Annie Campbell is finally going to marry the man she’s loved for most of her adult life and she couldn’t be more excited–and anxious.

It was late afternoon and dusk was settling on the horizon by the time Chris caught his first fish—a good sized rainbow trout—and they could start for home.
Jared glanced in the rearview mirror, expecting Chris to have fallen asleep after all that fresh air, but he was staring out the window instead, his young face solemn.
“Something on your mind, buddy?” A deer appeared alongside the road, its ears twitching. Jared slowed the truck, but before he could point it out to Chris, the animal turned and bolted into the forest, its tail a white plume as it fled.
“Are you going to be my dad?” He gave Jared a diffident look. “You know, after the wedding stuff?”
Jared’s lips quirked, not sure what Annie would think of her elaborate plans labelled as—stuff. “Yeah. Does that work for you?” He held his breath, surprised by how much it mattered to him. He’d spent years avoiding the family trap, as he’d come to think of home life, yet now he wanted that very thing with every beat of his heart. As long as it included Annie and his son.
When there was no immediate answer, Jared glanced over his shoulder and was dismayed to see tears hovering on Chris’s lashes. “What’s wrong, buddy? Don’t you want me to be your daddy?” Annie was right. Their son did resent his intrusion on their family.
“Kenny Chapman said if you marry my mom she won’t have time for me anymore.” Chris wiped his nose on his sleeve and glared. “He said you’d become the boss of me, and that was bad because dads are mean.”
Jared resolved to have a not-so-friendly chat with Kenny Chapman’s father. If he was hurting the boy…
A glimpse of white caught his attention. Jared whipped his gaze to the front just in time to see a fawn—the spots on its side trapped the headlights—standing in the middle of the road, spindly legs vibrating with fear.
Shit, not Bambi.

Ha! Well, I’m old, *tired*, and much better off living in my head than in the real world. 😀
