To Every Thing There is a Season
Vanessa expected North Country County International Airport to be what the name implied, an impressive place. Instead, there wasn’t even an enclosed gangway for walking into the small terminal. As she stepped onto the steep stairs rolled up to the cabin door, the first thing she noticed was a cluster of trees beyond a wide field bordering the runway.
Early afternoon sun caught the top leaves, which had already turned a shade of crimson that was a shock to Vanessa’s eyes, accustomed as they were to the more subtle autumn colors of the northwest. This first sight of Riverton was another kind of shock also. In a flash as bright and blinding as the foliage, she knew she’d brought herself to a completely unfamiliar place.
Excerpt from A Villain for Vanessa
Today is the beginning of spring. The perfect time to talk about the powerful impact seasons of the year have on my stories, on my characters and on me.
I grew up in the North Country where my Riverton Road Romantic Suspense series takes place. Each September I was startled by the blaze of autumn leaves, always a surprise though I saw them every fall. This was my favorite time of year. The crisp air. A sense of life invigorated after the dog days of August.
Vanessa has a very different reaction to her first glimpse of a tree line splashed with shocking reds and brilliant yellows. She feels like a stranger in a foreign land. She experiences a foretaste of the events she’ll struggle through in the story to come, and that foretaste is unsettling.
The chill of autumn strikes her heart the same way this volatile season will buffet her soul as pages turn. Lazy summer is gone. The harsh Northern New York State winter lies ahead. Who knows what will happen in between? Not long from this moment of arrival, Vanessa will be tempted to rush back to tiny North Country County Airport and fly away.
By then, the emotional season inside her is already threatening, even hostile. Escape might be a sensible choice, but Vanessa doesn’t run away. Partly because she has family to discover. Partly because she’s met Bobby Rizzo and is as unhinged by him as she was by her blinding introduction to Riverton.
My own visual imagination was molded by the change of seasons that are my memory heritage. The colors that thrilled me. The thrash of branches in the wind. A swirl of bright leaves tumbling everywhere. I relive these visions through Vanessa’s eyes. For me they were a vivid backdrop to my younger years. For her they are the stage set for the tumultuous drama that is A Villain for Vanessa. We invite you to venture with us into the storm.
