#BookReview- Two Futuristic #Crime Dramas worth #reading by @TPolin6 and J.D. Robb

This week I managed to read two incredible futuristic crime novels by powerful writers, Teri Polin and J. D. Robb.

I’m on a deadline for the next novel I’m writing and have one releasing March 20th (my birthday!) so I haven’t had the chance to read as much as I wish, but I did enjoy a book from a new-to-me author and another from the incomparable J. D. Robb.

When young Asher Solomon is forced to take his two sisters and run for their lives from soldiers of The Colony, he knows inside he’ll likely never see his parents again. And then his sister falls, injuring her ankle, and he knows all their lives are about to change forever.

Years later, Asher is an operative with the insurgents, fighting to protect civilians from The Colony.

Now that scientists have figured out a way to rid the population of diseases and therefore lengthen lives, the echelons of society pay them to strip the desirable genes such as favored eye or hair color, intelligence, or strength from captured civilians, leaving the hostages to die horrible deaths.

Twenty years ago, a few years before my birth, scientists developed and perfected the process of gene editing in embryos, which changed the futures of the unborn population. Genomes that carried both life-threatening and non-life-threatening diseases could be altered before a fetus was born. Changing the DNA of an embryo, or germline engineering, meant genes for that disease would never be passed down to any subsequent offspring.

Subject A36- Teri Polin

Ash and his team work hard, and often endangering their lives, to protect the outliers and their families. When a terrible secret comes to light, Asher is tested in ways he never could have expected.

I’d learned that promises were like a beacon in a storm—things to cling to and place our hopes in

Subject A36- Teri Polin

There are so many layers to this story, it gripped my attention from the start and kept my interest to the end. The author created a believable- though horrifying- concept for the future of mankind. I can only hope there are brave heroes like Asher ready to save the day should this come to pass!

A must-read, I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

From the first paragraph I was hooked on this book!

She stood in Purgatory and studied death. The blood and the gore of it, the ferocity of its glee. It had come to this place with the willful temper of a child, full of heat and passion and careless brutality.

Judgement in Death- J. D. Robb

When a cop is murdered in a nightclub owned by Lieutenant Eve Dallas’ husband Roarke, it’s just the beginning of one of the most complicated cases of her career.

The investigation uncovers a web of dirty cops, drugs, money laundering, and murder orchestrated by an old associate of Roarke’s.

It was her job to wade through the debris of murder, to pick up the pieces, see where they fit, and put together a picture of the life that had been stolen. And through that picture to find the image of a killer.

Judgement in Death- J. D. Robb

Tension escalates between Eve and Roarke. Eve is determined to do her job and catch a killer, while Roarke is just as determined to protect his wife from a crazy crime boss.

While the police procedural aspect fascinated me, it was the push-pull between Dallas and Roarke that made this story unforgettable.

“The dick’s connected to the ego. It’s medical fact. Or maybe it’s the other way around.”

Judgement in Death- J. D. Robb

Because of her abusive past, Eve tends to come across as abrupt, but it’s also the reason she’s so good at her job. She’s made it her mission to rid the planet of the monsters who pray on those weaker than them. Roarke loves her even more for her dedication, but he’s also protective and it causes them to come to loggerheads in this book.

Someone is killing cops and Roarke is standing in the way of allowing Dallas to do her job- something has to give.

When a threat is made on Eve’s life, the two of them set aside their differences to pool their resources. Will they be able to uncover the truth before it’s too late?

I can’t get enough of this series!

  1. I’ve read and enjoyed all three of Teri’s books. I, too, can’t wait for the sequel to this one.

There was a time I could say I’d read everything Nora Roberts had written, but I can’t keep up with her releases. I do like her JD Robb titles. This one sounds really good.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jacquie. And best wishes with your deadline.

  2. Great reviews, Jacquie. I’ve read all of Teri’s books and thoroughly enjoyed Subject A36. I know she has been hard at work on the sequel.
I’ve never read any of the books by J.D. Robb, but I do have a few waiting in paperback on bookshelf. Looking forward to (eventually) exploring this series.

And what a great time to have a release–on your birthday! You’ll be doing double celebrating! 🙂

    1. I can’t wait to see what happens next! I think you’d enjoy the In Death series (all 54!) once you start on them, Mae. Many of the characters show up throughout the books- much like a crime series on TV.

    1. I’m not into horror, so when I saw this one in her portfolio I grabbed it up, and I’m so glad I did!
J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) is a phenomenal writer, Teagan- well worth trying!

  6. Both great reviews, Jacquie. I read most Nora Roberts books, as well as her In Death series, though I’ve stalled somewhere in the 30 some installment … I think she’s on number 50 now.
