It’s release day for Finding Me!
The titles for this duet—Letting Go and Finding Me—came to me after my daughter and grandson moved across the country and then continents for her schooling. She’d already been out of our home for years by the time this occurred, but it still hit me hard. I became depressed, and it’s been a long slog to overcome those feelings.
Therefore, this series is personal in a way my other books never were. I poured a lot of my loneliness and heartache into two estranged sisters who want to forgive if only they could forget the damage of the past.
It is my hope Renée and Izzy’s story will resonate, and guide you to reconciliation with loved ones you’ve let go of in your lives. Time is too short for regrets.

Izzy
My life is not like I dreamed it would be. I had the foolish fantasy of finishing high school, going to college, making something of myself- maybe even becoming famous.
Instead, I’m the infamous kid of the father who killed himself in the family’s backyard.
How’s that for a legacy?
Renée
I came home for my mother’s funeral, but I’m staying to mend bridges with my sister. We have another chance, and whatever it takes, we need to come together as a family or live the rest of our lives knowing we let our brother down.
They say pride goes before a fall, but it doesn’t tell us how to avoid the scrapes along the way.
Finding Me is a new adult romance dealing with tragedy, restitution, and love in all its aspects. The story relates to sensitive topics that may be triggering for some readers.

Izzy
I kick a loose stone on the sidewalk and watch it roll into the gutter, my shadow marking time as I walk past the Willoughby’s store and wave at Helen through the window. Renée can buy her own damn salad if she wants one. She had no right to give Ben permission to break his grounding, especially after I expressly told him no. What kind of message does that send to a belligerent teen already pushing boundaries to see how far he can go?
She makes me crazy. It’s been that way our whole lives. Renée’s way is to act all kind and caring while she methodically shoves the shiv into your spine. I’ve seen her in action too many times to be taken in by her crap, which makes me wonder how I got myself tangled up in her new crusade—saving our family one good deed at a time.
Geez, cynical much?
I’m becoming my father. The negativity is a viscous sludge inside of me, weighing my thoughts and actions in its mire. I’ve tried to fight my way out, to be a beacon of light for my brother, but everything I say comes out wrong and I know he resents the power I weld over his life. I want to talk to someone about it, but who? Jay and I aren’t exactly on speaking terms—my fault—and Renée… well, I’ve already seen her parenting skills in action. The guidance counselor, Mrs. Bains, told me to call if I had any questions but I don’t want to give the court liaison any more ammunition.
The traffic is sparse in this quiet neighborhood on the edge of town. A neglected park across the street has a faded yellow slide and swing set. On impulse, I step off the curb, get honked at by a passing motorist, and then cross to the metal gate hanging open on rusty hinges. A prickly rose hedge winds up through a chain link fence, each holding the other up like a drunk couple. There’s nobody in the playground at the moment, but an old basketball lies beneath a damaged and torn hoop, abandoned.
The swing’s wooden plank seat is warped but comfortable, the chains cool under my fingers as I push backward, my sneakered toes digging for purchase in the hollowed, damp sand. I let go, and my heart leaps as I soar into a powder blue sky, hovering for an infinitesimal moment, then dropping to earth, my hair flying out around my head with a life of its own. When was the last time I felt young and carefree? I can’t even remember anymore. I’m only nineteen; I should be planning my future, going to college, and dating frat guys. I shove off harder, my knees a piston diverting the angst inside of me to the ground below. The sky swings in a crazy arc overhead, and the urge to let go of the chains grows.
It’s tough not to hurt for this family; they’ve been through so much. That’s the thing about life, though; it’s not meant to be easy. And isn’t love worth the battle?

Congratulations!! I’ve been waiting for this book. I know how you feel about being far from family, especially a daughter. In my case, it was my decision to move away, but it doesn’t make it any easier. But it doesn’t matter the miles, the love is always there.

Thanks, Darlene. Ibthink I’m what’s known as a helicopter mom, lol. I don’t want to be left out of their life choices 🙂

Actually if you were a helicopter mom she would not have moved away. You gave her wings, the confidence to make her own decisions and follow her dreams. But like most moms, we instinctively want them close. 💖💖
