My absolute favorite thing is when a writer manages to bring the characters to blazing life on the page. Julie does that in spades with Hell or High Water.

This book is filled with beautifully done imagery and not-soon-to-be-forgotten lines from a cast of hard as nails ex-Navy SEAL’s. One of my favorites was from Leo the Lion Anderson:

“I know I’m a bad person.” And that had her gaze snapping up to search his face. “I think you have to have a bit of bad in you to do what we do. But we’re bad people workin’ on the good side. And that makes it okay. Because the bad people workin’ on the good side are the only things standin’ between the good people and the bad people who are workin’ on the bad side. Every lie I’ve ever told, every life I’ve ever taken was in the name of keepin’ innocents safe. And that’s what lets me sleep at night.”

Dialogue such as the piece above kept this story fresh and enjoyable for me. I caught myself reading with a smile on my lips more than once. You can’t ask for better than that. 🙂

If I had to give anything negative at all, it was the amount of sex scenes in the book. I ended up skipping over a lot of it to get to the good stuff. If you’re looking for a great read full of fresh phrases and hard to forget characters, this one’s for you.
