Before I know it, I’m a foot away from the basketball court. The players are taking a break, and Bandit stands at the edge of the concrete, taking long pulls from a water bottle. Up close, his brilliant hair looks almost purple, and his T-shirt sticks to his back in sweaty patches, hinting at his solid muscles.

Now what? Do I clear my throat? Tap his shoulder? Going for broke, I do both at the same time.

He turns and lifts his eyebrows, as though wondering how a mere mortal such as myself dares to approach him. He’s tall—really tall. Almost a head above my five feet five. His jaw is chiseled, his shoulders broad. I’m so close that I can feel the heat rising off his body.

My brain scrambles. I forgot to check if I had any food in my teeth! Did I brush my hair this morning? Put on clothes?

Okay, so clearly I’m not naked, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what I’m wearing. Please don’t let it be the navy T-shirt with the faded splotches on the shoulder, from when I accidentally added bleach instead of detergent to the laundry.

I glance down. Jeans and a white tank top—my favorite shirt because it has Lin-Manuel Miranda’s autograph. More than passable.

“I, uh…” My entire vocabulary chooses that moment to flee.

His lids lower, and he looks at me, decidedly bored. “Yes? Can I help you?”

Three, four, five of his basketball friends angle their towering bodies toward us, probably wondering what the interruption is about.

Sweat gathers at the nape of my neck, and electricity hums along my skin. The Voice is about to zap me again. I just know it.

“Running out of time,” the Voice pipes up, as if on cue. “Tell him.”

Say the words and be done with it. Say the words. Say. The. Words.

“I love you,” I blurt. “That is all. Goodbye.”

I wheel around, ready to sprint, when a hand snags my arm. His hand.

“Wait a minute,” Bandit says, his eyes 2 percent less bored. “Are we in third grade? Do you want to give me a note asking if I love you back, so I can circle yes or no?”

My cheeks burn hotter than the sun assaulting my skin. Hotter, even, than the flames that got me into this mess.

I could really use that alien abduction right about now.

The object of my supposed affection smirks. “We can skip the note. Can’t say I blame you for falling for me. I mean, I’m a lovable guy. But have we actually met?” He lowers his voice. “Outside of your wildest dreams, that is.”

My Review

The Truth Shall Set You Free!

Eight guests board a floatplane for a luxury trip into British Columbia’s wild interior. They expect to be pampered at a fancy new spa, and maybe come away with new job opportunities- what they don’t know is they are about to become pawns in a game where the only outcome is… death.

RCMP officer Mason Deniaud is transferred to the back of beyond when he goes off the rails after the loss of his wife and child. He expects to face some vandalism and speeding infractions- not a serial killer.

SAR expert Callie Sutton knows her mountains, so when a call comes in for a downed floatplane her team is called to action. She doesn’t expect the handsome, moody new cop who insists on being part of the rescue attempt- or the horrifically murdered body they find.

Callie and Mason soon learn there may be more people in danger and set out to find them with a huge storm on the horizon. But rain and snow isn’t the only hazard they will face.

This is a fast-paced, thrilling whodunit that kept me guessing until the very end. As with all of Loreth Anne White’s books, her settings are eerie and atmospheric.

The spooky lodge, secretive guests/prisoners, cryptic clues, a sinister poem, and a chessboard with pieces that keep losing their heads (literally!) all add to the mystery.

I give In The Dark 4.5 lovely kisses- dark and gritty suspense!

that's dark

My Review

Jealousy is the root of all evil

Two young sisters, Rosie and Heather Sharpe, befriend an ostracized boy and their lives are forever changed.

Rosie is older than her sister and new friend Samuel Murray. She is flamboyant and often impatient with Heather’s more mindful ways. With another long and boring summer on the way, the girls are excited to work on the Murray’s farm for seed money. This starts a relationship between Heather and Samuel that grows over the next few years.

As a teenager, Rosie’s nervous energy transmits itself into sometimes promiscuous behavior and earns her condescending looks from the villagers. None of that matters to her though, what does is her growing attraction to Samuel.

Things come to a head one night when Rosie stumbles home claiming Samuel tried to rape her. Heather is shocked and horrified and not sure who she should believe, her boyfriend or her sister?

Then Samuel goes missing.

Ten years later, Heather has returned to the village to care for her cancer-ridden mother. She reaches out the the sister she’s had little to do with for the last decade, all the while fighting the mistrust she’s carried in her heart since Samuel’s disappearance.

After their mother dies the girls begin the task of going through her things, but some of their findings raise more questions about the past. Heather is obsessed with learning the truth, but at what cost? If Rosie killed Samuel she could go to jail, and if she didn’t…

This book started out so good for me. It travels between the early years when the girls met Samuel and later, when everything falls apart. I enjoyed the tension and mystery aspect between Rosie and Heather, but it soon became repetitive. There were some questionable elements introduced about halfway through the story and from there on it just got weird for me.

The author does a good job of reeling in the reader, but in my opinion she dropped too many hooks to make this a truly great novel.

I give The Liar’s Sister 3.5 lovely kisses

MALIK

She stares at my lips and says, “Tell me a secret.” She’s smiling, even though she’s hiding behind her cup. I can tell because her eyes are twinkling.

I lean back in my chair. “What kind of secret?”

She shrugs and sets her cup down. “Everyone knows everything about you, Malik. Your life’s an open book. We know your parents, everything you do on campus, which cheerleader you date, what you eat for lunch … tell me something no one knows.”

I tug on my bottom lip as I stare at her. “I don’t want to play football anymore,” I say before realizing what a stupid idea this is.

Her jaw drops and she glances around, like she’s scared someone might’ve heard. “Malik, did you say what I think you just said?”

I nod.

“You—but you’re like, the best football player ever. You’re gonna get a scholarship! What would your dad say? Oh my gosh, he’d die. Your teammates would die! The entire school would go under.”

I hold up a hand, laughing nervously. “Okay, okay. See why I didn’t want to say anything? You’ve just described the apocalypse.”

“But why? Don’t you love football?”

I nod as a leaf flutters from the tree onto the table. “Do you have any idea how much pressure I’m under, twenty-four, seven?” I glance at her as I pick at the leaf. “So many people rely on me for so much, and … I just want to relax sometimes, you know? Just be a kid and fuck around. Take off the pressure, just do my own thing.”

“Well, what is your own thing? What would you be doing instead?”

“I don’t know, anything. I don’t want to be associated with something so severely, you know? I mean, you hear my name and you immediately think ‘football.’ I’m not allowed to be human. To make mistakes. I gotta be like a soldier, on guard at all times. And I take a lotta heat if other people fuck up, too. I—it’s just—”

I stop and look at her, and she’s assessing me. I can’t believe I just spoke all these words aloud. To another person. What have I done?

THE THIRD MRS. DURST

© 2019 Ann Aguirre

On the third day, Michael finally came home. When he did, he brought flowers. Warily I took the white roses, trying to contain my urge to flinch away from the hand that then dropped onto my head. I shivered, controlling my reaction with significant effort.

“You’re upset,” he said. “I may have overreacted, but the idea of losing you … it drives me crazy. I only reacted that way because I love you so much.”

When he put a pretty pink diamond ring on my finger to conclude the apology, I let him draw me close and rested my head on his chest, vowing not to make him feel insecure again. I’d never considered myself irresistible, but Michael clearly thought other men couldn’t see me without wanting me.

Stroking my back, he went on. “Men are animals, Marlena. You’re too innocent to understand that, and that’s why I have to fight twice as hard to keep you that way.”

I swallowed hard. What would Michael say if I told him I already knew? One of my mother’s boyfriends had shown me when I was eleven, and then later, Bobby Ray Hudgens reinforced the lesson. Before, I’d never thought those violations made me dirty, but I had no doubt my husband would feel that way. He’d probably think I was some little Lolita, seducing men with a sway of my hips.

“Oh.” It was the only sound I could make.

My lack of response didn’t matter because he was in the mood to talk. “I’ve never told you this … because I’m not proud of it, but I was married before. She … left me. And it took a long time for me to get over that.”

Left you? Is that what you’re calling it? My heart hardened into titanium, untouchable, impenetrable. But I couldn’t let on how much I already knew—about his past, and I couldn’t think on it too deeply or he might read that awareness in my expression. I understood far too well to be drawn in by diamond rings and repentant smiles.

But I kept up the pretense. “There’s never been anyone else,” I said softly.

“I do know. It’s part of what makes you perfect. But sometimes I lose the thread, and I’m sorry for that.”

It amused me to test him, though, and to see how he’d respond. “I went running in the park yesterday. Vin took me. But there was nothing personal about it.”

Michael nodded. “He gave me a full report before I came in. Now that I’ve had some time, I know you weren’t leading him on. And what happened with Will Stone, well, he’s a lecher, but that’s not your fault.”

It was tough to get the words out, but I could only cower for so long. “Next time you’re upset, if you could dial it down … I was really scared.” There, I said it.

“I’ll never hurt you,” Michael said. “You are my most precious possession, and it’s my greatest joy to protect you.”
That wasn’t what I wanted to hear. I wanted an I’m sorry, I’ll do better, like he always forced out of me. And the fact was, he had hurt me. I had a circular bruise around my wrist from where he’d hauled me around and another on my hip due to my tumble over the ottoman, deep and blue, fading to green. I bit in the inside of my lip against an instinctive protest. I’m not your possession. I’m not.

EXCERPT:

All the Gods, all the heavens, all the hells, are within you. —Joseph Campbell

“Have you ever heard the saying; ‘only the forgotten are dead’?”

The young girl shook her head. Tears welled up in her eyes, but they hadn’t fallen yet. This one was tough. She was fighting the terror that was undoubtedly coursing through her body. There was no point in fighting it; her death was inevitable.

“See, I will kill you, but if I remember you, then it’s like you’re not even dead.”

A whimper escaped from the girl. She wasn’t the first one to die, and she wouldn’t be the last. She would be the first to send a message, so her body would be the first one to be discovered unlike the others; the forgotten ones. Their bodies had been left to decay in their shallow graves never to be found. There was an added excitement knowing someone — Agent Caitlin Cade more precisely— would be staring at this girl’s dead body in just a matter of hours.

“Don’t worry baby girl, you won’t be one of them; one of the forgotten ones. You’re going to be found.”

A scream ripped through the room.

“I always like to talk during this next part. I don’t know why. The first few times I thought maybe it was just what was left of my humanity reaching out to offer comfort in the final minutes of their lives, but that’s not it. I haven’t had humanity in years.”

The knife sliced through the air, and the first cut into flesh vibrated to the depths of the killer’s soul. The feeling was orgasmic. Another cut and then another. The smell of fresh blood wafted through the room permeating every single crack and crevice. The beautiful scream that ripped from the girl’s throat was the icing on the cake. Over and over the knife cut into her flesh.

“I saw a therapist once, and she told me that my mind was like a disease. Can you believe that? Someone who went into the business of helping people told me that.”

The girl’s body was lifeless now. There was no point in checking for a pulse. Still, the desire to feel the knife tear through her flesh was uncontrollable. That was the problem with the urges. They were impossible to control. Blood sang a song like the sirens from the old tales, and there was no refusing the call.

“I already knew my mind was diseased, and I’m not going to stop until I’ve infected everyone.”

If only walls could talk, these walls would tell some very horrific stories. Stories that were filled with screams, begging and pleading, but never salvation. This room had never seen salvation.

My Review

A chilling trail of murder by a stone cold killer!

When forensic anthropologist Sara Lockhart is called out to a remote Texas gorge to investigate a burial site- little does she know it’s only the beginning of a much bigger story.

A serial killer is on the loose and he’s using Detective Nolan Hess’s community for his dumping site. He trusts Sara to uncover the evidence he needs to capture this predator, but can she do it before he strikes again?

Sara is impressed by Nolan’s dedication and deep ties to the town he protects, but their undeniable attraction to each other is a complication. She’s been hurt before and is unwilling to invest in a relationship again- besides, the timing is all wrong.

Nolan is overworked, tired, frustrated, and fast falling for the smart, sexy anthropologist. Will these two be able to work out their differences, or will a killer make the decision for them?

This book kept me on the edge of my seat! Occasional passages by a victim fighting to survive amp up the tension and had me praying right along with her. I guessed early on who the perp was, but then the author did a superb job of throwing out false leads that I changed my mind like five times, lol.

I give Stone Cold Heart five lovely kisses- Read The Tracer Series!

My Review

A desperate phone call from Becca North’s drunk father fills her with a sadness that changes to horror when she receives the news he’s committed suicide. A trip home to arrange his funeral uncovers a string of inconsistencies that soon has the RCMP officer embroiled in a past she never wanted to revisit.

Ash Haugen can’t believe Rebecca- his Becca- suspects him in the growing case proving her father was murdered for the secrets he’d uncovered. Ash had a few of those himself; ones that could ruin any chance he might have of winning her trust.

As the investigation heats up, Rebecca is forced to rethink her beliefs while fighting a growing attraction to her teenage love- Ash Haugen- her chief suspect.

Loreth does it again in this spine-tingling thriller!

We get a little reminiscing with characters from the first in the series, A Dark Lure, a whole lot of broody settings, and a cast of characters that will leave you wondering in the way of classic mystery-suspense page-turners, who-done-it?

I give The Dark Bones 5+ lovely kisses- A chilling suspense!

Thank you to Montlake and NetGalley for the opportunity.

Blue pulled at the lead. I let him off once I’d scanned the area and noted no loose dogs. Only a lone figure loitering. His eye line crossed mine as he also examined the park, and paused on me long enough to raise a creepy sensation. I moved to a bench by the play park and pretended to tie my laces. When I straightened up, the man was striding straight towards me. I searched for Blue, hoping for a semblance of protection, but he was nowhere to be seen. Nor was anyone else. Before I could stop him, the man sat down next to me. He whistled and shouted, ‘Here boy!’ then faced me with a disturbing grin. As if he knew the dog wouldn’t come. I jumped to my feet and looked around. What had he done? On the second blow of silent air through my dry mouth, Blue appeared from behind a tree thirty yard away. Safe. He showed no interest in me or the man, instead sniffing out the ground’s many treasures. I turned back to the intruder. Standing over him gave me an edge—at least I thought it did—and I raised my chin and my voice when I asked, ‘Do I know you?’ He chuckled. ‘Nah, hen. I’m only the messenger.’ ‘What?’ His smile faded. ‘We’re not very happy about you closing the café for so long. You need to open up again. There’s a delivery coming on Thursday.’ ‘What do you mean? How do you—’ His eyes turned to ice as he grabbed my wrist in a flash. ‘We’ll be very disappointed if you’re not there to receive the goods. Ken what I’m saying?’ He rushed off, his dark coat billowing behind him like a cape, almost engulfing Blue who circled his legs, tail wagging, until he turned towards the road.

Excerpt

Oh No! I’m back. I am surrounded by inky black nothingness. The air is musty…damp, my nostrils fill with the smell of dank basement. Like in a haunted house, filled with saws and chains and bloody hooks, this is the perfect place for any psycho to hide his tools of the crazy trade. I’m trembling, from the all-encompassing fear, eating at every cell in my body.Where am I? My fingers search out for clues. Beneath me is a thin mattress on a hard surface. My head rests on a concrete-like pillow. My breathing escalates as the panic rises in my chest. I open my mouth to scream, but only a muted croak escapes. Over the thunder of my pounding heart, I hear a booming crack, a gunshot. I recognize the sound from a trip to the range with Jake years earlier.

I swing my legs over the side of my perch, thinking in my blind panic to run even though I cannot see. I can’t ignore this intense urge to flee. But my impulse is thwarted by an unknown restraint trapping my left arm, a rope? Panic has me in its grip. I gasp for air to fill my lungs but produce only whimpers and muted pleas.

A loud screech reverberates through the darkness. Rats? Oh, please, no rats! Could this get any worse? Hysterical, I yank relentlessly on the rope tethering me. With each tug, the line cuts deeper into my skin. My arm warms as blood seeps from the gouges, coating my hand and fingers. Behind me, the pounding sound of footsteps startles me. Before I can turn to confront my visitor, I feel the rush of air preceding the impact to the back of my head. A blaze of bright stars then, a different blackness envelopes me.

Excerpt

Thomas walked through the granite garden, looking for an open grave. His mother’s grave. Cold air stung his face and seeped in around the collar of his coat. A chill sliced across his shoulder blades—part cold, part dread.

Trees dotted the landscape, their naked branches spearing the clouds. The sky above and the land below shared the bland, gray color he’d come to associate with winter in Ohio. Grass crunched under his feet and looked as desiccated as the bodies planted beneath it. Nothing was more depressing than a cemetery in winter. Would it look more alive with color? Was the sky really blue, while all he saw was gray? Were the gravestones a motley of different types of granite instead of the same dull color? Was there beauty here while all he witnessed was drab and dreary?

It was so frustrating not being able to see what everyone else saw. As if the world had a secret and wouldn’t share it with him. He clenched his hands into fists.

Clng. Clng. Clng. The sound of metal clanging against metal sounded loud as a church bell in the quiet cemetery.

Across the endless sea of gravestones, Thomas spotted a canopy erected to protect the mourners from the elements. The fabric flapped and snapped in the wind. A metal grommet hitting one of the legs made the endless clng, clng, clng noise. The sounds grew in volume, became unnaturally loud. He reached up to cover his ears. But before he could get his hands into place, his vision winked out. Gone. Blackness.

He just stood there. Frozen. Not from fear, but from acceptance. He was blind, and he should be freaking out. But then, blinding himself had been something he’d contemplated in his darkest moments. He’d always thought blindness would grant him an odd sort of relief. No more gray existence, no more seeing the shadow of death. Ignorance really could be bliss, right? The only thing that had kept him from following through was not wanting to be dependent on anyone for anything.

Light flashed in his dark vision like far-off lightning. His sight blinked back on. Everything was the same. But everything had changed.

He still stood in Sundew Cemetery, but it was as if everything around him had faded into the background and a spotlight gleamed on a woman in front of him.

She stood no more than fifty feet away, a beacon of light, a burning flame that he couldn’t look away from.

Her body was bundled against the cold, her thick, black coat zipped up over her mouth with the hood pulled down over her forehead. The tiny bit of skin he saw was the palest of—his mind searched for the name of the right color—pale peach. Her skin was pale peach. Pale. Peach.

Holy motherfucking son of a bitch.

He saw color. Color. She brought vibrancy to his gray existence. And she carried no shadow of death. Not even a wispy hint. If love at first sight existed, he loved her for these gifts.

At this distance, it should be impossible to see the color of her eyes, but they were gold and shining right at him, locking him in place with their brilliance, their luminescence, and some ethereal quality that made him think of purity and perfection.

Call it instinct, call it pheromones, call it instant visceral attraction—his dick went hard.

“Thomas? Are you all right?” The question he’d been asked too much lately punched him in the head, breaking his attention on her.

Sound clicked back on. He heard the canopy flapping and the metal clanging. Almost as if his body was working in slow motion, he turned his head, absorbing a world that was alive with vitality for the first time. He felt like a kid who’d just learned to name colors. Brown grass. Green canopy. Red scarf.

Audie stood outside the canopy wearing the same getup as last night. Only now Thomas could see the hat and scarf and mittens were bright red.

Thomas raised his hand in a gesture somewhere between wait-a-minute, a wave, and what-the-hell. Audie smiled, his wrinkled face conveying a wordless understanding. That was why Thomas always liked the guy. No explanations, no empty phrases needed. And it didn’t hurt that he looked like Gandalf.

Thomas turned back to the woman, but she no longer stood there. She was walking away, carrying an aura of color with her. The sky above her glowed a sweet, watery shade of blue, the grass under her feet a subtle tan, and the grave she passed was a pinkish granite. Holy shit. It was all so beautiful, but then his gaze locked on the erotic sway of her hips.

Without warning, his mind flashed him images of her in his bed and him being mesmerized by her golden eyes, her matching gilded hair, and all that creamy, warm skin surrounding him, holding him tight. Without ever seeing her face, he knew she would be beautiful, so lovely that it would hurt to gaze anywhere but upon her.

There was the before her part of his life. Now there was the after her part of his life. And he couldn’t let her go. He needed her in every sense of the word—emotionally, physically, sexually. He wanted to be underneath her, on top of her, inside her. He wanted to surround her, swallow her, take her into himself and keep her there. Forever. Always. A-fucking-men.

He ran after her, opening his mouth to shout her name, but… He didn’t know her name. Yet he felt like he should know it. And know her. She was his other piece. She completed him. Healed him. Made up for all his deficiencies.

“Thomas? What are you doing?” Pastor Audie yelled. The concern and worry riding along the old man’s tone was more effective than diving headfirst into one of the granite markers dotting the cemetery.

What was he doing? Chasing after some random woman in the cemetery who obviously had no reaction to him. If she’d felt even an ounce of the connection he had, she wouldn’t be walking away.

He stopped running. But the urge to keep going pushed him forward a few more steps. He grabbed on to a gravestone to keep from following her. His heart rammed against his sternum so hard it threatened to knock him to the ground. It hurt—physically hurt—to watch her walk away, taking color and beauty with her, leaving him alone inside his gray existence once more. It felt like she’d amputated half of his soul, leaving him with the phantom pain of what could have been. A cold heaviness settled over him. He felt as dead as the stone he clung to.

My Review

Read this one with the lights on and your doors bolted!

This was my first time reading a Karen Slaughter book and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d heard many good reports of this author’s work and no I see why.

This book is intense!

moon-3250785_640

It starts with a father’s journal account of the loss and subsequent search for his daughter, Julie, which immediately made me empathize with him and the family he lost. We learn of his sense of helplessness, his anger and most of all, his determination to find his girl. It cost him his job, his wife, and to a lesser extent, his daughters.

So very sad.

Then we’re introduced to the vastly different estranged siblings, Lydia and Claire. Each sought security after the loss of their sister in different ways, drugs for Lydia, and marriage with a ‘safe’ guy for Claire.

The sudden, violent murder of Claire’s husband, John, brings the sisters together again and sheds light on his sadistic background.

This story has so many twists and turns my heart didn’t know whether to weep with all this poor family had been through, or shiver with fear at what they were living now.

Strong, eloquent writing. To be frank, it scared the hell out of me.

If you like your thrillers dark and twisted, this book is for you.

I give Pretty Girls 5 lovely kisses

EXCERPT:

Larkin wrestled out of her red jacket, hating that it was tailored so snugly. Though that’s exactly how she’d wanted it when the world wasn’t falling down around her. The fabric slipped from her fingers as she pushed toward the raised ledge. A chill kissed her bare arms and neck. She yanked the blouse from the prim tuck at her waist and pulled the pins from her conservative chignon. Wind carried her hair away from her face. Why not her troubles too?

The low wall stopped her momentum with the unforgivingness of a thousand-foot concrete barrier. Her hands trembled so, and she dared not look over the ledge. Instead, she stared at the soldered bands of gold and diamonds on her right ring finger. It called her a fool. Bile and panic churned her insides.

Why?

She ripped her mother’s wedding set from her hand and clutched it in the center of her fist. A scream, long and brutal, ripped from her throat. It cursed the sky and the stars, the land and the water, and the blood flowing through her veins.

With rage came not only tears but also sure hands. Larkin slapped the streams from her cheek, hiked the pencil skirt as high as it would go, and hopped her almost exposed ass onto the ledge. The concrete threatened to freeze her to the spot. Carefully, she turned and faced the city. In her palm, the rings burned a hole.

Time to release the past, but first, she had to confront it.

Larkin lifted her fist into the air, reared back, and—

Imposing arms banded Larkin’s waist and yanked her from the wall. Skin and patent leather scraped across the gritty surface. The torso her back slammed into was as unrelenting as the concrete. Her replenished supply of oxygen exited her lungs in a whoosh … without so much as a goodbye.

A fresh form of panic took hold. Larkin screamed, but no sound left her gaping mouth. She put the fancy shoes to work, kicking indestructible shins. Her fists met with muscle-hardened brawn. His free hand pinned her right arm to his side.

“Lady, you picked the wrong rooftop.” The stranger shook her.

If only she’d brought her purse, she’d have her gun. But no. Maybe she could play cooperative until an opportunity to escape presented itself. Christ knew screaming wouldn’t do any good, even if she had the breath for it. That was why she came up here when the world got too rough—so they couldn’t hear her release.

She could see inside a thousand windows—and if someone in any one of them looked, they would see her—but they wouldn’t hear her. Her office and apartment had spectacular views, but she never took the time to study or truly appreciate them. Not until she came up here. And look where that had gotten her.

“Stop fighting,” the man’s low voice demanded.

The cold suddenly imposed a threat to her life. Who the hell could survive a frozen spine? It must have frozen because, as he commanded, she stilled. Her mind continued to run rampant, calculating angles and dismissing them in rapid fire.

“I have money.” Larkin’s throat hardly allowed the words to pass.

“Well, thank you.” He stepped away from the edge of the building, carrying her along with him.

Hope bloomed.

“You reaffirmed my lifestyle choices.”

Then the madman laughed, and her hope died.

“Let me go.” Larkin poured as much demand into her voice as she could muster.

“So you can splat your brains on the pavement and the cops can pin it on me? No thanks.”

“What are you talking about?” Larkin tried to turn her head, to get a better read on the crazy person who held her in the unbreakable grip of his arms, but shadows shrouded his features. “Who are you?”

“Your guardian angel, sweetheart.”

His deep baritone rumbled in her ear. He didn’t feel like a guardian angel. And then a far-off bulb lit. Larkin’s hair smacked her cheeks with every vehement shake.

“I’m not trying to kill myself.”

“Right.”

“Are you going to rape me?”

He scoffed, and the heat of his breath coursed down her neck. “Lady, I just saved your life. I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Then let me go.”

The stranger turned away from the view. His heavy boots took another step in the direction of the manhole. He lowered her what seemed like three feet, and her quaking shoes hit the ground. The cuff of his arm slid from her waist.

Larkin held perfectly still, afraid it was a trick. Her knees conspired against her, shaking and rattling her bones together.

“I hope your night gets better,” the stranger said from just behind her.

On wobbly heels, she turned her head to look up at the man who scared the shit out of her and could have done her real harm. Her gaze lifted higher and higher, shot wider and wider still to encompass the mountain behind her. The collar of a leather jacket flipped up points to a stubble-covered jaw. Dark, almost black eyes studied her from under the brim of shaggy onyx hair. A jaw made for crushing bone flexed.

His head tilted, and light caught the edge of his face. Bubbles and recesses lined the other side of his face from the point of his dark eye to the hinge of his jaw. The red scar was the stuff of horror movies. But the intensity of his gaze forced her heart into her throat, blocking her screams yet again.

Larkin eyed the manhole, twelve feet away, and ran for her life.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Odds

They’re called quasi-strippers.

They don’t really bare it all, like real strippers do behind the darkened glass doors of specialty adult clubs, but they aren’t exactly fully dressed either while they perform.

Crystal preferred the term exotic dancer. Five nights a week she took the small stage at the center of the high-limit blackjack tables, in the glamorous Scala Casino. Five nights a week she danced and smiled and undulated her perfect body to the rhythm of sultry songs, carefully chosen to lure the gamblers’ attention away from the cards and the ever-diminishing stacks of their chips. In the background, nothing is more Vegas than the Scala Casino floor, filled with a million noises, dazzling lights, and excess adrenaline. Nothing is more alive.

That’s where she belonged, among the glitter and the gold, the glitzy and the rich.

She wore strappy lingerie with black and gold lace accents on beige silk, designed to trick the mind’s eye into believing she was naked. Black, knee-high stiletto boots completed her attire, her black, garter-belt straps attached to them, sexy and kinky and fun. The appreciative looks she basked in that night told her she’d chosen her ensemble well. It was going to be a profitable evening.

The familiar music seemed a bit too loud, making her wince, a little dizzy. She grabbed the pole tighter, aware she was dancing out of rhythm, but knowing the customers were too far gone to notice. It was almost four in the morning, and by that time, most of them were pleasantly inebriated, high on their own excitement and maybe more, living the Vegas dream.

The only danger was that asshole, Farley, a fat, lewd pig who liked to scream at the girls, giving them a hard time for everything they did, right or wrong regardless. Two minutes of being late or changing clothes mid-shift and she’d get pulled inside the pit manager’s office for another scolding session.

But she held her head up during those moments, aware they were going to pass and even more aware they were meant to intimidate her into offering sexual favors in return for a privileged work atmosphere.

Oh, hell, no.

Not ever. Not even if the prick turned blue in the face from too much screaming, or his waiting-to-happen stroke knocked him dead right before her eyes.

But even Stan Farley was looking away that moment, focused on a newly arrived high roller who’d taken a seat at one of the blackjack tables with a view of the stage. She didn’t know that one, but judging by the way Farley fawned over him, he must’ve been someone important.

Someone rich.

Someone who didn’t care that the odds at his blackjack table were stacked higher against him, just because the table came with a view of full inviting cleavage and tight little buns.

Hers.

She felt beads of sweat bursting at the roots of her hair and forced some stale air into her lungs. Maybe the air conditioning was off, or something. The cigar smoke made it almost unbreathable, but it was an acceptable tradeoff for being allowed to work the high roller pit, not some fifty-cents-minimum roulette floor, where the tips were always Washingtons, never a Franklin and rarely a Lincoln, and not a whole lot of them to count at the end of a shift anyway.

No, she’d been lucky, and her luck had started to play in her favor about a month after she’d been hired. For that she probably had Devine to thank.

Her sweaty palms made it difficult for her to get a good grip on the shiny, chrome pole, but she managed a back hook spin and landed facing Devine. Her best friend danced some 30 feet away, on a small, elevated stage set among four, high-limit, roulette tables.

She waited until she could make eye contact with Devine and waved discreetly at her best friend. Just seeing her smile back made her feel less lonely, less vulnerable. Maybe she was going to be okay. Maybe things would work out after all.

Without realizing, she put her palm on her belly in a soft, caressing gesture, aimed to comfort the tiny sparkle of life growing inside her. She wasn’t showing a baby bump yet, but soon that would change, and with it, her entire life as she knew it.

She skipped out of rhythm again, but soon snapped out of her trance, motivated by Farley’s mean glare. She focused on her customers for a while and, within a few minutes of smiling provocatively and wiggling her rear, a crisp fifty-dollar bill landed under the thin strap of her thong, delivered by long, hairy fingers that reached lower and lingered longer than was necessary.

Sometimes she was happy the payout was 6:5 instead of 3:2 on a blackjack at the tables facing her; those jerks deserved to pay.

But she smiled at the man who’d delivered the tip and mocked a reverence without letting go of the pole. Then she let herself fall into a back bend and frowned when she saw Farley was approaching.

“What the hell is wrong with you, huh?” he snapped, after grabbing her arm and pulling her close. The music was loud, and no one could hear his words; not that anyone would care if they did. “Could you be bothered to do your job tonight? A deaf penguin has more rhythm than you.”

“I’m working it, Stan, what the hell? I haven’t taken a break in two hours.”

“The hell you are, bitch. You see those bozos? If they’re looking at their cards instead of your ass, you ain’t earning your keep.”

He let go of her arm and disappeared before she could say anything. He was a two-faced creep; with her and the other girls he showed his real charm. For all the patrons and the rest of the Scala staff, he was a perfect gentleman, always dressed in an impeccable suit and starched, white shirts, pleasantly smiling and accommodating.

She knew better than to let him get under her skin.

But her head was spinning, and she held on tight to the pole, not as part of her routine, but for much-needed balance. The music changed, and she welcomed the new beat, one of her favorites. She knew the playlist by heart; the casino had a limited supply of premixed tracks, but the customers didn’t seem to care.

Cheers erupted at the table in front of her, and one of the players lifted his arms in the air, beaming. The croupier pushed an impressive pile of chips in front of the man, and she quickly flashed her megawatt smile and made lingering eye contact. He didn’t disappoint; he picked one of the chips and sent it flying her way. She caught it gracefully, then placed it on the floor, next to the pole. Her barely-there panties weren’t made to hold casino chips.

When she looked up, she startled.

It was him. It was Paul, and he was furious, by the angle of his eyebrows, by the deep ridges flanking his mouth.

He stood right there, next to her stage, glaring at her with a loaded gaze filled with such hatred that her breath caught. He beckoned her to come closer without making a single gesture. She approached him hesitantly and crouched to bring their eyes on the same level, aware not even Farley would dare say a word. She shot a quick glance toward Devine’s stage, but she was gone, nowhere in sight.

His eyes drilled into hers, close enough she could see his dilated pupils. Without a word, he shoved a purple and white chip deep inside her bra, then grabbed the thin strap, pulling her closer to him. He said something, keeping his voice low and menacing. She couldn’t make out his words but didn’t dare to ask. She wanted to explain herself, wanted him to understand her motives, but she couldn’t find her words.

She didn’t want his money, and she didn’t deserve his anger.

When he finally let go of her strap and pushed her away, she almost fell. Her knees were shaking, and she felt the urge to sit for a moment, to catch her breath. She grabbed the pole tightly and did a clumsy back slide against the shiny surface, landing hard on her butt, then folded her legs to the side. She let her head hang low, and her long, wavy hair covered her face, hiding the fear in her eyes until it subsided a little.

Then she wrapped her hands around the pole again, planning to stand and do a pirouette, but her arms and legs felt numb, listless. She tried to breathe, but air refused to enter her lungs. Frantic, she looked around, searching for someone, anyone, who could help. Only one man was looking at her, but her desperate and silent plea was misunderstood.

The man licked his lips, arranged his crotch with a quick gesture, then looked away at another dancer.

She gasped for air a couple of times, then the bright lights of the casino seemed to dim, inviting darkness to engulf her view of the lively floor. Silence came, heavy, palpable. Against it, not even her own heart beats could be heard.

Defeated, she let go. Her body landed on the stage floor with a loud thump that no one heard. Unnoticed, a white and purple casino chip fell out of her top and rolled onto the floor, stopping under a table.

For a long moment, Farley thought the immobile pose was part of Crystal’s routine, some new dance move that she was trying. Customers really enjoyed seeing girls crawling on the stage; it made the viewers feel powerful, superior, in control. By the time Farley realized he’d been wrong, she was already gone. His chubby fingers felt for a pulse and found nothing.

Now he’d have to call the cops and close the pit. His worst nightmare.

Protection is safety. Until it stifles… Tortured Soul by @StaciTroilo #NewRelease #PNR #Suspense

Hi, Jacquie. Thank you so much for hosting me today.

I’m releasing Tortured Soul, the fourth and final book of the Medici Protectorate series. It is a mashup of genres, including suspense, thriller, paranormal, and romance. Because you are a romance writer, I can only assume your readers would prefer a sneak peek at the softer side of this story. To that end, I’ve chosen the following excerpt:

TS teaser 3

The statues across from the bench mocked him. A man and a woman unafraid to admit their feelings, act on their desires. Forever frozen in the throes of passion, their lust immortalized in unyielding marble.

Toni’s flesh would be soft, warm, welcoming.

Cazzo. He had to stop thinking of her that way. She wasn’t his to fantasize about.

He turned to look at her. Small droplets of water rested in her hair, on her eyelashes. A few bigger drops trailed down her cheeks, like nature itself cried for the two of them.

He’d tamp his desires down. But once in a while, he would allow himself to think of her, and he’d remember her like this. Fresh and dewy skin, a slight blush to her cheeks. The rapid rise and fall of her breasts as she fought to bank her temper—a temper riled because of him. How he’d love to see her breathless for a better reason, see her skin flush with desire.

Screw it.

Coz touched the raindrops on her cheek with the tip of his finger. He caressed her face, then cupped it in his large hand.

A tiny crinkle formed between her eyebrows as she scrunched her forehead in confusion. Rather than marring her features, it enhanced them.

She was, in a word, delectable. And he had to have a taste.

He bent his head and touched his nose to hers, kept his eyes open to see her reaction.

Her eyes widened, but she didn’t recoil, didn’t reject him.

That was all the invitation he needed.

Coz slid his hand around her head and threaded his fingers through her hair. He brushed his lips across her cheeks, kissing away raindrops. She smelled sweet—like vanilla and cinnamon, a gourmet delight for his exclusive indulgence. He watched through hooded eyelids as her cheeks pinked under his attention. The stunned expression on her face brought a smile to his own. Her eyes were still wide, her lips softly parted, and he took that as his opening.

He slid his mouth over hers, and when she sighed, slipped his tongue inside.

Just a taste…

Oh, but she offered so much more than he’d hoped for.

She met his slow pace and gentle touch with a fervency he never expected. It sparked a cyclone of emotions in him, desires and needs swirling in an unquenchable vortex of hunger, of craving.

More. He needed more.

Ah, those first few kisses of a relationship get me every time. I hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as they enjoyed… whoops, I mean, as much as I enjoyed writing it.

TS cover

Blurb:

Protection is safety. Until it stifles.

After months of clandestine battles, the Brothers of the Medici Protectorate finally know who is responsible for the assassination attempts on the Notaro family, the secret descendants of the Medici line. And they’ve never faced such a formidable foe.

Roberto Cozza–Coz–faces this new reality with surprising pragmatism. His powers may make the difference in winning their covert war–if only he can master them in time. It would just be so much easier if he could get his emotions under control, but neither his Brothers nor their charges are making things easy on him.

Toni Notaro appreciates the security provided by the Brothers, but she knows she has her own role to play–and it terrifies her. She is the missing link in Coz mastering his emerging abilities, yet she struggles to bridge the gap between what he needs and what she can offer.

As the Brotherhood hurtles inexorably toward the climactic final showdown, Coz and Toni must find the strength within themselves and each other to master the secrets of his powers, or risk death and defeat for all they hold dear.

My Review

A fast-paced suspense read!

A killer escapes prison and embarks on a mission to murder those who placed him behind bars– including defense attorney Brynn Holloran.

Brynn doesn’t scare easily, but with the gruesome murder of her mentor and a high profile court case about to start, she is forced to accept the protection of a private security firm.

Erik Morgan isn’t thrilled with his assignment to keep a headstrong attorney from getting herself killed while police track down an escaped convict. But, he can’t deny he’s attracted to her, either.

Desperate to find this murderer before he kills anyone else, Brynn and Erik team up with police investigator Lindsey Leary to track the clues.

Brynn and Erik’s attraction soars and creates complications as a hunter closes in on his prey.

This story was not as good as her Tracer books, in my opinion. While the action built and there was a twist I didn’t see coming, the ending fell flat for me. Still, well worth the read, though!

I give Desperate Girls 4 lovely kisses- An entertaining read!

Let the games begin… Exhume by Danielle Gerard #BookReview #Mystery #Thriller

What’s more, a shocking piece of evidence suggests that the killer’s business is far from over—and that Schwartzman may be in danger. In this pulse-pounding thriller from award-winning writer Danielle Girard, a woman must face her worst nightmare to catch a killer.

My Review

This book gave me chills!

Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman is called upon to investigate a woman’s murder and is shocked by similarities to her own past that she can’t ignore. Is her psychotic ex-husband behind the crime?

Seven years ago, she managed the impossible and escaped the controlling man she’d married too late to save her unborn child, something she’d have to live with forever.

Now he was back.

Let the games begin.

This story is an intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The tension amps up continually and had me gasping more than once!

I questioned Annabelle’s original weakness, for want of a better term, in staying with a man who obviously had no respect for her, but this was later explained with insight into her self-absorbed mother.

I give Exhume 5 lovely kisses- A great start to a crime series!

The CONTRACT between heaven and earth

By John W. Howell & Gwen M. Plano

John Howell is a wonderful member of the blogging community and it is my honor to welcome him and Gwen Plano to my blog. They have big news to share, so I’ll let them take it away 😊

Thank you, Jacquie, for inviting us to join you today. We are so grateful to be featured on your blog alongside your Wounded Hearts series. We are super excited to share a bit about our book with you and your readers.

The Contract

Available on Kindle and Paperback

Kindle priced at $0.99 for the introduction.

The CONTRACT is a different story for writers John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano. For either of them, it is their first attempt at co-authorship. After a year of Hurricane Harvey and other challenges, they have created, what they have termed, an inspirational thriller that bridges heaven and earth.

Here is the blurb:

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance, and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.

If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires.

Here is an excerpt.

Brad and Sarah left the complex and strolled back to their residence. Brad leaned close to Sarah and whispered, “Why do I get the feeling we’re being watched?”

“I’ve had that feeling since we arrived on base. I just assumed it came down to everyone here knowing you.”

“Naw. This feels different. I had this same instinct back in Afghanistan—nothing you can put your finger on but just a knowing feeling.”

“What should we do?”

“Keep our eyes open.”

“I would love to have a pair in the back of my head.”

Sarah’s comment broke the tension, and they both laughed.

Brad said, “We just have to keep aware of who’s around us.”

“Why?”

“I need to tell you some things about this whole situation. It will make you nervous, though. Let’s take a moment and sit here.” Brad pointed at a lone bench that stood beside the pedestrian path.

Bewildered, Sarah sat and looked at Brad, “So something is going on that you haven’t shared with me? I’ve had that strange feeling you described, only it has to do with you and me.”

Be A Good Girl by Tess Diamond

Excerpt:

Abby took a deep breath, her eyes settling on the words. This was it. In just minutes, she’d be face-to-face with him. Her heart was hammering in her chest at the thought.

She turned back to Stan, and was surprised at how troubled the older man looked.

“Are you sure about this?” he asked her.

“I’m a big girl, Stan,” she said. “You don’t have to worry about me.”

“Look . . .” He licked his lips, looking nervous.

“He’s tricky. Really tricky.”

“I’ve heard the rumors,” Abby said.

She didn’t need the rumors. She knew from real life exactly how sick the man she was about to meet was. She had spent the last two years learning everything there was to know about him. She’d talked to every teacher he’d ever had, every relative who was willing to speak to her and not slam the door in her face. She’d talked to every single person who’d even had a modicum of contact with Howard Wells, better known as Dr. X.

She knew him. And she was about to use that knowledge to get what she wanted from him.

“I just want you to be careful,” Stan said. “He knows exactly what to say to get to you.”

“I know he talked an inmate into killing himself,” Abby said.

“Not just one,” Stan said quietly, looking over his shoulder nervously before lowering his voice and adding, “And not just inmates.”

Abby’s eyes widened at the implication. She knew she should press Stan for more information, but she also knew she could ferret out the truth herself with a little research. She didn’t want to make him even more nervous, especially because he was  authorized to cut her meeting short if he deemed the situation unsafe. “I appreciate your concern,” she told Stan.

“But I’ll only be asking him questions.”

“Okay,” Stan said. “Just don’t get too close.” He took her through the same rundown she’d gotten when she’d first entered the prison: no contact, no passing the prisoner anything, and no getting within even ten feet of the prisoner. Abby had a feeling that the last one was a specific rule for the man she was about to see.

The solitary wing was quiet as they walked through it to the very end, where a door led to another, even more isolated section.

“Inmate 3847, your visitor is here,” Stan called out. Abby’s skin prickled at the change in his voice. When talking with her, he had been kind, almost grandfatherly. But now, his voice was stern and authoritative, full of “don’t fuck with me” attitude.

“You sit here,” Stan said, pointing his baton at the bench set a good ten feet away from the thick, clear plastic wall that made up the front of Howard’s cell. “Inmate 3847, come forward.”

There was a pause, and Abby had to bite the inside of her cheek as he shuffled into view.

Howard Wells was fifteen years older than the last time she’d seen a picture of him, but he was no less terrifying. Goose bumps—the dreadful, horror-filled kind—spread across her skin as his eyes met hers.

His hair was gray now, slicked back, the comb tracks visible, like he’d carefully groomed it for this meeting. His orange jumpsuit was clean and tidy, his bright blue eyes shining in his craggy face.

His feet were shackled, but instead of his hands being cuffed, he was in a straitjacket, his arms lashed to his sides. Despite this, he held himself like he was the emperor of his own tiny kingdom. Like she was a serf who had the honor of experiencing his presence.

Abby showed no emotion as she sat down, placing her notebook and pen in her lap. Stan hovered in the corner, and Abby gave him a small nod.

“I’ll be right outside,” he said. “Panic button is right here.” He pointed meaningfully at the red button on the wall. “Don’t try any of your manipulative shit, Wells.”

A light tsking sound filled the air as Stan left them alone, and Abby stared at him. He came forward, so he was just inches behind the thick sheet of Plexiglas that kept him from going for her. “Abigail Winthrop,” he said.

“Hello, Howard,” she said. She refused to call him Mr. Wells. And she certainly wasn’t going to call him Doctor. There wasn’t going to be any deference here.

She wasn’t playing his game. She was here for answers—and she was going to get them…
