Boneseeker
(The Boneseeker Chronicles #1)
by Brynn Chapman
Romantic Suspense
Paperback & ebook, 213 pages
January 10th 2018 by The Wild Rose Press, Inc.

Aspiring scientist Arabella Holmes doesn’t fit the role of a 1900s lady. Her father, Sherlock, landed her a position at the Mütter Museum to pursue her dream of becoming a purveyor of abnormal science, or what her father calls a “Boneseeker.”

Henry Watson’s two-fold mission at the Mütter Museum is to join their team of forensic anthropologists in unearthing unusual antiquities and to watch over Arabella. If only he could get her to speak to him, instead of hurling knives in his general direction. Assigned to a most secret expedition to investigate a mysterious skeletal hand discovered in upstate New York, Arabella and Henry are soon caught in a scientific debate, and the search for the truth may have deadly consequences for those involved.

Are the bones from a Neanderthal? Or are they living proof of fallen angels known as Nephilim?

Watson and Holmes must put aside their differences, trust their instincts, and rely on one another to survive to uncover the truth.

Holmes and Watson, Like Father, like son…and daughter

For the record, I have, to date, read 90 percent of the Sherlock Holmes canon—and his predecessors, Wilkie Collins et al.

The new Sherlock Holmes characters in the recent films, however, ignited a fire in my brain.  The following is from my author’s notes in the Book, BONESEEKER

John Watson

If one has read the original Sherlock Holmes stories, one quickly realizes Watson was not the bumbling, plump counterpart portrayed in many films. Indeed, Watson was an ex-solider, a crack shot, an excellent physician and surgeon, and able to deduce minor mysteries on his own. I stand by the screenwriter’s version of the American film remakes, which portray him as a necessary catalyst for Holmes to interact with society, and while not the genius-deductive mastermind of Holmes, a force to be reckoned with in his own right.

Holmes and Asperger’s

I also contend that Sherlock Holmes had Asperger’s Syndrome. One familiar with this genetic phenotype could quickly recognize his difficulty relating to people, his extreme, all-consuming passions, and obsessive behavior and routines.

Holmes and Watson’s relationship was symbiotic, which is consequently the case with many with Asperger’s, despite their oft-great talents, they often rely on a loved one to assist them with deciphering societal cues and navigating the world of relationships.

Precisely like Watson and Holmes.

Case closed.

So rather than seeing John Watson as a bumbling straight man to Holmes, I rather see him as such.

And from this relationship—their children were born. How wonderful to imagine the horror of both, when their children fall in love, despite their most valiant efforts to sabotage the attraction.

Here is an excerpt of Henry, arguing with his father over the very subject. Like father, like son.

Henry’s cottage

Henry

I glance out the window at the dimming light, fading to pink streaks on the horizon.

It’s almost dark; we’re almost late for the fund-raising ball.

I stride to my chest of drawers and whip out a tie.

“Father, I thought we agreed I’d meet Priscilla, not pledge my immediate, undying love on first sight.” I rip the black tie off and begin again, eyeing him in the mirror.

One dark eyebrow arches. “Really, Henry? Pray tell, what is not to like? She is utterly gorgeous and well-connected to the museum. She is the perfect prospect.”

“You court her, then.” I wrestle with my tie, roughly slipping the knot up to my neck. I sigh, and spin to face him. “What’re you up to, then? The truth?”

Father’s chest and eyebrows rise simultaneously as he sucks in a breath and then exhales dramatically between his gritted teeth. “You are…”

“Difficult?”

“Yes, but not relevant to this part of the conversation.”

“Brilliant?” I interject.

He half-smiles, as he does when I infuriate him. “Yes, also not relevant. Might I find my own word?”

I turn back to the mirror. “I’m growing old waiting for it.”

“Unsettled. Unfocused. A rogue. Have too many interests—”

“I’m nothing like James, you mean.”

His eyes flare at the mention of my older brother. “I said nothing of the sort, Henry.”

“But you were thinking it.”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“And so marrying would cure me of my many shortcomings?” I turn back to him and give my lapels a rough tug to busy my hands. So I don’t poke him in the chest.

“The right woman, yes.”

“And Priscilla is that woman?”

He bends, picking up his hat and cane. “You’ve only just met her, give the girl a bloody chance. Henry—” He stops dead, revelation lighting his features. “You’ve already someone in mind, don’t you?”

I will my hands to stay still.

His gaze immediately snaps down. “Your hands are limp as dead fish. That is as much a giveaway as if they were fidgeting.”

“You are impossible.” I give up and permit my fingers free rein and crack my knuckles.

“Likewise.” Father’s lips purse as he considers. Comprehension and horror dawn as his mouth twitches beneath the mustache. He jams his eyes shut, shaking his head once. “Not Arabella? I thought we were past all that.”

They fly open, waiting.

I shrug, and slide my hands over my already slicked hair. I walk toward the door.

Escape. Flee. Freedom.

“For the love of all that’s holy, Henry. That’s almost like being married to Holmes.” He gives a little shudder.

“I daresay you’re one to talk. For years, you chose a life with Holmes over matrimony, so that argument is full of holes. Do as I say, not as I do?”

Father’s face softens, and he lifts a placating hand. “I love Arabella too, you know that. But, be reasonable. She doesn’t fit into polite society.”

“Neither does Holmes and he’s almost legendary now.”

“She is unruly, headstrong, and will never, ever listen.”

“I know. She fascinates me.”

He thrusts both his hands palm-up into the air, then quickly covers his mouth in a prayer pose.

I capitalize on his frustration to make my escape, walking swiftly to the door. “We are going to be late for the gathering. Don’t want to keep your pet, Priscilla, waiting. Really, Father, Violet might be jealous at your obvious attachment.”

“Love is too young to know what conscience is…”

It’s a game from my childhood, started by my mother. A perpetual contest between James and me—the most Shakespearean quotes meant the most sweets. His stare burns a hole in my back. I whirl, and glare back and grind my teeth. I always won. “Let every eye negotiate for itself, and trust no agent.”

Father’s mouth pops open. I shut the door before he closes it.

“I’m a pirate, lass. What am I supposed to think when I come into my room and a lass has made herself at home, going so far as to take off her boots?”

She pushed against him more, and he did let go slightly, enough that she thought she might be able to draw a better breath, but it didn’t appear that his hold was what kept her from breathing. Struggling to speak without choking, she said, “I came here because I heard ye were looking for the bastard of Santiago Fernandez.”

“And ye claim to be that unfortunate offspring?”

She nodded solemnly. “I do.”

“Prove it,” he growled.

“How?” She wriggled against him. “Put me down first.”

“Say something to me in Spanish.”

He settled her in front of him, but not far enough away that she couldn’t still feel the heat of his body sinking into hers. Thinking quickly on her feet, Alesia frowned up at him. “My mother was Scots, and my father, the legendary Spanish pirate, abandoned me the moment he planted his seed, ye buffoon. Where would I have learned his language?”

“Point taken.” He studied her face, eyes narrowed. “Ye do have the look of him. In a feminine sort of way. Save for that hair. Tempestuous hair.”

Her mouth fell open at the insult. She moved to stomp on his foot but quickly found herself lifted off her feet, arms pinned to her sides by the steely strength of his own.

Fine, he wanted to play dirty. She’d already showed him once she knew how to take down a man. Alesia moved to kick him where she’d had the pleasure of socking him before, but Captain Thor clamped her legs between his thighs of steel.

“Uh-uh, princess,” he mocked.

Though she hated to head-butt anyone for the headache it always gave her, that was her next move. Alesia was fairly certain at this point she wasn’t going to be walking away with the silver, which meant she could at least walk away with her life—and figure out another way to escape the wharf.

Before she had the chance to make good on her decision to crack her head against his, she found herself flattened to the wood-planked floor, and his massive body on top of hers. Every hard plane pressed to the soft curves of her own. She sucked in a ragged breath, prepared to shout at him to leave off, but she found her throat too tight to speak.

“I’d have expected more from Santiago’s daughter, wee sprite.” His finger trailed over her cheek and along her jawline.

Alesia bared her teeth, trying to wriggle free but only managing to feel his body pressed harder to hers. “And I would have expected more from a pirate Captain.”

“Touché.” His grin was inviting. Unnerving. Disarming.

“Get off me,” she growled, trying keep her mind in the right place—the angry place. That was survival. To succumb to his disarmament was to lose.

His gaze shifted to her lips. “Not without a kiss.”

Alesia snorted and shoved at his unmoving shoulders. “I’d not kiss ye if ye were the last man on earth.”

“What if I were the second to last?” he teased.

She let out an exasperated groan. “Not then, either, ye ogre.”

He clucked his tongue. “Shame.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because, lass, if sparring with ye is this fun, kissing would be even better.”

Excerpt

“Bet Amberley and Harley can jump over the rail!” one of the children in the equine therapy group hollered.

“I want to see that!” another yelled.

“Please, Amberley!” the kids pleaded.

“Sorry, boys and girls,” she heard Jared say before she could speak. “But—”

“I’ll do it!” The rail had to be on the lowest setting, six inches above the ground. No challenge at all. She could do it blindfolded.

Or legally blind.

Amberley set her jaw, wheeled Harley away and brought him into a trot that carried her swiftly to the blurred shape of the gate. She couldn’t quite judge the height, or her proximity, just yet. Unease fluttered in her belly. How many paces to it? Time to jump?

Relying on instinct, she squeezed Harley’s sides at the right moment, but he balked. She flew over his head and landed flat on her back. At the children’s cries, she struggled to sit up, but the fall had knocked the wind out of her.

Calloused hands cupped her face.

“Amberley!” Jared’s baritone sounded urgent and anxious. “Say something.”

“Something,” she croaked.

“Still got her humor,” she heard Maverick drawl from a distance. “Need a hand up?”

“I’ve got her,” Jared insisted, possessive.

“I’ve got it.” She heaved herself into a sitting position, furious with herself, with Jared’s hovering, with everything.

Angry tears pricked the backs of her eyes. She had to leave before she embarrassed herself more. “Where’s Harley?”

“Here!” Maverick brought her horse close.

“Is Amberley alright?” one of the kids whimpered.

Harley dipped his head, sniffing her.

“It’s okay, boy,” she whispered, then gripped his bridle and pushed to her feet. The world tilted and spun, and she locked her knees to keep them from buckling. She would not scare the little ones. “I’m just fine. Y’all go ahead with the fun and I’ll see you soon.”

With that, she led Harley to the gate, one hand trailing along the ring’s fence top for guidance.

After pushing the automatic opener, she marched out into the empty space, squinted for the stable’s brown, rectangular shape, and more or less followed Harley.

She needed to do this on her own.

If someone rescued her, that person owned her. Not because she’d owe them—she could always find a way to repay a favor. They owned her because she’d stop being the lead in her story anymore. She’d become the poor struggling loser/helpless damsel who was saved from danger/dishonor/humiliation by the brilliant, brave, compassionate hero, and he got to decide which, because she wouldn’t be the one running this story, not anymore.

Once inside, she collapsed into the soft hay and buried her face in her hands.

“Cowgirl up,” she whispered to herself.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • J. R. Ward returns with an all-new tale of paranormal passion in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood continues to train the best of the best to join them in the deadly battle against the Lessening Society. Among the new recruits, Axe proves to be a cunning and vicious fighter—and also a loner isolated because of personal tragedy. When an aristocratic female needs a bodyguard, Axe takes the job, though he’s unprepared for the animal attraction that flares between him and the one he is sworn to protect.

For Elise, who lost her first cousin to a grisly murder, Axe’s dangerous appeal is enticing—and possibly a distraction from her grief. But as they delve deeper into her cousin’s death, and their physical connection grows into so much more, Axe fears that the secrets he keeps and his tortured conscience will tear them apart.

Rhage, the Brother with the biggest heart, knows all about self-punishing, and he wants to help Axe reach his full potential. But when an unexpected arrival threatens Rhage and Mary’s new family, he finds himself back in the trenches again, fighting against a destiny that will destroy all he holds most dear.

As Axe’s past becomes known, and fate seems to be turning against Rhage, both males must reach deep—and pray that love, rather than anger, will be their lantern in the darkness.

My Review

O.M.G.!!

Every time I open a new BDB (Black Dagger Brotherhood) book I think that it can’t get any better than the last one, and EVERY TIME I’m proven wrong!

This book has so many layers, as do all the books within the series. This is so much more than your average vampire romance. There’s a life and death war with the lessers, ongoing clashes between the upper echelon in the vampire society and those not born with a silver spoon, and training for the recruits- the civilization’s last hope.

Rhage and Mary are faced with an impossible decision that could rip their new-found family apart, and the stress is felt throughout the King’s household.

Recruit, Axe, is a loner and that’s just how he likes it. Caring means pain, and he wants nothing to do with that monster, but a job opportunity changes everything when he falls for the very woman he’s been hired to protect.

Secrets threaten the connection he’s made with the beautiful Elise and when a near-death experience brings everything to a head, he realizes too late, how much he could lose.

Warning: This is NOT a book you can set down!

Series Blurb:

Northstar Security Firm is an elite private security agency whose mission statement: GUIDED BY THE TRUTH, is the guiding principle to provide justice for those who have been wronged. Founded by former CIA agents Byron O’Neal, Katherine O’Neal, and Sean Malone, Northstar Security has a ninety-nine percent success rate. That one percent is a still open case involving Katherine’s murder and Sean Malone’s career-ending gunshot wound. Nothing is a hundred percent guaranteed, and angst over one unsolved case doesn’t stop good men and women from fulfilling their duty.
Proving Ground

Northstar Security Series Book #1

About the Book:

A screw-up, a wild fire, and a bio-terrorist. What could go wrong?
Proving Ground introduces the high stakes world of The Northstar Security Firm. Caitlin Malone’s only hope of saving her town, maybe even the entire country, is pinned on the one man who broke her heart.

Screw-ups don’t get second chances. That’s what Caitlin Malone believes when she returns to Oregon after failing her first Northstar Security assignment. When she inadvertently stumbles across a plot to steal deadly pathogens from the bio-lab near her hometown, she sees a chance at redemption.

USDA Forest Ranger, John ‘Mac’ MacAlistair, doesn’t want to babysit the motorcycle club holding their annual rally in his national forest. To make matters worse, Caitlin is attending the rally with Mac’s estranged uncle. Having her home again brings up feelings that are better left buried.

It’s early September. Any spark will send the dry timber into a raging fire. The terrorists are counting on that distraction to work in their favor. When Caitlin is trapped by the wildfire, her only hope of rescue is pinned on Mac, the man she’s tried two years to forget. Before they can share their feelings, Mac and Caitlin must first escape the burning forest and stop the terrorists from releasing the deadly pathogens.

Excerpt:
…he couldn’t reach the knife. Although handy in most situations, it would be useless against a gun. His only chance of coming out unscathed in this encounter would be quick reflexes and luck. Mostly luck.
Breathing slowly, he cleared his mind, took a cautious step forward—and froze when he heard the click of the gun’s safety release.
The time it took to consider alternatives should’ve been spent backing out the door. However, in his nearly thirty years, he’d only run away from one situation, which, although dangerous to his emotional well-being, hadn’t been life threatening. He wasn’t backing down now.
The gun didn’t waver. The person behind it remained shadowed, but steady hands indicated someone other than a fly-by-night burglar. Had one of Sean’s old nemeses come after him for some long overdue retribution?
“I don’t know who you are.” Mac kept his voice calm, soothing. “But I’m pretty sure I’m not the person you want to shoot.”
The snick of a switch and a blaze of overhead light prevented more talk. Blinded by the sudden brightness, Mac stood rooted to the floor, hands in the air, not daring to make any sudden moves.
“Damn it, Mac, I could’ve killed you!”
Caitlin Malone.
Mac’s heart stirred to life. Blood surged through his veins as his breath released on a whoosh. He lowered his hands, but his body refused to budge. His reaction had nothing to do with the fact Caitlin had greeted him with a shotgun, and everything to do with the woman herself.

Dead Reckoning

Touch of Red by Laura Griffin #BookReview #Suspense @Laura_Griff

518WqCUoLgL

New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin “delivers the goods” (Publishers Weekly) again with this gripping, “spellbinding” (Fresh Fiction) thriller full of twists and turns—the twelfth in her bestselling Tracers series.

When crime scene investigator Brooke Porter arrives at the home of a murdered woman, the only thing more shocking than the carnage is the evidence that someone escaped the scene. But where is this witness now? A thorough search of the area yields more questions than answers, and before Brooke even packs up her evidence kit, she’s made it her goal to find the witness and get them out of harm’s way.

Homicide detective Sean Byrne has seen his share of bloody crime scenes, but this one is particularly disturbing, especially because Brooke Porter is smack in the middle of it. Sean has had his eye on the sexy CSI for months, and he’s determined to help her with her current case—even if it means putting his attraction on hold so he and Brooke can track down a murderer. But as the investigation—and their relationship—heats up, Sean realizes that keeping his work and his personal life separate is more complicated than he ever imagined; especially when the killer sets his sights on Brooke.

With Griffin’s signature “fully fleshed characters, dry humor, and tight plotting” (Publishers Weekly), Touch of Red demonstrates why she is one of the most acclaimed and popular authors of sexy thrillers today.

Laura Griffin is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than twenty books. My Review

This book opens with a horrifying murder that left me with chills and the urge to check my locks!

CSI Brooke Porter discovers disturbing evidence that a child may have witnessed the killer and could now be in grave danger. She presses the detective in charge of the case, Sean Byrne, to find the child before it’s too late.

Sean is under pressure to solve the murder and find their key witness, a child, before the killer strikes again. And his job isn’t made easier when the sexy crime scene investigator he’s been attracted to for months gets in the way of his investigation.

Sean and Brooke must race against time to stop a killer intent on erasing his tracks before someone else dies.

This is a fast-paced read I found impossible to put down! The Tracer series is set around the Delphi Centre, a top-notch forensics lab. Each book can easily be read as a standalone, but once you read one you’ll want to buy them all!

I give Touch of Red 5+ lovely kisses- A must read!

I have to make the pain stop.

I want to feel alive, and I do when I’m drinking and partying the way I should have when I was a teen. Instead, back then, I was preparing to become the Whiskey Princess, a role assigned to me from birth.

A lady never drinks to the point of blacking out, nor does she go home with men she meets in bars. But I went home with him…Jackson.

He was more than just a one-night stand, but I learned that a wee bit late and he was gone. Or so I thought.

For when I return home, Jackson is there, and he finds out very quickly who I am.

Problem is, I’m not sure that I’ve ever known who I really am.

***

I can tell by looking into her blue depths that she’s absolute trouble, but I have to have her. It’s only for one night. Some fun, and I’ll be on my way. My time here is done, and I’m ready to move on to my next adventure.

What I don’t realize at the time is that she is my next adventure.

Lena excites me. She blows my mind. And her brogue? It has me in knots. I don’t even care about the rumors that surround her.

She’s hurting. I want to help her, but then my time is up.

Can I leave her?

I have to leave. I have no choice.

But I love her.

Contemporary Romance

If anyone can save him, she’s the one

Jerrod Walters hopes relocating to the coastal town of Two Moon Bay can be the fresh start he and his young daughter need. But the single dad is caught off guard when a beautiful PR professional offers to promote his diving excursions to legendary shipwreck sites. There’s so much he admires about Dawn Larson, starting with the woman’s upbeat, can-do personality. Dawn’s boundless capacity for joy might be the only thing capable of bringing him back to life after his tragic loss…

GoodreadsAmazonB&NHarlequiniBooksKoboGooglePlay

Excerpt

[Dawn and Jerrod are getting to know each other during a day of tourist magazine interviews Dawn has arranged. She also takes Jerrod to see a lookout hidden in the bluffs that he recognizes is different from what he’s called the unpretentious natural beauty of the area. It leads to thoughts of the idea of home.]

As they climbed into the car, Dawn said, “Now that the sun’s out, there’s something I’d like to show you. It won’t take long to get there, maybe twenty minutes. Are you up for a side trip?”

“Lead the way,” Jerrod said, wondering where she got all her energy. After four appointments, she was as fresh as when they’d started their trip up the peninsula earlier that day. He used to be like that himself, he mused. It came from enjoying his work the same way he could see Dawn enjoyed hers. But her energy also rose from a clear conscience, a lack of burden. That’s how he read Dawn. He’d once thought self-blame was a permanent part of him. Now he wondered if could let that piece of himself off the hook. He hadn’t even considered it before. Only as he settled into life in Two Moon Bay had he thought it possible.

He followed her directions onto the main highway and then the state road in the next town north. She directed him down an unpaved road full of bumps and ruts that slowed his speed to less than twenty miles an hour. He began to regret saying yes to this extra jaunt. “This place better be good,” he teased.

“This is the worst of it,” she said, “but the reward is at hand.” She pointed ahead to a parking area. “This is actually a county park, but it’s the lookout that draws people from everywhere. These bluffs are the highest point in the area, so we get a beautiful panoramic view of the lake and the small islands around the peninsula.”

They were alone in the park on that weekday and under a now clear blue sky.

“Follow me.” She led the way down steep and winding wooden stairs to a platform and fence that offered a view of the lake from a point higher than he’d seen before. The fresh breeze created an even pattern of whitecaps broken up only by the wooded islands. “This is the reward for going down that awful road.” She encompassed the view with an exaggerated sweep of her arm. “It seems a shame to come this far and not go this one leg more.”

He stood still and took it all in. The fishy scent carried on the breeze, the sound of the waves slapping the rocky boulders below, the spray flying high into the air. He’d trekked to the panoramic views of oceans and lakes, waterfalls and rivers. They almost always left him awestruck, even overwhelmed. For reasons Jerrod couldn’t explain, he found this view both majestic and oddly comforting. “There’s nothing unpretentious about this view.”

“Ha! That’s so funny. I’ve never heard anyone describe it quite like that, but you’re right. It’s more dramatic than most of our landscape. I think of this part of the state as a showpiece of gentle beauty. Two Moon Bay is one of the best of its gems.” She tilted her head back and inhaled deeply. “I can’t get enough of that lake smell.”

Dawn was so much more than to-do lists and that satchel she called a handbag she hauled around. “You really love it here, don’t you?”

“I do.” She shrugged. “I love to travel, but I always want to come back to this neck of the woods. It’s home.”

He thought about home, and what that meant for him. He didn’t know anymore. But being around Dawn made him ask questions he hadn’t allowed himself to think about for the past couple of years.

“I suppose for you, Key West is home?”

She phrased that as a question, so she probably expected an answer. He searched for one, but finally said, “I don’t know if that’s true anymore.”

Many years have passed since Bernadette Bellamy fled the Cariboo Gold Rush and her reputation as the sister of a French-Canadian gang of thieves. A wanted woman’s flight, a man in pursuit of honesty, not stolen gold…and only nine days left to save the town.

My Review

I can only imagine the mix of fear and excitement mail-order brides felt as they traveled across the country in search of a new life.

Ms. Nelson does a fantastic job painting settings in a readers mind so that you feel as though your right there with the characters!

Jack Peregrine lost his father and his leg in the same horrible accident, and not long afterward his wife disappears leaving him broken and lonely. His only refuge is his work as a trader and caring for a grandfather who becomes more forgetful by the day. Desperate to save his town and to find companionship he agrees to send away for a mail-order bride.

Birdie Bell has secrets. If anyone finds out who she really is, she’ll go to jail. Desperate to escape to a place where she can become a new person, she agrees to travel to Noelle as a mail-order bride.

Can these two lost and lonely people cast aside their past to face a brave new future- together?

This was a heartwarming story of love against all odds.

I give The Calling Birds: The Fourth Day 5 lovely kisses!
