A long, dark robe, similar to those worn by nuns in monasteries centuries ago, covered her body. No traditional headdress covered the woman’s red hair, which fell loosely over her shoulders in long, heavy tendrils and continued down her chest and back.
Anne stood up and studied the intruder with open curiosity. The stranger’s wax pale face looked corpse like. Anne opened her mouth to ask her who she was. She looked Anne straight in the eyes, placed her forefinger on her lips and whispered, “Hush, come. Follow me.”
Anne’s eyes widened.
The woman, moving away from the sleeping bag, appeared to glide above the ground. Her bare feet didn’t make a sound.
As if hypnotized, Anne followed the illuminated silhouette heading into the forest, without questioning her own actions.
An onrush of sensations unfamiliar to her followed. Dizziness and a malevolent feeling of unreality suffocated her. The presence of evil, creeping up and enveloping her, became almost palpable. Her throat turned dry, and she gasped for air.
Character interview -Genevieve
  1. Please, have a seat. Make yourself comfortable Miss…
“Genevieve. My name is Genevieve, but Sister Clementa, the Abbess,  and some of her followers call me The witch.”
  1. Tell me, Genevieve, where are you living?
 Genevieve ( a small sigh escapes her lips. Then she shrugs) “Well, for the moment I reside at St. Mary’s Abbey. On top of a mountain in Britain, in the…cursed forest.”
  1. Do you have any schooling?
Genevieve  (nods and pats and invisible crease of her dress) “Kind  Old Bertha, who took care of me after my family perished, taught me to read and write. Not only English but also Latin. And, most important, she taught me how to prepare healing potions from plants and herbs. Perhaps that’s why the Abbess hates me so much. A peasant girl of the 13th century is dangerous if she knows more than her superiors, I think.”
  1. What are your worst fears or nightmare?
Genevieve (throws a shy look around her. She shivers and her voice is small) “I fear the cursed forest. This forest is responsible for what happened to my family. My father’s odd behavior, the death of my siblings. All the evil that lurks in it.
My nightmare – the Abbess, sister Clementa, who threatens me all the time with sending me to the stake. I can’t understand why she wants me out of the way.”
  1. Is it anything that you secretly desire?
Genevieve (blushes and wrings her hands. Then she looks me directly in the eyes. Her voice is strong now. ) “To become Andrew’s wife and grow a family. If his family agrees….If the Abbess lets me go… If God  forgives me for giving up being a nun…..If I escape alive from the forest…. If….”
carmen
Carmen Stefanescu resides in Romania, the native country of the infamous vampire Count Dracula, but where, for about 50 years of communist dictatorship, just speaking about God, faith, reincarnation or paranormal phenomena could have led someone to great trouble – the psychiatric hospital if not to prison.
Teacher of English and German in her native country and mother of two daughters, Carmen Stefanescu survived the grim years of oppression, by escaping in a parallel world, that of the books.
She has dreamed all her life to become a writer, but many of the things she wrote during those years remained just drawer projects. The fall of the Ceausescu’s regime in 1989, and the opening of the country to the world meant a new beginning for her. She started publishing. Poems first, and then prose. Both in English.
Shadows of the Past, paranormal/light romance/light mystery/light horror was released at the end of 2012 by Wild Child publishing, USA.
JEM
Two injured, stubborn souls meet unexpectedly. Will they save each other from their demons or have they been too damaged for too long to see past the pain?
Growing up, all Jem knew was hatred and the pain from his father’s fists. Taunted by the kids at school, he was alone, until a girl with carrot coloured hair sat next to him.
She smiled.
She listened.
She cared.
She was his angel, and he knew he’d love her forever. But Jem’s father hurts him in a way he never expected by taking him away from her.
Now eighteen, scarred inside and out, Jem trusts no one and has worked hard to ensure he’ll never be helpless again. But then he runs into his angel. The only problem is she doesn’t recognize him. Jem needs her to remember him, to show him that their time together meant to her what it did to him. For once in his life he wants to have mattered to someone, to her.
Devon is attracted to the muscular, tattooed, pierced hottie standing by the pub quiz machine. That is, until he punches a guy clean across the bar for daring to touch him. She’s had her fill of violent men and intends to avoid this one at all costs.
Eggcerpt from JEM
I pull back the duvet and try to make as few movements as possible as I crawl in beside her and let the warmth from her body and the duvet envelop me. Her red hair is splayed across my pillow. I reach out and stroke my fingers through the silken strands. My pillowcase isn’t getting washed again. It can smell of her forever so that whenever I lay my head on it, I can pretend she’s with me. Maybe it will be okay to move a little closer. I’m right on the edge of the mattress. If I fall out of bed I’ll wake her. I scoot closer to her, close my eyes and inhale. She smells of roses. Maybe I should get her some flowers. I picture myself holding a bunch of red roses and chuckle to myself. Nah, I’m not the suave type. Maybe I’ll get a rose tattoo to remind me of her scent.
Interview with Jem
  1. Job?
I work at an amusement arcade, fixing the machines when they go wrong, handing out change and that kind of thing. It pays my bills, it’s local and the hours suit me.
  1. Currently residing in…?
Hemsby in Norfolk. I’ve got a trailer right by the sea. There’s nothing like walking along the beach every morning. It keeps me calm.
  1. Level of schooling, or self-taught?
I had to quit school when I was small because my asshole of a father moved us all at the last minute after someone reported him to social services for child cruelty. He never enrolled me in another school. I taught myself all I need to know.
  1. Favorite food?
Don’t have one. I eat to live, I don’t live to eat.
  1. Most important goal?
To get Devon to remember me and love me again. To take care of her and show her that I never forgot her and never stopped loving her.
Excerpt: (from chapter two Shocking Finds)
Marin needed answers. Like why had they been targeted? The parking lot hadn’t exactly been lacking for vehicular violence victim contenders. There had been a group of at least four women, standing by their cars, chatting. If there was a target more deserving of vehicular rage, it had definitely been that group of women. They had finished shopping, and courtesy demanded that their parking spots were to be relinquished as soon as possible. Why not them?
The man—and Marin was only guessing that the driver was a man—had bypassed those without parking lot etiquette and zeroed in on Lindal. If she had continued her slow progress through the parking lot, would Marin be in this horrible room with its beeping monitors and bleached air instead of Lindal.
Staring down at her aunt’s unmoving form, Marin tried to find a place to rest her hand. She needed to touch her. She needed to know that the only person willing to take her in, after the death of her mother, was really here and still alive.
“They will find him, Lindal. He won’t get away with this,” Marin made her vow as quietly as possible, not wanting to disturb Lindal’s recovery.
Glancing up to keep tears from falling from her eyes, Marin noticed something swinging off of Lindal’s oxygen line. “What the…” It looked like a Barbie doll with wings, perhaps six inches tall. The odd little creature wore a loin cloth and sported some overly obvious male attributes. Was it wrong to be checking out the abs of someone no larger than a child’s toy?
His arms tugged and his muscles bunched as he attempted to make a knot in Lindal’s oxygen line. His silver skin tone went beautifully with his tri-colored wings— a mix of light purple, maroon, and gold. The little man didn’t seem to realize that Marin was staring at him.
“Stop,” Marin shouted. Dammit, this was a hospital. She needed to lower her voice. She also needed to go upstairs to the psych ward. Head trauma, shock, or hallucinations¼ something wasn’t right. If she told Lindal about this, her aunt would call her every kind of fool.
Hallucination or not, she grabbed the little man by the wings, pulled him from Lindal’s oxygen line, and tried to speak more calmly. “What do you think you’re doing?”
She finally had her figment’s attention. A striking, though small, pair of lavender eyes glared at her through overly long sandy brown bangs. On closer inspection, she could see that his hair was actually multicolored. It seemed to go from crystal white sand to bronzed gold.
“Well, answer me. What do you think you’re doing?”
“Waiting for you, of course.”
“What are you?” She was losing it. The buzzing in her temples was increasing. And she was now speaking to a figment of her imagination. Yep, she needed to be medicated.
The creature put its tiny fists on narrow hips. “A Sprite, of course. Don’t you know anything? I have my work cut out for me.” Now she was being insulted by her imagination. Great.
“Nope. Too Much,” Marin said and tossed the little man with wings out of the hospital window. She needed coffee. Either that or a large dose of Thorazine. Maybe both.
Now… without further ado… here is Marin Yarthine…
Interviewer: You’ve had quick the introduction to the Fae world, Marin… Can I call you Marin..
Marin (reddened cheeks): Uhh… sure… I mean, that’s what most people call me… Kyland has been call me, Minzet, but I’m pretty sure that’s something just between us since it means Sweet One… but…yeah… Marin would be best.
Interviewer (light chuckle): Great. Well, I nice to finally get to sit down with us… and as the new Princess to the Fae people, with such an odd upbringing… the Fae would love to know a little pit about you… Tell us a little bit about day to day life in the royal world…
Marin: Pfft… Most of the time I think they have the wrong girl… I mean… I was home schooled, and have worked at Finder’s Keepers since I turned 17… for the past four years I have been slipping into Finder’s Trances in order to locate everything from pets to abduction victims… from car keys to family heirlooms… it sounds like important work but really, I mostly had to pull a bunch of information together so that other Finder’s could go out on Mission to locate whatever the client had misplaced…
Interviewer: That sounds like important work to me… also, something that would take a toll on your emotions… do you have someone to cuddle up to at night to help you get through the day???
Marin (Cheeks now flaming red): Kyland… he came out of nowhere and changed my life… and he doesn’t even mind when I accidentally shock him with this new power that has a tendency to get out of control when I’m upset…
Interview: …. (shuffles through questions) … (scoots chair back and grits her teeth)… What goals and hardships do you face… what do you want for the Fae?? I mean… what are your plans to keep the Fae community safe?? (scoots back a little further…)
Marin (head cocked to the side): I’m still learning about the Fae world.. but I would say my goal is to keep as many people safe as I can… (fists clench) … if the evil Fae, those Danshue ********… sorry for my language, but if they would just stop getting in the way, I could learn a little faster… someone needs to stop the Danshue before this community I’m just getting to know dies out…
Sparks light up on Marin’s hands, but Interviewer merely gets a white
Knuckled grip on her set and continues…
Interviewer: One final questions and we will let you get back to your new duties as Princess… Can you tell us what fears you are facing in this new chapter of your life???
Marin: … (Deep Breath…) Lindal… that the woman that pretended to be my only family, that kidnapped me as a child (sparks on her fingertips) … that she will find a way to finish what she started… (more sparks) … that she will find a way to hurt the people I am coming to care about… that she will hurt KYLAND … (small explosion blowing out all the lights)
Interview warily pulls herself up out of the floor, where she dove to avoid flying glass…
Interview(voice shaky) : Alright… I think that’s all we have time for… thanks for stopping by Princess…
Stranger At My Door
by Mari Manning
Genre: Romantic Suspense
The only thing standing between Dinah Pittman and a murderer is a man she’s afraid to trust …
As far as Dinah Pittman is concerned, men can’t be trusted. Especially cops. Her own father was a cop and a convicted felon who stole a small fortune before dying in prison. The best part? No one knows where the money is…and someone is willing to kill off everyone who knows anything about it.
And Dinah is next.
Rafe Morales left the Dallas police force to settle down to a simpler life in the small Texas town of El Royo. Instead, he finds himself protecting an infuriating, tough-as-nails, oh-so-sexy victim—and driving himself crazy with a thoroughly unprofessional desire.
But as the body count rises, Rafe and Dinah must find a way to trust each other…before they both end up dead.
From the book:
The front door rebounded and clipped Rafe’s shoulder. He kicked it closed with his boot before raking his flashlight beam across the unlit entryway. The hall was clear. His heart thumping against ribs, he burst into the living room. His light hit the figure of a woman, and his feet froze. He tilted the beam up and framed Dinah Pittman’s expressionless face.
Most girls would have screamed or hid when he kicked in the door. Not this one. She had balls, he’d give her that.
Her forearm lifted to shield her eyes from the light. “Who are you? What do you want?” She sounded tired. “I already told Teke, I don’t know where the money is.”
Rafe lowered the flashlight and rolled his shoulder to loosen a tight muscle. There were about two dozen abandoned bungalows in this part of town. When he saw a candle flickering in the window, he’d expected a confrontation with teenagers or maybe a squatter.
He stepped into the candlelight. “Officer Morales, ma’am. Got something against electricity?” As soon as the words were out, he regretted them. The pink flyers. She’d needed money to turn on the lights.
Her mouth tightened. “Get out.” Turning to a small table by the window, she gathered up scattered cards, probably her tarot cards. Had she found customers already?
He studied her as he summoned up an appropriate apology. She wore cut-offs and a white T-shirt. His eyes swept down her slim legs to her bare feet and red toenails before he could stop himself. Why were pain-in-the-ass women always hot?
“I didn’t mean to upset you—”
“Don’t flatter yourself.”
“That’s tough to do with you around.”
Her hand stilled for a moment, then returned to its task. “You could have knocked.”
“Sometimes we get squatters in these abandoned houses. They’re more likely to be discouraged by a show of force.”
“I could have been a mass murderer. Aren’t you supposed to call for backup?” She glanced down at his flashlight. “If I was a bad guy with a gun, you’d be dead, Officer Morales.”
“Rafe.”
She’d read him right. He’d tried to pull out his service revolver when he broke down the door, but—predictably—his hand had turned to Jell-O. After two years, he still couldn’t get past the night in Dallas when his beautiful, daring Sam’s luck ran out, and he’d avenged her but failed to live up to his own lofty ideals. So he relied on the element of surprise and big fists.
Gathering up the cards, she set them in a neat stack. “As you can see, I am not a squatter.” Her gaze flickered to his flashlight, then back up to his face. “There’s an empty house about two blocks down if you’re determined to rescue one.”
The corner of his mouth inched up. She’d be a handful…for the right man, which sure as hell wasn’t him. Not anymore. “Thanks for the tip.”
Interview with Dinah Pittman, heroine of Stranger at My Door
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town in Texas. I’ll tell you the name, but it doesn’t matter since no one’s ever heard of it. It’s El Royo. For the first 17 years of my life, I loved it, then a crime destroyed my family, and I couldn’t get away fast enough.
When is your birthday?
I’m 25, so you do the math. I was born on November 1, and my mother, who believed in the stars, painted the night sky at it appeared the day I was born on the ceiling of bedroom.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Pay back the money my father stole.
Rafe Morales, hero of Stranger at My Door
Where did you grow up?
I grew up on Hacienda Osito, which means Little Bear Ranch in Spanish.
Worst fear or nightmare?
I’ve lived through my worst fear – I watched someone I love die before my eyes. Something broke in me that night. Most people call it my nerve. My mother swears it’s my alma, which means soul. Whatever it is, I hope it mends, but I don’t believe I will ever be whole again.
About Mari Manning
Let’s start with the fun stuff. I love small towns, mysteries, quiet men, laughter, old-fashioned spaghetti dinners. I love boots and shopping and jokes and Hershey’s dark chocolate and white wine. I love lots of things. But my first love is reading.
I love to read. Just about anything, but it has to be well-written. I go through periods where I am into historical novels or romance or mystery or history or biography. I never know when my desires will suddenly change.
Now for the writer-ish, official stuff: Mari Manning is the author of several contemporary romances and three romantic suspense novels set in the Texas Hill Country. Stranger at My Door is the first in her A Murder in Teas series. The second, Stranger in My House will be published by Entangled later this year. The third book in the series is Stranger in My Bed. Currently Mari is working on a series of cozy mysteries.
She and her husband live in Chicago.
Boxes For Beds
by
Maryann Miller
BOOK BLURB
The 1960s were a time of peace and love in California, but not so in Hot Springs, Arkansas where the mob still ruled. In Boxes For Beds, babies are being kidnapped, and the local sheriff has to put this case to bed before the bosses come down from Chicago for a big meeting. Sheriff Bates is ruled by the mob, so he does the most expedient thing, arresting Leslie Richards, the new woman in town, even though there’s only thin circumstantial evidence against her. Better for it to be a stranger taking those babies and not one of their own. Leslie has left New York with her daughter, Mandy, hoping to escape from her past and the ruins of a relationship, only to discover that there is little peace for her in Pine Hollow, Arkansas. The only good thing that happens is Ronald showing up one day, hoping to get Leslie’s love back.
EXCERPT
January 1936
“Hush little baby, don’t you cry … ” The plaintive melody whispered in the otherwise resounding silence.
One small candle flickered atop the dust-encrusted chest of drawers, the feeble light unable to dispel the gloom born of the murky darkness. The yellow flame wafted in a sudden draft, casting macabre patterns on a precarious stack of old boxes supported by an intricate network of cobwebs. The pale light briefly touched a figure hunched over an open trunk.
The figure loomed more like a shadow than a real person and reached out a hand to lightly trace the features of the tiny bundle nestled within the trunk’s musty interior.
“Would you listen to me? Singing to a doll-baby just like you was real.”
Wide, unblinking eyes stared back.
“Sometimes I wish … but no. It’s better this way. If you was real, then I’d have to tell you to hush for sure. The Man don’t let me play with no real babies. Says I might hurt ’em. But he don’t know. I can be real gentle. Ain’t my fault those others broke. You ain’t gonna do that are you?”
Silence.
March 6, 1961
Leslie Richards sat on the ground, idly picking at the strands of dry grass beside her. No sign of green yet, not even in Pine Hollow, Arkansas. Not that she really expected it. Early March is still winter whether in Arkansas or New York, but at least the breeze blew a little warmer here. She definitely wouldn’t be sitting on the ground if she were still in New York.
Easing herself against the thick trunk of the old oak, which stretched leafless branches high into a shimmering blue sky, Leslie thought of how her agent had reacted to the news of her impending move. Merrill had stolen the response Leslie had expected from her parents.
“What on earth do you want to leave New York for?” Merrill rolled a well-chewed pencil between her slim fingers, staring at Leslie in frank astonishment.
“You’re the one who keeps telling me a writer should be well-traveled. Let’s just say I’m broadening my horizons.”
“Some podunk town in the South is hardly what I had in mind.”
“That ‘podunk town’, as you so colorfully put it, is part of my heritage. My grandmother was raised there. I can reconnect with my roots.”
“Right. Like that’s been a burning issue in your life.” Merrill flashed one of her lopsided smiles. “I think you’re holding out on me, kid.”
“Oh, Merrill,” The tears Leslie had vowed not to burden her friend with welled in her eyes and spilled unbidden down her cheeks. “Everything’s such a mess. Since Ronald … I can’t think. I can’t work.”
Character Questions for Leslie Richards:
What would you do if you won the lottery?
What a great question. We all fantasize about that, don’t we?  First, I’d buy the biggest, prettiest house in Pine Hollow. Despite all that has happened to me since I came here, I do love this small town and plan to stay. For my friend, Pauline, I’d buy her a larger space for her bookstore/library, and I’d stock it with a ton of books. Of course, I’d also have to put a lot of it away for Mandy’s college fund. Then I’d keep the rest to live on, just in case the writing doesn’t keep paying the bills.
What is your favorite place to visit?
I enjoy going to Hot Springs and visiting one of the bath houses, and I even like going to the track now and then.  And if I won the lottery, maybe I could even place a bet. Or better yet, buy a racehorse and win lots of money from races. While I love my life here, now that things have settled from the arrest and everything, I do like to go back to New York. It’s always great fun to meet my agent somewhere in Manhattan and remember what it’s like to get all dressed up and enjoy the night life. I visit my parents, too, and assure them that Mandy and I are just fine down here in Arkansas. This is a quieter, simpler place, and Mandy is thriving.
Level of Education or self-taught?
Since I had Mandy not long after high school, I never did go to college. And I’m not even sure where the ability to write came from. I always have loved to read, and I started reading children’s books to Mandy. I discovered I enjoyed those books as much as I enjoyed ones for adults, so I started writing those.
What was the most difficult part of your life?
Well, you’d think being arrested for murder might have topped the list, but actually, it does not. Being an unwed mother in the early 60s was much different from what it has been for young girls in later years. There was a stigma attached and people judged me, so I kept to myself. Thank goodness my parents supported me when I decided to keep Mandy, otherwise I would not have been able to manage.  I’m glad that things have changed and girls no longer need to hide like they’ve done something wrong. The worst part of that is the fact that it has always been okay for the guys to have sex. It’s almost a badge of honor or a rite of passage for them, but for women, for too long, it was a badge of dishonor.
What is your goal in life?
Oh, there are so many. First and foremost, I want to do a good job raising Mandy so she can become a confident, educated, and happy adult. I hope that Ronald can be a part of that, but we are still working out some of our past issues. And, of course, I would love to become a best-selling author. I will admit that I am a bit jealous of J.K. Rowling, although I don’t begrudge her. Wow, what a fabulous talent with a magical imagination.
