The Rancher’s Family by @BarbaraWDaille #NewRelease #Romance @HarlequinBooks

Cover original The Rancher's Family

Thanks for sharing my new release, Jacquie!

I love this cover!!

Book Blurb:

“Are you my new mommy?”

She certainly hopes so…

After a devastating loss, Cara Leonetti’s dreams of a husband and children are on hold. But Cowboy Creek’s local matchmaker thinks otherwise! And Cara finds herself unexpectedly entangled in the day-to-day family chaos of widower Wes Daniels and his two small children. She’s falling hard, but the strong, silent rancher doesn’t trust in love. Can Cara put her own fears aside and show Wes that they’re stronger together?

Excerpt from The Rancher’s Family:

When Cara closed the laptop, Wes reached out to help her to her feet. Though her hand was small, her grip was strong. Her fingers, slim and warm, fit perfectly in his.

Part of him wanted to keep holding on. The sane part of him made him release her hand the minute she stood upright.

“Thanks.” She spent a while putting the computer on the dresser, settling it just so and fiddling with the lid—all unnecessarily, as far as he could see. Finally, she said, “I have to confess.”

That explained the delaying tactics. He waited.

“I’d have made even better progress if I hadn’t been online most of the afternoon.”

“Don’t tell me. You’re an internet shopper?”

“No.”

“A closet gamer?”

“No, not that.”

“Addicted to hanging out outline?”

“Not that, either. I’m looking for a job.”

“Sounds like you have one—with Andi.” He expected her to laugh or at least smile. Wrong again. Her expression suddenly turned solemn.

“No, that’s just temporary. I really need to get back home.”

Yet another thing he knew about her—where she lived. “What’s the attraction in Phoenix?”

Now she grinned. “Oh…the heat, the saguaros, the local petting zoo. Just think of all the animals Mark could find there to inspire his drawings. Where does he get his interest in art, anyhow?”

Nice. With one quick question—and that stunning grin—she had deftly turned the conversation away from a topic she evidently wanted to avoid. Unfortunately, she had also led them to one he didn’t want to discuss.

A woman on her phone pushed open the door. “I understand you’re trying to protect me, but this is a little extreme don’t you think?” she said as she jogged down the steps and onto the sidewalk. Ending her call, she turned around and glanced up at Donovan. Her dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail and her eyes were covered by aviator sunglasses. “Well, come on. He’s going to send you to the station regardless of what I have to say about it.”

This must be the niece. Dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt knotted at her hip, she didn’t give him many clues as to what she might have to do today. Donovan could see why Dillon told him Captain was protective. She was attractive, albeit a tad rude. She stormed ahead before coming to an abrupt stop.

“I was about to call for a car, but I assume you have one?”

Donovan moseyed up beside her. “I do. Where are you headed in such a hurry?”

She took off her sunglasses, revealing the most stunning crystal-blue eyes. “The station,” she said in a flustered tone. “I have a meeting before my show.”

“Station?” The only station Donovan was aware of was the one he just left.

Kelly’s head rolled back and she sighed. “He didn’t tell you anything, did he?”

“I was directed to go where you go, miss. That’s what he told me and that’s what I’ll have to do.”

“I work at K104, the radio station. I need to get there in the next twenty minutes or my station manager is not going to be happy with me. This would be the same station manager who will hopefully be renewing my contract soon and I really don’t need her to be unhappy. Maybe I can drive? Which car is yours?” She held out her hand as if he might actually consider relinquishing his keys to her. That was not happening. No one drove his truck except him.

“I’m right over here,” he said, pointing to his black F150 and wishing he had asked for one of the station’s cars. Being on desk duty meant he was only allowed to use his personal vehicle.

Kelly didn’t follow him. “Since when does the Nashville PD drive around in pickup trucks?” she asked. “Can I see your badge?”

Donovan grimaced. That was a problem. No gun or badge. “Funny story,” he said, slowly spinning around to face her and the can of pepper spray that was pointed at him.

Excerpt

A heavy knock on the front door startled Brooke. She straightened, rubbed her cheek and blinked. The first rays of the sun streamed across the kitchen counter like nature’s own alarm clock, announcing the arrival of a new day.

Another knock rattled through her. Brooke signaled Luna into a stay position with the shift of her hand. Then cracked open the front door.

A younger version of Rick in a paramedic’s uniform grinned at her. Except for the blond that softened his red hair, making it lighter than Rick’s deep auburn. His eyes would’ve been green if not for the intense copper swirls. His height and build would’ve been well suited for a football field but filled out his uniform perfectly.

“I saw the lights on.” He lifted several cloth shopping bags and his smile, then added, “Grocery delivery.”

Brooke wanted to close the door. His appealing half grin could disarm her if she was someone else. Someone who believed in fairy tales, storybook romance and that once-in-a-lifetime love could happen again. But she couldn’t shut the door. This was Dan, Rick’s son. And her stomach growled. “How much do I owe you?”

“I’m not interested in money.” He handed the bags to her.

But he wanted something.

She can save his ranch…

But can he forgive her?

Maya Burton knows she’s the last person rancher Caleb Dunne wants to see. After all, she survived the crash that killed his sister, and then left town. Now she has to convince the stubborn cowboy that she can help him save his ranch. But once she earns his trust—and his heart—will she be able to walk away?

GoodreadsAmazonB&NHarlequiniBooksKobo

Excerpt

The man stepped slowly onto the trail from some low bushes, where he must have been hiding. In the dim moonlight he was a dark shadow. Maya could see the outline of his cowboy hat, but not much else about him. Except in one hand, he held…a rifle.

Maya froze—the gun changing everything.

“It’s okay.” The man’s voice was low and steady, like he was trying to be reassuring. “I’m sorry if I scared you.”

Maya’s heart wouldn’t slow. Her breath wouldn’t fill her lungs. She needed to calm down, to get back in control.

But it was a strange man. With a gun. On a hiking trail. At night.

This wasn’t good. Worse than a lion. Her thoughts sped, frantic. This trail wasn’t that far from the highway. Was he some kind of homeless wanderer? A serial killer?

She had to get a grip. She’d spent her entire adult life in the wilderness. Had never met a problem she couldn’t handle. But that wilderness had been remote and isolated. Not like this area, so close to cities and towns. And people.

She tried to put authority in her shaking tone. “I’m with the Department of Wildlife. Lower your weapon.”

He lowered it to his side and pointed it toward the ground.

“Is it loaded?”

“Yes.”

Maya’s blood chilled when she heard the safety click. He’d been ready to shoot. Could so easily have ended her life with just a twitch of a finger. The knowledge rippled down her spine, and one of her knees started shaking like it had a mind of its own.

The man spoke quietly. “Did you get hurt when you fell? Do you want some light?”

Her flashlight. She should have reached for it right away. Maya grabbed it now and directed its beam straight at his face.

“Hey!” He tilted his head down and brought a forearm across his eyes. “Can you shine that somewhere else?”

“Not until you put the gun on the ground.” She shoved every ounce of confidence she’d ever felt into her voice.

“Not easy to do when you’re blinding me.”

“Just put it down.” Her heart was going to pound right through her ribs if he didn’t get rid of that gun.

“Okay! Hang on.” He walked a few steps backward and slowly bent to set the gun on the ground. As he straightened, he tilted his hat back and looked right at her, squinting to protect his eyes. “Can you move the light now?”

She couldn’t move the light. Didn’t know if she’d ever move anything again, because now she could see his face, and it was Caleb. Caleb Dunne.

Some sparks last forever.

But once burned…

World traveler Dr. Scott Willingham is known for being calm and levelheaded—except where Volta Morgan is concerned. In the ten years since they parted, Scott still can’t forget her. Now he’s come to Alaska to find Volta and finally let her go, only to find their attraction is stronger than ever. Can Scott leave her behind one last time…or has he truly found a place to call home?

GoodreadsAmazonB&NHarlequinKoboiBooks

Excerpt

Volta and Mike carried the portable unit through the door of the clinic while Bridget disappeared into the second room, where they could hear Paul’s voice: “That’s it, babe. You’re doing great. Ouch—” Volta chuckled to herself. She’d been on the receiving end of some of those hand clenches during labor. Lori was one of the gentlest people Volta knew, but sometimes it took a lot to make it through those big contractions.

“Hi, everyone. Bridget Hickel, flight nurse. Bad news, I’m afraid,” Bridget announced. “Mount Spurr blew its top, and we’re grounded.”

“The volcano erupted?” Daniel’s voice.

“Yes. We were already two-thirds of the way here, so we kept on coming. Unfortunately, we’re not flying out again until the ash cloud is gone. But we did bring an incubator. They’re carrying it in now.”

“Where do you want it?” Mike asked Volta, swinging his end around to fit it into the waiting room.

Let’s set it here for now,” Volta suggested, nodding toward a clear space against the wall. “It sounds pretty crowded in the exam room.” They set the unit on the floor.

“I’ll head over to Zeke’s and see what he knows,” Mike told Volta. “Unless you need me.”

She’d forgotten Mike’s cousin operated an air taxi service out of Sparks. “I don’t think so since we can’t fly, but I’ll call if we do. Thanks, Mike.”

Volta headed toward the exam room, but before she reached the door, another voice drifted out, reassuring and calm. “Good job, Lori. Not much longer now. Try to relax for a minute. Slow, easy breaths.”

Volta stopped in her tracks. She knew that voice, deep and smooth, with just a bit of drawl. But it couldn’t be. The owner of the voice she knew was working on the other side of the world. No doubt this was some other baritone-voiced doctor from Texas. The voice continued, “You’re at a ten. Doing great. Next contraction, you’ll be able to push.”

Journey to Sweetheart Cove with a #Free #Romance

It’s Victoria Day weekend in Canada and I want to celebrate the onset of summer with a sale and some pics from my keyhole garden 🙂

First the sale. Sweetheart Cove is #Free from May 17- 21!

Josie Sparks is looking for escape after a disastrous relationship. A summer job on a small Pacific Northwest island seems perfect. That is, until she meets her irascible new boss. She thinks she can help his sweet little girl–he’s another story.

Jacob Samuels needs someone reliable to care for his special needs daughter, but is sorry he trusted his sister with the task when help arrives in the shape of a too-young, too-tempting therapist with pain-filled eyes he can’t ignore.

Sand, surf, and soft island breezes bring two lonely hearts together in this heartwarming tale of second chance romance and a love that lasts forever.

What Readers are Saying

Often romance novels can be cliche and formulaic – guy meets girl, etc. I never got that feeling with this novella. The characters were engaging and likable and behaved in a normal fashion. Sure Jacob Samuels is handsome, and Josie Sparks is beautiful, but isn’t that what love does to people?

If you are looking for a feel-good novel that restores your faith in humanity, slip into the world of “Sweetheart’s Cove.” Pack a bag. You might want to stay awhile. ❤

Colleen Chesebro

The setting is beautifully described—I could smell the salt air, feel the sun on my skin and the sand underfoot. Throw in a puppy (which she did) and you’ve got a fool-proof recipe for a delightful read.

I can’t wait for the next one.

Writester

This is such a heartwarming, lovely story, complete with a moody widower, his disabled sweetie of a young daughter, a cute puppy and a “jilted at the altar” heroine.

Josie smiled and waited patiently for Jane to make her move. “Don’t worry, you’ve got this,” she encouraged the little girl.

Jane grunted and leaned forward in her wheelchair, teeth scraping her bottom lip. “I’m stuck.”

“Take your time, there’s no rush.”

She glanced out at the evening sky. “Daddy will be home soon.”

Josie’s pulse skipped a beat. Two weeks later and still the thought of Jacob’s infrequent appearances sent her into a tizzy. He was just so… masculine. She’d managed to keep their interactions to a bare minimum, but sooner or later he was going to want a report on his daughter’s progress. Hopefully, he understood her decision to take the time to build trust with Jane before attempting much in the way of therapy. Hence, the chess game she was currently losing.

“Your dad will have to play a game, so you can show him how good you are,” she said.

Jane sighed. “He doesn’t have time to play.” She reached out to move a pawn, then changed her mind and slid the rook horizontally across the board, capturing an unsuspecting knight.

Josie looked at her dwindling pieces and grinned. “Just as well, it wouldn’t be fair to him.”

Jane giggled.

She was such a sweetheart. Jacob should be here. It should’ve been him teaching Jane the intricate moves of chess and taking pride in her aptitude for the game. She wouldn’t be six forever, these moments were precious.

The underlying sadness in the Samuels household carried an almost physical presence. “Is your father away a lot?” she asked. She’d looked, but there were no pictures or really any feminine touches at all in the home. It was as though Jane’s mom never existed. She didn’t know the full situation, or if father and daughter shared treasured memories, but they were an important step in Jane’s recovery. She would have to corner the dragon, so to speak, and find out what could be done to help the child.

Jane fiddled with the knight she’d captured, curls brushing her cherub cheeks. “More now than he used to be. He says business is booming and he needs to strike while the iron’s hot—whatever that means.”

Or he was using his work to avoid the issues at home.

“Well, he has to have a good reputation to be that busy. You must be very proud of him.” Josie moved a pawn and took a drink of the punch they’d made before the game. “Mmm, this is delicious. Did you try it yet?” As with the chess, Jane had shown a natural aptitude in the kitchen, mixing and matching juices and ginger ale into a delightful cocktail beverage. They were going to bake brownies tomorrow. Everyday tasks like these would instill confidence as well as increasing dexterity without the connotations of physical therapy. She’d found her patients performed much better under positive reinforcement and exercises that pushed conventional boundaries.

Jane reached out to the fancy snifter they’d used for the drinks, but her fingers caught the chess board and pushed it up against the glass, which was sitting too close to the edge of the table and tipped over, hitting the floor with a crash. Her mouth dropped open as the cold liquid splashed up her legs.

Josie smiled and was about to reassure the girl when Mount Samuels erupted.

“Don’t move,” Jacob snarled, dropping the pack he’d walked in with and hurrying across the room to the wheelchair. “Are you hurt?” he asked his daughter, leaning over her head like a dark cloud of doom.

“N… no,” she said, tears clinging to thick, dark lashes. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I didn’t mean to drop the glass.”

He shot Josie a cold glare. “I know that, Pumpkin. Let’s get you washed up, shall we?”

He backed the wheelchair away from the table and turned towards the bedrooms. “Miss Sparks, there are towels in the kitchen. See if you can clean the mess without cutting yourself.” He strode a few feet and glanced over his shoulder. “And don’t go anywhere. I want to talk to you.”

Josie frowned as he walked away. Accidents were bound to happen. He couldn’t wrap his daughter in bubble wrap. She was bound to get hurt now and then, it was part of life.

She rescued the chess board from the river of juice dampening the wood, then side-stepped the glass to hurry into the kitchen for towels and a container for the broken pieces. Maybe they should have used Jane’s plastic cups for their drinks, but Josie wasn’t sorry they hadn’t—even with the unhappy ending. She’d seen the little girl’s eyes light up for the first time since they’d met. She didn’t need to be treated with kid gloves. Most people thrived with a challenge and picking up a glass tumbler while playing a game of chess had allowed Jane to see the possibilities.

No, she wasn’t sorry.

“Miss Sparks, what do you think you’re doing?”

The gravelly texture of Jacob’s voice rolled up her spine and caused an involuntary shiver just as she lifted jagged glass from the floor. Blood spurted. Josie gasped and dropped the offending piece into the container before reaching for a napkin to cover the wound.

“Don’t yell,” she snapped. Uncomfortable with him towering over her, she stood then wished she hadn’t as the room swayed—or was that her?

“Whoa,” he said, grasping her arm to steady her. “A nurse that can’t stand the sight of blood, huh?” He urged her into a chair and left to wet a cloth in the kitchen sink.

“Therapist,” she called, irritated with her temporary weakness and exasperated with him for noticing. “It’s not the same thing.”

He returned with a damp rag and gently took her hand. He uncovered the injury, checked for glass, then wrapped her finger. “You’ll survive.” He tipped her chin and gazed into her eyes. Something… heated passed between them.

Josie swallowed and held her breath.

He released her and took a step away, clearing his throat. “My daughter has limited mobility. Please take care in the future so that you don’t endanger her safety again.” He waved a hand at the chess board. “And save the games for when you’re off-duty, if you don’t mind. I pay you to work with Jane and help her accept her lifestyle, not to throw a party.”

He stomped out of the room and left her fuming. A party with a six-year-old and a glass of punch.

Go her.

Then the memory of the heat in his stormy blue-gray eyes washed over her and she felt dizzy all over again.

She’s sworn to protect…

But does that include a speeding celebrity?

Violet Hawks is a by-the-books police officer—so when she catches a man speeding, she arrests him. Only, the man is famous race car driver Josh Stevens. To make amends, Josh launches a charm campaign, and it works on the small town…and on Violet. But when Josh is connected to an investigation, Violet begins to wonder—can she trust her instincts when her heart is involved?

Excerpt

Violet knew she had dues to pay. She was okay with that. Still, she would have rather done so in Los Angeles or Chicago where her detective skills would have been tested nearly every day and advancement would have been faster. Or so she thought. Trent Davis’s Drug Task Force had made significant inroads and arrests last year. Isabelle’s husband, Scott, had written a prize-winning newspaper article on his eyewitness report to Davis’s bust bringing down the notorious and elusive Le Grand gang. Now a new gang was taking over. If she could contribute to this investigation, she could become a permanent member on Davis’s team. After that? The possibilities were endless.

Trent rubbed the pleased smile off his face and turned to Violet. “Did your mother have an idea what kind of car it was?”

“She said Maserati. My brother Eric always had posters of Italian race cars in his room. She said it was something like that.”

“It could be anything,” Sal interjected.

Trent unfolded his arms. “How many Maseratis have you seen around here? Even in tourist season, Sal?”

“None.”

Chief Williams pointed at Violet. “Hawks, I’m ordering you on a stakeout. Davis, you get her outfitted with what she needs. If something is going on up there on or around 1000 North, I want to know about it. This makes sense. It’s close to the Michigan state line. The interstate is a stone’s throw away. Those county roads up there are a spiderweb. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed my turn and ended up in Three Oaks, Michigan.” He cleared his throat.

Trent rose and walked toward Violet. Sal was behind him. He lowered his voice as they headed toward Trent’s desk. “Congrats, Hawks. But, while I’m ordering up a car for you, I want you to search that database.” He pointed to the computer on his desk. “Don’t look for Garcia. Look for Maserati sales in the tristate area.”

*

As she scanned the early May orchards, she savored the sweet taste of satisfaction on her lips. She’d stepped up to the plate, and finally, she felt she was part of a team.

The radio chirped.

“Hawks?”

She grabbed the square shoulder mic. “Sir?”

“What have you got?” Trent  asked.

“Nothing.” She sat up straighter. Her ears pricked as she heard the sound of an engine. This wasn’t a tractor or a slow-moving old truck taking fruit saplings out to plant. It was something she’d never heard before.

Holding the binoculars again, she saw a streak of blue through a blind of windbreak trees to the far south.

“Are you still there?” Trent asked.

“I got something.”

“What?” His voice pitched with interest.

“I don’t…know…but it’s moving like a bullet train.”

“Use your radar gun. How fast?”

She snatched the radar gun from the passenger seat, aimed and tagged the vehicle, whose make she still couldn’t identify.  “Holy crap. Sorry, sir.” She turned on her car’s engine already anticipating the chase. “Two zero two.”

“Talk later. Go!”

“Roger. Out.”

She flung the radar gun and binoculars to the passenger seat, stomped on the gas pedal and shot dirt from under her tires. The blue bullet was streaking down the country road as if the devil was on its  back. As Violet sped the Taurus over seventy, then eighty miles an hour, she knew she’d never outrace her prey.

She’d have to outsmart him.

Knowing that Jasper Brown had bisected  his enormous orchard years ago with a dirt path wide enough for his truck, she headed for that familiar dirt alley that separated the apple trees from the pear trees.

Turning sharp right, she tore down the bumpy trail that seemed a lot more hazardous today than it had ten years ago when she used to ride her bike home from apple picking. She tightened her seat belt and hit the gas. From the right, she could see the blue sports car approaching. It would pass her, but she’d have it within her sights.

As she burst out of the farm’s dirt path and up the slight bank, the blue bullet screamed past her. The driver was a blur.

“Oh, no you don’t.” Violet’s squad car nearly leaped onto the pavement and made chase. She turned on her light bar and siren. “Officially, you’re mine.”

Expecting the blue sports car to slow down now that her lights and siren were on, Violet was shocked when it kicked up its speed. Convinced she had the drug dealer dead to rights, she wasn’t about to let up. She plunged the gas to the floor. The Taurus could do up to one-fifty, but this sports car was out of her league.

Just then she heard Trent’s voice. “Officer Hawks, keep this line open.”

“Sir. Yes, sir.”

“Report.”

“I’m coming up on 350 East. I’m in pursuit. I’ve never seen this car make. I’ll shoot the license. It’s over two hundred miles an hour. I can’t overtake. I need backup.”

“County deputy sheriffs are on their way.”

“Ten four.”

“Stay with him. You got something.”

In the background over the radio, Violet could hear Trent speaking to the county sheriff’s dispatcher.

Trent’s voice was stern. “County is close. They’re forming a barricade two and half miles from you. Back off.”

She smiled. “Ten four.” She turned off her radio. Violet kept her foot depressed. This was her perp. Her collar. She was going to see it to the end. When the county sheriff barricade stopped this drug dealer, she would be there and she would make the arrest. Glory was within her reach. And possibly a promotion.

He may not be perfect…

But he’s perfect for her!

Ryan DeMere is definitely enjoying the perks of being Sweetheart Ranch’s new wrangler—the best is working with head chef Bridget O’Malley. He’s fallen head over spurs for the talented and determined beauty. There’s just one hiccup. Bridget is holding out for Mr. Right—and Ryan doesn’t quite meet her requirements. But he’s determined to win Bridget over, because Ryan may not be perfect…but maybe their love could be.

Excerpt

“You could join me.” His grin widened, and he raised his china plate. “If you haven’t eaten yet.”

Of all the nerve! He was flirting with her.

When she first glimpsed him, she’d thought how lucky his wife was to marry a tall, good-looking man like him. If not for the fact he was a groom, she’d have mistaken him for one of the local cowboys, what with his well-fitting Wranglers, scuffed boots, Western work shirt and Stetson, which he’d removed and hung on the antique hat rack in the corner.

Now she felt sorry for the bride. They’d been married a mere two days, and her husband was hitting on another woman. Hard as it was for her, Bridget refrained from giving him a piece of her mind.

“Hey, this is good,” he said, biting into a croissant.

“Thank you.” She pivoted and started for the kitchen.

“Wait. Can’t you stay a while?”

She very nearly blurted, “Does your wife have any idea what a jerk you are?” but held her tongue. He was a guest at the ranch, and she wouldn’t offend him.

All of a sudden her grandmother glided into the parlor. She barely noticed Bridget and instead addressed the man. “Good, you’re here. And getting some breakfast.” She patted Bridget’s arm as she skirted past her. “Thanks for taking care of him.”

“My pleasure,” Bridget answered tersely.

“I got distracted and forgot to tell you earlier that Ryan was coming by.”

Her grandmother’s words caused Bridget to stop short. “Ryan?”

“He’s applying for the wrangler job. He bought the old Chandler place. Nora introduced us the other day. She says he’s a heck of a worker.”

Nora being her grandmother’s best friend, a part-time employee of the ranch when they were shorthanded, and neighbor to the Chandlers before they’d moved. She’d talked more than once about the nice, young, single man next door, emphasizing single.

“Oh. I didn’t know.” Bridget felt her cheeks warm. Thank goodness she’d kept her mouth shut. “Nice to meet you, Ryan. Good luck with the interview.”

In the kitchen she expelled a long breath, vastly relieved. Meeting Ryan had left her disconcerted. First, because she’d mistaken him for the groom from cabin five. Then, because once she learned he was Nora’s neighbor, she’d been briefly intrigued by him.

She could be The One

If he’ll let her in.

The rustic mountain town of Golden, Georgia, is the ideal place for crime scene investigator Deke Matthews to heal after a tragedy left him questioning everything. But there’s another reason he’s here, and moonlighting as an adventure guide provides the perfect cover. It doesn’t include falling for his boss. Attorney Grace Harper is back in Golden only long enough to save her family business. Just when Deke has found the woman to share his life with…

Excerpt

While she tidied up, Deke blew out a breath and rested his hip against the counter. With the worst part over, he now noticed his boss’s blond hair glow under the harsh kitchen lighting. Her fair skin attested to her not personally leading the outdoor tours. He was intrigued by the softness that was in direct contrast to her very take-control attitude.

“So,” he said, “you’re a nurse, too?”

“No, but after years of working with vacation clients, I know first aid.”

“Makes sense.” He lifted the towel, glad to see the bleeding was minimal. “Let’s get the bandage on now.”

Grace unwrapped the butterfly and within seconds had it secure. Blood seeped around it.

“Still needs pressure.”

Grabbing a box of gauze, she unrolled a long length and wrapped it around his palm with enough pressure to stanch any more blood flow. She tied it off, then looked up at him, a smile of victory curving her lips.

Their gazes met and held. A ripple of awareness took him by surprise. Yeah, he’d noticed how pretty his new boss was when he’d applied for the job, but this? This was a feeling he hadn’t felt in far too long. He blinked as he tried to get his wayward thoughts under control. Her smile faded and she slowly backed away.

“Um, that should do for now,” she said in a crisp tone as she packed away the supplies. “I suggest you see a doctor tomorrow.”

Thanks,” he said, striving to get his voice under control. “For everything.”

She nodded and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. He inhaled a decidedly floral scent. Cherry blossom? Even her perfume suited her.

“I should get going,” he finally said.

“Right.” Grace led him to the door. “Sorry about nearly clobbering you in the head. I thought you were a raccoon. Or worse, a burglar.”

“Serves me right for making a racket.”

She tilted her head. “You’re not very good at breaking and entering.”

He grinned and silence hovered between them again.

“I should probably go get settled,” he said again.

“Look, you don’t have to come in tomorrow,” she said, glancing down at his bandaged hand.

“It’s okay. I’d like to learn about the company and find out what kinds of tours you have scheduled.”

She nodded. “Then I’ll bring the coffee. It’s the least I can do.”

“Thanks, Miss Harper.”

“I think after tonight’s events, you can call me Grace.”

Can he teach her survival skills—

without endangering his heart?

When Sabrina Bell taps Leith Jordan for a crash course in conquering the great Alaskan outdoors, he figures he’s on safe ground. They’re polar opposites and his spectacular home state’s just a pit stop for the hotshot fashionista. So no one’s more surprised than Leith when he starts falling for her. Now he’s a man with a plan: get Sabrina to fall in love with Alaska…and, hopefully, with him.

GoodreadsAmazonB&NHarlequinKoboiBooks

Excerpt

What was she doing here, climbing a mountain, in Alaska, in the rain? Sabrina didn’t hike. She didn’t wear ugly boots and plastic ponchos. At least the old Sabrina didn’t. The new Sabrina—the one she’d pretty much created out of thin air—loved spending time outdoors. At least that was the story she’d sold Orson Outfitters’ management during her job interview, and that was the story she intended to live up to. Today’s team-builder outing was her first test.

You’d think all those hours at the gym would have prepared her for this, but it turned out running on a treadmill and hiking rough trails weren’t quite the same. Her muscles complained, forcefully. Still, she couldn’t quit, or everyone would know she was an impostor. Somehow, Sabrina continued to put one brand-new hiking boot in front of the other. Twenty minutes later, they were still trudging uphill, the rain was still coming down and everyone around her was still acting happy about it. What was with these people? Every place she’d ever worked had a resident whiner—someone who made a federal case out of running out of staples or complained about the quality of the coffee—but she hadn’t heard a peep of dissension from this crowd.

Then Clara, who was at least fifteen years older and probably thirty pounds heavier than Sabrina, broke out into a song, but she still didn’t slow down. Several others joined in. How did they have enough breath for singing and climbing? Maybe all of Sabrina’s new coworkers were animatronic robots. That would explain a lot.

GoodreadsAmazonB&NHarlequiniBooksKobo

Special Note from the Author

Dearest Readers,

Thank you for joining me in celebrating the release of THE MARINE’S RETURN, the sixth and final book in my ‘From Kenya, With Love’ series for Harlequin Heartwarming. No words can express how much I have loved writing this series, from watching the children in the first three books grow up to face their own romantic hurdles in books 4 through 6, to endearing orphaned baby elephants and other captivating wildlife, to the famous, breathtaking setting of Kenya’s Serengeti ecosystem and Masai Mara regions.

The stories in this series take on issues such as ivory poachers, loss of loved ones, selective mutism, fracking and other environmental issues, human rights and those of a country’s indigenous people, man vs nature conflicts, education for young girls/women who have little access, medical care in rural populations and the life-changing challenges our war veterans face, from PTSD to physical injuries.

The books do stand alone, although readers who have been following the series have said that, since it has a rich family saga/miniseries feel and characters from the first books play significant roles in the later stories, reading them all makes for a deeper experience. For example, Pippa Harper, who everyone meets as a spunky, adorable four-year old being raised at a remote, rustic elephant rescue camp in the Serengeti by her single-mom wildlife vet in book 1 (THE PROMISE OF RAIN), is a young adult in book 4 (EVERY SERENGETI SUNRISE), gets her own romance in book 5 (THE TWIN TEST) and even plays a role as the series comes to a close in book 6 (THE MARINE’S RETURN). We also see Haki, a childhood friend of Pippa’s in book 1, and Maddie, a ten-year-old who can’t speak in books 2 (AFTER THE SILENCE), get their hero/heroine stories in EVERY SERENGETI SUNRISE. Mac Walker, a rugged bush-pilot with an Indiana Jones air to him is seen throughout the series and gets his own adventure in THROUGH THE STORM. And we first meet the hero of THE MARINE’S RETURN, Chad Corallis, as a rambunctious, hyperactive and very cute toddler who is clearly destined to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a marine (book 2). He does just that, but his future ends up coming to a dark stop and he’s faced with a challenge he’s convinced he can’t overcome.

But, despite the seemingly impossible romantic obstacles, heart-gripping situations and, even, danger in the books, there’s always the promise of a happily ever after in a Harlequin Heartwarming romance. I hope you enjoy the series and this final story! Be sure to also check out my novella (which is linked to this series), THE SWEETHEART TREE, in the anthology A Heartwarming Thanksgiving.

Although my ‘From Kenya, With Love’ series is coming to a close, I’m embarking on a new series for Harlequin Heartwarming that will take you from rescuing elephants in Africa to saving sea turtles along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My ‘Turtleback Beach’ series is set in a fictional beach town along the more southern Hatteras Island of the Outer Banks and the first book, ALMOST A BRIDE, which involves a runaway bride and an ex-military hero in the witness protection program, releases June 1, 2019.

Many thanks to all of my readers. I wish everyone a peaceful and happy New Year!

Where do you get your ideas?

Yeah, it’s a question writers get asked all the time. I wish I had something glib and interesting and fun to say in response instead of, “The internet or the news or while walking my dog,” all which happen to be the truth. That is, until recently…

Nowadays, I love being asked where I got the idea for Sweetheart Ranch, my new series from Harlequin Heartwarming. That’s because the answer comes from a wonderfully happy occasion in my life! In early fall of 2016, I was spending hours and hours online researching nearby wedding venues. I never thought I’d get married again, but, surprise, surprise, the magic happened at a high school reunion a couple years earlier when I (re)met my now husband and, as the saying goes, sparks flew. If you had told the two of us back in sophomore Spanish class that we’d one day get married, neither of us would have believed you!

So, here I am researching wedding venues online, and I came across a charming Victorian house in a neighboring town that looked promising. Ultimately, we chose a different location for our nuptials, but I still loved that Victorian house and kept thinking about it. Being a writer of contemporary westerns, I naturally envisioned a country home rather than a Victorian house. As ideas are prone to do, that one grew into a western-themed wedding ranch complete with hayrides and honeymoon cabins. For me, there was never any other name for my imaginary place except Sweetheart Ranch. So glad my editor agreed!

The premise for A COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL is also close to my heart. My daughter was asked to officiate her good friend’s wedding at about the same time as I was researching venues. No, she’s not a minister, but it turns out getting ordained online really isn’t too difficult. Again, having that writer’s imagination, I started picturing this good looking cowboy who arrives at Sweetheart Ranch as a temporary substitute wedding officiant, his online certificate in hand. Oh, and he’s a single dad with three young children because that’s the way I rock and roll. From there, the story took off.

For the record, I wasn’t kidding when I said ideas come to me while walking my dog. Once, years ago, while I was living in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, I stared up at them one evening while walking the dog and wondered to myself if there were any wild horses still living there. That was the beginning of my Mustang Valley series which turned out to be thirteen books long. Here’s hoping Sweetheart Ranch has a similar success!

Oh, and if you have a minute, check out my free online read, A COWBOY’S THANKSGIVING REUNION, at Harlequin.com.

Warmest wishes to you and yours,

Cathy

Excerpt

“I see the way you’ve been looking at Katie-Lynn.”

“What way’s that?”

“Like you’ve still got feelings for her.”

“Dead wrong.” Cole raised his bottle for a drink to shield his expression. Travis was as sharp-eyed as a hawk, reading people and situations in an instant. A good trait for a sheriff. Not so good in a brother when you were hiding something…

“I hope so,” Travis said. “Just remember what happened after she left you.”

“Nothing happened.”

“Except you disappearing for three months.”

“I was driving cattle.”

“Sleeping out on the range, never coming home…” Cole drained the last of his dark malt and handed it to a passing waitress. “Are we done here, Sheriff?”

Travis pinned him with a steady, hard look before nodding. “You’re free to go…with a warning.”

“Which is?”

“Don’t repeat a mistake you already learned from. Anyone messes up once. Doing it twice is just plain stupid.”

Excerpt

As Dante closed the door behind him, he yanked at his tie. The conversation with Chambers set his mind in motion and the idea of being weighed down in paperwork didn’t thrill him. Would there be reams more if he made sergeant? A definite check in the con list.

He’d just settled in his chair when Eloise caught his eye. She was busy writing something on a yellow legal pad. No doubt jotting down notes on a case or for a trial. She was organized that way. Making sure to cross all her t’s and dot all her i’s. Had mad computer skills he lacked. But there was an air of uncertainty about her that he understood. It made him want to coax a smile out of her. She took everything in life so seriously, not even recognizing his teasing until they were well into a conversation. Calling her Ellie was just icing on the cake. He knew it rattled her and thought it might secretly please her.

Beneath her starched, professional persona, she possessed a determination that impressed him. He’d noticed it a few months back when they’d disagreed on a certain department policy. Most colleagues gave him wide berth. Not Ellie. She stated her reasoning, concise and to the point, and he took notice, real notice, of her for the first time.

And why that mattered, he couldn’t say. Just knew he liked her. Admired her dedication to the job. Along with her knowledge. She had a way of catching his eye and kept him looking. What else was hidden in those still waters?

Breast Cancer

Thank you so much for having me to visit!

Breast cancer has affected my life. I lost my mother to it, my friends Dottie and Inge, and others. I have friends who are fighting it now. When you read Nice to Come Home To, you won’t see their names in the dedication—that happened years ago when I wrote One More Summer—but the disease still attacks. All too often, it still wins.

But Cass Gentry, the heroine of Nice to Come Home To, is one of the survivors. At first, when I was arguing with my characters and myself about the development of the story and the people, I thought it was wrong that she would have had the illness at all. It wasn’t necessary, I insisted. Good heavens, hadn’t she had enough to deal with? What good would it do the story to add a disease that scares and angers and leaves destruction in its wake?

Well, you know, I don’t know if it added to the story or not. But it’s there. Cass is a breast cancer survivor. Like your friends and mine. It’s made her strong. It’s affected every single person who loves her. It doesn’t, after all, just happen to people who have the time or the money or the good health insurance to dedicate to it. It doesn’t draw social or economic lines. Why wouldn’t it have happened to a 30-something mystery writer who already had enough on her plate?

And that’s the way it is. I finally realized it needed to be there for that reason. It affects all of us, we worry and pray for those we love, but when we look at them—and right now I’m thinking of my friend Linda in her pretty blue cap—it’s not cancer we see. It doesn’t define them, but it is part of who they are.

I hope you enjoy Nice to Come Home To. Thank you for stopping by.

Note from the Author

Funny how the waning twilight of life shines so brightly on one’s mistakes. Nearing his eightieth birthday, family patriarch Elias Blackwell can only hope it’s not too late to rectify a few of his. Namely, his relationships with his five grandsons, Jonathon, Ethan, Ben, Tyler, and Chance. With both the operation of the Blackwell Family Ranch and the boys’ upbringing entrusted to him after the tragic death of his son and daughter-in-law, he made a mess of both. Now the boys are scattered to the winds and the family legacy is in jeopardy. Bringing his family back together is going to take every bit of the ingenuity, shrewdness, and tenacity Elias is known for. And, yes, maybe it’ll even take a bit of deception to instigate the Return of the Blackwell Brothers.

Each subsequent book in the series will release as follows:
The Rancher’s Twins by Carol Ross, Autugst 1st
The Rancher’s Rescue by Cari Lynn Webb, September 1st
The Rancher’s Redemption by Melinda Curtis, October 1st
The Rancher’s Fake Fiancée by Amy Vastine, November 1st
The Rancher’s Homecoming by Anna J. Stewart, December 1st

In book one, The Rancher’s Twins, single father and rancher Jon Blackwell needs help. His five-year-old twin girls are out of control, it’s calving season, and his grandfather is MIA. Hiring a real nanny, a professional childcare worker from an accredited agency with years of experience, turns out to be the best decision ever. Lydia is amazing. She adores the girls. The girls love her. Even as Jon wonders if she’s too good to be true, he finds himself smitten, too. What he doesn’t know is that Lydia isn’t a professional at all. She’s on the run and using the ranch to hide out. Just when Jon begins to believe that life might actually be as sweet as Lydia’s smile, her past shows up and threatens to destroy them all.

Excerpt

THAT WAS THE moment Lydia realized that she’d talked herself into a corner. She didn’t want to lie to him. Of course, she was sort of lying to him by being here as it was. But that was different. She’d had no idea that she’d fall in love—with him, his girls, the ranch, Falcon Creek. “I just kind of fell into it. All the jobs and experiences I’ve had seemed to point me in this direction. When my friend saw the position available, he encouraged me to take it.” That felt good, truthful. “And I’m so glad I did. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

“But…how is that possible?”

“What do you mean?”

“Stuck out here in the middle of nowhere taking care of someone else’s kids? This is the life you want?”

Lydia stared back at him, hoping her heart wasn’t showing in her eyes. “Um…” She turned and held her arms out in front of her. “This isn’t exactly nowhere. Pretty sure it’s the most beautiful place on earth.”

“I’m not trying to put you on the spot here, it’s just that I’m wondering why.”

In that moment, she wished she could tell him everything. But what would he think of her? There wasn’t a situation in the world that would cause Jon Blackwell to run from his problems the way she’d always run from hers. Maybe, she could tell him a little, though. Tanner’s warnings surfaced but she brushed them away. She’d keep things vague.

“Well, Jon, I’ve made some mistakes. I haven’t had great luck with relationships.” With a little grimace, she went on, “There’s no luck involved. It’s more that I get involved with the wrong guys. The last one was a real piece of work. I had a difficult time getting out of the relationship.” Gripping the rock she’d gathered, she continued, “That’s part of the reason that I took this job, to get away from him. I needed to get out of Philadelphia.”

Jon’s eyes homed in on her like a laser beam. “Lydia, did some guy…? What are you talking about? If someone hurt you, I’d like to know about it.”

Lydia’s heart fluttered helplessly in her chest. She couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel to have a man protect her for once, or at least to not want to hurt her. And not just any man, but this man, who was strong and smart and good. Too good, maybe, because he ended up with a woman who took advantage of that goodness. She ignored the little voice that reminded her that she was currently doing the same.

But she didn’t want to be. She wanted to protect him, too, from the wiles of Ava and Marilee. She wanted to help him in every way that she could—take care of his girls, support him on the ranch and keep him from working too hard. She wanted to be his partner. And love them all in the way they deserved.

“Um…he didn’t hurt me physically.” Lydia had often thought he wanted to. She suspected he’d been abusive in other relationships. “But he could be rough and the threat of more was always there. Verbal abuse, yes. I worked for him so that made it all worse.” She sighed. It was so difficult to explain without explaining. “At the end, I lived in constant fear.”

Lydia watched his mouth flatten out to a thin, angry line. “You deserve so much better.”

“Thank you. I know I want better.”

“What do you want?” His voice was low and deep and somehow made her want to cry a little.

You, her heart answered immediately. It hurt that she couldn’t say it, so she looked out at the view again. Doing her best to lighten the moment, she tossed the rock from the cliff and answered in a teasing tone, “Oh, I don’t know. Not much really. Just love, safety, security… And someday…maybe my own horse.”

Her attempt at levity didn’t work.

Jon looked out toward the horizon. He was still and appeared calm. But Lydia knew him better now. Tension radiated from him and she knew it wasn’t anger. Her breath stalled as her pulse began to pound fast and hard. His expression was pure Rancher Blackwell—grave and solemn and almost unreadable. Almost, because she could see the vulnerability there. She knew he had feelings for her, too. The attraction between them had been simmering hotly since he’d kissed her on Easter. What she hadn’t known was what those feelings entailed or how strong they were. But now she did. And at that moment, all of the reasons why they couldn’t be together flew out of her head. Which left only her heart, aching and craving his love. Just say it, she silently pleaded. Because no matter what happened long-term she wanted to hear the words at least once in her life from a person she wanted to hear them from.

He faced her again, his gray-blue gaze ensnaring hers. Her heart jumped into her throat. “What if I told you that I want those things, too? And what if I told you that I didn’t ever want to let you go, not even when the girls leave for college?”

It’s release day for Sweetheart Cove!

I like to incorporate family values into my stories and am excited to share this heartwarming summer romance novella with you.

Without the love and support we receive as children, the world can be a lonely place. Family can be blood relatives or it can be connections made by people who care and want the best for us. Either way, I truly believe love nurtures and without it we will whither.

Growing up, I didn’t always agree with everything my mom told me, but I ALWAYS knew she loved me and was doing what she thought best to protect me. We all need a parent or family member, teacher or friend we can trust with our hearts.

Excerpt

There was one he could answer right now. He reached up, pulled her hand away from his mouth and brushed a kiss across her palm. Her fingers curled in as if she wanted to capture his touch, hold it there forever. He kissed her wrist, watched her lips part, heard her soft inhale. He ran his hands over her neck, up into her hair, and tugged her forward. This time he held nothing back.

His mouth covered hers, and together they fell into the kiss. He lost himself to everything but the touch of Mia’s skin under his palms and the taste of her. The scent of the nighttime garden and the sound of the waterfall cocooned them in the moment. He wanted to settle in and never come back out.

Still, he slowed, pulled away to drop a last kiss on her lips, then her forehead before folding her into his embrace. He held her until his heart stopped racing and his breath evened out. Then he held on because he wanted to. Because she felt like she belonged right there, in his arms.

She yawned against his chest yet curled in closer against him.

He tipped her chin toward him, kissed her again. Only this time quietly and easily, as if they had all night, instead of minutes. He stopped before he was ready. Knew he’d never be ready. He cupped her cheek and said, “You need to go to bed. Get some rest.”

“What about you?” She leaned against him as they strolled back to the house.

“I’ll clean up the last bit from the dessert round and then sleep,” he said.

“I can help,” she offered.

“I’m not asking.” He guided her up the stairs into the house and motioned toward the bedrooms. “Good night, Mia.”

She turned around, held the palm he’d kissed up to her lips and smiled. “Sweet dreams, Doc.”

And then Wyatt knew. Knew that if he dared believe in the magic between them, his heart would never be the same. His life would never be the same.

MY FAVORITE ROMANCE MOVIES

Obviously, hands down my favorite would have to be ROMANCING THE STONE.  Here it is 34 years later and it’s still a classic. The story still holds up and it’s funny. The lines are classic.

And so is the story. Even though the movie has been out of print for three decades, the movie is available on Amazon on DVD. So is JEWEL OF THE NILE.

For those coming to this blog, here’s an interesting tid bit. This past Wednesday, I had my pre-interview with the producer of HALLMARK HOME and FAMILY SHOW.  Milena was terrific and we got along like old friends. Can’t ask for more than that. She asked me if there was anything in Romancing the Stone that was mine, since I’d written the book from the screenplay.

I had to tell the story about meeting Kathleen Turner when I first arrived in Los Angeles. I’d never been to LA and was in awe to begin with. There are all kinds of amazing stories that happened on that trip. Truly, I will always feel that I was guided by God and the angels every step of the way. That was a destiny trip.  On the plane, I sat across the aisle from Alex Hailey who wrote ROOTS.  I ask you what are the chances?  He and I talked for four hours!  An amazing sweet and very intelligent man. He hugged me when we got off the plane. And outside the plane, on the tarmac was a white limousine for Alex and a dark blue limousine for me.  I was on cloud 99!

I digress. So, I walked onto the sound stage at 20th Century Fox Studios and here was beautiful Kathleen sitting on a stool, a makeup person fixing her makeup. (Which she didn’t need. She was radiant).

I had an “entourage” person to introduce me to everyone…and to make sure I didn’t get into trouble, I guess.  He said, “Kathleen, this is Catherine Lanigan. The writer.”

Well, she jumped off the stool and very excitedly said, “Thank God you’re here!  First they told me you’d be here last week. Then they said it would be next week. I’m dying to talk to you. We have to have lunch.”

So on the break, we went to the commissary with Holland Taylor, who was just as or more radiant than Kathleen…this is why they call these ethereal beings, “STARS”.

Kathleen then says, “I’m having a fight with the director. He wants me to cry at the beginning of the movie and I don’t want to do it.”

Astonished, I said, “Why not?”

“Because, I don’t believe a romance writer or any writer would cry over their book.”

I said, “Goodness. I cry all the time. We have a joke in our house that there’s never a tissue, never toilet paper or paper towels because Mom is always crying over some scene she wrote.”

So, if you remember that scene when she DOES cry when she writes THE END, Joan goes around her apartment and she has no tissues, no toilet paper, no paper towel. Then blows her nose on a post a note. (Which was another question Kathleen asked. Did I use note cards?

I said, “That’s too organized. My walls are a blizzard of post a notes.”  That got in there, too.

So, yes. ROMANCING THE STONE is my favorite.  Then again, there’s CASABLANCA. GONE  WITH THE WIND—TITANIC—PEARL HARBOR-ALWAYS-MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION….

Dogwood Hill by Sherryl Woods #BookReview #Romance #ChesapeakeShores

51g3uGQi0wL

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods tests the strength of the beloved O’Briens and proves that love and family can always triumph!

When former pro football quarterback Aidan Mitchell comes to Chesapeake Shores to take a high school coaching job, he’s embraced by the town—especially the O’Briens. But Aidan has a secret that could alter all their lives.

For wounded Liz March, who’s trying for a fresh start after a devastating betrayal, taking a chance on Aidan may be more than she can handle. Her heart, however, refuses to listen to her head. But just when forever seems within reach, Aidan’s secret threatens to change everything.

Does this tempting stranger who’s made her feel alive have the power to convince her to look beyond the past and reach for the future?

Sherryl

With her roots firmly planted in the South, Sherryl Woods has written many of her more than 100 books in that distinctive setting, whether her home state of Virginia, her adopted state, Florida, or her much-adored South Carolina. She’s also especially partial to small towns wherever they may be. In Amazing Gracie, as in her later Trinity Harbor series, Woods creates a fictional version of the town where she spends summers on the shores of the Potomac River. “This town just lends itself to fascinating characters and a charming locale,” she says.

A member of Novelists Inc., Sisters in Crime and Romance Writers of America, Sherryl divides her time between her childhood summer home overlooking the Potomac River in Colonial Beach, Virginia, and her oceanfront home with its lighthouse view, in Key Biscayne, Florida. “Wherever I am, if there’s no water in sight, I get a little antsy,” she says.

Sherryl also loves hearing from readers. You can join her at her blog, http://www.justbetweenfriendsblog.com, visit her Web site at http://www.sherrylwoods.com or contact her directly at Sherryl703@gmail.com.

My Review

When pro football star Aidan Mitchell is invited to Chesapeake Shores as a prospective high school coach, he jumps at the opportunity. Not for the job, but for the chance to meet the man who fathered him.

He didn’t expect to fall in love with the town, or Liz March.

Liz is a recent transplant to Chesapeake Shores and has opened a pet supply store, which is perfect because there isn’t a stray she doesn’t want to care for. Including the new football coach, Aidan Mitchell.

Liz isn’t looking for romance though, she’s been down the marriage road and has the scars to prove it. But something about the tall, handsome Aidan has her thinking about second chances.

This is a heartwarming romance done by the queen of small town romance, Sherryl Woods. I enjoyed reconnecting with the O’Briens and their friends. It’s the author’s strong characterizations and love of traditions that keep readers coming back for more.

I give Dogwood Hill 4 lovely kisses
