When Tucker and Libby go looking for happiness in The Happiness Pact, they find it in unexpected places, such as helping a calf be born in a barn during a blizzard.

Although that wouldn’t be my first choice for how to spend a romantic evening, I do have a soft spot for the unexpected. For instance, I grew up on a small farm in the middle of the cornfields of Central Indiana. All I wanted was to move to a city and write books. Marriage and kids? Yeah, eventually, but no hurry.

Well. I moved exactly five miles from the house where I grew up. Still in the cornfields. The marriage and kids I wasn’t in a hurry for? The third and final child was born when I was 23, and Duane and I are talking about how we’re going to spend our 47^th anniversary come May.

It’s been a grand adventure—I’m so glad I didn’t get what I intended or expected.
