At a magical time of year…

Can a cowboy help falling in love?

For single dad Owen Caufield, living and working at Sweetheart Ranch for a month is the perfect change of pace. While the cowboy turned wedding officiant can now spend more time with his children, Molly O’Malley, his new boss, is less thrilled. A wedding ranch isn’t the best place for three rambunctious youngsters. But amid the chaos—and the coming holidays—it may be the best place to fall in love…

Where do you get your ideas?

Yeah, it’s a question writers get asked all the time. I wish I had something glib and interesting and fun to say in response instead of, “The internet or the news or while walking my dog,” all which happen to be the truth. That is, until recently…

Nowadays, I love being asked where I got the idea for Sweetheart Ranch, my new series from Harlequin Heartwarming. That’s because the answer comes from a wonderfully happy occasion in my life! In early fall of 2016, I was spending hours and hours online researching nearby wedding venues. I never thought I’d get married again, but, surprise, surprise, the magic happened at a high school reunion a couple years earlier when I (re)met my now husband and, as the saying goes, sparks flew. If you had told the two of us back in sophomore Spanish class that we’d one day get married, neither of us would have believed you!

So, here I am researching wedding venues online, and I came across a charming Victorian house in a neighboring town that looked promising. Ultimately, we chose a different location for our nuptials, but I still loved that Victorian house and kept thinking about it. Being a writer of contemporary westerns, I naturally envisioned a country home rather than a Victorian house. As ideas are prone to do, that one grew into a western-themed wedding ranch complete with hayrides and honeymoon cabins. For me, there was never any other name for my imaginary place except Sweetheart Ranch. So glad my editor agreed!

The premise for A COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL is also close to my heart. My daughter was asked to officiate her good friend’s wedding at about the same time as I was researching venues. No, she’s not a minister, but it turns out getting ordained online really isn’t too difficult. Again, having that writer’s imagination, I started picturing this good looking cowboy who arrives at Sweetheart Ranch as a temporary substitute wedding officiant, his online certificate in hand. Oh, and he’s a single dad with three young children because that’s the way I rock and roll. From there, the story took off.

For the record, I wasn’t kidding when I said ideas come to me while walking my dog. Once, years ago, while I was living in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, I stared up at them one evening while walking the dog and wondered to myself if there were any wild horses still living there. That was the beginning of my Mustang Valley series which turned out to be thirteen books long. Here’s hoping Sweetheart Ranch has a similar success!

Warmest wishes to you and yours,

Cathy

    1. One of my customers had the same experience. Madly in love as teens, separated, married other spouses, had kids, then many years later, found each other and the same old spark again. So sweet!
