What if saving little angels meant becoming the monster?

When Special Agent Nick McFarlane receives news that his partner of eight years is in trouble, he doesn’t hesitate. Throwing himself into a deep cover operation to expose and shut down The Micahs, a child trafficking ring, Nick enters, unprepared for the reality that awaits.

Special Agent Meredith Richards took the assignment fully aware of the consequences. Leaving her life behind, she knew she wouldn’t be able to get out with her life until she shut the Micahs down for good.

When Meredith’s informant is murdered and her contact inside the organization starts to lose control, Meredith is forced to make choices she can’t take back. On the edge of sacrificing herself, her principles, and her life, she begins to wonder if she will survive the case, or if she even wants to.

They made sandwiches and iced tea and took their lunch out onto the porch.

“It’s quiet here,” Meredith said, taking a bite of her sandwich.

“Too quiet, I miss the buzz of the city,” Nick replied, taking a sip of his tea.

“Yeah, but don’t you ever want to get away from the buzz, Nick?”

“That’s what the beach house is for,” he replied with a full mouth and a smile.

“Ah, yes the beach house,” she replied. “So how was your vacation?”

“It was good, the family had a good time,” he replied, finishing his sandwich and wiping his hands.

“I’m glad, you deserved it,” she said. She picked up her tea and took a sip.

“Meredith, it’s okay,” he said. “You did what you had to do. I understand.”

She didn’t say anything in response, just finished the last of her sandwich and drank down the remainder of her tea. Nick grabbed her glass and plate, going into the house.

Meredith lay back, leaning on her hands, looking up at the sky. It was covered with clouds, only a few pockets of blue shining through. The sun, although invisible, was still hot, and the air was thick and moist. She heard the door open, and Nick walked down the stairs and turned to face her.

“What?” she asked at his expectant look.

“Are you ready?”

“For what?”

“For the walk,” he asked.

“You were serious about that?” She asked, he smiled and tilted his head. “It’s gonna rain.”

“So?” He replied. “Just means there will be more hot water for you when we get back.”

“Nice,” she replied with a laugh, as he held out his arms, asking her to join him. “Fine.” She moved up to join him and they began their trek through the jungle. “So how did you find this place, anyway?” She asked him as they crunched through the brush.

“I called in a favor,” he replied, pushing foliage out of their way.

“That was some favor—got any leads into the NSA?”

“Not yet,” he said with a laugh.

“Yeah well, I doubt we’re going to make any friends anytime soon,” she replied as she pushed away a stray branch and stopped. “Nick, what are we doing out here?”

“Walking,” he replied, looking upward into the trees above them.

“Nick…” Meredith stared at him and then looked above, seeing the dense foliage. It was beautiful and overwhelming in the same moment. He was watching her, and she suddenly felt self-conscious.

“I missed you,” he said.

“I missed you, too,” she replied. “I regretted not telling you from the moment I left. I’m not… It’s not the same without you.”

“Forbes was about to fire me when…” he started and then saw Talia’s face in his mind. “When we found Talia. There were a few hours where we thought…”

“I… I didn’t know,” she stepped toward him.

“I know you didn’t,” he replied with a reassuring smile. “It was one thing when you left, but when I saw her and I thought it was you…”

“Nick,” Meredith said. Nick pulled her close, kissing her tenderly. Meredith fell into the embrace, pulling him closer with her good arm, matching his fervor with her own.

She felt drops of water hitting her hair and they looked up. As if on cue, the sky opened and released its wealth of rain. Nick took her hand, retracing their steps through the jungle, the rain chasing them all the way back to the house. They reached the porch, looking back at the torrential downpour just feet away.

“We’re in this together, no matter what, Mere, ” Nick said before pulling her back into his embrace.

“Together,” Meredith replied, standing on her toes, kissing him again.

Nick reached the door, opening it for her. She walked into the house and he followed. Meredith made her way to the bathroom and grabbed a couple of towels. Returning to the living room, she found him by the fireplace and tossed him a towel.

“Thanks,” he said. She watched him peel off his shirt, forcing her to look away.

“I’m going to jump in the shower,” she said. He began drying himself with the towel. She quickly turned and headed for the bathroom.

“Leave me some hot water!” Nick called.

She laughed to herself and then entered the bathroom, closing the door. Peeling her clothes from her body, she blushed as the image of his bare chest came back to her. It wasn’t as if she’d never seen him without his shirt off before. Christ, she’d seen more of him than she probably should’ve, but this was very different.

This was… and after that kiss—well, she needed a shower.

She thought about what he’d said in the jungle, about how sincere and honest he was being. Nick McFarlane was trying to express his feelings. and she was stunned. She silently wondered what would happen next, asking herself what she wanted to happen next. Pushing the absurdity of it out of her mind, she quickly finished her shower and realized she didn’t have any dry clothes to change into. Drying off as best she could, she wrapped herself in the towel and stepped out of the bathroom. Before she took another step, she saw a stack of clothing sitting on a chair beside the door.

She smiled, grabbed them, and returned to the bathroom. Sweatpants, a t-shirt, underwear and socks. She started to dress and stopped. Drying her hair with the towel, she put on the shirt and opened the door.

“Did you leave me some hot water?” Nick asked, waiting in the hallway.

“Maybe?” she replied, watching his eyes travel to her bare legs.

“Guess we should give the water heater some time to fill,” Nick said. Meredith moved, reaching for him. Hooking her arm around his neck, she pulled him down into a heated kiss. Nick responded, devouring her mouth like his last meal. Flashes of Devon pulled her back, and she trembled uncontrollably. Nick hesitated.

“I’m…I’m sorry,” she whispered, then stepped back and looked away.

“Meredith, no…” he said.

“Nick, I…” Meredith said, wringing her hands, tears ebbing her eyes.

“Stop. I want this,” Nick said. Touching her cheek, he took her hand, resting the palm on his chest. “I’ve always wanted this.” Meredith smiled and Nick swept her into his arms, carrying her into the bedroom, laying her down. “We can wait, Mere. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Shut up and make love to me, McFarlane,” Meredith said.
