HIDING WITH THE HEARTBREAKER by USA Today bestseller Virginia Nelson

Rule: Protect the innocent.

Making people laugh for a living is easy, but when a beautiful stranger needs Aloysius Sutton’s help, he has to find a way to become Jude’s hero.

He would swear he didn’t think about kissing her before he did it. One second, he reveled in the way the light glinted off her eyes, the next he took her lips with his own. He might have been able to pull back, too, if she hadn’t released this delicious little moan from the back of her throat. The sound drove him to slant his lips over hers fully, sampling and teasing at her mouth with all the repressed attraction he’d bottled up since he’d met her. Her fingers dug into his scalp, altering the angle in a way which deepened their kiss. He gripped the fence on either side of her to resist pulling her closer, but he didn’t have to since she melded herself against his body.

HOW TO UNBREAK A HEART by USA Today bestseller Jennie Marts

Rule: If you love her, don’t let her go.

Solitary cowboy, Trip Turner finally has a chance to correct the mistakes he made when he let the woman he loved walk out of his life twelve years ago. But now that Bre Wilson is back, will he be able to unbreak her heart?

Oh Lord, what was he thinking? What was he doing?

His mind was racing, shouting at him to pull back, but he couldn’t.

Couldn’t help himself. The pull was too strong.

He moved closer, dipped his head, his lips barely brushing hers. She inhaled the softest gasp, her breath catching in the middle, and it was the sexiest sound he’d ever heard.

He didn’t think, didn’t rationalize what a dumb idea this was.

His heart and his need were speaking louder than his head as he leaned down and kissed her.

Rule: A real man never breaks a woman’s heart.

Can Olympic mountain bike champion Ryder Bennett and his public relations rep Addison Carrington keep things professional between them this time around, or will they risk a sexy scandal for a chance at love?

“Addison,” he said, cupping her bottom and rolling them until he hovered over her. “You’re so sweet. So, so sweet.”

“I don’t want to be sweet.” She arched her back and pressed her full breasts against his chest. “I want to be bad. Really, really bad.”

HER UNWANTED HERO by Veronica Forand

Rule: A real man always helps someone in need… he may be the only one who does.

A disenchanted police officer must choose between keeping a woman’s affection or keeping her alive.

“I’m at the pathetically-in-love stage.”

“Wow. That’s very in love.” She tempered her smile. “Have you ever thought about what you’d sacrifice for her?”

He laughed. “What kind of answer are you expecting? That I’d climb the highest mountain, swim the biggest sea?”

“Think back … John’s rules.”

“The one warning us against dating your best friend’s sister?”

She rolled her eyes as though a teenager again. “Not quite. The one about how a real man always helps someone in need, especially when they can’t help themselves. You’re a man now, right?”

He threw up his hands. Rules were easier to say than live by. “I tried to help her. She doesn’t want it.”

“I guess then the question is what you’re willing to sacrifice in order to keep her safe?”

ONCE A HEARTBREAKER by T.J. Kline

Rule: A real man never lies, especially to a woman.

Ty Preston ran out on the woman he loved twelve years ago, but now he’s back to prove he’s a changed man. However, Rayne can’t risk getting her heart broken by the cowboy again.

Her heart took a nose-dive into her stomach as goosebumps broke out over her arms again. She wanted to pull her hand away from his but couldn’t seem to get her body to cooperate with her mind. Ty lifted his hand to her face, brushing back a piece of hair that had fallen from her practical ponytail, letting his thumb trail over the edge of her jaw.

Damn this man and the way her body still responded to him.

“You don’t even know if I’m actually any good.” What was supposed to be a protest came out as a feathery whisper of sound, husky and far more sexy sounding than she meant for it to.

“I know exactly how good you are, Rayne.”

She’s about to change this playboy’s rule book.

“If you didn’t know by now that tangling yourself in a man’s arms might get you kissed, you should. I also think you should know that I’m not good at being tested. Normally I fail and give into my urges. Like me wanting to kiss you, now.”

HOMETOWN HEARTBREAKER by Heather Long

Rule: A real man always puts his best foot forward…

Zeke always planned to steal her heart, but she left him on base. It’s the bottom of the ninth, and Charity is up to bat. Can she tell her two-all stars the truth or will a foul end her best chance?

He traced the line of her lips as she took several deep gulps of air. “If you keep touching me that way,” her breath tickled his fingertips. “It’ll be hard to think about anything.”

“Not sure whether you want me to stop or want me to kiss you.” Really shouldn’t have gone there. They weren’t ready for that.

He wasn’t.

She opened those sweet brown eyes, the pupils so large he imagined he could drown in them. Wanted to dive in and never leave. They weren’t there. Hell, he’d barely had her back in his life for twenty-four hours, and all he wanted to do was turn everything upside down.

A real man always puts his best foot forward. He knows when it’s time to act. When to take the step he’s been waiting to take…listen to your gut, Zeke. Listen. It knows, even when your heart and your mind are at war.

His mind said think it through. His heart wanted to jump. His gut needed a plan.

“How can you still look at me like that?”

What a stupid question. “Because I still love you.”

Can Savannah teach serial heartbreaker Walker to be domesticated in ten days and convince him that maybe they can have a shot at a ‘them’ or can Walker convince Savannah there can be a ‘them’ on his terms only?

“One more thing if you’re up for it,” Savannah pulled on the hem of her shirt.

“I’ll be up for it, baby.” Walker grinned.

“I’ll teach you to be domesticated if you’ll teach me to be wild.”

His jaw went slack.

ENGAGING THE ENEMY by HEATHER BOYD

A duchess should be regal, aloof and the image of calm elegance. But those words have never applied to Mercy, Duchess of Romsey. A widow and mother of a young duke, Mercy is lonely and floundering to keep the estate afloat. When she discovers the existence of Leopold Randall, her husband’s estranged cousin, Mercy commits to help him locate his missing siblings if he’ll return the estate to order. Although cautioned against trusting a man who would inherit everything should her son die, she impetuously hands over the estate to Leopold’s care in the hope of keeping him near.

Leopold Randall, heir to the young duke, has returned to Hampshire to demand information regarding the fate of his missing siblings. Unfortunately, the Duchess of Romsey is clueless about them, yet her struggle to maintain the estate tugs at Leopold’s sense of duty. At her insistence, he steps in to bring order to chaos while searching for hints to his family’s whereabouts amongst the old duke’s papers. Yet the duchess tempts him in ways best unspoken. He fights to hide his weakness for her and a shameful past that could see him banished again. But when Leopold discovers a threat against the duchess and young duke’s life, he must join forces with the temptress to protect his last known relative.

Bestselling historical author Heather Boyd believes every character she creates deserves their own happily-ever-after, no matter how much trouble she puts them through. With that goal in mind, she writes steamy regency romance stories that skirt the boundaries of propriety to keep readers enthralled until the wee hours of the morning. Heather has published thirty novels and shorter works. Catch her latest news http://www.heather-boyd.com. She lives north of Sydney, Australia, and does her best to wrangle her testosterone-fuelled family (including cat Morpheus) into submission.

Award-winning author Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young, then moved on to paranormal mysteries and Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population of relatives, friends, and feline strays.

New Zealander Nicola Davidson adores writing witty, erotic, and twisty turny romance, with Regency and Tudor tales under her own name and contemporary as Lani Hughes. When not chained to her computer she loves the beach, history geeking, and cheering on the champion All Blacks rugby team, preferably accompanied by gourmet chocolate and diet soda.

With 16 books published, best-selling author Wendy Vella’s passion for romance novels has grown stronger with every new release. She has multiple ideas running through her head at all times, and loves writing strong heroes and feisty heroines. Humor is her trademark, and mix that with sensuality and intrigue and you have a book that will keep you turning the page until the end.

Beverley Oakley was seventeen when she bundled up her first 500+ page romance and sent it to a publisher. But drowning her heroine on the last page was not in line with the expectations of romance readers so Beverley became a journalist. Since 2009, Beverley has published more than thirteen sizzling historical romances, filled with mystery and intrigue, mostly set in England during the Georgian, Regency and Victoria eras, under the name Beverley Oakley.

Beverley lives near Melbourne opposite a picturesque nineteenth century insane asylum with the handsome Norwegian bush pilot she met while running a safari lodge in Botswana, their two beautiful daughters and a rambunctious Rhodesian Ridgeback the size of a pony. She also writes psychological historicals, and Colonial-Africa- set romantic adventures, as Beverley Eikli.

Donna Cummings has worked as an attorney, a winery tasting room manager, and a retail business owner, but nothing beats the thrill of writing humorously-ever-after romance.

She resides in New England but fantasizes about spending the rest of her days in a tropical locale, wearing flip flops year-round, or in Regency London, scandalizing the ton.

She can usually be found on Twitter talking about writing and coffee, and on Facebook talking about coffee and writing.

His Past is Better Left Forgotten: No Greater Hell @JerrieAlexander #MFRWauthor #Suspense @BPICPromos

No Greater Hell
by Jerrie Alexander
Series: Lost and Found, Inc., #4
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: May 17, 2016

His past is better left forgotten…

Former Army helicopter pilot Jake Donovan is lucky to be alive. At least that’s what his team of neurosurgeons said. But he knows differently. Jake’s crimes almost cost Holly Hoffman her life, and even though he can’t remember, the pain in her eyes is something he’ll never forget.

Holly’s done being a victim. As a trauma nurse her skills are needed by a humanitarian group providing medical aid after a killer storm ravages the Gulf Coast of Texas. Saving lives however, won’t be an option when a madman wants her dead.

Can Jake and Holly shed the weight of his dark past, or will their happily-ever-after have a fatal ending?

Logan’s willingness to support her, to help her right this wrong, touched her heart. For him to agree so easily spoke volumes. He was doing this for her. Deep down she’d known it for years. Had she and Logan been in love all this time and ignored or refused to admit it? Had fate given her the chance to answer that question?
It’s about time you got into the field.” Jake knew how badly she wanted to become a field agent. She’d been training hard.
“So you’ll come back for the big day?”
“I don’t know.” Not wanting to lie to her, Jake met her gaze with his. “No.”
She opened her mouth as if to argue. Nate cut her off by asking her to pass the coleslaw.
Jake shoved a forkful of beans into his mouth and said nothing else.
The group ate in an uncomfortable silence, thankfully broken when Diablo dropped a big paw on Jake’s leg to beg for food. He jumped, giving everyone a laugh.
“Hang on,” he said to the dog. As he pulled off a chunk of chopped beef to share, the talk switched to Diablo, who Marcus had smuggled into Texas from Colombia. Raised by the notorious drug lord, Manuel Ortega, the dog had been trained to kill on command, and was considered unredeemable by everybody except Marcus. But Diablo had proved them wrong by accepting new training, and he’d grown to worship Marcus. Man and dog had adjusted to each other beautifully.
Jake hoped his own transition to a new life would be as easy.
Just getting through today was trying as hell. The group of people surrounding him ranked up there with the best, a team that worked well as a unit, helping people when all other resources had failed.
Reluctantly, he stood and started his good-byes. He tried to make it quick, giving a friendly hug to Nate and Marcus. Dalton reached out his hand, and Jake accepted it as an honest gesture.
He and Dalton had gotten off to a rough start. Understandable, since Jake had been living as Johnny Darling for a human trafficking ring at the time. FBI agent Dalton Murphy had worked the case, ultimately arresting Jake for kidnapping Holly. That arrest led to the removal of a brain tumor that had saved his life and restored the part of his memory that was Jake Donovan.
Kay held Jake tightly for a few minutes, then she whispered, “Take care of yourself.”
“I will.”
She turned and buried her face in her husband’s chest. Jake kissed the back of her head and then walked out the door.
These people had saved his life. They’d taken care of him even though he didn’t deserve the sweat off their brow. Nothing would ever lessen his gratitude. He committed everything they’d done for him to memory.
He didn’t remember the monster he’d once been, but they did.
With each step, his breathing grew labored, as an imagined metal strap tightened around his chest. With each step away from the comfort and protection of his friends, the band tightened. And with each step, he opened the door to his new future.
A big hand landed on his shoulder. “We all have our private hell. I hope you find the way back from yours. Take care, my friend.”
Jake turned around to face Nate. “You too.”
“You won’t find redemption by living in isolation. You’ll find it here.” Nate tapped a finger on Jake’s temple.
Jake shook his head. “I’m not looking for redemption. I’m just hoping for a little peace of mind.”

The stakes are high in LOVEGAME, when a movie star with a shattered past meets a man who can either break her or make her whole. USA Today and New York Times bestselling author, Tracy Wolff, returns with a novel full of seduction and desire. Fans of Tiffany Reisz’ The Siren or Lauren Dane’s Laid Bare will fall in love with Ian and Veronica, a true crime novelist and movie star, who steam up the pages in LOVEGAME.

Synopsis:

True Crime novelist Ian Sharpe has spent his career writing about serial killers for very personal reasons. For his latest exposé, he is taking on the sadistic madman known as the Red Ribbon Strangler, and when his research leads him to Hollywood’s most private and provocative actress, he will break every rule to uncover her truth.

The daughter of one of Hollywood’s golden couples, chased by paparazzi and treated as a commodity her entire life, Veronica Romero wields her sex appeal like a weapon. She expects Ian to be as easy to control as every other man she’s ever known. But from the beginning, he refuses to fall into line. Mysterious and cool, challenging and just a little bit dangerous, Ian somehow makes her feel safe—even as he digs into the deepest secrets of her life and pushes her to the breaking point.

As raw ecstasy gives way to agonized truths, their dark obsession exposes secrets that have been buried for far too long. Ian wants to tear down her walls and heal the sensual woman underneath. But if Veronica’s learned anything, it’s that the line between pleasure and pain is a narrow one—and when caught between them the only thing that matters is how you play the game.

LOVEGAME

Excerpt:

I take picture after picture, with a vintage champagne glass in my hand or my face buried in a huge bouquet of dahlias. Toward the end, Marc has the stylist and his assistant wrap me up in a long string of artificial belladonna since the real stuff can cause problems if it touches the skin. Then they heap my gloved hands with a mountain of the poisonous black berries and Marc has me hold my hands out to the camera in a deadly macabre offering.

Again and again Marc shoots me like that, taking pictures from every possible angle. On his knees in front of me, looking up. From a ladder above me, looking down. Beside me. Behind me. Across the room. Up close. Again and again he points and clicks. Again and again, I smile and pout and make every other expression he asks for. I even take his suggestion to tilt my head back with my mouth open wide and hold one of the berries between my thumb and index finger as I pretend to be about to drop it in. As I do, I close my eyes and pretend not to be totally icked out.

When I open them two minutes and twenty shots later, the first person I see is Ian. He’s leaning back against one of the mirrored walls and for once his omnipresent notebook is nowhere to be seen. Instead he’s staring straight at me, a half-snarl on his normally calm face and his eyes burning with a mixture of contempt and desire.

It’s the first time I’ve seen anything but pleasant or puzzled interest from him and it has the tiny hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Has ice skating down my spine and a desert taking up residence in my mouth. Because, in that moment, as our eyes lock and his turn impossibly darker, impossibly blacker, I don’t know who he sees. Can’t tell who he wants.

Me or her?

Actress or murderer?

Sentient being or a character he helped create?

It’s just more fuel to add to the fire of my earlier doubts and in that one tense and electric moment, it comes to me. What the cover shot should be.

What I need it to be.

Marc backs off a little, has his assistant come forward with a trash bag for me to throw away the last of the berries and the gloves I’ve been wearing. As she pauses to tie up the bag in front of me, I ask her for a couple wipes.

She quickly returns with a box of baby wipes and I smile my thanks even as Marc instructs me back against the mirror for what he calls “the last series of shots.”

I do as he instructs, but as he’s fiddling with the lighting, I turn toward the mirror and swipe the wipe over the right half of my face.

“What are you doing?” my makeup artist squawks as he comes racing across the room at me.

“Trust me, Dalton,” I tell him as I continue to scrub.

“Stop doing that!” he orders as he grabs on to the end of the wipe and actually tries to wrestle it away from me.

“Just wait,” I instruct, refusing to let go no matter how hard he tugs.

“But—”

“What are you up to, Veronica?” Marc asks. He sounds more intrigued than annoyed.

“I’ll show you,” I tell him, pushing gently at Dalton’s hand until he finally lets go with a whimper.

And then, with the whole room—including Ian—watching me intently, I wipe the entire half side of my face clean of any and all makeup. I do it carefully, making sure that the line that runs down the center of my face is exact so that both sides are completely symmetrical.

When I’m done, I reach up and take off my right earring and hand it to Dalton who still looks slightly shell-shocked. Then I step back and stare at this new reflection of myself in the mirror.

Half me at my most natural, half her at her most armored, it’s a devastating look. Made even more so by the elaborate fifties makeup Dalton has me in—all red lips and thick black liner and long, long lashes.

There is a difference, I tell myself fiercely as I study myself. I am not her. I will never be her, no matter what it felt like four months ago.

In the background I’m aware of Marc cursing softly, of him snapping picture after picture. I don’t turn around, instead continuing to give him my back so that he gets both me and my reflection in each shot.

“Turn around,” he breathes after he’s taken at least three dozen pictures.

Reluctantly, I do as he requests, then follow his impatient gesture for me to move away from the mirror. I step forward and then the camera starts again, clicking away to get the shot from this angle as well.

At that moment, Ian moves and I make the mistake of glancing his way. Our gazes lock and heat slams through me at the look he’s giving me, has my eyes widening and my lips parting on a gasp as I struggle to draw air into lungs that have abruptly forgotten how to work.

“Fuck,” Marc breathes from where he’s narrowing in on my face. “That’s it. That’s the money shot.”

I drag my eyes away from Ian, but it’s too late. For the first time in a very, very long time, I feel vulnerable. And I hate every second of it.

Excerpt (Brazen):
Bianca wasn’t about to go on a rescue mission without her brass balls any more than she’d leave her SIG SAUER in the armory.

She picked up the giant jawbreaker-sized orbs of solid brass from the top of the dresser. As far as good luck charms went, they were a bit…unusual, but so was just about everything in her life. The light streaming into the bedroom from the skylights dotting the ceiling in the large open-concept loft reflected off the metal balls as she rolled them in the palm of her hand.

They were hard, eye-catching, and had an impenetrable surface that gave no hints about what was inside. Grinning to herself, she shook her head. They were just like the man who’d given her Iron Man’s nads as a gag gift for their six-month dating anniversary.

The shower turned off.

Temptation tugged at her. She checked the time on her phone.

They weren’t needed for the briefing for another thirty minutes and Taz hadn’t even begun to pack for the mission to rescue Gidget. Their equipment, guns and ammo were already stowed on the private jet that would leave in a few hours to take them to the Indulgence Resort. But unless he got packing, Taz would be buck naked while they were posing as the fabulously rich and newly married Trey and Bethany Alderson. While she loved having him like that, this was the last lead they had as to Gidget’s location and nothing could take priority over finding her.

Bianca wouldn’t fail her friend again.

Taz strolled out of the bathroom in a haze of steam. A white towel sat low on his hips and the wet ebony waves of his hair made his mossy-green eyes stand out even more than usual against his brown skin. The air of barely constrained danger and never-questioned dominance as natural to him as his confident strut when he crossed the open space toward her. She caught a glimpse of his full lips curled into a sexy smirk moments before he walked behind her as if he wasn’t thinking the exact same lusty thoughts that she was.

He could have her anyway he wanted and the cocky bastard knew it—but then again, the reverse was just as true.

They may not have shared their darkest secrets with each other, but all of those skeletons were in the past and they were about the future. Taz. Her. The B-Squad. She formed a fist around the good-luck brass balls. They’d find Gidget, destroy the drug kingpin and the world would be theirs. There was nothing standing in their way.

Taz wrapped a sinewy forearm around her waist, yanking her backwards against his hard chest. “It’s not polite to play with your balls so much.”

Desire licked her skin, making her feel as naked as he was. Water droplets from his chest dampened the back of her black tank top. Her mouth went dry. Her panties went wet. And her heart went into overdrive.

“Like you know anything about being polite,” she said, her voice breathy and low.

His fingers dropped to the button of her jeans. “I’d rather stick with what I’m good at.”

Excerpt:

“C’mon, Uncle Bens. I’m wide-open.”

Ben Capshaw lowered his throwing arm and glared at his agent’s son, Todd. “Will you stop calling me that?”

“But you are my uncle Bens,” Todd said with a frown.

“Yeah, I guess. But when you say it like that I feel like a side dish at a Chinese restaurant.”

The boy snickered. “I know.”

Ben quickly raised the football again and pretended to whip it at him. When Todd flailed his arms and ducked, Ben had his revenge. “Nice move,” he called out with a laugh.

Todd laughed, too. “Okay, c’mon, throw it for real this time. I’m really ready.”

Ben lobbed the football in the air and watched with budding disappointment as it sailed right through Todd’s arms and bounced on the ground. Ben shook his head. The kid obviously needed more practice. “You almost had it,” he lied.

Todd picked up the ball and ran it back to him. “You know, I’m so glad you’re coming for dinner, Uncle Bens. Are you and my mom sure I can’t tell anyone you’re here?”

Ben looked up at the sky and sighed. A sigh that clearly said, if we go through this one more time I’m going to find your entire stash of Twinkies and eat them all without remorse. If the kid were a little older, he’d understand that threat and let the question lie. Instead, Todd continued to gaze up at him with big, hopeful brown eyes.

“No,” Ben told him firmly. “Not your BFF, not even your dog. No one. Got it?”

Todd’s young face looked crushed.

“Look, it’s like I told you before, I don’t want the paparazzi buzzing around here. I’m officially on vacation.”

“In Wood Manor, New Jersey?”

“Hey, the beach here is just as good as Los Angeles, and after a few days I’ll drive up to New York City.” He loved New York in September. He’d get a haircut and a shave, a massage, meet a few women.

Speaking of meeting women…

Ben’s gaze lingered again on the tasty-looking blonde sitting on the bench. He’d been checking her out since he and Todd first arrived at the park. Couldn’t help himself. He had a real thing for blondes, and most—thank you, God—had a real thing for him.

“Hey, Todd, why don’t we go to the slide over there?” Closer to that blonde.

“No way.”

He turned to the boy in surprise. “Why not?”

“That slide’s for babies.”

“No, it’s not. Look, there’s an adult over there,” he said, pointing the football toward the bench.

Todd looked over and made a face. “You want to go talk to that woman, don’t you?”

“Wh-what?” Ben spluttered. “No, no. No way. Hey, stop listening to your mom about me.” Besides, he didn’t want to talk to her, anyway. “Flirt” was a better verb choice. He wanted to flirt with that woman. There was a difference. Anyone could spew out words and just talk. Flirting required talent, always used with the sole purpose of letting the other person know you’re interested. And he was very interested in her.

However, as much as he was tempted to go over and introduce himself, he wouldn’t. He didn’t want to risk his anonymity. But he didn’t see the harm in getting a better look at an attractive woman. After all, if he was in a museum, he’d certainly want to get closer to a work of art, wouldn’t he? And from what he could tell, that woman was a bona fide masterpiece.

She had the kind of straight, shiny blond hair his fingers itched to feel and run through, and a body that was slender in an athletic kind of way—built more like a runner than a centerfold—and not at all fake like most of the women in L.A. He was positive there was nothing cosmetically enhanced on her. Not that she wore anything revealing to bring that kind of attention to herself. Yet, dressed in sweatpants and a Red Sox T-shirt, she’d managed to get his attention just the same.

“Um, Todd, are you sure you don’t want to go over there?” he asked again, trying to rein in and saddle his raging testosterone.

Todd took off running. “You have to catch me first,” he called out with a laugh.

That little bugger. Ben dropped the football and ran after him. Todd was fast, weaving his way around the wooden maze of forts and playground equipment and then disappearing from his sight. Ben climbed up the rope to the wooden platform and scanned the area. From the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Todd ducking into a tube slide. Ha! Gotcha now, kid. He ran over and climbed into a slide himself, hoping to catch him by surprise.

The only problem was he didn’t slide down.

He began to twist, realizing his shoulders were wedged in tight. With one arm pinned down and the other arm up, he tried shifting his hips to wiggle back up. That didn’t work, either. Okay, he wasn’t sure how he’d managed this strange, bizarre feat, but he needed some help.

Crap. He could see the headline now: “Career Not Only Thing Going Down Tubes.” Oh, man, his agent and publicist would have his head on a platter if that happened. He’d be lucky to get local theater work after that. Served him right for showing off and acting like a ten-year-old instead of the thirty-four-year-old he was.

Where the hell is Todd?

Ben heard movement above him. Thank goodness. He looked up, ready to ream Todd out for leaving him hanging so long. But he clamped his lips shut when he stared directly into the face of a cherubic little girl instead.

“Excuse me. Now it my turn,” she said in a tiny voice.

“Uh…well, you have to wait. See, I can’t move right now.”

She frowned. “But I said excuse me.”

“Yeah, I know, but—”

Her little face puckered and those big blue eyes filled with tears, which set the alarm bells ringing. No, no, please. I beg you! Oh, man, the kid was going to cry on him.

Where the hell is Todd!

The little girl did begin to cry—not with the loud, obnoxious wailing he half expected, but with a quiet, trembling frown and dime-size tears that fell like an H5 hailstorm. It made him want to break down and cry, too. He didn’t need this right now—stuck as he was—especially since he had no clue how to convey he was telling the truth to such a young child. About to send out a verbal SOS to Todd, he saw the blonde from the bench spring out before him.

Thank you, God. Maybe it wasn’t exactly how he wanted to meet this woman, but at least she would understand the situation, and he could finally get some help. But when he gazed up into the woman’s ready-to-kill eyes, he doubted very much that the cavalry had arrived.

“What did you do to my daughter?” she accused in that stern mother-cub-protecting-her-baby voice.

Oh, great. Her daughter. More bad PR. Now they were going to add child abuse to the headline. “Nothing,” he insisted. “Honest. Look, she just wants to go down the slide.”

The blonde folded her arms. “Well, let her, then.”

The woman’s demand gave him pause. Okay, she obviously didn’t understand his predicament any better than her kid had. “I…uh…can’t,” he said with a sheepish grin. “I’m kind of stuck. Maybe a little help?” He waved his one free arm, but she looked at it as though it were covered with warts.

“Maybe I should call the police for help instead,” she said, drawing her daughter to her side.

“No police!”

The woman flinched from his outburst. He didn’t mean to freak out on her, but the police equaled the press in his book. Then bad headlines. Then unhappy agent. Then less work. The list went on.

He cleared his throat. “No police, please,” he repeated more calmly. “In fact, don’t call anyone.”

An odd expression—somewhere between nausea and hysteria—crossed her pretty features, and she grabbed her daughter’s hand. “Let’s go.”

Go? Go where? He watched in disbelief as the woman began to lead her daughter away. Did she think he was faking it? Didn’t she recognize him? The woman was actually turning her back on him.

“Wait!” he shouted. “I’m not kidding! Come back! What about me?”

His complaints and shouts didn’t even register on her radar. The woman had to have heard him—heck, upstate New York had to have heard him—but she didn’t turn around. Didn’t so much as pause. In fact, she picked up her little girl and ran.

Excerpt:

Tessa walked outside, maintaining her happy expression past the knot of smokers by the door. This wedding shouldn’t bug her so much. Brian had gotten over his crush on her years ago. Shit, he’d been married before. She’d fallen off his pedestal a long time ago.

So why did this marriage seem like the end of the world?

Suzi made a beautiful bride. One of her friends had designed the simple white gown for her. Ribbons of rainbow colors started as faint pastels across the bust and gained intensity as they wrapped around her body and down the back of her dress until they formed a brilliant train. Daisies wound through her upswept hair and complemented her pretty, sweet face. Brian looked rather sharp, too, in his white tux, open at the throat. His best accessory, though, had to be the expression of utter joy in his eyes.

It made Tessa want to puke. Not because they were happy. No, never that. Brian deserved to be happy. Suzi did, too. Apparently, everyone deserved to be happy. Except her.

“Nice show, huh?”

Tessa glanced at Brett who’d wandered up beside her at the overlook. Or maybe she’d wandered up beside him. The ocean smashed into the cliffs below as if it held a grudge against her. “Yeah. They look really happy.”

“She’s the Holy Grail,” Brett said. He leaned on the guardrail, fiddling a cigarette between his fingers. “She was a total mess when she left Logan last year. I took her out to this place I go to. Never laid a hand on her.”

Tessa nodded. Why did he think she should care? Everybody knew he’d pulled Suzi out of the party where she’d broken up with her last boyfriend, Logan, nearly a year ago. Tessa had been one of many people trying to figure out where the hell they’d gone for weeks before Suzi had reappeared at Jason’s West Virginia place. “You’re a big damn hero.”

“Something like that.” He flicked the cigarette off the cliff, unlit. “Brian’s a good guy, right? He’ll be good to her, won’t he?”

“I’ve known him since he was a kid. He’d walk through hell for her.” Brian was the best guy. Absolute heart of gold. If she’d been half awake ten years ago, she could have had that.

“Good. That’s good. Cause next time I have to haul her away from some asshole, I’m not going to be so easygoing about letting her leave.”

She glared at Brett, but he looked like he’d been dragged backward through the desert by a tour bus, and she faltered. “What’s wrong with you?”

Brett turned, stared at the ocean. “Probably the same thing that’s wrong with you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Oh, come on. How dumb do you think everybody is? You’ve known Brian since he was in elementary school. His daughter is named after you. The only person at this wedding who looks sicker about it is Logan.” Brett bobbed his head. “And maybe me. You and Brian had a thing, or you wish you had a thing, or something. I’d say I could write a great song about it, but there’s already been a bunch. Etta James did three or four.”

“So, are you telling me that party-hearty Brett Cherney lost his poor little heart to the bride?” Tessa meant to smirk, but it came out twisted because of the sob she was trying to cover.

“Only as much as tough lawyer Tessa Callisto lost her heart to the groom.”

Tessa stared back in the direction of the pavilion. Over six hundred guests. This wedding was almost as well attended as the Grammys. No point hiring a band because no local band could hold a candle to this audience, so music had been supplied by a running jam. Everyone was having a blast. They wouldn’t notice a couple of people missing.

“You know what the best cure for a broken heart is, don’t you?”

“What?” He glanced over his shoulder as if the answer to her question was back at the wedding reception.

She stared into Brett’s eyes. Brett, who slept with every female who caught his fancy. And there were lots of those. What with his lean build and washboard abs, he was such a very good-looking specimen. “Wanna?” She arched an eyebrow at him.

His lips curled into a smile. “Sounds good to me.”

“Your place or mine?”

The Bad Decision Legacy

by Morgan Kay

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The Men of Machismo series revolves around nine friends who worked together in a male revue. Each book follows the life of a different former dancer seven years later. The Bad Decision Legacy is Will and Tonya’s story.

Tonya’s psychotic ex is stalking her. Not the best time to meet men, still her best friend begs her to show up for blind date dinner. Her plan includes the meet and greet, then heading home. Of course, she never expected a man who sent every hormone in her body into high alert. Will looked like her next bad decision.

Will’s work as a divorce lawyer included discouraging embittered women from ramming their soon to be exes with the car or setting fire to their husband’s latest girlfriend. No wonder he fell hard for Tonya. The first woman he met with no agenda, well almost none. It’s obvious Tonya is knee deep in trouble, but refuses to ask for help. Instead of running the other way, he contemplates dashing into the tornado she refers to as her life. With any luck, he might survive.

Excerpt:

The bold font stood out catching her eye as she scrolled down her work email, SURPRISE; it announced, stopping her in the action of deleting it. It wasn’t the subject heading, but more the sender name, Clint Fairweather, her ex. At one time, his name signaled a desirable man in her mind. That was before she knew him and some of his bizarre tendencies.

The blinking cursor hovered over the delete button. Most of the time she trashed his messages, never reading them. Technically, the message shouldn’t have even made it in her mailbox due to being blocked. Then again, her misfortune lay in having a mean-spirited ex-boyfriend who also was a computer genius. Yay me, I sure know how to pick them.

Tonya’s shoulders hunched forward. God, she didn’t need this now. Her company was looking at personnel to cut since they’d failed to make projected goals this year. It didn’t matter that she worked harder than almost anyone in the department. No company wanted an employee with a stalker ex. News stories illustrated that they tended to come with guns blazing, taking out not only the object of their obsession, but a half of dozen innocent people in the process.

Her first instinct was to send the email to the cyber dumpsite with the many dozens he’d sent the past year. Something stopped her. This one was different. It felt as if ice-cold water splashed down her back.

Wincing, she opened the document that was tying her insides into knots. An impressively long list of things to do left her with no time to dither about a whiny letter from her ex. Besides, then she’d know what it said. Wrinkling her nose, she glanced around the room, noticing her workmate’s failure to arrive.

Michelle lived in a different time zone, a much later one. Oh well, she rolled her eyes. This time she didn’t mind her co-worker’s tardiness. An overabundance of fruity fragrance wafted around Michelle, similar to her personal atmosphere. A quick glance at the open door assured her she’d smell or hear Michelle before she arrived. Tonya opened a file, ready to switch the screen when her co-worker finally arrived. With jobs on the line, she trusted no one.

The open document mocked her with one sentence. I bet your boss would enjoy seeing this, as would everyone else in your company. That was it. Where were the platitudes about her letting go of the best thing she ever had, and how she’d never find a man as wonderful as him? Wait. See what?

Michelle’s voice floated down the hallway as she stopped to talk to the custodian. Tonya’s eyes flicked down the email to notice it had an attachment. Damn. Her heart jumped up into her throat. She had to know what bomb Clint was going to drop on her. Her co-worker’s cheerful chatter showed no sign of winding down. Click.

Sometimes the past should stay there…

The murder is one of the most heinous Brandon Fisher has ever seen, but that’s not why it has his and his colleagues’ attention. The FBI’s interested because the prime suspect is one of their own, Paige Dawson.

But Paige didn’t go to Valencia, California to kill anyone. She had set out on “vacation”—her new lover in tow—only to confront the man who had raped her friend twenty-some years ago. While the hands of the law are tied, she wants him to face the fact that he destroyed a young woman’s life and know that, as an FBI agent, she’ll be watching his every move. But instead of accomplishing her goal, she wound up in the back of a police cruiser.

Now Paige must face off with a hard-nosed detective determined to stick a murder charge to a fed. But with the trained eyes of the FBI on the case, it’s becoming more and more obvious that the evidence lends itself to a serial killing, not an isolated incident. And as long as the local authorities are focused on Paige, the real murderer is still out there, possibly waiting to strike again…

Excerpt:

MONDAY, AUGUST 24TH, 11:10 PM PACIFIC TIME

CANYON COUNTRY, CALIFORNIA

THE MARK WAS IN HIS FORTIES, had no kids, and worked a white-collar job. Average height, average looks. Nothing was truly memorable about him except for his uncommon first name, and that was only because it belonged to a character from a popular eighties movie.

Ferris Hall.

She had followed him to some honky-tonk in Canyon Country, an unsavory location at any time of day, but factor in the late hour and it was even worse. But Ferris had chosen this dive as his hunting ground. Women were easier to lure in with a little chemical persuasion, and that was easy to pass off around here.

He entered the bar with head held high, his back straight, the tease of a smirk on his lips—the end of the evening a foregone conclusion in his mind. He was sipping on his first bourbon, though he was acting as if he was on his third by slurring his words and talking loudly. He’d even thrown a sway into his swagger. Somehow he always managed to make his eyes look bloodshot, too, furthering the charade. And the women would come. And the women would fall for his tricks.

Tonight, she’d be that woman, but she’d be his last. He had to learn there was a price to pay for his actions.

She was sitting down the bar from him. Occasionally, he’d pass her a look—the predatory kind that made her blood boil. She smiled at him, doing her best to convey carnal hunger with her gaze, smearing on a seductive curve to her lips. She dipped her finger into her manhattan and sucked on it—the cherry juice sweet, the whiskey bitter.

Ferris was off his stool and sidling up her to within three seconds.

The ruse worked every time. It also helped that she exploited what nature had given her—a slender frame and shapely legs. High heels accentuated her well-defined calf muscles, and men stared when she walked into a room. When she paired even higher stilettos with a short skirt and crossed her legs, men’s mouths tended to fall open. She utilized all these virtues tonight.

She flashed another sultry smile, and he lifted his glass toward her before tilting his own back and draining it. He set it back on the bar and knocked on it to get the bartender’s attention.

“I’ll have another on the rocks and—” he rolled his head toward her “—get the lady whatever she’d like.”

Time to feign innocence and flattery.

She waved a dismissive hand in his direction. “I really shouldn’t.”

She saw the quick look he gave her glass before meeting her eyes again. “Nonsense. Please, it would be my treat.”

If she stripped his voice of its candy-coated tone, his words were pushy and controlling.

“Well”—she angled her glass, showing how little of her drink she had left—“only if you’re sure.”

If she had actually been given a chance to prove her acting skills, she could be living in a sprawling mansion by now.

“Absolutely. What will it be?” Ferris asked, a grin teasing his lips as he tugged down on his left earlobe. It wasn’t hard for her to figure out what was going on. Ferris was asking for something “special” to be added to her drink—the “special” being some kind of date-rape drug.

She lifted her glass to the bartender. “Another manhattan.”

“Coming right up.” The tender left to make their drinks, and she watched him, taking the time to calm her heartbeat and flow of adrenaline.

“I like a woman who can handle her whiskey.” Ferris was looking quite comfortable beside her now. He was fully facing her, his left elbow perched on the counter, and he wasn’t discreet about his drifting gaze, which gravitated to her thighs.

“What can I say? I’m a little whiskey girl.” The words from the country song rolled off her tongue, cinching her gut, but she had to do what was necessary to pull him in.

“Toby Keith,” he said.

“Pardon?”

“Toby Keith.” He pointed to a speaker on the ceiling. “The singer who sings that one.”

“Ah, yes.” And here, she thought she was doing well by knowing it was even a country song. She smiled at him again. He truly thought of himself as a woman’s man.

Pathetic.

“Have I seen you here before?” he asked.

She dipped her head.

“I knew it. I never forget a beautiful face. So what’s your name?”

“Names really aren’t important, are they, baby?” She extended her hand, her long, narrow fingers bowing before him in feminine elegance.

“Oh, she’s mysterious. I like it.” He kissed the back of her hand, and she was proud of herself for not rolling her eyes.

The bartender returned and placed their drinks in front of them. “Here you go.”

From her observations, Ferris seemed to keep a running tab here. Rape now, pay later?

Oh, and Ferris would pay…

“You never told me your name,” she said, falling into her role.

“Oh, I can tell you mine, but you can’t—”

“Uh-huh.” She sucked on the tip of her finger again.

“Ferris.” He still held onto her other hand, and she pulled it back shyly.

“Are you from around here?” she asked, resorting to the necessity of small talk.

“I just fly in from time to time for business.”

“Ah.” She’d have to call upon her acting skills for this performance. She knew he lived less than three miles away from this place. “What business?”

He tapped his jacket pockets, then slid a hand inside one. “How embarrassing. I don’t have any cards with me. Besides, I don’t really want to bore you. Why don’t we talk about you?” He leaned toward her and lifted his rocks glass. “To a fun night.”

“To one we won’t remember.”

They toasted, and he took a long pull of the amber liquid. She pressed her own glass to her lips and pretended to take a sip.

My interview with Carolyn Arnold:

What do you think is the best way to publish these days?

I believe this is a personal preference. Being self-published definitely takes an entrepreneurial mindset if you want to meet with success. For some, the thought of managing their marketing and budget—just a couple key areas—can be very overwhelming. As a self-published author you need to make decisions about everything, each step of the way: editors, formatting, cover design, and the list goes on.
What are your favorite genres to read? Why?

I love reading mysteries and thrillers because I love the suspense that comes with the genre and I like to see if I can figure out whodunit.

Do your characters talk to you?

Yes, in a matter of fashion. Not in the “I’m crazy” sort of way, but their “voice” can hit me and then I need to write a certain scene.

How do you approach starting a new book?

At the beginning of the year, I set out a release schedule so I know what I have to write and when to reach that goal. This allows time, too, of course, for editing and working with a professional for a few rounds.

When it comes to sitting down to write the book itself, with my murder mysteries, I know how the person was killed and have an idea as to motivation. The who isn’t something I always know setting out. In fact, there have been times I thought I had only to find out it was someone else.

What is your writing process?

I write organically, meaning that I go with the flow. I write as if I’m watching a movie play in my mind. I pick the strongest point-of-view in which to share the scene to my readers.

There are times that I’ve sat down to write not even having an idea what the next scene would be, and like magic, the words flow.

What are your non-writing hobbies, or what do you do to relax?

Relax, is that something people do? LOL I find it so hard to “turn off,” but I love reading, going to the beach to hear the waves lap against the shore, watching movies, going out for nice dinners, traveling, and doing new things. Let’s not discount trips to the spa for a massage, manicure or pedicure.

What was your best date ever?

I’ll go with the first date—and only real date—I had with the man who became my husband. We’ve been married twenty years to-date and are still going strong!

We had known each other for about a year and half before the relationship changed to a romantic one. He took me to the CN Tower as I’d always wanted to go up and look down. We ended up grabbing lunch at the base of the tower and I chose Taco Bell. I ordered a burrito and they stuffed it so full, I took one bite and… You guessed it, the stuffing spilled out everywhere. What a mess! He rushed to get a handful of napkins. I don’t think either of us will forget that time.
Navy SEAL or cowboy?

Oh, tough and it would depend on my mood. Whether I was feeling bad-ass or down-to-earth. I definitely have a thing for a fit man in a white navy uniform.
Chocolate or chips?

Chocolate chips, can that be my answer? LOL Okay, gun to my head, chocolate.

If you could have a superpower what would it be? Why?

To operate fully and functional on no sleep. Can you imagine what a person could accomplish? How much of a difference they could make in the world?

Fancy restaurant or picnic?

I’ll go with fancy restaurant as I don’t recall the last time I had a picnic.

Beer or wine?

Again, depends on my mood. If I’m out at a nice restaurant or relaxing at home, usually wine. If I’m sitting on a patio or having a lunch out with hubby, a beer.

Favorite author?

I have a few. To pick one right now, I’ll say Janet Evanovich.
Smooth or hairy?

I guess it would depend on what we’re talking about here! LOL I love some hair on a man’s chest, but I don’t want a rug on his back!

Excerpts from a couple of books included in this boxed set:

SANDS OF SEDUCTION

She took a deep breath; was there ever a good time? She must do it; accept it, not hide away anymore. Right now she needed a roof over her head and a job far away from the taunts and stares.

Clary heard the letterbox of the front door, snap shut. The post, it was never ending; every day she gathered up over half a dozen envelopes and yet more leaflets, more dead trees. As she slammed the spam into the recycle bin, a glossy photo caught her eye. Her heart leapt, just what she was looking for; a cottage for sale in a picturesque hamlet, nestling at the foot of a forest in the South Downs. It was half way across the country, but the further the better. She frowned reading the message, maybe it was just a general advert, but it seemed personal.

Delighted you are reading this. I invite you to make an appointment as soon as possible. Your dream cottage by the sea is waiting for you; within easy reach of Brighton and London.

Phone or email Cecil Partridge now, don’t hesitate.

02890 760723 cpartridge@tellomail.co.uk

After pouring a fresh cup of coffee, she picked up the leaflet, taking it to the small dining room, serving as an office. Sitting at the PC, she bent to stroke the head of her white retriever, gazing up at her with those brown soulful eyes. ‘Would you like to live by the beach? Run on the sands, swim in the sea?’

Lila raised her head, with a huge smile, a pink tongue lolling out of her black lips. ‘Yes you would wouldn’t you. Okay – let’s do it. Right now.’ Clary googled ‘MoveNow’, the best website for buying and selling houses or apartments. She tried to swallow the hurt; it seemed so strange searching for property without Theo by her side. It was impossible to ban the memories, the grief. Clenching her teeth, she rubbed away the tears stinging her eyes; dread welled up. Fight it Clary, fight it. Her chest tightened, as she forced herself to search the list of properties for sale. After only a few seconds of scrolling along, she recognized the hamlet. There was more information on the list; it was near a medieval market town with an ancient castle. The tiny village was a picture postcard, composed of cottages either side of a cobbled street, with a village store. The price was low and within her range. It was all she needed or wanted.

Dark Wolf

She believed in magick and witchcraft, but people turning into animals? That was insane. “That’s not possible.”

“I’m going to show you something and I don’t want you to freak out.” Callen slid off the chair. “Whatever I do, know I will not harm you. Don’t panic at what you’re about to see.” He stepped away from the table and closed his eyes, seemed to be concentrating on something very serious.

Miranda folded her arms. MacHendrie might have a good heart, and a hot bod, but the guy was definitely missing a few marbles upstairs.

Cal hunched. His hands shifted form, changed into paws. His entire body morphed. In a matter of mere seconds her sexy Scot had shifted into…a wolf. A real live, fur-covered wolf. His clothes were nowhere to be found, vanished just as had Callen’s human form.

Her heart skipped a bit. And not in a good way.

She inched off the chair.

“Don’t fear me, Miranda. I won’t bite.”

Oh. My. God. “How did you do that?”

“It’s called morphing”

“No, not the physical thing, the getting into my head part.”

“I just changed from human form into wolf and all you want to know is how can I get into your head? Aren’t you curious about the wolf part or anything else?”

“I would like to know how old you are.”

I’m immortal. I’ve lived for more than a thousand years.”

“You don’t look a day over twenty-eight, twenty-nine.”

It’s just the way things work with us.”

She took a few steps forward and held out her hand, ran the tips of her fingers over Cal’s now gray-haired head.

He nipped at her wrist. “Hey, you said you didn’t bite.”

“No. I said I wouldna bite. There’s a difference. And that was a nip, not a bite.”

She inched back and thought about what she’d just witnessed. If she could believe Jarle capable of capturing her heart’s aura in a locket, why not believe Callen MacHendrie could shift form? “The memory of me having paws for hands and feet. Do you think that was real or was Jarle just messing with my mind on that one?”

“You’re my mate, Miranda. I know it for fact. You’re as much wolf as am I, but I believe you are also half-witch. Your grandmother was a witch.”

It was nice to know something of her roots. But this whole wolf business intrigued her more for the moment. “Are we humans who can take wolf form or the other way around? And how old do you think I am? As old as you? Am I immortal too?”

“Humans who can shift into wolf. But the other kind do exist. As for your age, Vidar says you’re a new wolf. You’ve only been here for twenty-seven years. But yes, you’re immortal.”

The thrill of excitement thrummed through her body. She could never go back to Jarle now. She wanted to know about the MacHendrie wolves and their magickal world of shifting. “Teach me to take wolf form.”

“Morphing canna be taught. It must be brought about from the core of your soul.”

“Oh.” She frowned. “There’s no way I’ll ever be able to do it. I just can’t wrap my head around the dynamics, despite now believing it possible.”

“I’m sure you’ve done it before. Before Jarle came into your world. You’ll do it again, when you’re ready.”

Her gaze traveled to his hind right leg. A nasty pink scar ran down the length of it and no fur grew around it. “Is that scar the reason you use a cane?”

“It is. Jarle struck me with my own sword and then cursed both my wound and the weapon. It’s why I conceal the sword in the cane, so no one can touch its tainted magick.”

She reached over and trailed her fingers down the furless stretch of leg. “Jarle is a bastard. How could he have done this to you?” Now she knew why MacHendrie must have tried to kill the Viking witch. She’d have gone after Jarle too, if he’d jammed a sword into her leg. The pain Callen endured had to have been horrific.

A whine escaped Cal’s mouth.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“It’s okay. Just a bit tender to the touch. Though I must admit, the feel of your hand warms the scar and that’s never happened before.”

“Maybe we can work on it. I’ve formulated numerous salves in Jarle’s potting shed, several specifically for soothing sore muscles. If Rhys can get the ingredients, I can recreate them here.”

“I’ll talk to him.” Callen turned around and padded across the room, his wolf body disappearing behind the table.

“Where are you going?”

“To shift back.”

“Why are you hiding?”

He gave a low growl.

“Callen?”

“This was not a planned morph, Miranda. I will be naked when I change back.”

She rounded the table.

“A bit of privacy, please.”

“This coming from the same man who didn’t seem to mind taking in a good view of my breasts yesterday. Where was the privacy there?”

“Touché. But this is different. I will be fully naked.”

“And your point being?”

Callen growled again, a low guttural noise that sounded more annoyed than angry. “There is a kilt in the wardrobe on the far wall, in a box on the top shelf. Please bring it to me.”

“A polite wolf. Now that’s something I would have never expected.”

“Just bring the kilt, wumman.”

Miranda headed for the wardrobe. “You’re also a testy little dog.”

“Do not call me a dog.”

“You certainly bark orders like one. I hope you don’t expect me to cook dinner every night because that won’t be happening. I’m more a microwave chick.”

“Planning on sticking around, are you?”

“Crap. I didn’t mean to say that out loud.”

“Too late.”

She returned, kilt in hand, and froze. “What am I supposed to do now? I think it might be too heavy to drape over you.”

“You think me that weak?”

“No, but…”

“Just leave it on the floor.”

She placed the blue plaid garment at Cal’s feet.

“Now turn around. Please.”

“You are such a prude. I really didn’t expect that from you.”

Callen remained silent on the matter.

A few seconds later she felt the touch of his hand on her shoulder. She spun around. Her sexy Scot was back.

Miranda licked her lips, her gaze taking in the whole of Cal’s naked torso, from his ripped chest to his bulking biceps. The man was more gorgeous without clothes than she had imagined. “You really need to get a velvet-draped, four-poster bed.”

“Need? I already have one.”

“Get, out.” She slapped him on the chest. A playful little pat.

He pulled her close.

The aroma of bergamot filled her space, a note of clove topping it off. She ran her hand over his chest, brought her head to rest against his shoulder. “You smell incredible.”

“It’s my wolf scent and only you can detect it.” Callen lifted her chin with his finger. Lowering his head, he brushed his lips against hers.

Heat warmed Miranda’s body. The taste of fresh lime lingered on her tongue, coated her mouth as Cal’s tongue danced with hers. Callen MacHendrie was a man she could easily fall into bed with, maybe even love.

Excerpt from Be Mine This Christmas Night ~ L. A. Sartor

On a cold snowy night . . . .

At Jenny’s quizzical look, Annie told the truth. “That was my new neighbor.”

“Seriously? Wow. What did you do to put a scowl on that gorgeous face?”

“Why would you think I’d done something?”

Annie grinned at her friend’s raised brow. “Celebrate the season with lights? Be an author his son loves? Be a woman? I have no idea.”

Jenny pursed her lips and started ladling out the cider, taking the job from Annie.

As Annie left the cover of the carport to mingle and enjoy the lights, she called back, “And he’s a widower,” smiling wider when Jen’s eyes grew large and her friend waggled her brows. Despite Jenny’s obvious insinuation that her neighbor was yummy and maybe available, Annie had no intention of finding out. Josh was adorable, and she’d love having him visit, but Cole? Not so much.

MediaKit_BookCover_TheSecretDoor

 Excerpt:

Zoltan stepped into the middle of the area, surveying his surroundings. Sophia placed her candle next to the one on the table.

“Eat, Lord Kristos, the sunset is approaching,” said Rita.

Zoltan glanced at Sophia, then Rita, accepting the inevitable, and sat at the table.

“We’ve got blankets, extra candles, tea, and some food. Rita will help me tonight.”

Sophia sat on the cot next to the glass door.

Zoltan shoveled the meal into his mouth. “The room is small.”

“It’s also safe. Your arm isn’t completely healed, and you won’t be able to put much

weight on it as a wolf.”

For a moment he stared at Sophia intently. “I suppose I’ll suffer some discomfort

tonight.”

“Some — I don’t doubt you’ll be restless, but trust us. I’ve got some ointment to help.”

Zoltan pushed the empty plate away. “I’m not used to being with humans as a wolf — only

Inna.”

Sophia left the cot and approached him. Stopping before Zoltan, she held out her hand.

“I’ll keep you warm and safe.”

He clasped her fingers tightly, looking up into her eyes. “Let me smell you.”

She nodded. He sniffed her shoulder, then her wrist. Sophia found the gesture very

animalistic, yet pleasurable despite herself. Satisfied, he turned to Rita. “The wolf is instinctual. It is hard to focus on human thoughts. I must smell your scent as a human to know you mean no harm to me as a wolf.”

Rita stepped forward, and despite the apprehension on her face, she held out her wrist. Zoltan drew in her scent, then released her hand. He walked over to the glass and placed his hands on the frame, staring out onto the growing shadows.

“What’s wrong?” asked Sophia.

“The transformation is close. I feel the blood rushing through my veins.”

Sophia steeled her resolve. He stepped away from her and pressed his back against the

wall. The candlelight fell across his face, creating stark shadows over his high cheekbones. He looked like the devil come to life. Sweat trickled over his brow.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

She will help get his independent professional baseball team up and running before the inaugural season, and then … she will sell the team to recoup his substantial investment. It’s a tall order, but Rachel knows one thing for sure: a sexy nuisance from her past and a few acres of trees won’t stand in her way.

Former minor-leaguer-turned-landscaper Sam Sutter is surprised to find his brother’s ex in the woods behind the house he bought when he cashed out his signing bonus and said so long to baseball. He’s even more surprised to learn “his” trees are on her chopping block. There’s no way he’ll desecrate his nature-loving mother’s memory by letting that happen. But butting heads with the beautiful business woman is a tricky task that leads Sam to accept a position as head groundskeeper at her father’s stadium. Working under Rachel’s watchful, smoldering eyes might be Sam’s undoing.

She doesn’t know a thing about baseball. He swore off the sport ten years ago. But strange things happen when field dust gets in your veins.

The Change Up Cover

Excerpt:

She thought about that for a minute, thought about him, standing there, looking at her like she was the only woman in the world, and the heat was undeniable. The attraction unmistakable. Sam Sutter was a mouth-wateringly beautiful man. Five years younger and without a discernible life plan, but damn it, libidos didn’t care about those things. And honestly, the only thing holding her back from taking out all her recent frustrations on his blessed body right now was the fact his crew was just outside the leftfield wall.

To neutralize the lust bubbling in her veins, she asked, “Do you miss baseball?”

He looked broadsided by the random question and didn’t rush to answer.

“I know that came out of left field …” she grinned at her cleverness, “but I’ve been wondering about it ever since the festival. When my dad was asking you about baseball, you looked very uncomfortable.”

His gaze shifted away from her and anchored onto something in the grandstand, but then he shrugged like she hadn’t hit a nerve. “I was uncomfortable because I was worried about your father. I wasn’t sure what was going on. That’s all.” But his jaw pulsed, and she knew better.

“Sam …” She stepped closer, narrowing the space between them. “I saw that same look a minute ago when I asked you to help me out with the coaching prospects. You miss baseball. It’s okay to admit it. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be human. God, you played every year of your life until you were how old? Just because you were ready to hang it up professionally doesn’t mean you don’t miss the game personally.” He looked at her then with a hurt in his eyes that seemed to be saying maybe he wasn’t as ready to hang it up as he pretended to be.

“I miss some things more than others,” he said. “There’s a rush you get from playing the game.” Silence stretched out between them as the warm wind wrapped them in the sun-dried fragrances of spring. All the while, his eyes roamed her face until they focused on her lips. “Fortunately you can get that rush from other things.”

“Like?” she asked, breathlessly, knowing damned well she was encouraging him.

“This,” he whispered before he leaned in and kissed her, a brush of his lips, soft as the breeze that carried the heated scent of his skin to her nose and then to her brain.

Elley Arden

Author Bio:

Elley Arden is a born and bred Pennsylvanian who has lived as far west as Utah and as far north as Wisconsin. She drinks wine like it’s water (a slight exaggeration), prefers a night at the ballpark to a night on the town, and believes almond English toffee is the key to happiness.

Elley has been reading romance novels since she was a sixteen-year-old babysitter, sneaking Judith McNaught and Danielle Steele novels off the bookshelves of the women who employed her. To say she’d been sheltered up to that point is an understatement. No one had ever told her women could live bold, love freely, and have sex lives that were exciting and fulfilling. (They don’t teach these things in Catholic school!) Now that she knows, she’s happy to spread the word. The women she writes about may be fictional, but the success, respect, and love they find on the page is a universal right for women everywhere.

Elley writes books with charming characters, emotional stories, and sexy romance. Visit The Bookshelf for a detailed listing.

You can also visit her online at the following places: Website Facebook | Twitter Goodreads | Amazon

Elley took a moment out of her busy schedule to sit down and answer a few questions on her writing process with us today. Thanks for stopping by, Elley!

  1. What do you think is the best way to publish these days?

The best way to publish is whichever way is best for you, the writer. We all come into this for different reasons with different goals and different personalities. Both traditional publishing and self-publishing have their positives and negatives. “The best way” to publish these days is in a well-informed manner that empowers you. If you try one way, and it doesn’t work, don’t be afraid to try another.

  1. What are your favorite genres to read? Why?

I’ve been a reader of contemporary romances since I was in my late teens. I like the modern-day setting, the relatability, and the feeling that these people could pass me on the street at any given moment. I also like historical non-fiction. I’ve been fascinated by the world’s power struggles for as long as I can remember. Royal history is my absolute favorite.

  1. How do you approach starting a new book?

With each new idea, there is an initial burst of excitement that is hard to contain. The characters and the potential storylines invade my mind and make it very difficult for me to concentrate on anything else. (Ask my family. Whatever they say goes in one ear and out the other.) But then reality crashes in, and I know I need a reasonably complete outline to stave off the panic that happens at the mid-point of every book. I then spend several sometimes unenthusiastic days working on this outline and character sketches. After that, the actual writing begins.

  1. What is your writing process?

My strongest work comes when I’m in a sort of symbiotic relationship with my characters. If I can feel when they are feeling, then I know I’m on the right track. I spend a lot of time listening in on their conversations in my mind, and then I analyze those conversations for deeper insight into their personal issues. Honestly, it’s sort of crazy how it works, and so much of my “writing” is done off the page.

  1. What are the best writing books or blogs you’ve ever read?

I love Steven King’s On Writing, Donald Maass’s The Fire in Fiction, and Jenny Crusie’s blog posts on writing romance. So much good information there!

This week’s excerpt comes from our team captain, Rachelle Ayala. Without her prodding guiding us along this set wouldn’t be the same, so thank you, Rachelle!

After Jolie Becker is left at the altar, her friends secretly hire a hunky beach bum to cheer her up.

Excerpt:

When she came out of the bathroom, Nikki was no where in sight. Someone knocked on the door.

“Room service,” a male voice called.

“Nikki?” Jolie scanned the empty room. Her stomach growled at the memory of the uneaten steak. She crossed the room and opened the door.

Ken stood there, all blond, tanned, and smiling with a bouquet of fresh flowers and a silver platter. “I came to see if you’re okay. I’m so sorry.”

“Sorry about the kiss?” She let him in. “Or that we didn’t finish.”

“Definitely the latter, if you’re all right.” His blue-gray eyes twinkled. “But first, my lady. Flowers and food.”

“You didn’t have to,” Jolie said, even as her heart swelled with joy. She took the flowers, a fiery orange collection of orchids and lilies. “Where’s Carol? Did you leave her alone?”

“She’s playing gin rummy with Nikki. Seems they have a lot in common.” He moved into the room and set the platter on the table. “Sorry, no wine. I figured they gave you medicine for your allergies.”

“You’re really too kind.” Jolie rubbed her hands which still itched. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

“Other than the obvious reason?” Ken feathered his fingers over her shoulders. “You’re not only gorgeous, but you’re strong and brave, and I want to get to know you better. Will you let me be your honeymoon date?”

Jolie giggled and her heart did a cartwheel. “You make me sound like a cheater. Whoever heard of a honeymoon date?”

“Fine, then, honeymoon hunk, but that would be too arrogant, wouldn’t it?”

“Honeymoon honey.” She tapped his nose. “Sure beats the bittermoon I was on before I met you.”

He closed in, slanting his head. “Don’t worry, I washed the peanuts out of my mouth.”

“Then what are you waiting for, honeymoon honey?”

“Hunk,” he muttered right before their lips touched.

Jolie closed her eyes and leaned into the kiss. She carefully wrapped her hands around his broad shoulders and inhaled his sweet, minty breath. Even after her brush with death, she felt safe and protected in his arms.

As soon as their lips were pressed together, heat rushed through her like the gas jets in a hot air balloon. Lazily, she swept her tongue across the seam of his lips and sighed into his mouth. Kissing him was like a fairy tale dream, where colors brightened and music chimed. She, who had been numb, picture perfect, plastic, was now alive and awake, in the embrace of her delicious prince.

Somewhere in the fuzzy parts of her mind, a voice told her she was behaving badly—that she was Warren’s fiancée and that she wasn’t fast—not at all. She never threw herself at men, especially a stranger she met at a hotel. How sleazy did that sound?

But the tender way Ken kissed her, as if he cherished her, the way he moved slowly, savoring her like fine wine, drew tears like raindrops from a sunny sky. She should be floating with happiness. She was still desirable, wanted, and even admired.

It wasn’t just how hot he was physically, but the way he cared for her and her welfare. She didn’t deserve how considerate he was. She was a woman men left at the altar, and if he really knew how obsessive she was with her schedules, lists, and restrictions, he’d be gone too.

Wetness flowed down her cheeks and she hoped Ken wouldn’t notice, that he’d keep the sweet nibbles going—that he’d overlook the things she lacked compared to other women—qualities no amount of makeup, which she wasn’t wearing, could cover.

“What’s wrong?” He kissed a tear from her cheek. “Are you feeling blue?”

“It’s those blue memories. I’m sorry, it’s not you.” Jolie hastily wiped a tear. What was wrong with her? She could spoil a romantic evening, not once, but twice. “Did you and Carol see the end of the show?”

“I stayed because you made me promise to stay, but I wanted to be with you.” He wiped the corner of her eye. “Am I making you uncomfortable by coming on so fast?”

“No, I love kissing you. I don’t want this to stop. Bet you think I’m this crazy, needy chick who got dumped at the altar.”

“That’s not what I’m seeing.” He twisted a strand of her hair around his finger and swept it over her ear. “You don’t know how grateful I am you’re not married. That was a close call, I’d say.”

“One door closes and another one opens?”

“Exactly. Are you okay with hanging around with me and Carol? How long are you staying?”

“Five days, four nights. Warren went all out for the honeymoon. It’s the only thing he spent money on. I’m lucky he used my account to set everything up.”

“Then I’m in luck, because Carol and I are also staying the same time. All here in Honolulu?”

“Yes, with day trips to the other side of the island.”

“Great. Let’s enjoy our open door.” He caressed her cheek. “No more tears.”

“I can’t promise that. I’m the tearing type. I even cry when I’m happy.”

“Then I’ll kiss them all away, every last drop.” He feathered his lips over her eyes.

Jolie shuddered. It was no use tamping down her feelings. Everything was raw, an open wound, pain and pleasure heightened, extra sensitive. After the way Warren hurt her in front of three hundred guests, what did it matter if sweet talking Ken hurt her at the end of her bitter honeymoon?

Synopsis:

The stakes have never been higher as an elite team member must outwit a dangerous killer and save the man she’s sworn to protect. The second installment of the exhilarating Safeguard series from Piper J. Drake.

Kyle Yeun didn’t start out bad and he doesn’t intend to end his life while on the wrong side of the law, either. His testimony to his former employer’s environmental misdeeds has earned him a protection detail compliments of the US government. But due to a dark international conspiracy Kyle was unaware of, his former employers have made ending his life a top priority. Excerpt:

Isabelle sighed. No wingman or cavalry coming to his aid. He needed help but it wasn’t forthcoming. This was not going to resolve in the next thirty seconds and that was all she was willing to wait. Besides, she couldn’t leave a person alone to face odds like these. She’d been on her own in these situations plenty of times and it’d never been fun.

“Gentlemen, get out of my way.”

Humor and interest sparked in the Asian man’s eyes. He understood English, apparently. Seattle being a major city for travelers, it was always good to note rather than assume a listener could understand the conversation. Especially if she might have to advise him to take action.

The hulking goon who’d originally spoken to her turned then. “What did you say?”

Maybe the English language, or conversation in general, wasn’t goon number one’s strong point.

“Get. Out. Of. My. Way.” She put some steel into her voice this time. No need to increase volume when intensity works better.

Beady eyes narrowed at her as goon number one flexed his thick fingers into a meaty fist and released them. Threat clear.

Ah, well. Intonation could work on people with more neurons firing inside their heads. She might not have a whole lot of stature going on at five foot four, but her new friend should’ve at least spared a moment to ponder that maybe a woman in a black suit with white dress shirt and an earbud hanging over her collar from a wire might mean something.

He was a thug dressed in a monkey suit.

She was a much higher pay grade.
