Oh No! I’m back. I am surrounded by inky black nothingness. The air is musty…damp, my nostrils fill with the smell of dank basement. Like in a haunted house, filled with saws and chains and bloody hooks, this is the perfect place for any psycho to hide his tools of the crazy trade. I’m trembling, from the all-encompassing fear, eating at every cell in my body.Where am I? My fingers search out for clues. Beneath me is a thin mattress on a hard surface. My head rests on a concrete-like pillow. My breathing escalates as the panic rises in my chest. I open my mouth to scream, but only a muted croak escapes. Over the thunder of my pounding heart, I hear a booming crack, a gunshot. I recognize the sound from a trip to the range with Jake years earlier.

I swing my legs over the side of my perch, thinking in my blind panic to run even though I cannot see. I can’t ignore this intense urge to flee. But my impulse is thwarted by an unknown restraint trapping my left arm, a rope? Panic has me in its grip. I gasp for air to fill my lungs but produce only whimpers and muted pleas.

A loud screech reverberates through the darkness. Rats? Oh, please, no rats! Could this get any worse? Hysterical, I yank relentlessly on the rope tethering me. With each tug, the line cuts deeper into my skin. My arm warms as blood seeps from the gouges, coating my hand and fingers. Behind me, the pounding sound of footsteps startles me. Before I can turn to confront my visitor, I feel the rush of air preceding the impact to the back of my head. A blaze of bright stars then, a different blackness envelopes me.

Lisa Burton

Hi, all, and welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. This week is a special edition, because it’s geared to all you authors out there. It might give some good ideas to bloggers who want to host guests too.

Today, I’ve collected a group of power bloggers who host authors on their sites. This gives an author a way to reach a larger audience than they might if they were simply posting about date-night or something. This means when you have a new book to promote, or maybe to give an older title a secondary push.

We’re going to start by addressing the three-hundred-pound gorilla in the room, and I mean that literally. Chris The Storyreading Ape, hosts one of the largest author blogs around. “Did you get my fruit basket, Chris?”

“Yes I did thanks, Lisa – very thoughtful of you to use edible leaves to weave the…

Fatal Invasion, Fatal Series Book 12
By Marie Force
Chapter 1

“This is a classic case of be careful what you wish for.” Nick placed a stack of folded dress shirts in a suitcase that already held socks, underwear, workout clothes and several pairs of jeans. Only Nick would start packing seven days before his scheduled departure for Europe next Sunday, the day after Freddie and Elin’s wedding. “That’s the lesson learned here.”

“Only anal-retentive freakazoids pack a week before a trip.” Sam sat at the foot of the bed and watched him pack with a growing sense of dread. “Three freaking weeks. The last time you were gone that long, I nearly lost my mind, and I don’t have much of a mind left to lose.”

“Come with me,” he said for the hundredth time since the president asked him to make the diplomatic trip, representing the administration on a visit with some of the country’s closest allies. Since President Nelson was still recovering—in more ways than one—from his son’s criminal activities, several of the allies had requested he send his popular vice president in his stead.

Sam flopped on the bed. “I can’t. I have work and Scotty, and Freddie is going on his honeymoon for two weeks and… I can’t.” No Nick at home to entertain her. No Freddie at work to entertain her. The next few weeks were going to totally suck monkey balls.

“Actually, you can.” Nick hovered above her, propped on arms ripped with muscles, his splendid chest on full display. “You have more vacation time saved up than you can use in a lifetime, and you have the right to actually use it. Scotty will be fine with Shelby, your dad and Celia, your sisters and the Secret Service here to entertain him. We could even ask Mrs. Littlefield to come up for the weekends.”

Their son’s former guardian would love the chance to spend time with him, but Sam didn’t feel right about leaving him for so long. However, the thought of being without Nick for three endless weeks made her sick. His trip to Iran earlier in the year had been pure torture, especially since it kept getting extended.

“Why’d you have to tell Nelson you wanted to be more than a figurehead vice president?” She play-punched his chest. “Everything was fine when he was ignoring you.”

He kissed her lips and then her neck. “You’re so, so cute when you pout.”

“Badass cops do not pout.”

“Mine does when she doesn’t get her own way, and it’s truly adorable.”

She scowled at him. “Badass cops are not adorable.”

“Mine is.” Leaving a trail of hot kisses on her neck, he said, “Come with me, Samantha. London, Paris, Rome, the Vatican, Amsterdam, Brussels, The Hague. Come see the world with me.”

Sam had never been to Europe and had always wanted to go, so she was sorely tempted to say to hell with her responsibilities.

“Come on.” He rolled her earlobe between his teeth and pressed against her suggestively. “Three whole weeks together away from the madness of DC. You know you want to go. Gonzo could cover for you at work, and things have been slow anyway.”

There hadn’t been a homicide in more than a week, which meant they were due, and that was another reason to stay home. “Don’t say that and put a jinx on us.”

“Come away with me. Scotty will be fine. We’ll FaceTime with him every day and bring him presents. He’ll be well cared for by everyone else who loves him.” He kissed her neck as he unbuttoned her shirt and pushed it aside. “You’d get to meet the Queen of England.”

Sam moaned. She loved the queen—speaking of a badass female.

“And the Pope. Plus, you’ll need some clothes—and shoes. Lots of shoes.”

“Stop it.” She turned her face to avoid his kiss. “You’re fighting dirty.”

“Because I want my wife to come with me on the trip of a lifetime? I need you Samantha.”

As he well knew, she could deny him nothing when he said he needed her. “Fine, I’ll go! But only if it’s okay with Scotty and if I can swing it at work.”

“Yes,” her husband said on a long exhale. “We’ll have so much fun.”

“Will we actually get to see anything?”

He pushed himself up to continue packing. “I’ll make sure of it.”

“Um, excuse me.”

“What’s up?”

“My temperature after your attempts at persuasion.”

A slow, lazy smile spread across his face, making him the sexiest man in this universe—and the next. “Is my baby feeling a little needy?”

She pulled her T-shirt over her head and released the front clasp on her bra. “More than a little.”

“We can’t have that.” Stepping to the foot of the bed, he grasped the legs of her yoga pants and yanked them off.

“Lock the door.”

“Scotty’s asleep.”

“Lock the door, or this isn’t happening.” With Secret Service agents all over their house, Sam couldn’t relax if the door wasn’t locked.

“This is definitely happening, but if it’ll make you happy, I’ll lock the door.”

“It’ll make me happy, which will, in turn, make you happy.” She splayed her legs wide-open to give him a show as he returned from locking the door, and was rewarded with gorgeous hazel eyes that heated with desire when he saw her waiting for him.

“You little vixen,” he muttered.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Sure, you don’t,” he said, laughing as he came down on top of her and set out to give her a preview of what three weeks away together might be like.

They broke the news to Scotty the next morning at breakfast. “So,” Nick said tentatively, “what would you think if Mom came with me to Europe?”

Thirteen-year-old Scotty, never at his best first thing in the morning, shrugged. “It’s fine.”

“Really?” Sam said. “You wouldn’t mind? Shelby, Tracy and Angela would be around to hang with you, and Gramps and Celia too. We thought maybe Mrs. Littlefield could come up for a weekend or two if she’s free.”

“Sure, that sounds good.”

Sam glanced at Nick, who seemed equally perplexed by his lack of reaction. They’d expected him to ask to come with them, at the very least.

“Is everything okay?” Sam asked her son.

“Uh-huh.” He finished his cereal and got up to put the bowl in the sink. “I’m going to finish getting ready for school.”

“Okay, bud,” Nick said.

“Something’s up,” Sam said as soon as Scotty left the room.

“I agree. He didn’t even ask if he could miss school to come with us.”

“I thought the same thing.”

“We’ll have to see if we can get him to talk to us before we go—and not in the morning,” Nick said.

“I’ll ask Shelby to make spaghetti for dinner. That always puts him in a good mood.” Sam’s phone rang, and when she saw the number for Dispatch, she groaned. “Damn it. You jinxed me!” So much for getting out of Dodge without having to worry about work. She took the call. “Holland.”

“Lieutenant, there was a fire overnight in Chevy Chase.” The dispatcher referred to the exclusive Northwest neighborhood that was home to a former U.S. president, ambassadors and other wealthy residents. “We have two DOA at the scene,” the dispatcher said, reciting the address. “The fire marshal has requested Homicide detectives.”

“Did he say why?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.” Thankfully, she’d showered and gotten dressed before she woke Scotty. “Please call Sergeant Gonzales and Detective Cruz and ask them to meet me there.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Sam flipped her phone closed with a satisfying smack. That smacking sound was one of many reasons she’d never upgrade to a smart phone.

“You’ll still be able to come with me, right?” Nick asked, looking adorably uncertain.

Sam went over to where he sat at the table and kissed him. “I’ll talk to Malone today and see if I can make it happen.”

“Keep me posted.”

A ringing phone woke Christina Billings from a sound sleep. Two-year-old Alex had been up during the night with a fever and cold that was making him miserable and her sleep deprived. Her fiancé, Tommy, had slept through that and apparently couldn’t hear his phone ringing either. He was due at work in an hour and was usually up by now.

“Tommy.” She nudged him, but he didn’t stir. “Tommy. Your phone.”

He came to slowly, blinking rapidly.

“The phone, Tommy. Answer it before it wakes Alex.” He needed more sleep and so did she, or this was going to be a very long day.

Tommy grabbed the phone from the bedside table.

Christina saw the word Dispatch on the screen.

“Gonzales.”

She couldn’t hear the dispatcher’s side of the conversation, but she heard Tommy’s grunt of acknowledgment before he ended the call, closing his eyes even as he continued to clutch the phone.

Christina wondered if he was going back to sleep after being called into work. She was about to say something when he got out of bed and headed for the shower.

Nine months ago today, his partner, A. J. Arnold, had been gunned down right in front of Tommy as they approached a suspect. After a long downward spiral following Arnold’s murder, Tommy had seemed to rebound somewhat during the summer. But the rebound hadn’t lasted into the fall.

In the last month, since his new partner, Cameron Green, had joined the squad, Christina had watched him regress into his grief. He’d said and done all the right things when it came to welcoming Cameron, but he was obviously spiraling again, and she had no idea what to do to help him or how to reach him. Even when lying next to her in bed, he seemed so far away from her.

Sometimes, when she had a rare moment alone, she allowed her thoughts to wander to life without Tommy and Alex at the center of it. She loved them both—desperately—but she wasn’t sure how much more she could take of the distant, closed-off version of the man she loved. They were supposed to have been married by now. Like everything else, that plan had been shoved aside to make room for Tommy’s overwhelming grief. It’d been months since they’d discussed getting married. In the meantime, she took care of Alex and everything else while Tommy worked and came home to sleep before starting the cycle all over again.

They didn’t talk about anything other than Alex. They never went anywhere together or as a family. They hadn’t had sex in so long she’d forgotten when it had last happened. She was as unhappy as she’d ever been. Something had to give—and soon, or she would be forced to decide whether their relationship was still healthy for her. She did not want to have to make that decision.

Only the thought of leaving Tommy at his lowest moment, not to mention leaving Alex, had kept her from making a move before now. She loved that little boy with her whole heart and soul. She’d stepped away from her own career as Nick’s chief of staff to stay home with him and had hoped to add to their family by now. When she thought about the early days of her relationship with Tommy, when they’d been so madly in love, she couldn’t have imagined feeling as insignificant to him as a piece of furniture that was always there when he finally decided to come home.

Christina hadn’t told anyone about the trouble brewing between them. In her heart of hearts, she hoped they could still work it out somehow, and the last thing she needed was her friends and family holding a grudge against him forever—and they would if they had any idea just how bad things had gotten. Her parents had questioned the wisdom of her giving up a high-profile job to stay home to care for her boyfriend’s child, especially when she’d made more money than him. But she’d been ready for a break from the political rat race when Alex came along, and she had no regrets about her decision. Or she hadn’t until Tommy checked out of their relationship.

This weekend they’d be expected to celebrate at Freddie and Elin’s wedding, and she’d have to pretend that everything was fine in her relationship when it was anything but. She wasn’t sure how she would pull off another convincing performance for their friends. Tommy was one of Freddie’s groomsmen, so she’d get to spend most of that day on her own while he attended to his friend.

Dangling at the end of her rope in this situation, more than once she’d thought about taking Alex and leaving, even though she had no legal right to take him. Another thing they’d never gotten around to—her adoption of him after his mother was killed. What would Tommy do if she left with his son? Call the police on her? That made her laugh bitterly. She’d be surprised if he noticed they were gone.

Tommy came out of the bathroom and went to the closet where he had clean clothes to choose from thanks to her. Did he ever wonder how that happened? He put on jeans and a black T-shirt and then went to unlock the bedside drawer where he kept his badge, weapon and cuffs.

She watched him slide the weapon into the holster he wore on his hip and jam the cuffs and badge into the back pockets of his jeans, the same way he did every day. Holding her breath, she waited to see if he would say anything to her or come around the bed to kiss her goodbye the way he used to before disaster struck, but like he did so often these days, he simply turned and left the room.

A minute later, she heard the front door close behind him.

For a long time after he left, she lay in bed staring up at the ceiling with tears running down her cheeks. She couldn’t take much more of this.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Noah Buchanan jerked awake when the generator started up next door.

What the hell?

He rolled over to squint at the bedside clock. “You gotta be freaking kidding me,” he muttered.

It was seven-twelve on a Saturday morning. Wasn’t there an unspoken rule everybody understood that you had to be quiet until at least nine on the weekends? As a matter of common courtesy?

Grabbing a pair of jeans from the chair in the corner, he dragged them on over top of his boxers and stumbled down the hall toward the kitchen. Through the wide window above the sink he caught a flash of blond hair over the back fence. Definitely his new neighbor.

Barefoot, he stepped outside into the warm late-June morning and headed across the back lawn, the grass soft and slightly damp beneath his soles. He stopped at the neck-high cedar fence that separated the properties, and the moment he saw his sexy new neighbor at the far side of her yard, he suddenly wasn’t annoyed anymore.

Poppy stood in profile to him as she raised the wand of the power washer and started on her back fence. She was young, maybe mid-twenties. She wore a tiny pair of frayed cutoff shorts and a string bikini top that framed full, round breasts, leaving her midriff and long legs bare.

Christ. It took superhuman effort to drag his eyes up to her face.

Her honey-blond hair was up in a ponytail, and he could see the wires from the earbuds she had in. Completely absorbed in her task, she had no idea he was standing there staring at her.

When his parents explain that their condo does not allow pets, Jimmy is heartbroken. While skiing in Aspen the entire family is killed in an avalanche. Jimmy goes to heaven and meets an angel who decides to send Jimmy back to earth as the very Golden Retriever he’d wanted for his own and to learn the one lesson all human beings must learn…unconditional love.

Excerpt

Jimmy Longwood pressed his face against the pet store window, not

minding the cold. On the other side of the glass was an eight-week-old Golden

Retriever puppy that Jimmy had named “Bubblehead” because the

puppy’s head was unusually large. Bubblehead was just as eager to

see Jimmy and jumped over his five brothers and sisters to stand nose

to nose with Jimmy.

Jimmy’s heart leapt just seeing the adorable puppy.

“Did you miss me, boy? I missed you. Now that school is out for

the holidays, I can visit you every day for as long as I want.”

The puppy licked the glass as if he understood every word Jimmy

had said. As Jimmy walked into the store, Bubblehead followed his

every move through the glass, wagging his tail in anticipation.

A little silver bell tinkled as Jimmy entered the shop. “Hi, ya, Mr.

Lenza!”

“Hi, Jimmy. It can’t be time for school to be out already is it?”

“Yep. Three fifteen on the dot.”

“Ever since these puppies were brought in, I could set my clock by

you, Jimmy.”

“How is Bubblehead today?”

“He’s perfect, of course. When are you going to take him home

where he belongs?”

Jimmy looked over at Bubblehead longingly. “I’m still negotiating

with my parents.”

“Jimmy, if an eight-year-old boy can’t melt a mother’s heart,

maybe I could help with your sale’s pitch.”

Just then the bell over the door jingled again. Mr. Lenza

brightened as a woman and her young daughter walked in. “Sorry,

Jimmy. Customers.”

“Go right ahead, Mr. Lenza. I just want to talk to Bubblehead for

awhile.”

Mr. Lenza patted Jimmy’s head through the stocking hat he wore,

which normally Jimmy would have instructed others never to do as he

hated people treating him like he was a kid. Mr. Lenza was different.

Besides the fact that he was a pet store owner and loved dogs and cats

almost as much as Jimmy did, Mr. Lenza never said a word to Jimmy

about playing with the animals and he allowed Jimmy to give the

puppies plenty of hugs and even help out around the shop from time to

time. Mr. Lenza was the only person in the world that Jimmy had

confided to that he wanted to be a veterinarian when he grew up.

While the woman spoke to Mr. Lenza, Jimmy picked up

Bubblehead, held him and let the puppy lick his face.

The little girl who was about Jimmy’s same age walked up to him.

“Hi, my name’s Sally. What’s yours?”

“Jimmy.”

Sally smiled as she watched Bubblehead and Jimmy. “He likes

you.”

“We’re pals.”

“Really? Then why don’t you take him home? I would,” Sally said

stroking Bubblehead’s back. “He’s got a really big head. Is he

deformed?”

“No way! He’s special. He’s a champion. You should see his

pedigree. And he’s very expensive.”

“How expensive?”

“Eight hundred dollars.”

“Is that a lot for a dog? I have a cat. Santa brought her to me last

year.”

“Santa?” Jimmy’s face screwed up. “You don’t still believe in

Santa, do you?”

“No, but I did last year. And when I did, I got the kitten I wanted,”

Sally replied smugly.

The little girl’s mother finished her shopping with Mr. Lenza and

the little girl had to leave.

“Bye, Jimmy. Merry Christmas.”

“Bye, Sally. Same to you.”

Just as Sally and her mother walked out, Jimmy’s cellular phone

rang. He reached in his backpack and answered it. “Hi, Mom.”

“Sweetheart, I am just about to go back into court and I called the

apartment and you weren’t home yet. Are you all right?”

“I’m fine, Mom. I was just…er….Christmas shopping.”

“What kind of shopping? You’re not using my Visa again to buy

something on the internet are you?”

“No, Mom. I’m just down the street…”

“Oh, good, would you stop in the market and pick up the order I

called in? He put it on my bill. It’s just some milk and bread and fruit.

It won’t be too heavy to carry home…Jimmy? Where exactly did you

say you were?”

“Er, Mom, hasn’t the bailiff called for you yet? Judges can’t be

late you know.”

“Jimmy, are you at Mr. Lenza’s again?”

Just then the bell jingled and a very elegantly dressed woman in a

mink coat walked in. Jimmy looked up, forgetting that his mother had

been to Mr. Lenza’s with him a half dozen times, but only to indulge

his whims rather than actually considering the purchase of a Golden

Retriever puppy.

“Jimmy, I would know that silver bell anywhere. You are at Mr.

Lenza’s! What have your father and I told you about this puppy

issue?”

“Mom, Bubblehead is not an issue. He’s a puppy.” Jimmy put the

puppy back in the window to play with his brothers and sisters.

“He’s against the rules in our co-op, Jimmy.”

“But, Mom, I love him. And he loves me. He doesn’t understand

stupid ‘no pet’ rules.”

“And obviously, neither do you, totally. But listen, we’ll talk

about it tonight at dinner. I really do have to go. They’re waiting for

  1. Don’t forget the groceries, okay?”

Jimmy took out his I-Phone and entered the list. “You sure you

can’t think of anything else? Did you get my peanut butter?”

“I forgot.”

“Dad’s ‘Chubby Hubby’ ice cream?”

“Better get that, too. Thanks, sweetheart. I love you.”

“Love you, Mom.”

While Jimmy was on the phone to his mother, he didn’t pay much

attention to the beautiful woman nor her conversation with Mr. Lenza.

It wasn’t until he was off the phone that their words came crashing

into his brain.

“I have exactly the Golden Retriever puppy you’d be interested in,

Mrs. Richardson, over here in the window. They are fine puppies, all

of them. Excuse me, Jimmy,” Mr. Lenza said, discreetly shooing

Jimmy away to make room for a buying customer.

Mrs. Richardson smelled like spring flowers, Jimmy thought as she

followed Mr. Lenza to the window. As Jimmy backed away from

them, horror filled his heart.

“Hello, there,” she said sweetly to him, “I’ll bet you’re asking

Santa for a puppy for Christmas, too.”

“I…am. But I can’t have one.”

“Really? Why is that?” She asked.

“My Dad says our building doesn’t allow pets, but I don’t actually

believe it. I think that…”

Mr. Lenza interrupted, knitting his eyebrows. “Jimmy, didn’t I

hear you talking to your mother just now?” Then he turned to Mrs.

Richardson very quickly. “His mother is a judge. Very busy lady.

Important, too.” He turned back to Jimmy. “Maybe you best be

getting along, son.”

Jimmy was very wise to adult ways; he knew that Mr. Lenza was

anxious to make his sale. He could take a hint.

“Yeah, I better be going. Have to get the groceries. Stuff like that.”

Jimmy put his mittens back on before going out into the snow.

“See you tomorrow, Mr. Lenza.”

“Goodbye, Jimmy.” Mr. Lenza opened the door for Jimmy and

closed it behind him.

Jimmy walked just past the shop, then stopped and slammed his

back against the wall, so that Mr. Lenza and Mrs. Richardson could

not see him from their vantage point. He had to know which puppy

she was going to buy.

With his heart in his mouth, Jimmy watched as Mrs. Richardson

picked up all five puppies and inspected them carefully. Then he

watched as she went to the register with Mr. Lenza and then pulled out

her Visa card.

“She bought one! But which one!” He put his hands together and

with his eyes raised to heaven, prayed, “Please God, don’t let it be

Bubblehead.”

Mrs. Richardson finished her transaction with Mr. Lenza, but

oddly, she walked out without taking a puppy with her. Jimmy

watched as she hailed a cab, got in and drove away.

Totally confused, Jimmy walked back in the shop. “Mr. Lenza,

didn’t she buy a puppy?”

“Jimmy, are you back here?”

Jimmy raced to the counter and looking up into Mr. Lenza’s face,

he read the verdict before it was pronounced.

“She bought one, Jimmy. The male, with the big head.”

“Bubblehead?”

“That’s the one. I’m sorry. But I have to find homes for these

little guys, Jimmy.”

“But she couldn’t have. She didn’t take him with her.”

“She’s coming back on Christmas Eve. Must be a surprise for

someone special.”

Jimmy’s face went white. Heat of anger mixed with chills of fear.

He felt as if all the blood had drained from his body. He didn’t

understand that his heart was breaking in two and this was what

heartbreak felt like. Tears filled his eyes. “I have only one more day

with Bubblehead?”

“I’m sorry, so sorry. I had no idea he meant this much to you.

There are four more…”

“Don’t you understand, Mr. Lenza? There’s only one

Bubblehead!” Jimmy turned to the window and picked up his puppy.

Bubblehead licked Jimmy’s cheek, catching a tear.

Jimmy looked into the puppy’s eager brown eyes as something

magical passed between them. It was as if Jimmy could hear

Bubblehead’s thoughts. Maybe Jimmy was only eight years old. That

didn’t matter. He knew there was some very, very special about

Bubblehead. Somehow he knew that there would never be another

dog for him like this one.

What Readers are Saying

“…incredible. It’s dark, angsty, dangerous and delicious.” – Two Bookish Brits

“It has the authors authentic touch of darkness, but just the right amount of romance to take it downright swoony. T.M. Frazier writes the BEST anti-heroes and I seem to fall in love with each one as they come into my world!” – Elle’s Book Blog

T.M. Frazier

Biography

T.M. Frazier never imagined that a single person would ever read a word she wrote when she published her first book in 2013. Now, she is a USA Today bestselling author. Her books have been translated into numerous languages and published all around the world.

T.M. enjoys writing what she calls ‘wrong side of the tracks romance’ with morally corrupt antiheroes and ballsy heroines.

Her books have been described as raw, dark and gritty. Basically, what that means, is while some authors are great at describing a flower as it blooms, T.M. is better at describing it in the final stages of decay.

She loves meeting her readers, but if you see her at an event please don’t pinch her because she’s not ready to wake up from this amazing dream.

My Review

This book knocked my socks off!

Grim and Tricks are back in the gritty, shocking, sensual continuation of the Perversion Trilogy.

When two rival gangs turn up the heat, Tricks (Emma Jean) is caught in the middle and becomes a captive of the Los Meurtos. Their leader, Marco, learns she is a spy and decides to teach her and the Bedlam gang a lesson. But, he’s not working alone.

I won’t give it away, but there’s a surprise twist here I did not see coming!

Grim is going crazy with worry about his girl, Tricks, and his new responsibilities as leader of the Bedlam. When a load of heroin and a murdered body from the Irish mob shows up on his doorstep, he realizes theres an intricate plan afoot to destroy all that he loves.

Then he learns of Tricks’s capture and subsequent torture and the war is on!

 Favorite lines:

The broken don’t need to be put back together, they need to be loved for all their pieces.”

“I’ll give you time, Tricks, but this isn’t over. We aren’t the kind of thing that can just be over. You and me Tricks. We. Don’t. End.”

I’m only equipped for death and destruction.” He smiles and I know he’s wrong because I see nothing but life in his eyes.

Make no mistake, this book is raw, unfiltered, pain. But, it’s also promise, hope, and love.

I want to give it 5 lovely kisses, but there are some serious editing issues that pulled it down to a 4 for me. Still, a must-read!

He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive… The Woman Left Behind by Linda Howard #RomSuspense #Read @AvonBooks

Jina Modell works in Communications for a paramilitary organization, and she really likes it. She likes the money, she likes the coolness factor—and it was very cool, even for Washington, DC. She liked being able to kick terrorist butts without ever leaving the climate-controlled comfort of the control room.

But when Jina displays a really high aptitude for spatial awareness and action, she’s reassigned to work as an on-site drone operator in the field with one of the GO-teams, an elite paramilitary unit. The only problem is she isn’t particularly athletic, to put it mildly, and in order to be fit for the field, she has to learn how to run and swim for miles, jump out of a plane, shoot a gun…or else be out of a job.

Team leader Levi, call sign Ace, doesn’t have much confidence in Jina–who he dubbed Babe as soon as he heard her raspy, sexy voice–making it through the rigors of training. The last thing he needs is some tech geek holding them back from completing a dangerous, covert operation. In the following months, however, no one is more surprised than he when Babe, who hates to sweat, begins to thrive in her new environment, displaying a grit and courage that wins her the admiration of her hardened, battle-worn teammates. What’s even more surprising is that the usually very disciplined GO-team leader can’t stop thinking about kissing her smart, stubborn mouth…or the building chemistry and tension between them.

Meanwhile, a powerful Congresswoman is working behind the scenes to destroy the GO-teams, and a trap is set to ambush Levi’s squad in Syria. While the rest of the operatives set off on their mission, Jina remains at the base to control the surveillance drone, when the base is suddenly attacked with explosives. Thought dead by her comrades, Jina escapes to the desert where, brutally tested beyond measure, she has to figure out how to stay undetected by the enemy and make it to her crew in time before they’re exfiltrated out of the country.

But Levi never leaves a soldier behind, especially the brave woman he’s fallen for. He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive.

Excerpt

She wanted to reach out and touch him, but despite what had just happened between them, she felt constrained. Their make-out session hadn’t changed anything. He was still the leader of that team, and he’d do whatever was necessary for their operational stability because their very lives depended on it. Her job was to safeguard them as much as possible, to provide an extra set of eyes looking for trouble or gathering information without exposing them to unnecessary danger.

If she were in an arguing frame of mind, she’d yell at him that the guys wouldn’t mind at all if she and Levi began a relationship, but she’d be lying. It would make a difference. The others would subconsciously begin looking for signs of favoritism, which would foster resentment and a lack of trust. Any argument between her and Levi would necessarily cause tension among the others. That was just how team dynamics worked; a disagreement between any two members was one thing, but throw sex into the mixture and it became combustible.

She turned her head and stared at the sky as grimly as he was, and for the same reason. As things stood, she had two choices: she could quit training and have Levi—for how long was up for debate—or she could stay on the team and deal with the bitter truth that they couldn’t be together.

She. Couldn’t. Quit. Doing so would betray everything she was, every sense of self. Maybe she drove herself past what a sane person would do, but didn’t the guys also do that? Being who they were, doing what they did, required more of them than, say, a regular nine-to-five job.

She had been happy with that nine-to-five job, but now this was her reality, and she wouldn’t, couldn’t, turn her back on it.

Excerpt

He motioned with his arm, urging her a few more steps forward. “Careful,” he murmured.

Poppy looked to her toes. The deck came to an abrupt halt in front of her, its elevation dropping by several feet.

The captain hopped down. “The beakhead, my lady,” he said with a gallant wave to the triangular deck that formed the pointy front of the Infinity. He reached up and placed his hands on her hips to help her down.

But when she was steady, he didn’t let go.

“This is as far forward as one can stand on deck,” he told her.

She pointed to a spot a few feet ahead. “What about—”

“As one can stand safely on deck,” he amended. He adjusted their position so that he was standing behind her. “Now close your eyes.”
“But then I can’t see the stars.”

“You can open them later.”

She tilted her head to the left, right, and back again, as if to say, Oh, very well, but she closed her eyes.

“Now tilt your head up. Not all the way, just a bit.”

She did, and maybe it was that motion, or maybe it was just because she’d closed her eyes, but she felt instantly off-balance, as if something far greater than the ocean had stolen her equilibrium.

The captain’s hands tightened on her hips. “What do you feel?” he asked, his lips coming close to her ear.

“The wind.”

“What else?” She swallowed. Licked her lips.

“The salt in the air.”

“What else?”

“The motion, the speed.”

He moved his mouth closer. “What else?”

And then she said the one thing that had been true from the beginning.

You.”

Nick and Eve- North Pole Unlimited by @Elle_Rush #HolidayRomance #amreading @ExpressoReads

Nick and Eve
Elle Rush
(North Pole Unlimited, #3)
Publication date: November 19th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Nick’s plan: dodge his grandmother’s matchmaking attempts by claiming Eve is his date for Christmas. He probably should have asked Eve first.

Although Nick Klassen is grateful when Eve rides to his rescue after he breaks down outside of December, Manitoba, he can’t run fast enough when his meddling grandmother tries to set him up with the pretty tow-truck driver. Then he gets an idea.

Between juggling extra hours at work and a never-ending Christmas to-do list, Eve LeBlanc doesn’t have time for a new man in her life. But ever since she picked Nick up on the side of the road, she’s been running into him everywhere.

His flirtations started innocently enough but when his grandmother invites “his girlfriend” to the family’s Christmas dinner, Nick realizes if he wants to stop pretending about Eve, he must come clean. Once Eve learns of his deception, he’ll need Santa’s help to turn their fake relationship in the real thing.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

Eve rolled to a stop in the driveway. “This is impressive.” Strings of unlit Christmas lights framed his grandmother’s two-storey house and circled the spruce tree in the front yard. Plastic candy canes stuck in the snowbanks lined the sidewalk, and a pinecone-studded wreath twice the size of the one on the tow-truck’s grill hung from the screen door.

“You should see the inside. Can you wait till I’m certain her car will start? She hasn’t run it in a couple weeks,” Nick said.

His grandmother must have been watching from the window, because the front door opened before they hit the first step. “Come in, it’s freezing out here,” she said.

The entranceway and the adjacent living room were fully Christmas-bombed, from the reindeer-shaped sofa cushions to the double-decker white candy bowl stand, which had a Frosty face and top hat stuck to the top of the wire frame. Nick held back a snicker as Eve spun in a three-sixty and breathed a quiet, “Whoa.”

“You’re not kidding,” he whispered back.

“I’m Adelaide Klassen. Who might you be?” his gran asked. She was dressed for her appointment. After a lifetime of seeing her in business suits at the office, it was always a shock to Nick’s system to see his grey-haired grandmother in jeans and a plaid, flannel shirt.

Eve gave Adelaide’s hand a hearty shake. “Eve LeBlanc, tow-truck driver.”

“It’s lovely to meet you. Are you a special friend of Nick’s?”

Nick sighed. She was starting, and they’d been in the house for thirty seconds. “No, Gran, she’s not my girlfriend.”

“I just picked him up on the side of the road. I must say he is the cutest stray I’ve come across in a while,” Eve added with a smile.

“Don’t encourage her!”

Baking up Memories-Rice Pudding #Recipe #Cooking

Rice Pudding

My family didn’t have a lot of extra money when I was growing up, but there always seemed to be enough to get by.

My dad would hunt and fish to fill the freezer, and Mom canned all kinds of fruit and vegetables for the pantry. I remember jar after jar of peaches and pears, jams and jellies. Dad drove truck for a big grocery chain and would get the damaged stock at discount prices, which was great, but it had to be immediately processed so Mom had her hands full.

We had two big canners, those blue enamel ones with the metal jar lifter that looked way too flimsy for the weight of those steaming jars. I imagine she suffered some nasty burns providing for her family.

This rice pudding recipe reminds me of those days. Times filled with the scent of baking and the kitchen counter filled with delicious treats. It’s like a warm hug in a mug 🙂

Ingredients

Servings-4/ Prep Time-45 min

2 cups cooked long grain white rice

1 ½ cups milk

1 cup sugar

2 tsp Corn Starch

2 eggs

2 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp Vanilla

½ cup golden raisins

Directions

Add 1 cup rice to 2 cups water, bring to boil in sturdy pot. Turn heat down to simmer, cover with lid and cook 25-30 minutes. Don’t lift lid!

Set rice aside in medium-sized bowl to cool.

Add milk, sugar and corn starch to emptied pot and cook on medium heat until mixture thickens- approx. 5 minutes. Stir often to avoid scalding milk.

While milk is heating, crack eggs into small bowl and whisk lightly with fork.

When milk has thickened to a sauce consistency, pour approx. 1 cup into egg mixture, (set pot aside off of heat) and stir briskly together with fork. Place pot back on heat and slowly pour egg mix into the pot, stirring constantly.

Cook for 1 minute longer.

Pour over rice in bowl. Add cinnamon, vanilla and raisins. Stir and set aside to cool.

Enjoy!

SIT…STAY…BEG

Garrett Kilcannon, a former dot com super-success who now devotes his life to rescuing dogs and finding them homes, prefers to keep his secrets buried as deep as a dog hides his bone. So when he learns his father has invited a journalist to Waterford Farm to write and produce an in-depth profile on him, he doesn’t care that she’s a childhood friend or drop dead gorgeous. He has zero tolerance for the media…until he sees a different side when she gets through the walls of a rescue dog who’s refused to eat during her short stay at Waterford. Unwillingly charmed and undeniably attracted, Garrett agrees to the interview that could break down a few of his emotional walls, too.

Garrett might not want to share the story of his colorful former life, but Jessie Curtis has the skills to peel back the layers of this sexy, complicated, caring man. In the process, she not only discovers his secrets, she finds herself falling for a man who touches her heart in a way she never thought possible. Her entire career is riding on this one explosive interview, but can she bear to repay Garrett’s trust by selling his secrets? Or can a woman who gave up on happiness a long time ago learn to believe that all it takes to rescue a lost heart is the love of a good man?

The Dogfather Series

Daniel Kilcannon is known as “The Dogfather” for a reason. It’s not just his renowned skills as a veterinarian, his tremendous love of dogs, or the fact that he has turned his homestead in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains into a world class dog training and rescue facility. Ask his six grown children who run Waterford Farm for him, and they’ll tell you that their father’s nickname is due to his uncanny ability to pull a few strings to get what he wants. And what he wants is for his four sons and two daughters to find the kind of life-changing love he had with his dearly departed wife, Annie. This old dog has a few new tricks…and he’ll use them all to see his pack all settled into their happily ever afters!

She lives in Florida with her husband, and still attempts to run the lives of her teenage daughter and 20-something son. She loves dogs, books, chocolate, and wine, but not always in that order.

My Review

This is one of those books that sneak up and leave the reader with the warm fuzzies.

Daniel Kilcannon has turned his homestead in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains into a world class dog training and rescue facility after the death of his wife, Annie. His children help with different areas of the business and each book in the series features their stories.
Garrett left his dot com corporation to care for rescue dogs on the ranch and find them their forever homes.
Jessie Curtis once considered Waterford Farms the home she wished she had. When she’s given the opportunity of her journalistic career interviewing the secretive Kilcannon she’d crushed on as a teen, her loyalties are divided.

Will these two disillusioned people learn to trust in love, or will the story see the light of day and ruin their chances?

Handsome men and puppies, what’s not to like about this series? 🙂

Holiday in Death by J.D. Robb #Mystery #BookReview

Lieutenant Eve Dallas tails a serial killer who has a passion for the “Twelve Days of Christmas” in this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series.

No one likes to be alone during the holidays. For New York’s most posh dating service, Personally Yours, it is the season to bring lonely hearts together. But Lieutenant Eve Dallas, on the trail of a ritualistic serial killer who likes to dress up as Santa Claus, has made a disturbing discovery: all of the victims have been traced to Personally Yours. As the murders continue, Eve enters into an elite world of people searching for their one true love. A world where the power of love leads men and women into the ultimate act of betrayal…

Biography
J.D. Robb is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and the pseudonym for #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The futuristic suspense series stars Eve Dallas, a New York City police lieutenant with a dark past. Initially conceived as a trilogy, readers clamored for more of Eve and the mysterious Roarke. Leverage in Death, on sale Septenber 2018, is the 47th entry in the series.
My Review

Santa is on the warpath in this holiday who-done-it by New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces one of her toughest assignments as a sadistic killer haunts the city dressed as Santa Claus. His calling card: expensive tokens depicting the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Eve has to track a monster terrorizing the patrons of a dating service while trying to block the memories of her own childhood. Thankfully, she has the support of her incredibly talented and sexy husband, Roarke.

This story deals with some tough issues, but adds to the depth of Eve’s character and her relationships on the police force. She often comes across as brash, but underneath, in a place she usually only lets Roarke see, she’s still the abused, lonely little girl who killed her father to survive.

I give Holiday in Death 5 lovely kisses- A must read!

Are you a fan of the In Death series? Do you like Eve?

About As You Were:

They say love is beautiful. They lie. Love is a dark, broken man with whiskey-colored eyes. Love is knowing he will never return my feelings. It is the final chord of a guitar riff as it bleeds into silence. Love is Zeke Danton. I convinced myself I needed him. I thought there was no one better to record my debut album with… I was wrong. Encased in layers of ice, he wears his pain like a protective shield. Wanting what I can’t have might ruin me. But so help me, I crave his destruction.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“You’re not a people person, are you?”

Silence.

“Zeke?”

Nothing.

Oh hell no.

Planting fists on my hips, I glare at his dark, close-cropped hair. If it wasn’t for my guitar swaying from the movement, I would look totally badass. “It’s rude to ignore people, you know. And it’s really rude not to look them in the eye when they’re speaking.”

He stills.

Zeke turns. His movement is slow, deliberate. I swallow, resisting the urge to stumble back. His gaze purposely travels the length of my bare legs. They’re perfectly ordinary, with ankles and knees and everything in between. But under his scrutiny they become something more, something desirable. My calves never felt so smooth, my thighs never so lean. I shiver. His stare flits over my denim cutoffs, partially obscured by my Fender, and rests a moment too long on my exposed stomach. His eyes then take in the loose cropped T-shirt and caress the outline of my breasts. They’re made even more obvious by the guitar strap resting between them, and it takes everything I have not to arch my back.

Zeke’s jaw tightens.

My thighs clench.

Since my shirt hangs haphazardly off one shoulder, his stare zeros in on the dusting of freckles near my collarbone. Goose bumps break out on my skin. Taking his sweet-ass time, Zeke lets his gaze roam my neck, lips, cheeks, hair, and, finally, finally, his eyes meet mine.

Whoa.

Sun-kissed bronze. I’ve never seen anything like it. His eyes are golden caramel mixed with flecks of amber and tawny. Despite the color’s vibrancy, they’re flat, defensive, caged in so much suspicion that I’m desperate to know who or what put it there. Distrusting or not, they’re beautiful.

“See?” Breathless. Crap. “Knew you could do it.”

Then, with more grace than a six-foot-two mountain of a man has a right to, Zeke stands. My head tips back to take him all in. The man is close, so close I inhale his scent—pine needles after heavy rain. I take in a lungful, wanting to secrete away this part of him before he shatters the illusion of perfection by speaking.

Zeke’s eyes drop to my lips.

I swallow.

He swallows.

“Zeke, sugar?”

His head whips to the right. Standing in the doorway is a tall, curvaceous bombshell. From the glistening cobalt hair cascading over tan shoulders to her hourglass figure enhanced by a white wrap dress, she is everything I am not. Her flawless makeup is artfully applied, and, at a guess, she’s either in her late twenties or early thirties, older than me by at least five years. She wears it well. So well, it takes everything I have not to groan out loud. Is she lost? But then I remember the intimate way she greeted Zeke.

My insides constrict.

“Oh.” Red manicured nails clutch a voluptuous chest. “Am I interrupting?” With a smile that is two parts conniving and one part candid, the woman saunters toward me, her bejeweled hand outstretched. “I’m Selena. And you are…?”

Stunned.

Zeke’s voice is hard. “She’s no one.”

Ouch.

I glare at Zeke. Did he eye-fuck me despite having a girlfriend, or even worse, a wife? Asshole.

One Month Until Christmas!

I happened to glance at the calendar today and almost had a heart attack; Christmas will be here before I know it!
I’m so ill-prepared this year. Normally, I begin shopping as early as June (I know :)) but I hate trying to come up with ideas at the last minute. There’s nothing worse than spending hard-earned cash on a gift you just know is going to end up in a corner or under a bed somewhere, right?
I considered going the gift card route- easy, safe- but my daughter would probably disown me, lol.
So this is what I’m going to do:
Tell me your best gift ideas ( not too expensive- struggling writer here! ) and I’ll choose three of the best to receive $10 Amazon gift cards, winner determined in next month’s holiday update post.
Good luck!
