“Where are we? This isn’t the Holiday Inn.” I examined the quaint home in front of me. A large front porch with a swing welcomed visitors to stop and visit. The front door had an inlay of beveled glass in the center of the dark wood. A bright glass chandelier shone light on the gray painted porch.

“It’s my home.”

I turned back to look at Lucas.

“Well, my family home.” He shrugged.

“Okay. So, why are we here? I thought Jonah told you to take me to a hotel. If you are thinking about finishing what we started at dinner….” I raised my chin. “I’m not in the mood now.”

Lucas’s fingers trailed over my lips and along my jawline. “I thought you might want to stay here tonight. It’s safe.” His heated gaze was at odds with his caring words. “My sister-in-law, Betsie, lives here with Jonah. And Marcus is home this weekend, too. Besides, it’s comfy and home.” His emphasis on the last word showed just how much this place meant to him.

Beginning to understand his thinking, I smiled. “Thanks. I’m sure no one would want to break into the police detective’s home. Not with his badass brothers at home.”

“I knew even with dead bolts, after the break-in, you wouldn’t feel safe. You can even borrow a nightshirt from Betsie.” He tugged me up the steps. “Come on, slowpoke.” Lucas’s smile filled his face. It was refreshing to see this side of him. So far, I’d witnessed brooding, angry, ferocious, tantalizing, and now caring and compassionate.
