Today is Remembrance Day in Canada and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. It made me start thinking of our part in the war and all those poor soldiers endured.

This is from Veteran Affairs Canada:

The armistice of November 11, 1918, brought relief to the whole world. Never before had there been such a conflict. For a nation of eight million people Canada’s war effort was remarkable. More than 650,000 men and women from Canada and Newfoundland served — over 66,000 gave their lives and more than 172,000 were wounded. It was this immense sacrifice that lead to Canada’s separate signature on the Peace Treaty. No longer viewed as just a colony of England, Canada had truly achieved nation status. This nationhood was purchased by the gallant men who stood fast at Ypres, stormed Regina Trench, climbed the heights of Vimy Ridge, captured Passchendaele, and entered Mons on November 11, 1918.

Sixty-six thousand lives. Hard to imagine.

About HAUNTED BE THE HOLIDAYS:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Heather Graham comes a new story in her Krewe of Hunters series…

When you’re looking for the victim of a mysterious murder in a theater, there is nothing like calling on a dead diva for help! Krewe members must find the victim if they’re to discover the identity of a murderer at large, one more than willing to kill the performers when he doesn’t like the show.

It’s Halloween at the Global Tower Theatre, a fantastic and historic theater owned by Adam Harrison and run by spouses of Krewe members. During a special performance, a strange actor makes an appearance in the middle of the show, warning of dire events if his murder is not solved before another holiday rolls around.

Dakota McCoy and Brodie McFadden dive into the mystery. Both have a
special talent for dealing with ghosts, but this one is proving elusive. With the help of Brodie’s diva mother and his ever-patient father – who were killed together when a stage chandelier fell upon them – Dakota and Brodie set out to solve the case.

If they can’t solve the murder quickly, there will be no Thanksgiving for the Krewe . . .

Excerpt

“Okay,” he said gently. “You’re convinced the blood was real?”

“You don’t believe me!” she said indignantly.

“No, I believe you. I just want you to think carefully. It is Halloween. You don’t think the young woman was in costume, or the blood might have been faked?” he asked.

The clerk was about twenty-four years old, tiny in height, dark-eyed and dark-haired, with a round, friendly face. Right now, however, her eyes were large, pupils dilated, and she appeared to be frightened.

“Mr. McFadden,” she said. “I’m telling you, I’ve worked here since I got out of high school. I…I know kids at Halloween—and adults at Halloween. This woman…she was crazed. I think she…that she—she ate someone, somewhere.”

“Ate them?” he asked carefully.

“Or drained them of blood. I could smell blood on her—it had that rusting tin kind of smell…”

He did know the smell. He might be a consultant at the moment, and not officially a Krewe agent yet, but he’d been military, he’d been a private eye—and, unfortunately, he’d already been on more than a few murder investigations.

“Oh, I don’t know—she ate someone—someone munched on her neck. There was just so much blood.”

“It could have been fake,” he said gently.

“Not unless she ordered some ‘Eau de Blood’ to go with it! I know costumes and makeup. We’re right by the theater, and,” she added dryly, “I have witnessed Halloween all my life. And at Halloween, there are always people running around in costume—and not just the players. But this…this was real blood.”

“All right, you said she was covered in blood. And it could have been hers. Could she have been hurt somehow?” Brodie asked. “Was there any kind of an injury you could see?”

“Oh, God!” the young clerk said. “I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe she was in real pain. But she was obnoxious—threatening. She wanted opioids. Yes, I mean, I guess that would mean she might be hurt. Her neck was all red—but the blood was all over the costume, too. At a distance, I thought maybe she was doing a just-enjoyed-dinner vampire or something. But when she got closer…there was that smell!”

“And when she got belligerent at the pharmacy counter, you heard her—and walked up and warned her you were going to call the police?” Brodie asked.

Rebecca nodded solemnly.

He glanced quickly at the notes on his cellphone. The woman was young, but as she said, she’d been there several years.  She was a clerk, and an assistant store manager, and she had called in the incident—which might have been a non-incident, not something that would normally involve the FBI.

Except Detective Angus Hilton of the D.C. police was close friends with Jackson Crow, head of the Krewe unit of the bureau. Since Brodie had just picked up Jackson to head to the theater—all who could were gathering for the last children’s and adult Halloween season shows—he had found himself investigating what might have been an addict’s attempt to fulfill a craving.

Halloween—like a full moon—brought out the crazies.

Let the games begin… Exhume by Danielle Gerard #BookReview #Mystery #Thriller

614g7YsyXeL

Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman has finally found a place to belong. As the medical examiner for the San Francisco Police Department, working alongside homicide detective Hal Harris, she uncovers the tales the dead can’t tell about their final moments. It is a job that gives her purpose—and a safe haven from her former life at the hands of an abusive husband. Although it’s been seven years since she escaped that ordeal, she still checks over her shoulder to make sure no one is behind her.

Schwartzman’s latest case is deeply troubling: the victim bears an eerie resemblance to herself. What’s more, a shocking piece of evidence suggests that the killer’s business is far from over—and that Schwartzman may be in danger. In this pulse-pounding thriller from award-winning writer Danielle Girard, a woman must face her worst nightmare to catch a killer.

Biography

My Review

This book gave me chills!

Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman is called upon to investigate a woman’s murder and is shocked by similarities to her own past that she can’t ignore. Is her psychotic ex-husband behind the crime?

Seven years ago, she managed the impossible and escaped the controlling man she’d married too late to save her unborn child, something she’d have to live with forever.

Now he was back.

Let the games begin.

This story is an intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The tension amps up continually and had me gasping more than once!

I questioned Annabelle’s original weakness, for want of a better term, in staying with a man who obviously had no respect for her, but this was later explained with insight into her self-absorbed mother.

I give Exhume 5 lovely kisses- A great start to a crime series!

The Contract Between Heaven and Earth by John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano #PoliticalThriller #NewRelease @HowellWave @gmplano

The CONTRACT between heaven and earth

By John W. Howell & Gwen M. Plano

John Howell is a wonderful member of the blogging community and it is my honor to welcome him and Gwen Plano to my blog. They have big news to share, so I’ll let them take it away 😊

Thank you, Jacquie, for inviting us to join you today. We are so grateful to be featured on your blog alongside your Wounded Hearts series. We are super excited to share a bit about our book with you and your readers.

The Contract

Available on Kindle and Paperback

Kindle priced at $0.99 for the introduction.

The CONTRACT is a different story for writers John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano. For either of them, it is their first attempt at co-authorship. After a year of Hurricane Harvey and other challenges, they have created, what they have termed, an inspirational thriller that bridges heaven and earth.

Here is the blurb:

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance, and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.

If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires.

Here is an excerpt.

Brad and Sarah left the complex and strolled back to their residence. Brad leaned close to Sarah and whispered, “Why do I get the feeling we’re being watched?”

“I’ve had that feeling since we arrived on base. I just assumed it came down to everyone here knowing you.”

“Naw. This feels different. I had this same instinct back in Afghanistan—nothing you can put your finger on but just a knowing feeling.”

“What should we do?”

“Keep our eyes open.”

“I would love to have a pair in the back of my head.”

Sarah’s comment broke the tension, and they both laughed.

Brad said, “We just have to keep aware of who’s around us.”

“Why?”

“I need to tell you some things about this whole situation. It will make you nervous, though. Let’s take a moment and sit here.” Brad pointed at a lone bench that stood beside the pedestrian path.

Bewildered, Sarah sat and looked at Brad, “So something is going on that you haven’t shared with me? I’ve had that strange feeling you described, only it has to do with you and me.”

Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?… A Different Kind of Reunion by @JoanneGuidoccio #CozyMystery #Reading @WildRosePress

ADifferentKindofReunion_w12053_750 (2)

Blurb

While not usually a big deal, one overlooked email would haunt teacher Gilda Greco. Had she read it, former student Sarah McHenry might still be alive.

Suspecting foul play, Constable Leo Mulligan plays on Gilda’s guilt and persuades her to participate in a séance facilitated by one of Canada’s best-known psychics. Six former students also agree to participate. At first cooperative and willing, their camaraderie is short-lived as old grudges and rivalries emerge. The séance is a bust.
Determined to solve Sarah’s murder, Gilda launches her own investigation and uncovers shocking revelations that could put several lives—including her own—in danger. Can Gilda and the psychic solve this case before the killer strikes again?

Excerpt

“Gilda, could you drop by tomorrow?” Constable Mulligan said, his voice cracking. “I’d like to wrap up this investigation as soon as possible. Give her parents some closure.”

Did he think he could wrap it up in a day? And what on earth could I contribute to the investigation? It didn’t make any sense at all. “Uh…I’m sorry. I’m having trouble with all of this. I don’t know—”

He cleared his throat. “We could meet for lunch at Trapper’s Choice Restaurant. They have fresh pickerel on Fridays.”

“I have clients scheduled for appointments all afternoon.” Or most of the afternoon. I liked to close the ReCareering office early on Friday afternoons.

“You’re still working?” he asked, surprise overtaking his previous gruffness. “I didn’t think you’d need to…I mean, you should be okay…”

He knew about my lottery win. Not surprising, since the lottery people had plastered my name and face everywhere when I won nineteen million dollars in Lotto 649. A quick Google search would have revealed my four-year-old lottery win. Old news, but still there on the second and third pages.

Tempted to end the conversation, I realized I couldn’t turn my back on Sarah or any of the others who might still be in danger. I mentally scanned my calendar. I had a two o’clock appointment and would be free to leave around three. I calculated the distance and figured I could drive to Parry Sound in ninety minutes or so. I added an extra hour and shared my plans.

“Great! You’ll have a couple of hours before the séance.”

“What séance?” Were Friday night séances a regular occurrence in Parry Sound? And why would someone like Constable Mulligan, who didn’t sound like a touchy-feely type of guy, attend one?

Character Interview

Are you happy with the genre your writer has placed you in?

I’m very happy with the cozy mystery genre. While I enjoy reading psychological thrillers, I could never imagine myself in one of them. Thankfully, the writer shares my feelings.

Do you like the way the book ended?

Of the three books in the series, I like this ending the best. The other two endings could be described as “Happily for Now,” while this ending is definitely “Happily Ever After.”

Would you be interested in a sequel, if your writer was so inclined?

Sigh! I was hoping for Books 4 and 5, but it looks like the writer wants to take a break from the Gilda Greco Mystery Series. But I’m not losing hope…she might change her mind in late October. She may get the “bug” when all she starts receiving all those NaNoWriMo emails and notices.

What do you do for a living?

A retired teacher, I have devoted my second act to career counseling. In 2011, I opened the first ReCareering office in Northern Ontario.

What is your greatest fear?

I have so many goals I wish to accomplish. I fear I’ll run out of time.

What do you wear when you go to sleep?

Cotton nightshirts

What is your most prized possession?

A hard question to answer. To be truthful, I don’t think I have “one” specific item that fits that description. In case of emergency, I would definitely reach for my purse and car keys. Other than that, everything else in my life is replaceable.

What do you think your greatest weakness is?

I overthink each new situation. Before making a decision, I’ll spend days (sometimes longer) researching and journaling about all the options. Underlying all that angst is a strong perfectionist streak I’m working hard to eradicate.

Excerpt:

Silence fell.

Rip spun away. His lungs emptied of air as he struggled to understand the betrayal of a man he’d trusted. The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the oversized bay windows, wrapping the room in golden light. He watched the effect the sunbeams had on the office. Swirling tendrils of pain and emptiness ripped at his insides, fighting to get out, but he forced them back, his many years of discipline winning over his temptation to let the emotions run rampant.

Odd that as angry as he was, he felt the bitterness more intently; that the past year as Edward’s right-hand man and friend meant nothing. Rip couldn’t take over the family business because he wasn’t family. All his work, care, and sacrifice to bring the winery back from bankruptcy didn’t matter. Blood mattered.

Once again, Rip found himself chasing a prize that danced just out of reach, like the shadow chased the elusive light of the sun.

And once again, he found himself back in the darkness.

So be it.

He swiveled on his heel and schooled his face to show no emotion. The ending was clear to him, and there was no doubt he’d win. He’d learned the lesson early, trapped in an abusive home, craving a life that was bigger and better and beyond reach. Sometimes, he believed he’d gotten there, only to realize it had only been a mirage—like now.

None of it mattered. He wanted Winsor Winery for himself. If the only way to do it was to marry a rich, spoiled heiress, he’d do it. If he had to make her fall in love with him, he would. If he had to lie, or deceive, he would. And by God, he’d have no blood on his hands because it was her own father who’d forced his hand.

“Where is she?”

“In Milan. I’ll give you her address.”

He gave a curt nod. “Don’t let her know I’m coming. I’d prefer to do this on my own, without any interference.”

Edward looked torn. “She deserves to hear the truth from me.”

“Then give me at least a week. Give me some time to get to know her before you bring up the idea of marriage. I’d like to see if we can even make this work between us.”

Slowly, the older man nodded. “One week. Then I’ll call and explain everything. If you both feel you can’t go through with it, I’ll accept your resignation.”

“Fine. I’ll go make the arrangements.” He swiveled on his heel but the sound of his name made him pause. “Yes?”

“I know you don’t believe me now, but I’m doing what I believe is best. For both of you.”

A thousand different responses rose to his lips, but Rip bit them all back, leaving Edward Winsor alone in silence.

It was time to go meet his future wife.

My Review

The Girl in The Moss starts out with a peaceful fishing trip that ends with a horrifying murder seen from the eyes of the victim.

And the action doesn’t stop there!

Angie Pallorino and her new fiancée, James Maddocks, escapes the stress of the past few months by stealing a quiet getaway on northern Vancouver Island. It blows up in their faces when human remains are found in a bed of moss deep in the rainforest.

Once more they face the onslaught of an unforgiving press. It causes Angie to lose her new P.I. job and possibly Maddocks.

When a chance to work the case comes up in the form of a retired Superior Court Judge, Angie takes it hoping to redeem her career and moreover, to prove herself worthy of Maddocks.

As a town’s secrets come to light and Angie’s life is endangered she begins to wonder if she will live long enough to uncover the truth and tell Maddocks how much she loves him.

This is a page-turning suspense I had a hard time to set down! My only regret is that the series is over. This could easily carry into future stories. I’d like to learn more about Holgerson, Maddocks and his new police program, and whether Angie ever gets her own P.I. firm.

Don’t let this series die!

I give The Girl in The Moss 5 lovely kisses

My Review

Iris Johansen is one of my auto-buy authors. Hide Away is the twentieth novel in the Eve Duncan series and believe me, these characters are still going strong!

Eve saved a child’s life against a merciless drug cartel in the previous book, Shadow Play, and is now trying to protect her against her evil despot of a father and those who wish to see him dead.

They return to Scotland, reuniting with Eve’s adopted daughter, Jane McGuire, McDuff and Seth Caleb. These books are multi-dimensional and there are several plotlines running together, but the author does a commendable job of keeping the reader in the loop without a ton of backstory.

The action is fast-paced, emotions run high, and the pages fly!

I give Hide Away 4.5 lovely kisses- I’m a fan!

From USA Today bestselling author Kimberly Kincaid comes CROSSING PROMISES, the third standalone title in the Cross Creek series, releasing March 5th! A series filled with rugged, salt of the earth heroes who happen to be brothers, and strong family dynamics, CROSSING PROMISES is filled with heart, humor, and heat. Grab your copy today!

For Owen Cross, the only thing that matters more than family is farming. As the oldest Cross brother, the land is his legacy, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make Cross Creek a success-including hiring local widow Cate McAllister to manage the bookkeeping tasks that are growing in his office like weeds. Cate’s as pragmatic as she is pretty, and she rattles his hard-fought composure at every turn.

Cate had known a lot of things about her husband before he died three years ago in a car accident, but how much debt he’d gotten them into wasn’t one of them. She needs her job at Cross Creek, even if her boss is both gruff and gorgeous. But Owen’s a family man, through and through, and the last thing Cate is interested in is anything-or anyone-with strings attached.

As Owen and Cate join forces to right the farm, they discover there’s more to the other than the surfaces shows, and that passion can be found in unexpected places. Can Cate heal from the loss of one family to gain the love of her life? Or will the past prove too much for the promise of the future?

EXCERPT:

Owen huffed out a soft laugh and took a sip of his beer. “You’re good at that. Being honest,” he clarified.

“Turns out, honesty can get you into as much trouble as the alternative sometimes,” Cate said, her heart smacking against her sternum for letting the omission slip out loud.

Of course, even with his beer buzz, Owen caught it. And, of course, because he had said beer buzz, he got bold enough to ask, “Yeah? How do you figure?”

It was on the tip of her tongue to dodge the question with some smart remark. But the truth was, beer buzz or not, Owen’s kindness deserved more than a baked-goods thank you. No matter how vulnerable the words would make her feel.

“You did a really nice thing for me the other day,” she said, and he coughed into his pint glass.

“Shit. You really do dive right in, don’t you?”

His candid reaction scattered the tension that had been building in her shoulders, and she forked over the truth. “Yep. Why did you send Mike to fix my oven?”

“Because.”

Owen waited out the minute it took Cate to replace a pair of beers for Greyson Whittaker and Billy Masterson and pour a round of Chardonnays for Michelle Martin and her usual crew for girls’ night out.

“Because?” Cate prompted upon her return, but Owen just lifted one leanly muscled shoulder in reply. Anyone else would’ve taken the cue to let it go, she knew. But she so wasn’t anyone else, and what’s more, she really wanted to know. “Come on, Owen. We got this far in the conversation. You’re not really going to go tight-lipped on me now, are you?”

The edges of his mouth curved just enough to form the hint of a smile, and ha! Gotcha. “You fixed my books. It only seemed fair.”

“You’re paying me to fix your books,” she pointed out, handing over a couple of checks to people waiting to settle up and head home for the night.

“Okay, fine,” Owen said when she was done, this time without prodding. “How about this? I sent Mike to fix your oven because you needed it. And I…get that.”

“You do.”

Cate’s breath hitched behind her navy blue top. No one knew how much baking meant to her-she’d certainly never told anyone how she felt when she was in the kitchen, how she craved the ease and calm that baking provided. She couldn’t. But something about the glint in Owen’s eyes told her that not only did he see how much she’d needed her kitchen, but he wasn’t bluffing or bullshitting about understanding that need, and when he nodded, she said the only thing she could think of.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” He lowered his stare to the half-empty beer in front of him. “I wanted you to know I appreciate your hard work, but I’m not always so great at knowing what to say. In fact, I kind of suck at it.” A self-deprecating laugh punctuated the admission, and God, did Cate know the feeling.

“Then you could just say that. Look, I’m not great at expressing myself, either,” she said, and Owen arched a brow.

“What? You? I never would’ve guessed.”

Cate’s laughter snuck up on her, but oh, it tasted dangerously good. “Ha-ha. Did you want to be the pot or the kettle, there, Casanova?”

Funny, his corresponding laugh sounded even better than hers felt. “Fair enough.”

“Why don’t we call it a draw and agree to stick with honesty from now on?” she asked. “Deal?”

“Yeah. Deal.”

Scarlett Edwards-Stewart has photographed everything from end zones to war zones. She’s confident she can ace this one little story to help her best friend’s failing magazine. At least, she would be if her super-sexy host wasn’t so tight lipped. But the more Scarlett works with Eli, the more she discovers that he’s not who he seems. Her Darkest Nightmare, first in an electrifying new series from New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak

THE HUNT FOR A SERIAL KILLER
Evelyn Talbot knows that a psychopath can look perfectly normal. She was only sixteen when her own boyfriend Jasper imprisoned and tortured her—and left her for dead. Now an eminent psychiatrist who specializes in the criminal mind, Evelyn is the force behind Hanover House, a maximum-security facility located in a small Alaskan town. Her job puts her at odds with Sergeant Amarok, who is convinced that Hanover is a threat to his community…even as his attraction to beautiful Evelyn threatens to tear his world apart.

BEGINS WITH AN ESCAPE FROM HER PAST
Then, just as the bitter Alaskan winter cuts both town and prison off from the outside world, the mutilated body of a local woman turns up. For Amarok, this is the final proof he needs: Hanover has to go. Evelyn, though, has reason to fear that the crime is a personal message to her—the first sign that the killer who haunts her dreams has found her again. . .and that the life she has so carefully rebuilt will never be the same…

My Review

This book was so good!

Evelyn Talbot suffered the ultimate betrayal at the hands of her childhood sweetheart and almost paid with her life.

Years later, devoting her career to study dangerous psychopaths, she hopes to learn from the criminals and maybe save victims like herself.

When mutilated bodies begin to show up in the small town of Hilltop, Sergeant Amorak has his hands full amid growing suspicions. His investigation leads him to Hanover House and creates tension between him and the woman he’s come to care about- the force behind Hanover House- Evelyn.

The suspense is so thick you could cut it with a knife (Don’t give these criminals ideas!) and the who-done-it aspect kept me guessing for most of the book. Each chapter begins with a creepy quote from a real serial killer and was arguably the best part of the story for me; it totally added to the thrill factor!

If I had a complaint, it would be the climax. I felt let down by the abruptness of the ending after such a big build-up. That said, this is a really good read.

I give Her Darkest Nightmare 4 lovely kisses

Boneseeker
(The Boneseeker Chronicles #1)
by Brynn Chapman
Romantic Suspense
Paperback & ebook, 213 pages
January 10th 2018 by The Wild Rose Press, Inc.

Aspiring scientist Arabella Holmes doesn’t fit the role of a 1900s lady. Her father, Sherlock, landed her a position at the Mütter Museum to pursue her dream of becoming a purveyor of abnormal science, or what her father calls a “Boneseeker.”

Henry Watson’s two-fold mission at the Mütter Museum is to join their team of forensic anthropologists in unearthing unusual antiquities and to watch over Arabella. If only he could get her to speak to him, instead of hurling knives in his general direction. Assigned to a most secret expedition to investigate a mysterious skeletal hand discovered in upstate New York, Arabella and Henry are soon caught in a scientific debate, and the search for the truth may have deadly consequences for those involved.

Are the bones from a Neanderthal? Or are they living proof of fallen angels known as Nephilim?

Watson and Holmes must put aside their differences, trust their instincts, and rely on one another to survive to uncover the truth.

Holmes and Watson, Like Father, like son…and daughter

For the record, I have, to date, read 90 percent of the Sherlock Holmes canon—and his predecessors, Wilkie Collins et al.

The new Sherlock Holmes characters in the recent films, however, ignited a fire in my brain.  The following is from my author’s notes in the Book, BONESEEKER

John Watson

If one has read the original Sherlock Holmes stories, one quickly realizes Watson was not the bumbling, plump counterpart portrayed in many films. Indeed, Watson was an ex-solider, a crack shot, an excellent physician and surgeon, and able to deduce minor mysteries on his own. I stand by the screenwriter’s version of the American film remakes, which portray him as a necessary catalyst for Holmes to interact with society, and while not the genius-deductive mastermind of Holmes, a force to be reckoned with in his own right.

Holmes and Asperger’s

I also contend that Sherlock Holmes had Asperger’s Syndrome. One familiar with this genetic phenotype could quickly recognize his difficulty relating to people, his extreme, all-consuming passions, and obsessive behavior and routines.

Holmes and Watson’s relationship was symbiotic, which is consequently the case with many with Asperger’s, despite their oft-great talents, they often rely on a loved one to assist them with deciphering societal cues and navigating the world of relationships.

Precisely like Watson and Holmes.

Case closed.

So rather than seeing John Watson as a bumbling straight man to Holmes, I rather see him as such.

And from this relationship—their children were born. How wonderful to imagine the horror of both, when their children fall in love, despite their most valiant efforts to sabotage the attraction.

Here is an excerpt of Henry, arguing with his father over the very subject. Like father, like son.

Henry’s cottage

Henry

I glance out the window at the dimming light, fading to pink streaks on the horizon.

It’s almost dark; we’re almost late for the fund-raising ball.

I stride to my chest of drawers and whip out a tie.

“Father, I thought we agreed I’d meet Priscilla, not pledge my immediate, undying love on first sight.” I rip the black tie off and begin again, eyeing him in the mirror.

One dark eyebrow arches. “Really, Henry? Pray tell, what is not to like? She is utterly gorgeous and well-connected to the museum. She is the perfect prospect.”

“You court her, then.” I wrestle with my tie, roughly slipping the knot up to my neck. I sigh, and spin to face him. “What’re you up to, then? The truth?”

Father’s chest and eyebrows rise simultaneously as he sucks in a breath and then exhales dramatically between his gritted teeth. “You are…”

“Difficult?”

“Yes, but not relevant to this part of the conversation.”

“Brilliant?” I interject.

He half-smiles, as he does when I infuriate him. “Yes, also not relevant. Might I find my own word?”

I turn back to the mirror. “I’m growing old waiting for it.”

“Unsettled. Unfocused. A rogue. Have too many interests—”

“I’m nothing like James, you mean.”

His eyes flare at the mention of my older brother. “I said nothing of the sort, Henry.”

“But you were thinking it.”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“And so marrying would cure me of my many shortcomings?” I turn back to him and give my lapels a rough tug to busy my hands. So I don’t poke him in the chest.

“The right woman, yes.”

“And Priscilla is that woman?”

He bends, picking up his hat and cane. “You’ve only just met her, give the girl a bloody chance. Henry—” He stops dead, revelation lighting his features. “You’ve already someone in mind, don’t you?”

I will my hands to stay still.

His gaze immediately snaps down. “Your hands are limp as dead fish. That is as much a giveaway as if they were fidgeting.”

“You are impossible.” I give up and permit my fingers free rein and crack my knuckles.

“Likewise.” Father’s lips purse as he considers. Comprehension and horror dawn as his mouth twitches beneath the mustache. He jams his eyes shut, shaking his head once. “Not Arabella? I thought we were past all that.”

They fly open, waiting.

I shrug, and slide my hands over my already slicked hair. I walk toward the door.

Escape. Flee. Freedom.

“For the love of all that’s holy, Henry. That’s almost like being married to Holmes.” He gives a little shudder.

“I daresay you’re one to talk. For years, you chose a life with Holmes over matrimony, so that argument is full of holes. Do as I say, not as I do?”

Father’s face softens, and he lifts a placating hand. “I love Arabella too, you know that. But, be reasonable. She doesn’t fit into polite society.”

“Neither does Holmes and he’s almost legendary now.”

“She is unruly, headstrong, and will never, ever listen.”

“I know. She fascinates me.”

He thrusts both his hands palm-up into the air, then quickly covers his mouth in a prayer pose.

I capitalize on his frustration to make my escape, walking swiftly to the door. “We are going to be late for the gathering. Don’t want to keep your pet, Priscilla, waiting. Really, Father, Violet might be jealous at your obvious attachment.”

“Love is too young to know what conscience is…”

It’s a game from my childhood, started by my mother. A perpetual contest between James and me—the most Shakespearean quotes meant the most sweets. His stare burns a hole in my back. I whirl, and glare back and grind my teeth. I always won. “Let every eye negotiate for itself, and trust no agent.”

Father’s mouth pops open. I shut the door before he closes it.

I always wished I could dance. I just love the joy and abandon you see in the faces of those blessed with the rhythm gene. Me, I have two left feet and am most likely tone deaf to boot, lol.

There are so many fantastic holiday songs that get the toes a-tapping. I thought I’d share a few of my favorites with you today.

Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin MaldonadoKevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Avi Kaplan was formerly a member of the group; he was replaced by Sallee in 2017. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslinesriffingpercussion and beatboxing, they are widely known for their covers, mostly of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material.

Find Your Happy Place. Make A Date With a Harlequin:

Excerpt – An Innocent Maid For the Duke

The faraway gaze in eyes the loveliest shade of green Jake had ever seen sent blood humming through his veins. Those eyes were limpid and soft as she gazed up at him, as if this was all a dream. To his surprise, not only did their steps meld in perfect unison, it was if they were designed to be partners.

For months he’d been numb to everything around him, going through life by rote, fulfilling required duties and responsibilities hour after brutal hour. Keeping himself busy. But now, here, with this vision of loveliness, he could actually feel the blood coursing through his veins. It was as if he had left a cold dark place to enter a land of light and warmth.

Her light. Her warmth. He basked in it, even though he knew he did not deserve it.

He swept her around a turn at the end of the room, gazing down into her face. What did she look like beneath the mask? Her lips were lush and full, her eyes dreamy, her loose hair a river of thick gilded waves that curled in little tendrils on her faintly flushed cheek.

His body responded to that shadowed glow of pink on her skin. The blood in his veins beat a tattoo of desire.

Her lips parted as if she, too, felt the connection between them. The rise and fall of her generous breasts quickened with each indrawn breath. A pulse beat rapidly at the base of her throat. A place he longed to taste with his tongue.

Awareness sparked in the air. Their steps slowed. Their gazes locked. Hers dropped to his mouth.

With all the old reckless impulsiveness he’d been determined to curb these past many months, he drew her flush against his body. She tensed and, though he wanted to curse, he eased his hold, preparing to let her go. Unbelievably, she smiled up at him and relaxed into his embrace.

A brief kiss was all he intended, a thank you for the respite she’d brought to the darkness of his world, but as the plush full mouth yielded beneath his lips, he lost himself in the pleasure of kissing a willing woman.

Deeper and deeper he delved the soft recess of her mouth, while he felt the warm breath of her sigh against his cheek. A tentative dart of her tongue into his mouth sent a jolt of lust ripping through him.

She gasped and pulled away, staring at him in shock, startled out of her daydream by the evidence of his arousal through the wisp of silk she wore. He cursed his stupidity. Lost in sensation, he’d forgotten the rules of the game. Never rush a woman, especially one he did not know.

He stepped back and bowed. ‘I beg your pardon.’

Fingertips went to her lips, covering her mouth, her eyes wide behind her mask, wary, distraught, but also hazy with desire, which gave him a vague sense of satisfaction.

‘I mean you no harm,’ he hastened to assure her, taking another step back.

‘I must go,’ she said breathlessly, her glance finding the door. ‘I should not be here.’

A married woman then, out for a night of discreet fun. A strange sense of disappointment filled him. Really? This was exactly the sort of entertainment his friends had been recommending would get him out of the doldrums. Before he settled down to find a duchess.

The marriage is fake. But for a sassy chef and an arrogant billionaire, the sparks are real… Jackson “The Beast” Boudreaux is rich, gorgeous, and unbelievably rude to the staff at Chef Bianca Hardwick’s New Orleans restaurant. Bianca would sooner douse herself in hot sauce than cook for Jackson again, but when he asks her to cater his fund-raiser, Bianca can’t refuse, knowing the cash will help pay her mother’s medical bills. Then Jackson makes another outrageous request: Marry me. The unconventional offer includes an enormous sum—money Bianca desperately needs, even if it does come with a contract—and a stunning ring.

The heir to a family bourbon dynasty, Jackson knows the rumors swirling around him. The truth is even darker. Still, he needs a wife to secure his inheritance, and free-spirited, sassy Bianca would play the part beautifully. Soon, though, their simple business deal evolves into an emotional intimacy he’s built walls to avoid.

This time it was me who froze in shock when our lips came together. It took him several long moments of gentle coercion with his tongue before I finally opened my mouth. When I did, it was on a soft groan that he stole when he inhaled.

He was so big, and warm, and hard everywhere, except for his mouth, which was like cotton candy. I melted into it. He slid his thumb under my ear, and I shivered. His fingers pressed into my scalp. When he sank his teeth gently into my lower lip, lightning flashed through me.

I fisted my hand into the scruff of his neck and pulled him closer.

Suck, slide, nip, repeat, feel your pulse in all the hidden places in your body. This kiss was cashmere. It was luxuriant. It was decadent, unhurried, sweetly delicious, like stretching out on warm sand and drinking a mai tai. His scent was in my nose: pine and musk and something earthy and fresh, the way the woods smell after it rains.

He made that masculine sound deep in his throat that I found weirdly thrilling and pressed his hand into the small of my back. It brought our lower bodies together and provided me with impressive evidence that Jackson Boudreaux was anything but nonsexual.

“Oh,” I breathed.

His laugh was soft and dark. “Yes, oh. Stop talking.”

I couldn’t catch my breath, but it didn’t matter because his lips were on mine again. Little puffs of air through my nose would have to sustain me.

His hand in the small of my back became the iron band of his arm around my waist. My nipples tightened. His heartbeat crashed against my chest. The kiss turned from slow and sweet to hard and hot, first melting me and then lighting me on fire.

He tangled his hand into my hair, pulled the clip loose that held it all in place, and let it fall to the floor. He made that sexy, manly noise again when my hair spilled into his fingers. I fought the urge to press my hips against his, then softly moaned in relief when he did it for me, one big paw cupped under my bottom. Yes, yes, yes, thrummed my heart, aching for more.

He broke away, breathing heavily. My eyes drifted open. He stared down at me with a look like he might devour me.

Good thing I was in the mood to be devoured.

At twenty-eight years old, the only men in lawyer Cate Jenkins’ life are her two cats, Thor and Loki, unless you count her not-so-secret love affair with Ben & Jerry.

Escape comes in the form of art classes, where life drawing model Joe provides a welcome distraction from the monotony of her job. Each Thursday for five weeks, she gets to lose herself in a world of twinkling blue eyes and chiselled abs.

Meanwhile, next-door neighbour Dane is determined to win her heart. Can his gifts of coffee and kitty treats win out against muscled perfection?

EXCERPT:

Meeting Joe

“Ladies and gentleman.” Delores glanced over at Miguel, the sole male in the room. “We’ve got a treat tonight. The lovely Joe is going to model for us.”

She beckoned to someone behind us, and jaws dropped as Joe ambled to the front of the class, wearing only a sheet around his waist. He perched on the stool while Delores arranged the fabric to cover the good bits, and then he followed her directions to, “Lean forward a bit. Move your hand.”

Beside me, Marie’s pencil rolled out of her fingers and under Miguel’s chair, and it took him a second or two to snap his eyes away from Joe and retrieve it for her.

Finally happy with Joe’s pose, Delores clapped her hands. “This evening, we’re going to practice our sketching. Joe’s going to move every twenty minutes, which will give you the chance to explore various positions.”

From the way the other girls were salivating, I knew exactly which positions they wanted to explore. Even Marie, who had a boyfriend. I reached over and tapped her pad.

“We’re supposed to be drawing.”

“I’m committing his muscles to memory before I start. Wonder what would happen if I visited the ladies’ room and accidentally tripped over that sheet?”

With Marie, I could never quite tell if she was serious. This was the woman who’d once scrambled over a screaming crowd to clamber on stage with Justin Timberlake and managed to squeeze his ass before security hauled her away. I knew because she showed me the video on her phone. Loosening Joe’s sheet would be nothing for Marie.

Author Bio:

Elise Noble is an English rose with a few thorns who loves chocolate, sleep, and well-defined abs. Not hers, unfortunately. She lives near London with a sexy chef, a horse who eats all her money, and a dog who eats her car keys. Always a reader, she took up writing after inspiration struck in an old manor house, and still pinches herself at the fact that people read her books. She spends her days working in an office and her nights dreaming up new characters for you to fall in love with. Elise currently writes the Blackwood Security series of romantic thrillers and the Trouble series of romantic comedies.

Interview with Elise Noble

What was the job you always wanted as a child?

After reading Swallows and Amazons, I wanted to be a sailing instructor, at least until school swimming lessons almost put me off water for life. Those books were awesome—tough girls who matched the guys in every way. Then I got a shiny knew bike and decided I wanted to be a professional cyclist, but then I realised how much effort that takes. Once I discovered horses (aged ten at the school fete), I wanted to to be a riding instructor. But that doesn’t pay much, so now I keep the horses as a hobby.

If you weren’t writing for a hobby, what could we find you doing?

Sleeping. Or possibly eating chocolate.

What one thing would you like to accomplish this year?

I’ve got a new series plotted out, eight books in total, and I’d like to get at least half of those written. I also want to get back to Egypt and go scuba diving, something the UK government and travel industry seem determined to make more difficult every year.

Hero or villain?

Neither. I like my heroes and heroines flawed, and to quote Tom Hiddleston, “Every villain is a hero in his own mind.”

What’s the last book you read?

I feel like I should say something high-brow and literary, but it wasn’t. I read Taking Turns by JA Huss. Filthy, dirty fun.

Do you have any phobias?

I hate parking on slopes. Can’t. Do. It. I’ll happily walk a mile if it means I can park somewhere flat.

If you were a cartoon character, which would you be and why?

Angelica out of the Rugrats. I actually did dress up as her once, for a fancy dress gymkhana (games on horseback). The rest of my team were Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil, which meant I was the only person trying to ride a horse in a dress. I’m pretty sure no photos exist, thank goodness.

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

Me—it’s my life, after all. But I’m pretty sure nobody would want to watch a movie about a ditzy blonde who sleeps a lot, takes three goes to get into a parking space, and burns everything she cooks.

Who are your top three authors to read?

Only three? I’d have to pick one from each of my favourite genres – Kristen Ashley for romance, John Sandford for thrillers, and Janet Evanovich for comedy.
