My final #read of 2017, and it was awesome! #BookReview Conspiracy in Death by J.D. Robb

girl-3041464_640

In a future where human nature remains as predictable as death, a killer plays God and puts innocent lives in the palm of his hand in this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series.

With the precision of a surgeon, a serial killer preys on the most vulnerable souls of the world’s city streets. The first victim: a sidewalk sleeper, found dead in New York City.  No bruises, no signs of struggle. Just a laser-perfect, fist-sized hole where his heart had once been. Lieutenant Eve Dallas is assigned to investigate. But in the heat of a cat-and-mouse game with the killer, Dallas’s job is suddenly on the line. Now her hands are tied…between a struggle for justice—and a fight for her career…

J.D. Robb
J.D. Robb is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and the pseudonym for #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The futuristic suspense series stars Eve Dallas, a New York City police lieutenant with a dark past. Initially conceived as a trilogy, readers clamored for more of Eve and the mysterious Roarke. Dark In Death, on sale February 2018, is the 46th entry in the series.
My Review
This is my second–third?–J.D. Robb book so obviously I haven’t read the series in order, but that doesn’t take away from the storyline whatsoever. Ms Robb does an excellent job blending past with present, or should I say future :), to bring us an exciting, mystery novel filled with captivating characters and enough realism to keep this reader on the edge of her seat.
Someone is killing the street people of New York City, otherwise known as sidewalk sleepers. The men and women who have fallen through the cracks of society and now survive on their wits alone. But that’s not enough to save them from the serial killer with a surgeon’s fingers and a heart of stone.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is assigned the case, but comes up against a bitter enemy. One with the power to end Dallas’s career. Suddenly, she’s in the struggle of her life, not only to stop a murderer, but to save her badge and the very identity that makes her the person she’s become.
I can’t say what draws me to these books more, Eve’s tough exterior that she uses to cover the horrible memories of her youth, or her multi-millionaire husband, Roarke, who for all his riches, will do anything to protect the woman he loves more than life. And then there’s an outstanding cast of secondary characters, each with tales of their own, that add another layer to the In Death series.
Whatever the case may be, this will definitely NOT be my last Eve Dallas book!
I give Conspiracy in Death 5+ lovely kisses- A highly recommended read!

A genius immortal with an eidetic memory tries to be perfect, but for Pietas, things don’t go as planned. Especially since his best friend is a human who doesn’t take anything seriously.

Mix in a telepathic lover from whom he can hide no secrets, a ginormous sentient panther who wants to be his “kitty” and you have the makings of a lot of humor. If only life were that simple.

Half a million of his people are in cryosleep, awaiting release, and Pietas must find a way to save them. In a play for power, his brutal and merciless father tries to destroy everything.

Immortals may heal, but a wound of the heart lasts forever…

In this scene, Pietas has been playing with the panther, a huge animal he calls Tiklaus. The name means “Loyal Warrior.”

The panther batted at him, knocked Pietas onto his back and then flipped itself down beside him. Tiklaus wrapped its front legs around his arm and gnawed at it in gentle play while the hind feet kicked him without injury. Claws flashed, but did no harm.

Pietas blew out a breath. Now I know how a chew toy feels.

When the panther draped itself over his chest, Pietas struggled to slide out from under but could not get up. The animal weighed less than he did, but with no visible effort, it kept Pietas from rising.

“I concede, my friend. You win.”

The panther ignored him.

“Tiklaus, off.”

Nothing.

“Off, please.”

The panther yawned, opening a huge maw. Fangs flashed.

Pietas tried a signal that worked with sparring partners and asked for release by double-tapping the panther’s side.

The cat stood at once and stepped over him. It shook from nose to tail, then sat and groomed itself.

Pietas stood and brushed himself off. Standing beside Tiklaus, who reached him mid-thigh, he took pride in knowing this sweet, playful cat was also the snarling ball of animal rage that had nailed his father to the ground.

Pietas ensured no one was on the path in either direction before he knelt and scratched the cat’s ears. “Who’s a good kitty?”

The animal sneaked in a lick of his hand and face and flopped down on its back.

“My Tiklaus, that’s who. Tiklaus is a good kitty.” He rubbed the smooth belly. “Yes, you are! Such a good, big kitty. You’re my kitty, aren’t you? Good, good kitty.”

The panther accepted the attention, one paw twitching. After a moment, it stood and shook itself. A purring sound rumbled from its chest. It sat, licked one paw and added a lick of Pietas’s face as well.

He chuckled. “Thank you for the bath.” He hugged the panther’s neck. “You have as soft a heart as I do but you don’t show it either. Pact, my friend. I won’t tell if you won’t.” He kissed Tiklaus on the nose.

The panther bumped its head against Pietas, then bounded to a tree and up it.

The Art of Running in Heels by @Rachel_Gibson @Avonbooks #romance #NewRelease @PureTextuality

Running in five-inch stilettos is an art form.

Leaving your fiancé at the altar on live television is a disaster. Lexie Kowalsky thought she was ready to get married in front of millions of people, but at the last minute she fled the set of television’s hottest reality show, Gettin’ Hitched. Wearing a poofy white dress and a pair of 5 inch sparkly shoes, Lexie hopped a float plane for Sand Spit, Canada. She figured no one would find her there. But she was wrong.

Sharing her flight was the Seattle Chinooks biggest star, Sean Knox. Lexie wasn’t just a reality-show runaway, she was his pain in the butt coach’s daughter. She was chaos and temptation and definitely off limits, but getting her luscious body out of that wedding gown, he couldn’t resist getting her in his bed for one amazing night.

Then a photo of Sean and Lexi breaks the internet—and suddenly they’re both swept up in a crazy plan to spin the whole story. But you can’t run from love…

Excerpt

“It’s been ten minutes.” He drained the glass and turned toward Jimmy. “Maybe your passenger isn’t going to show up.”

“It’s been less than five.” The pilot pulled a cell phone from the pocket of his bomber jacket and glanced at it for several seconds. “It’s an emergency.” He turned his attention toward shore as if he waited for some sort of signal.

Emergency or not, Sean hoped like hell the person they were waiting on wasn’t trying to drive from anywhere within a twenty-mile radius of downtown Seattle. If that was the case, the

other passenger was probably stuck in chaotic traffic due to that shitty show, Gettin’ Hitched, and the mob surrounding the Fairmont Hotel, fighting for a glimpse of the latest reality show couple and cheering like the Seahawks had won the Super Bowl again. NBC had even set up jumbotrons downtown so fans could capture the happy couple exchanging their vows on live television with the rest of the country.

Sean had never watched the television program, but he couldn’t escape it. Gettin’ Hitched fever had spread across America faster than a virus in flu season, and it seemed everyone but him had become infected. Even the guys in the Chinooks locker room had talked about each episode like they were getting paid for their own personal recap and review. They’d discussed the scheming and backstabbings and had placed bets on which girl would be sent home each week. Of course, their interest had a lot to do with Lexie Kowalsky. Some of the guys knew Lexie, and her ability to back-check and deke the other bachelorettes off the show made them proud. It was probably no coincidence that the daughter of John Kowalsky had the grit and determination to cut each girl off at the knees and had won the privilege of gettin’ hitched on live television.

Sean had never met Lexie. She’d been three weeks into a twelve-episode season when he’d signed with the Chinooks. He’d seen her, though, on commercials and magazine covers and on mobile billboards driving around Seattle, every pixel photo-shopped, bright white teeth, brighter blue eyes, perfection from the top of her blond head to the tips of her pink toenails. She looked bigger than life, sitting on a tractor and towing a man all trussed up in bailing twine. The guy had a stupid smile on his face that made him look like a real pussy. No way on earth Sean would ever agree to something like that. He didn’t care if he was being judgmental. Those two had signed up to be judged. His verdict: The bride was probably dumb as the billboards, the groom was likely a pussy, and both were as fake as their shitty show.

Sean felt the vodka kick up his comfy glow a few more notches. Lexie Kowalsky probably wasn’t as pretty in real life as in pictures, and those boobs that practically fell out of her shirt in every photo were likely bought and paid for with her daddy’s money. If Coach Kowalsky wasn’t such an asshole, Sean might actually feel sorry for the guy.

It had been no secret that Kowalsky hadn’t wanted to trade Kessel and Stamkos for Sean, and the thought of John “The Wall” dressed up in a tuxedo and forced to perform in the Gettin’ Hitched chaos brought a smile to Sean’s lips.

Sean turned his attention from the parking lot to Jimmy. “What kind of dire emergency can there possibly be that someone would have to get to Sandspit in a hurry?” He took off his sunglasses and shoved them in the pocket of his jacket. “A local jam or jelly heist?”

“What?” Jimmy glanced at Sean, then returned his attention to the shore. “Not dire, but I. . . .” Jimmy’s voice faded to a whisper, “Holy shit. We’re a go.”

Sean’s gaze followed Jimmy’s as a silver MINI Cooper screeched to a stop in the parking lot. The door flew open and a white pouf erupted from the car like an old-school pan of Jiffy Pop. The pouf struggled for several seconds, expanding and growing, then it practically fell from the car, getting poufier. The whole scene was so unreal, Sean half expected clowns to start jumping out, one after another, honking party horns, and acting like fools. Yeah, Sean was a little drunk. Maybe more than a little, but he wasn’t stupid drunk. He wasn’t on his lips, hallucinating drunk. Just to make sure, he said, “Tell me you’re seeing what I’m seeing.”

“Yep.” The driver stuck a hand out the window

and waved as if signaling something. Jimmy waved back, and the MINI Cooper sped away, leaving behind all that pouf. The setting sun reflected within the pouf like twinkly lights, and the cold breeze caught the ends of a veil and whipped it about a woman’s head. At least Sean assumed it was a woman as he watched her swat at the veil like she was being attacked by bees. In all that over-the-top froth and twinkles, it could be a drag queen, he supposed. All at once, it spun right then left, bent forward, grabbed an armful of dress, and sprinted toward them.

“Get in. We’re taking off.”

Some stories take an unexpected turn… Can’t Let Go by @BarbaraFreethy #Romance #Suspense @InkSlingerPR

From #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy comes another stunning blend of heart-warming romance and spine-tingling suspense in her popular Callaway Series…

Talented graphic artist and animator Annie Callaway has been commissioned by a Hollywood studio to create the next superhero blockbuster movie, but a bout of creative block has Annie searching the Southern California beach scene for inspiration. A local Irish bar in an old train depot, run by the ruggedly attractive and somewhat mysterious Griffin Hale, piques her interest, and she finds herself weaving fantasies about not only Griffin but also the quirky characters who work there.

The last thing Griffin Hale needs at his bar is a nosy artist looking for personal stories to turn into movie plots. He has carefully cultivated a scene of complete normalcy for people who need it more than Annie could possibly imagine, and it’s his job to protect them. But the beautiful redhead with the compelling green eyes is difficult to turn away. Annie’s fantasy world where good always conquers evil is not the life that Griffin has lived, and he can’t help but think she’ll never be satisfied with anyone less than a superhero.

After a string of bad relationships, Annie willingly admits that most real men don’t live up to her muscle-bound, cape-wearing protectors of the world, but when her stubborn curiosity propels her into a danger she never expected, she begins to realize that some heroes work in the dark…and a man who fights for you is a man worth fighting for.

While Griffin is determined to keep Annie alive, he’s not at all convinced he can give her the happily-ever-after she’s looking for. But then some stories take an unexpected turn…

A man walked into the bar. He wore dark-gray slacks, a white button-down shirt, and a striped navy-blue tie. His brown hair was cut very short, his face cleanly shaven. And he was the last person Griffin wanted to see. But whatever Paul Daniels had to say needed to be said with a bit more privacy.

He tipped his head toward a table in the corner, then poured two shots of bourbon and walked around the bar, sitting down across from a man who inspired both loyalty and frustration whenever they met up. “Could you look more like a fed?” he asked.

“I didn’t have time to change,” Paul Daniels replied. He took the shot with a swallow of satisfaction. “Smooth.”

“You must be off the clock.”

“Almost.”

That answer didn’t make him happy. “I told you we need to take a break.”

“And we did. It’s been two months,” Paul replied. “Megan is a twenty-four-year-old woman. She’s jittery, fragile, and isn’t doing well in isolation. She needs people around her that she doesn’t have to lie to. It won’t be for long—a week, maybe ten days.”

“You always say that.”

“And I’m mostly telling the truth.”

He drank his shot, breaking his own rule about not drinking while working, then said, “Where is she?”

“In the car.”

“Alone?”

“Rob is with her.” Paul paused, resting his forearms on the table, as his brown-eyed gaze settled on Griffin’s face. “She’s not any happier about this than you are, but I think this would be a good place for her.”

“Where is she from?”

“A long way from here. I’m not worried about danger finding her; I’m worried about her cracking or running. Some people can live a lie with no problems. Others can’t.”

He knew that better than anyone.

The door opened again, and for a split second he thought it might be the person Paul had brought to the bar, but the woman with reddish-blonde hair and sparkling green eyes was much more familiar and even more disturbing. She’d been very attractive in the orange bikini she’d had on yesterday, but it had been hard to get past the enormous fear in her eyes. Today, wearing white jeans and a clingy blue top, she looked beautiful and back on her game.

But why was she here? He couldn’t believe it was a coincidence.

“Damn,” he muttered.

“Ex-girlfriend?” Paul asked, raising an eyebrow as he followed his gaze.

“No, but not someone I wanted to see.”

“You never want to see anyone. I’m still surprised someone as unfriendly as you decided to open a bar.”

Sometimes—like today—he asked himself the same question. But while there were a lot of people in the bar, he didn’t have to interact with very many of them.

As the redhead’s gaze lit on him, a smile spread across her face. He felt like he’d just been struck by a hot, bright ray of sun. It warmed up places in his body that had gone cold a long time ago.

“I’m going to get Megan and bring her in,” Paul said, getting to his feet. “I’ll let you deal with whatever this is.”

“What?” he asked, a little distracted by the woman making her way across the bar.

“I’ll be right back.”

He had a lot more he wanted to say to Paul, but his friend was already gone, and the woman he’d pulled out of the ocean yesterday was almost at his table. He stood up, his nerves tightening. He could sense danger from a mile away. He didn’t know why this woman was trouble; he just knew that she was.

The Joys of Two Left Feet #Holidaymusic #Celebrating #HolidayGreetings

snowmen-160883_640

I always wished I could dance. I just love the joy and abandon you see in the faces of those blessed with the rhythm gene. Me, I have two left feet and am most likely tone deaf to boot, lol.

There are so many fantastic holiday songs that get the toes a-tapping. I thought I’d share a few of my favorites with you today.

Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin MaldonadoKevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Avi Kaplan was formerly a member of the group; he was replaced by Sallee in 2017. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslinesriffingpercussion and beatboxing, they are widely known for their covers, mostly of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material.

Probably, my all-time favorite song ever performed. It’s hard to imagine anyone not feeling moved by these words.

Gazing into her eyes, Levi stepped back and pulled his T-shirt up and over his head and then dropped it on the ground.

She did her best not to react, but her eyes widened and her lips parted. He was exquisite. Lean muscle, chiseled detail, broad chest and pecs. The sight was even better than the pictures that were plastered everywhere online. “I thought they’d airbrushed you.”

His head tilted. “Say what?”

“Those pictures they’re always posting on the Internet. Of you without…um…your…um…shirt,” she stammered, suddenly embarrassed to admit she’d been gawking at him for the past six years. Though with that body of his, it was kind of hard not to.

“You thought they Photoshopped me?” he repeated in mock disbelief.

“Well, yeah.” She thought they did that to everyone. She eyed his chest again. Apparently they didn’t have to with Levi Cortez.

He inched closer, the look on his face almost predatory. “You looked at pictures of me online?”

“Darla forced me to.” Staring at hot men online was one of her friend’s favorite pastimes. Of course, she’d looked him up on her own a few times too. Only to see his stats on the circuit, of course. Not that he should be privy to that information.

“Did you like what you saw?” he asked in a husky voice.

One of her shoulders lifted in a pathetically weak shrug. “Kind of.”

He inched closer. “Do you like what you see now?”

Her gaze trailed down his body. Before she knew what she was doing, her hand brushed his chest and worked its way down his abs. “Mmm- hmmm.”

“Want to see more?” He kicked off his boots, and his hands went to his silver belt buckle.

Whoa. She blinked hard. Wait a minute. Was he stripping? She shook herself awake. “We can’t go skinny- dipping!” She backed away from him, nearly tripping over the chair in the process.

He unclasped his belt. “Why not?”

“Well…” Staring at his chest, she struggled to come up with one logical reason. Rational thought, rational thought…there had to be one in there somewhere. “What if someone else shows up?” Like Dev? “It’s indecent exposure.”

Levi laughed. “It’s private property. No one will show up. Lucas and Naomi hardly ever leave the house anymore, and Lance and Jessa are in Denver for the night.” He pulled her into his arms. “So it’s just you and me, baby.”

EXCERPT:

Rachel and Jamie

Guilty pleasure rippled through Rachel as she slowly relived the moments of yesterday’s lunch date with Brandon. A disturbing, mouth-watering vision of her ex-lover with only a deep chocolate brown bath towel precariously around his hips wafted into her mind. The coarse, dark hairs on his broad chest thick and manly… It was more tantalizing than the creamy wine and mushroom sauce Rachel was stirring at her stove. The simmering chicken morsels would be served on a bed of aromatic rice and vegetables, one of Jamie’s favourite meals. Her nipples became taut against her cotton top. The languid sensations swelled within her, making her lick her parched lips.

Phew, it was hot in the kitchen.

Their delicious Thai lunch had reawakened her fantasies of their younger escapades, even though on the most part Brandon had kept his word, dropping any mention of their history together.

Stop it. Leave those thoughts in the past where they belong.

Conjuring up Jamie’s image to replace the semi-clad Brandon, she hoped her husband’s mood had improved after their four whole days apart. He’d sounded like his usual self on the phone late last night, telling her of his flight details back from Aberdeen, with no reference to their argument. His work was obviously on the forefront of his mind.

Rachel’s pulse skipped erratically at the sound of Jamie’s key in the front door, then it opened and closed.

She nearly dropped the wooden spoon as he came into the kitchen. She recognized the expression on his face, seeing something alien, dangerous in his tired eyes, the set of his tight stubble-darkened jaw.

He strode towards her with purpose like a coiled spring kept in check within him. His determined expression heated her even more than her earlier musings. The bubbling aromas of the fragrant casserole were ignored. Her thudding heart sent her blood rushing to her ears as he ate up the final step between them and reached out to her.

Silently he wrapped his arms around her. His firm, warm mouth followed where he was staring, at her parted lips. He kissed her as if he’d returned from a decade-long war and their every moment apart had been agony. Groaning, he pulled her even closer to himself, as if needing to be this close, this intimate, this fast.

“Rachel…” He said gruffly, “I’m sorry…I missed you.”

She dropped the spoon on the granite counter. His tense bear hug brimmed with promises of unbridled passion. She nuzzled against his familiar warmth, his strength.

Deepening their kiss as if the world was on the verge of collapsing, he sighed as his mouth moved to her cheek, grazing the hollow of her throat and collar bone. He tugged at the hem of her too warm top, moving his lips away from her long enough to pull the cotton fabric over her head.

The static crackled between them, entwining them.

Again, his warm lips roved to the crevice between her breasts, anticipation melting the pit of her stomach like molten caramel. He was raising her skirt, caressing her hips, buttocks, her thighs, all the time kissing her throat, shoulders and exposed parts of her swelling breasts.

Breathing shallowly, her heavy lids fluttering open, she became half conscious of the darkness outside the windows. Panic rose as she realized Jamie intended to make love right here, right now: Imagining him picking her up on to the counter like they’d done years before.

Her breath caught. “Jamie…”

Flushed, he looked at her as if through a fog, his breathing rough.

She wriggled round in his hold so she could turn off the flames under the bubbling saucepans with shaky fingers.

“The bed.” He said as she turned back to him and nodded slightly.

Jamie’s smouldering expression sent shivers akin to fear through her already ready and hot body. She gasped as with one arm around her waist and the other under her knees, he effortlessly picked her up against his rising and falling chest. She felt tiny, feminine and safe.

Arms tightly around his neck, she welcomed his grating stubble of his hard jaw against her left cheek and temple. She inhaled his familiar male scent of car leather and subtle body cologne that still clung to him. His fast heartbeat sounded like an ancient drum as they escalated to their haven.

Rachel was exhilarated to feel his erection against her side as he gently let her feet touch the bedroom floor. A sliver of light from the hall illuminated Jamie’s strong body as he loosened and yanked his tie off. Shucking off his shoes, he unbuttoned and threw off his shirt, unbuckled his belt and shed his remaining clothes off in short, smooth, sharp movements. All the while his glazed eyes concentrated on Rachel’s face and contours. Her hungry eyes enjoyed the play of his muscles and his need for her as she unzipped her skirt and let it puddle by her feet.

Naked and fully aroused, he stopped her fingers from what he obviously wanted to do. He unhooked her bra and separated the straps off her shoulders down her arms. Then Jamie softly tugged at her panties. She loved the slight scraping sensations against her thighs and legs as he freed her of her last piece of clothing. He kneeled into her abdomen and she felt his lips and tongue kiss, suck and lave at the sensitive skin around her navel.

She groaned and was afraid she would fall.

Strong fingers moulded her hips down to her thighs and up towards her waist. Then standing he urgently but gently pulled her into him. His warm chest and arm muscles were hard, stimulating her bare flesh where they connected. His fervour made her want him even more.

His hot breath stimulated the sensitive folds of her ear, as he lowered his mouth and licked and sucked ever so tantalizingly at one of her most erogenous spots on the side of her neck. Goosebumps multiplied as his mouth continued downward to capture one breast, then the other, with his slow yet persistent tongue and fingers.

Her nipples hardened to attention, her breathing becoming shallower and faster. She forked her shaky fingers through his thick hair, manoeuvring his head to catch his mouth with hers, honey-like need swelling within her womb. Wet and ready for him.

Just as her knees weakened he picked her up and lay her on the bed against cool, silk-soft sheets.

Not breaking eye contact he dipped his head again to her breasts, further lavishing his tongue and lips around each areola and the curves of her breasts. Worshipping them. Until she wanted to scream with impatience and agonizing pleasure. Again, he trailed warm kisses towards her quivering tummy, circling her navel until she thought she’d die from the erotic tension escalating within her. And then his lips descended to her pubic bone.

Her breath catching in her throat she knew she was about to combust with unbearable pleasure. Her emotions and over-sensitized, fevered skin of every part of her body was on high alert.

He parted her legs with sure, caressing fingers and lowered his tongue to her inner thighs, and then to her moist centre. She held her breath. He licked her as if she were an exotic fruit he’d hungered for all his life. He watched her staring at him before the pleasure took over everything.

She lay back, melting against the now too hot sheets.

She took in a much needed breath and then let it out. She raised her head to look at Jamie and the intense desire in his smile brought a myriad of feelings, of letting go of her remaining self-control. Jamie was king of her body and soul, and she loved it.

As delicious pleasure within her obliterated any conscious thought she surrendered wholly to the unrivalled ecstasy. Thrumming with waves of unrelenting rapture, at the mercy of her husband’s hands and mouth, her deep moans escalated into heavy low panting cries. Again and again. Until she couldn’t bear to be the only one within the orbit of such bliss.

Drawing her shaky, almost elastic body up she pulled Jamie’s head so he slowly rose above her. Leaving a trail of hot kisses on her jellied belly, her ribcage, right breast and neck, he stared down as he was finally above her. Supported on his elbows he kissed her deeply and again lowered his mouth to one nipple then the other. He groaned apparently in the same volcanic pleasure world he’d taken her to.

“Jamie, I need you inside me. Now. Please.” Her pleas came out desperate and wanton.

As he braced himself over her she couldn’t bear the split-second separation. She kneaded his straining biceps and shoulders as he manoeuvred himself between her legs. She luxuriated in the feel of his hard torso, rising and falling against her. Welcoming him, she wrapped her quivering legs around his waist and lower back and anticipated another full-fledged climax they were about to share together.

His erratic breathing rough, at last he entered her, slow but hard and steady, bringing another gasp of delight from Rachel. She smiled and then laughed with joy from such completeness in being in Jamie’s arms, inhaling his distinct scent now mingled with their lust and need. Her hungry fingers explored his sinewy shoulders and his straining back muscles, tightening her legs around his taut buttocks. She wanted him so deep inside her that she’d forget where her body stopped and his began.

She matched his every urgent thrust. His pleasure-filled eyes looked into hers as if needing to confirm she was in the same heaven he was.

Once again letting herself go, moaning out his name, she climbed the tip of the most exhilarating orgasm she’d ever had. She rose to new found depths, riding wave after joyous wave of bliss. Until she felt tears rolling down her temples and hairline. Her heart palpitated so erratically she was sure she’d die from too much love.

“Yes, Jamie, yes. I love you so much.” She whimpered.

Jamie’s laboured breathing matched hers. They were so attuned to each other’s needs. He looked down at her again this time as if he was seeing her for the first time in years. He groaned and then arched his back as if in blessed release. His sure strokes now forced her head closer towards the headboard. Their sweat-sheened torsos and limbs as well as their interlaced fingers bound them together.

Loving her soul mate’s heavy, pulsating body in and over her, to Rachel breathing right now was overrated.

“I love you….too.” He said almost inaudibly into her ear as their rollercoaster ride eventually calmed to a slow, throbbing, lulling stop.

Minutes passed and rolling beside her Jamie pulled her tighter to himself, into the magical chasm of their love. Their vibrating bodies sated. For now.

They had always had passion between them but not this heightened, frantic desire. Rachel smiled, her eyes shut as she nuzzled herself deeper into her husband’s embrace.

Life outside this room didn’t exist. Rachel realized that neither Brandon or her obsession with wanting to get pregnant had been on her mind since Jamie had entered the house.

Excerpt

There was something in the air…

Change was coming to Marietta.

Or more than likely it was a bit of wishful thinking.

Tomorrow was the first of December, when the Christmas frenzy kicked into high gear. Suzanna Simms usually found this to be the most fabulous time of the year. But this year, she just wanted the holidays to quietly pass her by. She rushed into the kitchen. Her gaze immediately moved to the clock on the microwave. It blinked “PF.” Power failure. Apparently the power had gone off last night just long enough to reset all of the clocks in the house, including her alarm clock.

A glance at her phone let her know she only had two more minutes before she was late for work. That never happened to her. She hated to be late for anything. And today they were switching the autumn decorations for Christmas ones at her jewelry/craft shop, Tangled Charms.

Suzanna grabbed the coffeepot and poured it into her mug. She’d never make it through the morning without some strong caffeine. She glanced in the kitchen cabinet for the lid. Suddenly the hot liquid scorched her skin. She righted the coffeepot. Setting it aside, she rushed to the sink. As cold water soothed the burn, she assured herself there was definitely something amiss in the air.

Meow.

She glanced down at Pixie. “Hey, girl. I didn’t forget you. Honest.”

Murr.

The black-and-white six-month-old kitten rubbed affectionately over Suzanna’s legs. Suzanna bent over and scratched behind Pixie’s ear. When Pixie wasn’t testing her boundaries, she was the sweetest furbaby. And she wanted her breakfast. First, Suzanna sopped up the coffee from the countertop. And then she placed a bowl containing canned cat food on Pixie’s mat. Satisfied that her morning chores were complete, Suzanna slipped on her coat and red scarf.

With her coffee in one hand and her oversized purse slung over her shoulder, she rushed out the door of her townhouse. A gust of icy cold air rushed past her. She snuggled deeper in her coat. December had blown in with a distinct chill. And so another blustery winter was about to descend upon Marietta, Montana.

She was halfway down the sidewalk when she spotted movement out of the corner of her eye. She turned her head to find a big—make that a ginormous—brown-and-white Saint Bernard running toward her. Its ears flapped as it ran and its jowls did the same. The closer it got, the bigger it seemed. Why couldn’t it be a Chihuahua or a Yorkie?

The breath caught in Suzanna’s throat as her palms grew clammy. Please stop.

She took a step back. There was no way she was going to outrun that dog. It let out a deep bark. Woof-woof.

And then all two hundred pounds or so of the dog was standing in front of her. She stared at it and it stared back at her with big brown eyes.

She should say something—do something, but panic had her tongue stuck to the roof of her mouth. And her heart felt as though it were lodged in her throat. She’d been afraid of dogs since she’d been bitten when she was young.

She should look around for someone to help her, but she didn’t dare take her gaze off the dog. The dog began sniffing her shoes and her jeans. What was it thinking? The dog circled her—

“Rufus, what are you doing?” asked a male voice.

The dog glanced up. Woof!

Once the dog ran to the man, Suzanna relaxed her stiff muscles and glanced over at the man.

“Don’t worry. He won’t hurt you.” The man sent her a friendly smile as the dog sat down next to him.

It was cold out, quite literally, and here this man was strutting around outside in a short-sleeved black T-shirt. It clung to his muscled chest, broad shoulders, and bulging biceps. She swallowed hard and struggled to recall what she’d been about to say.

Her gaze lifted up and up. My he’s tall. At least six feet of muscle. His jawline was chiseled with some scruff on it. His hair was short—like military short. And his eyes were blue. Not just blue. But a sky blue, the kind that she could get lost in for hours. He was quite a sexy package.

“You must be my new neighbor.” The townhouse next to hers was up for rent. She just hadn’t realized anyone had moved in.

How Characters Take on a Life of Their Own #amwriting #writertips #mgtab

girl-2884664_640

When I first started Tidal Falls back in two thousand fourteen I never dreamed it would be more than a two or three book series, yet here I am releasing number six on Tuesday and am in the middle of writing book seven now.

Where do the ideas come from?

The original cast of characters I created in Tidal Falls all insisted on stories of their own. No, really! They’re very strong-willed and refused to go to bed without their stories being told.

Each book brought new friends and family, conflicts, and yes, resolutions, but through it all the underlying plotline continued to feed the storyline and allowed it to grow and flourish.

Some authors like to leave their secondary characters as supporting actors, so to speak. I find most of mine tend to want to take over even though it’s not their turn!

This is good. The further into the Wounded Hearts series I get, the easier it is to write. I’ve already created a world for them, one filled with trials and tribulations they must overcome in order to find their happy-ever-afters.

Because after all, it’s all about the romance 🙂

Excerpt

Maggie stared out at the midnight sky and took her first easy breath since their precipitous escape that morning. She could hardly believe she was free; it didn’t seem possible. She’d already made peace with her conscience, knowing sooner or later she would be sold—most likely overseas—and would have to take her own life. It went against her upbringing to consider suicide, but it was either that or… she shuddered at the thought.

It was hard enough wondering about the women she’d already seen peddled away to the highest bidders. Her heart ached, not only for them, but for families left to hope and pray for miracles from a God who seemed to have forsaken them.

How do you like those Christian thoughts, Daddy?

She blinked rapidly until the big dipper came into view. She remembered the story her Iroquois mother told of the Great Bear who wandered freely through the sky. His massive paws helped him to hunt and fish the many rivers throughout the spring until his belly was full. He didn’t know three young braves had discovered him feeding and sought to kill him for his pelt and meat to feed their families during the long winter months.

The three braves chased the bear, trying to kill him, but he always escaped. All summer he ran, however the braves were strong and cunning. They caught up to him in the autumn, their arrows piercing his flesh until the Great Bear died.

His blood spilled from the sky, staining the foliage red and orange. The trees mourned, dropping all their leaves for their friend, the Great Bear.

As is the way of bears, the next spring Great Bear was reborn, and the three braves set out after him again.

“Look to the horizon, my child, and you will see this each year with the coming of spring; the cycle of life is never-ending. Remember this, Magdalena.” Her mother’s voice echoed in Maggie’s heart. Sometimes it felt like she was still that little girl listening with wide-eyed wonder to the stories of her heritage. Then reality would intrude and the innocence with which she’d once viewed the world evaporated.

Her mother believed in the reincarnation of her people. “We are strong,” she said, tucking a young Magdalena into her bed. “Our blood lives in the souls of the eagles; whose eyes can see into the future. The wolves; fast and cunning. And the bear; our eternal spirit brother.” She leaned over and kissed her daughter’s brow. “Remember your heritage, little one, and it will guide your steps.”

For the most part, her mother was right. When her father insisted on teaching her the ways of pick-pocketing and petty theft, her nimble fingers and swift feet had kept her out of the hands of the law. Too bad he never taught her how to fight. Maybe she could have protected her younger sister when… no, there was nothing she could have done as a twelve-year-old.

But, she could now.

She’d made a pledge on her sister’s deathbed. And for the next twenty years it had ruled her every thought and action. She’d been angry and bitter and could have followed her father’s thieving ways, if not for the man who took her under his wing after she was caught stealing cough syrup for her sick mother. He’d turned her life around, proved not all men were alike, and introduced her to martial arts. He’d also taught her sex could be for pleasure, not pain. When their relationship ended she’d come away heart-sore, but healthier for the experience.

Now this.

It seemed her fate in life to fight.

“What are you doing?” Olga said as she slid down beside her and leaned against the rock.

Maggie shrugged. “Thinking. Enjoying the fresh desert air.”

Olga chuckled. “I still cannot believe we got away. It’s a good thing those soldiers are dead, Chenglei would have carved them up for being idiots, anyway.”

Yes, he would have made their last breaths torture. As he would theirs, if he caught up to them. It was her job to make sure that didn’t happen.

Winn knows immediately he wants Tori Sterling on his side. She’s straight-talking, funny, smart, and passionate, and she makes his ever-restless spirit feel like it’s found home. But when a Derby-bound colt is targeted by a saboteur, and illegal acts mount up on Churchill Downs’ backside, Winn and his stable of misfits are prime suspects. He must convince Tori he’s not behind a tangled web of sabotage and a strange horse doping scandal.
Tori finds herself in a partnership with Winn that’s half detective team and all unexpected passion. But they’re soon racing against time. Someone is desperate to eliminate Tori and Winn’s investigating any way possible, and the two have to find out who before both of them lose their careers, their lives or, worse, their chance at love.
Award-winning author Lizbeth Selvig writes heartwarming contemporary romance. Whether set in a small town, on a huge western ranch, or at a Kentucky racetrack, her strong, fun and funny characters don’t mind poking at societal norms even while they’re finding their ways home to family and love. Lizbeth turned to fiction writing after working as a newspaper journalist and magazine editor, and raising an equine veterinarian daughter (handy, since there are usually too many horses in her stories) and a talented musician son (also handy because she’s been known to write about rock stars).  She shares life in Minnesota, where her first book series is set, with her best friend (aka her husband, Jan), an under-ridden gray Arabian gelding named Jedi, two human grandchildren, and her four-legged grandbabies of which there are over twenty, including a wallaby, three alpacas, a mammoth-eared donkey, a miniature horse, a pig, five dogs, six cats, and seven regular-sized horses (pics of all appear on her website http://www.lizbethselvig.com). In her spare time she loves to hike, quilt, read, and horseback ride. She also loves connecting with readers—so feel free to contact her any time!

Title: Missing Alaska
Author: Charime MacFarlane
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense

Blurb:
Kentucky holds a surprise for a young Native Alaskan man on the run, a young girl with a desperate need to get far from Chandler County.
Russell is running from the mess he made in Alaska during Thanksgiving. By allowing his resentment of his mother and step-father’s living arrangement to motivate him, he hurt both his mother and step-sister’s feelings. A road trip far from Alaska seemed like the cure. But Kentucky holds a surprise for Russ.
Gentry is the youngest of four children. Her sister and middle brother both joined the military and left her home to care for her father. Augie Dane is a ginseng hunter with a drinking problem. His oldest son isn’t much better. Gentry is on the run when Russ almost runs her over on Bald Knob Road. Things are about to get hot in Chandler County.
I came to Alaska kicking and screaming in 1976, and I never want to leave. I cut firewood on shares for money to get through the winter. I swore I would not live above the Alaska Range because it was too cold there and wound up in the Copper River Basin where it got just a cold as Fairbanks.
My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I experienced hearing it from my in-laws. Each time my husband got on the phone to Scotland after five seconds, I could hardly understand a word. I was my second husband’s chief mechanic’s helper and roadie.
I live in a cabin which is slowly being surrounded by the city and wish I were further out. My two cats and Husky-Collie mix dog are happy in our little slice of heaven called Alaska. In the silence of winter dreams of people and places provide a rich pool of ideas to explore.
As a reporter for the Copper Valley Views, Cherime MacFarlane received a letter of commendation from the Copper River Native Association for fair and balanced reporting.

EXCERPT

From Underneath The Mistletoe by Ava Bari

The officer who’d found her daughter was still there, and Amelia had yet to even acknowledge him. She rubbed her eyes and kept Grace at her hip as she looked up at the taller man… and instantly regretted choosing her most unflattering nightgown to wear to bed.

“Mrs. Eliot, I’m Officer Zanetti,” he said, offering a hand. She tried to ignore how strong his grip was. His hand was huge and completely engulfed hers.

“Thank you so much for finding my daughter, Officer,” Amelia said. “I really can’t thank you enough.”

“It’s all in a day’s work, Ma’am,” he said, his smile bringing her back to her teenage years when she’d fawned over boy band members and actors.

She thanked him several more times as the other cops left and Grace began to yawn and lean heavily on her mother. Deciding to save all punishments until tomorrow, Amelia hoisted Grace into her arms. “I think I’d better get her to bed now.”

Officer Zanetti nodded. “Yeah you should.” He leaned over, catching Grace’s attention. She was half-asleep but awake enough to listen when he spoke. “Stay in bed this time, okay? Remember what we said.”

“Uh huh.” She took the letter out of her pocket and then, for whatever reason, handed it to the officer. “You promise Santa will read it?”

“If he doesn’t, I will read it to him myself,” he swore, as serious as if he had his hand on the Bible.

“Okay, but don’t open it until you see him,” Grace said. She nestled into the thick cottony fabric of Amelia’s nightgown and was asleep in seconds. Amelia gave Officer Zanetti a questioning look.

“Ah yeah…” He rubbed his neck. “I might have told her I work for Santa Claus to get her to come with me.”

Amelia chuckled. Her heart had yet to slow down all the way, but there was something hilarious about this tough guy cop getting embarrassed. “You’re a Christmas elf?”

“A bodyguard, thank you,” he said, affronted.

“That would’ve been my next guess.” He certainly looked the part, as the unhelpful part of Amelia’s brain was quick to point out.

They stood in awkward silence for a time until Grace shifted in Amelia’s arms, reminding her they probably shouldn’t stand outside in freezing cold weather. Officer Zanetti seemed to realize this at the same time. He coughed and stuffed his hands in his pockets.

“Okay, looks like everything is good here. I’ll let you two get some sleep.”

“Would you like some coffee before you go?” Amelia asked. “I feel like I owe you for finding my daughter.”

“Just keep her safe in bed tonight, Ma’am,” he said, walking back to his car. “Have a Merry Christmas.”

“You too,” Amelia called out, but he’d already started his engine, and she had no idea if he heard her.

When Dr. Jared Johnson’s research project collapses, so does he. He tosses the funding rejection letter in his office wastebasket and his plans to marry the love of his life out the window.
The last thing he wants to do is return to his home town, Chandlerville, Kentucky. An unexpected call from his grandmother, a lifelong resident of the small town, convinces him that all things indeed happen for a reason and perhaps this is the right time to reestablish his roots and start anew.
When he arrives–single, with no intent to marry, he’s shocked to learn that the town has unanimously approved his pastoral appointment to the newly refurbished 100-year-old Baptist church. Despite his divinity training, Jared never intended to pastor a church—not when his specialty is psychological profiling.
As fate would have it, the evil spirits that begin to permeate the town and its good-hearted citizens shortly after his arrival challenge his technical skills, experience and community relationships. To complicate matters, a local angel finds herself in the eye of the storm causing Jared to re-evaluate his past and question his future.

Ani’s Advent Invitation: Christmas Reflections with D. G. Kaye

A beautiful #Holiday #poem by D.G. Kaye as first shown on Sue Vincent’s blog.

Sue Vincent's Daily Echo

Well, so far, for my campaign to not be dressed in something silly this year..after the antler debacle… I’ve had letters from cats, dogs, and various other creatures, including two-legses. What is really heartwarming is that, seeing a small dog in need of some serious help here, everyone has pulled together, old friends and new, for a fellow creature in (potential) trouble.

And it isn’t serious trouble, not this time anyway. Just a small attack on my dignity….and I don’t have all that much of it that I can afford to lose any more!

Now, lots of two-legses around the blogosphere seem to be ready to help when folks of various species need a hand or a paw… and ‘specially at Christmas. Wouldn’ it be nice if everybody  did the same, all year round? Debby seems to think so too…

Terror
by Eamonn Hickson
Adult Thriller
Paperback & ebook, 336 pages
April 29th 201

Have you ever felt that society consciously tries to undermine you?

In a society where everyone strives for growth, where everyone tries to build towards the heavens, there are some who wish to bring it plummeting down.

Terror is a thriller in which three people from different walks of life find a common enemy in the contemporary world. Yet, unlike most, they decide to do something about it.

Following his best friend’s death, military man Milton Haynes is forced to see a psychiatrist while he challenges his dishonourable discharge. Ally Winston, one year after being viciously assaulted, struggles to slot into the life her father has laid out for her, while Nestor Frings returns to Boston to find his parents have sold their home due to financial issues.

The three initially voice their pains through non-violent means, however, they soon find their efforts futile. In a world where outsiders are considered dangerous and are not to be trusted, it will be the insiders who do the damage. Follow Milton, Ally and Nestor as they come to, what they perceive to be, the inevitable conclusion: they must commit a terror attack.

Praise for the Book

“Eamonn Hickson brings the fascinating, dingy, and complex streets of Boston alive in his new novel TERROR, a probing novel of survival in the modern world. TERROR is a masterful portrait of the hard decisions and harder lives that must be lived during a dark time in American history – the present.” — Self-Publishing Review

Reviews of the Author’s Other Work

“…a suspense thriller with a fascinating version of heaven versus hell that lingers after closing the pages.”

“Eamonn Hickson writes a vivid story of a war between angels and demons, and Heaven and Hell. The story captivates the audience as you witness deception, lies, and Heavenly Hosts that are working for the enemy.”

“Find yourself enmeshed in a roller coaster ride to a mind-numbing conclusion that will remain with you many a day to come.”

I’ve lost control of my character. My bad!

You know how it works: you spend days, weeks or even months deciding on their appearance, memories, experiences, dreams, motivations, fears, desires, hopes… and they give you the middle finger halfway through your novel. If this hasn’t happened to you, can you tell me how you managed to keep a tight rein on your characters.

The three protagonists in Terror were supposed to follow orders and fit into a predestined trifecta: Milton, a discharged military man was to be the leader; Nestor, physically inferior, he was to become the ‘brains’ of the operation; Ally, the sole female in the group, was to provide balance to the men’s contrasting modes, and become the most ‘complete’ character of the lot.

About one-third of the way through the novel, Ally decided to make her own destiny. The obstacles I had placed in her life no longer seemed adequate to slow her progress enough, her compassionate self had been replaced by a competitive beast, and suddenly she was leading the story. I tried to bring her back into line but each time it felt wrong. I had no option but to allow Ally to make her own decisions—and I believe Terror is all the better for it.

Has this happened to you? It’s both thrilling and oddly embarrassing. Of course, I get to decide who does what and when they do it in my writing but, did the ingredients that I picked from the outset for Ally mean this was always going to happen? If I want magenta but I mix blue and yellow together, no matter how much I desire magenta, I will not get it. I’ll have to satisfy myself with that answer—a character didn’t come to life and decide the course of my novel, but it was the settings, circumstances and character flaws that decided their fate.

I hope this has happened to more than just me.

About Katy Ames:
Katy Ames has spent most of her life on the East Coast and hopes to spend more of it in the UK. In part, so she can indulge in her serious plaid obsession. There isn’t a teenage drama on the CW or a period British TV show she hasn’t binge-watched at least twice. And she can be persuaded to do most things with the promise of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, or a nap, not necessarily in that order. Katy is mom to a small human who has an obscene amount of energy and a blissful ability to ignore swear words, and wife to a man whose reading habits are far too serious. Katy and her family reside in Washington, D.C., a city she where never planned to live and loves so much she’d be happy to talk about for hours. Just ask.

#ChooseYourOwnRomance, by Katy Ames
When I joined this wonderful and wild world of romance, I fell in love instantly – with the readers. You guys are enthusiastic, supportive, and passionate. And some of the loveliest people I’ve every had the pleasure to chat with, either in person or online.
I created #ChooseYourOwnRomance not just to thank you for being so awesome, but to bring readers into the heart of the story. Literally. By answering a few “this or that” questions, my followers on Instagram selected the trope, the location, the hero, and the heroine for the romance I’m currently writing.
Every week, I post a chapter on Instagram and readers get to decide how the story continues. Do they kiss? Does he stay? Does she go? Is there a love triangle? Do they have sex…?
And every Thursday, around 8 PM EST, I post the next installment, based on the winning votes from the previous week. It’s like an old-school Choose Your Own Adventure book, but for romance. (gasp!) (and, yes, I dated myself just then)
The current story focuses on Eden and Jude, childhood friends from a small town who haven’t spoken in years. The silence and distance have turned these once-friends into enemies.
