#BookReview- Through the Nethergate by @RobertaEaton17 #Suspense

Margaret, a girl born with second sight, has the unique ability to bring ghosts trapped between Heaven and Hell back to life. When her parents die suddenly, she goes to live with her beloved grandfather, but the cellar of her grandfather’s ancient inn is haunted by an evil spirit of its own.
In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise.
With the help of her grandfather and the spirits she has befriended, Margaret sets out to defeat Hugh Bigod, only to discover he wants to use her for his own ends – to take over Hell itself.

My Review

The fight between good and evil is brought to life in this spellbinding novel!

At the sudden death of her parents, teenager Margaret travels to Bungay to live with her aging grandfather in a mysterious old inn.

Before long, Margaret begins to see spirits of people who died horrible deaths and are somehow tied to the inn and the nearby castle of Hugh Bigod. The spirits, some kind and others malicious, tell the stories of the last moments of their lives and the part a large black dog with glowing eyes took in tying them to the netherworld.

They believe Margaret is the key to their escape, but dangerous forces are out to stop her at all costs, and soon Margaret is drawn into the fight of her life.

This book is filled with historical tidbits told through the spirits point of view that I found completely fascinating. The author seamlessly integrates religious beliefs and historical data with immersive storytelling.

I give Through the Nethergate 5 lovely kisses- a fascinating read!

If you’re planning on falling in love…

When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.

you’d better be sure…

Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.

… someone is there to catch you.

Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.

My Review

When Sadie Lane sees the man she’s been stubbornly referring to as ‘Suits’ rescuing a scared, malnourished, three-legged dog outside her work she’s forced to reconsider her opinions. It doesn’t help, that he’s insanely handsome, nice, and her new dog’s co-parent.

Caleb Parker might have a genius mind when it comes to astral-physics and investment companies, but Sadie Lane leaves him feeling as tongue-tied as the awkward, lonely youth he once was. So why can’t he stay away?

This is a beautifully written tale of two people who have been unbearably hurt in the past, learning that maybe, with the right person at your back, you don’t have to stand alone.

Excerpt:

His broad shoulders and short cropped hair made him look a little dangerous and a whole lot capable. Of many things.

“What’s going on in that head of yours, Red?” He tugged on a lock of her hair and gave her a smile that shot fireworks through her blood.

“I was just thinking that I don’t want to waste the day or two I have here thinking about my brother, my dad, or anything else.”

Liam stepped closer. “Seems like you could use a little break from them.”

She laughed at his dead-on assessment. “How is it that you hardly know me and you see things other people don’t?”

In her professional life, everyone had the utmost respect for her father and brother. The dynamic duo of the fitness center world. Never mind the long days and nights and hours that Isla spent making things come together. Things like the deal with Conroy Hotels. Her father’s gyms were going to be a part of ten Conroy properties starting in the new year. Thanks to Isla. Only, no one had thanked her, except Jonathan Conroy, who she’d struck the deal with. He’d been gracious and kind. A great negotiator. He’d treated her as an equal.

“Maybe it’s because I’m looking so close,” he said, his voice lowering. Had she moved? Did he? She wasn’t sure, but the front of each of their bodies was touching, and despite the chill in the air, Isla’s skin warmed beneath her layers.

“Hmm. You are looking quite close,” she said, not intending for her voice to come out so husky.

Liam ran his thumb over her cheek, then back, down over her lower lip. Her knees went loose and she pressed her hand to his chest. It was hard and solid like the brick wall at her back. But so much hotter. With his jacket open, she pressed her hand to his soft shirt and felt the sleek muscle beneath.

“I like what I see,” he said, his face coming closer.

“Me too,” she whispered. A little too much. Could she blame her overtaxed emotions? Probably not. There was something about Liam.

The first touch of his lips pushed thoughts of anything other than him, of getting closer, out of her brain. One of his hands threaded through her hair, anchoring her where he wanted so he could slant his mouth over hers, teasing and testing, before diving all the way in.

Isla’s fingers fisted in his shirt, curling the material in her palm as she arched to get closer, to take more. Liam gentled the kiss, slowing it down before he leaned back, enough so he could speak but so they were still sharing the same air, their breath mingling and intertwining sort of like their bodies.

“Wow,” he whispered, pressing his brow to hers.

“Yeah. Wow.” Two or three days of doing exactly that didn’t seem like nearly enough.

Liam’s hands ran down her arms, back up, over her shoulders, and then he pulled her close and wrapped his around her, hugging her tight and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. Isla sank in. If she could only have a couple days with him, she was going to enjoy every second of it. Which meant blocking out all of the questions and the uncertainty.

When he pulled back, Liam’s eyes were a mix of desire and sweetness. “You like Johnny Cash?”

Isla laughed at the quick change of subject. “The Man in Black? Sure.”

“I was hoping you’d say that,” he said, taking her hand again. “Come on.”

While The Bombs Fell by Robbie Cheadle & Elsie Hancy Eaton #Memoir #BookReview @bakeandwrite

What was it like for children growing up in rural Suffolk during World War 2?
Elsie and her family live in a small double-storey cottage in Bungay, Suffolk. Every night she lies awake listening anxiously for the sound of the German bomber planes. Often they come and the air raid siren sounds signalling that the family must leave their beds and venture out to the air raid shelter in the garden.
Despite the war raging across the English channel, daily life continues with its highlights, such as Christmas and the traditional Boxing Day fox hunt, and its wary moments when Elsie learns the stories of Jack Frost and the ghostly and terrifying Black Shuck that haunts the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.
Includes some authentic World War 2 recipes

My Review

The story of life behind war zones.

Elsie is born in England during a tumultuous period in history- WWII. Her family must learn to live on rations, restricted power, blackout posters, and food stamps while still providing milk to the nearby village.

Elsie understands the threat of war. The fear of German bombers is a backdrop to an everyday life without extras, but the family still manages to enjoy simple pleasures such as summer swims, afternoon tea, and on special occasions small gifts and treats.

I found it fascinating to read the lives of those not directly involved in the war effort. The average citizens just trying to survive what must have been a frightening time. While Elsie is young, she still grasps the stress her parents are under to provide a safe, warm home for their family.

Standout lines:

Britain had been at war with Nazi Germany since 1 September 1939, and the little girl could not remember a time when the distribution of food, coal, and clothing had not been controlled. She listened for the sound of bomber planes and air raid sirens without even realising it and even possessed her own gas mask.

While the Bombs Fell- Robbie Cheadle & Elsie Hancy Eaton

The air raid shelter smelled damp and musty, and the dark felt as thick as velvet curtains before Father lit the paraffin lamp.

While the Bombs Fell- Robbie Cheadle & Elsie Hancy Eaton

This is an enlightening read about village life in wartorn times.

The perfect accompaniment to the sweet scents of spring! I read this while sitting outside with birds singing and a soft breeze tinkling the chimes. The author leads the reader on a journey through the forest around her and the way it can heal the soul.

Many of the passages are obviously personal. I could sense pain, peace, and a timeless sense of how much Ms Finn connects with the world around her.

EXCERPT:

I’m about to go forward and talk to her, but I divert from that plan as soon as I see Greg stepping up next to her. He’s blocking her from my view with his douchiness.

She said they weren’t dating at the dance. That was weeks ago, so why the hell is he still hanging around her? Why are his fingers clasping wisps of her hair? He shouldn’t be touching her.

This feeling is not sitting right with me at all. Fact is, I’ve never been jealous. Have I been a little envious of the people who go here recently? Maybe. I mean, a few months ago I used to be just like them. New clothes, shoes, going to parties, not having a care in the world. Then my mom lost her awesome job at the hospital due to cuts, Dad left, and shit just went downhill. Now, I have to make sure my mom and I don’t get kicked out of the dump we live in or have anything shut off because of the lack of funds. I’ve never been jealous of a guy dating a girl I was interested in, though. Until Adaline, and I swear this is going to be a problem. It’s already cost me my childhood home. I can’t afford to lose any more.

My fingernails dig into my palm as my hands ball into fists at my sides while I watch Adaline tip back her head and laugh. I need to get a grip. I’m losing it. This shouldn’t bother me. In fact, I shouldn’t even give a shit that they’re hanging out. Adaline and I can’t be anything.

My Review

The story touched me on so many levels!

Extreme sport journalist Noah Lake suffers a horrible injury that leaves him blind. He spends months learning to walk and talk again in the hope that his sight will return, but of course, it does not. This leaves him angry, bitter, and alone in a world he cannot see.

Juilliard graduate Charlotte Conroy is locked in mourning from the sudden death of her brother, the betrayal of her boyfriend, and the loss of her muse. The violin that once brought her such pleasure, is now a reminder of what she has lost.

These two are brought together by circumstance, and soon learn to count on each other for comfort. There are many blocks in the road to their recovery. Noah goes through black moods and suffers debilitating migraines, while Charlotte feels pressured from her well-meaning friends to audition for upcoming musical tours.

This is a story of the power of love and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

The book is divided into four categories: God bless Africa, God bless my family and friends, God bless me and God bless corporates and work. Each part is sub-divided into the good, the bad and the ugly of the two poets’ experiences, presented in rhyming verse, free-style, haiku and tanka, in each of these categories and include colourful depictions of their thoughts and emotions.

The purpose of this book of poetry is encapsulated in the following tanka and haiku poems:
What drives me to write?
To share my innermost thoughts
The answer is clear
It’s my personal attempt
To make some sense of this world.

Inspiration blossoms
Like the unfurling petals
Of the Desert Rose

My Review

Open a New Door is an emotional tour de force!

South Africa is a mysterious part of the world many of us will never have the opportunity to visit. Robbie and Kim have brought the best, and in some cases saddest, snapshots of the country they love to life through the magic of poetry.

One of my favorites- Some people by Robbie Cheadle

Some people mark this imperfect world, just by being, make it a better place, encouraging, selfless and enthusiastic, they’re a buffer against the rat race.

Some people evolve into human hubs, knowing everyone – friends with all, able to link you up with someone, to help you stand proud and tall.

Some people have enormous hearts, that seem to beat outside their body, touching everything around them, tinging with goodness the weak and shoddy.

Some people mould our minds and spirits, forging new thought patterns that inspire, following in such worthy footsteps, Becomes our ambition and desire.

God calls some people back to him, before we are ready, or want, them to go, as we pick ourselves up and go on – alone,

His guidance in our actions will show.

Cheadle, Robbie. Open a new door: a collection of poems (Kindle Locations 497-502). Roberta Writes. Kindle Edition.

More than the poetry, is the beating heart of a country in turmoil- poignant and beautiful.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About LOVERS AT HEART, REIMAGINED:

Discover the magic of New York Times bestseller Melissa Foster’s writing, and see why millions of readers have fallen in love with the Bradens.

A Note From The Author:
Treat Braden and Max Armstrong’s love story is the beginning of my beloved Braden series and introduces you to some of my favorite characters, and to a family that has become so real to me, they’re always by my side. If you are already a fan of the Love in Bloom big-family romance collection, you may have read Treat and Max’s original story, Lovers at Heart. For the past several years, I have had the nagging feeling that there was more to Treat and Max’s story than I had originally thought. One of the greatest things about being a writer is the ability to reimagine worlds and create new stories. I wanted to give Treat and Max a more mature story without losing the essence of who they are. This is Treat and Max’s story, reimagined, and I hope you love it as much as I do.

In LOVERS AT HEART, REIMAGINED…

Treat Braden wasn’t looking for love when Max Armstrong walked into his Nassau resort, but he saw right through the efficient and capable facade she wore like a shield to the sweet, sensual woman beneath. One magnificent evening together sparked an intense connection, and for the first time in his life Treat wanted more than a casual affair. But something caused Max to turn away, and now, after weeks of unanswered phone calls and longing for the one woman he cannot have, Treat is going back to his family’s ranch to try to finally move on.

A chance encounter brings Treat and Max together again, and it turns into a night of intense passion and honesty. When Max reveals her secret, painful past, Treat vows to do everything within his power to win Max’s heart forever—including helping her finally face her demons head-on.

Excerpt

“Hey, Max, look!” Chaz waved across the street to Treat and his beautiful companion. “Treat! Over here. Hey, buddy. How are you?”

Oh no. No, no, no. This could not be happening. Max turned away, frantically running through excuses to hightail it out of there. Sick? Need to go help the crew. Lighting, yeah, that could work. She turned with her excuse at the ready, opening her mouth to speak. Treat’s eyes locked on hers, and her mouth went dry.

“Chaz, Max, how are you?” Treat asked in that deep, sexy voice that made her legs turn to wet noodles.

Chaz said something, but it was all she could do to stare at the woman who had her hand on Treat’s shoulder. She was gorgeous, with a friendly smile. Of course she had a friendly smile. She had Treat! Max hated thegreen-eyed monster clinging to her shoulders. She wasn’t used to it, and she didn’t like the way it made her feel.

“Hi. I’m Savannah.” The woman extended her hand in greeting.

Savannah. What kind of name is that? She must be a model or something with those long legs and slim body. Max looked at Treat in his expensive suit and finely pressed shirt. Then she glanced down at her own less-than-glamorous attire. She absently touched her efficient ponytail, and cringed.

“Hi. I’m Chaz Crew.” He shook Savannah’s hand. “And this is Max Armstrong.”

Max gave Savannah’s hand a quick shake and tried her best to smile, then buried her nose in her planner before the woman—or Treat—could strike up a conversation.

While Chaz and Savannah talked, Treat moved to her side, bringing a wave of the spicy, masculine cologne she smelled in her dreams. “Max. How have you been?”

Too frazzled to face him, she kept her eyes trained on her planner. “Fine, thanks.”

“I’m glad we ran into each other. I’ve been thinking about Nassau.”

Giving me that look wasn’t enough? You needed to flaunt another woman in front of me just to show me what I already know? That you could have anyone you want?

“Max,” he said a little quieter. “I’m sorry for what happened there.”

She wanted to dislike him, to run away and never look back, because that look he’d given her had been too reminiscent of the ex-boyfriend she’d spent years trying to forget. But the sincerity in his voice brought her gaze to his, and Treat was looking at her like he had in Nassau, as if she was all he saw. Memories tumbled in, one after another—their incredible kisses, the feel of his strong arms around her, his sweet whispers in her ear…

Those intimate memories were like an addictive cocktail, and she reveled in their intoxicating sweetness. She should not be thinking about them, or how different things might have been if she had woken up in hisarms the next morning. And he should not be looking at her like that when he was with his ridiculously gorgeous girlfriend.

Unwilling to put herself in a position to be hurt again, and hanging on to that resolve by a thread, Max said, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Hurt and confusion rose in his eyes, fraying that thread to near breaking.

“Come on, Treat,” Savannah urged. “Let’s get some coffee and catch up.”

Treat held Max’s gaze a beat too long, and she felt her cheeks flush with desire. She wanted to tell him it was okay—even though it wasn’t—to take his handsome face between her hands, and kiss his luscious lips one more time. Why were her feelings for him so overwhelming? She’d never believed in love at first sight, and certainly not with a man who could be so quick to judge her, but her heart was racing the way it had the first time she’d seen him in Nassau.

“Treat?” Savannah’s eyes darted curiously between Treat and Max.

“Right,” Treat said sharply. “Max, may I call you?”

How can you ask me that with your girlfriend standing right there?

“You have a date with Dad, remember?” Savannah said in a singsong voice.

“Dad?” The word slipped from Max’s lips before she had a chance to stop it.

“Yes. I’m here to visit with my father,” Treat said. “Savannah hijacked me on the way to his ranch.”

There was that look again. Not the one he’d given her, but the way he looked lovingly at Savannah. “Nothing like being hijacked by a beautiful woman,” Max said a little too snarkily. Jealousy was not a pretty thing.

Amusement rose in Treat’s eyes. “She’s beautiful, yes, but she’s also my younger sister.”

Savannah crinkled her nose at him in a cute, sisterly way. “He’s so not my type, all suited up and proper. Hey, Max, why don’t you and Chaz join us for coffee?”

Max was too embarrassed about her misconception and was still struggling with too many emotions to be clear-headed. “I have to be on-site to field any problems that come up, and I have so much to do—”

“Go, Max. You deserve the break,” Chaz urged. “She works like a maniac sunup till sundown. Max, just keep your earpiece on in case there’s an emergency.” He turned to the others and said, “Sorry, guys. I appreciate the offer, but I’ve got to run to a meeting. Max, don’t forget to ask Joey about that sign when you have a chance.”

She watched Chaz walk away and quickly remembered the list of excuses she’d already thought up. “I actually have some lighting issues that I need to attend to.”

“Are you sure?” Savannah arched a brow in her brother’s direction.

“Max, I would be honored if you’d join us.”

The disappointment in Treat’s expression was palpable. She was this close to changing her mind. Every bit of her—especially those naughty parts that she was trying so hard to ignore—screamed, Yes! Yes! Go! But Max was too confused by his showing up and his apology to think straight. “I’m sorry, but I really can’t.”

Treat took her hand and brought it to his lips. She closed her eyes as his lips warmed her skin, bringing another rush of emotions.

“May I call you?” Treat asked again.

Still lost in that single kiss, thinking about what she’d like him to kiss next, Max had to shake her head to pull herself back to the conversation. She tapped her earpiece, hoping to pass off her zoning out as a technical issue. She was acting like those brainless bimbos she hated. Max couldn’t believe Treat was laying it on so thick in front of his sister, but maybe Savannah was used to seeing this side of him. He was a billionaire who owned properties all over the world. He probably treated all single women this way.

If she believed that, why was she tearing a piece of paper from her planner and writing her phone number on it? And why was she staring at his butt as he walked away, hoping he’d call?

I’m in so much trouble.

“Who hired you?”

Fran snorted. “Come now, Darren. You and I both know I am not going to answer that.”

“You will.”

She sighed. “You’re being ridiculous.”

“There is nothing wrong with demanding answers.” He waggled the point of his knife at her.

She still didn’t flinch. “Are you going to torture me? Is that what you do now? Torment women because your ego is bruised?”

“The last time I tortured someone, it was with my tongue, and as I recall, you screamed for more.”

A slight flare of her nostrils showed that she remembered what he spoke of. There was no mistaking the slight hint of pink in her cheeks. She never could hide her blushes, especially when aroused.

She still wants me, too? Heat flashed through him followed by an instant cold bucket of don’t-fall-for-it-you-idiot. This wasn’t real.

“You need to let me go. You don’t know what you’re doing. My surveillance of you was standard industry business. You, of all people, should understand that.”

Yes, Darren knew all about espionage, especially that of companies and people. But who was behind it of late? Who kept laying traps and trying to kill the people trained at his academy?

Here’s a short excerpt where news reporter, Julie Crenshaw is left with a moral dilemma, her job or possible lives lost?

“Have you talked to your cop boyfriend about any of this?”

His glance made her uncomfortable. She swiped her cup out from beside his elbow before he bumped it to the floor, and strode to the single cup brewer she’d treated herself to when she got the job offer.

“He’s not my boyfriend, and no, I haven’t. Yet.”

Ron stood and moved to her side, towering at least six inches over her head. If he were into intimidation his linebacker body, tattooed arms, and enigmatic eyes would deter most people, but she knew he wasn’t like that. For all his cynicism, Ron was a good guy.

“You can’t, Jules.”

She stiffened. Her nickname on another man’s lips instead of Mike’s still had the power to bring her to her knees.

“This story could be our big break,” he carried on, unaware he’d just set off a bomb in her heart. “Look, I’m not saying we don’t tell your… friend. I’m just saying we could pick the time.”

He wanted her to sit on what could be the story of a lifetime. But if she did, and someone else died…

What was she going to do?

My Review

This book travels from present day to the beginning of Cobbs and Thane’s career and friendship in the Navy SEALs. It’s also the love story of Marg Stines and Patrick Cobbs.

For me, this story had the feeling of The Notebook. We start with Patrick’s death and then Waters takes us back to Marg as a young woman defying her family’s wishes of a strategic wedding to live her dream of becoming a model.

Then she meets Patrick and knows he’s The One.

This is not a unicorns and rainbows kind of love story, it’s real, gritty, heartbreaking, and beautiful.

I give Code Name: Forever and Ever 5 lovely kisses- Highly recommended!

My Review:

I love Virginia Kantra’s ability to bring her settings to stunning life. When reading her Dare Island books it’s easy to imagine the sand and surf, the homes and businesses, and the people who live there.

I also enjoy her characterizations, especially the male characters.

Gabe is sardonic, untrusting, and withdrawn, but he also shows a depth of caring and love that instantly tugs at my reader’s heart.

Jane has already been through a painful divorce from an abusive ex, and is in no hurry to make the same mistake again. I liked her tenacity and strength of character- she’s determined to make a good life for her son, and not count on any man to make that happen. Even if her heart says she can trust the man stirring up a rush of emotions, from tenderness, to desire, and if she dare admit it-love.

Favorite lines:

The bakery breathed around them, releasing the warm scent of vanilla, rich chocolate, and pungent coffee. The hunger stirring his gut became a throb. He wanted to take a bite of something.

Someone. Jane.

ONE LINE FRIDAY

It’s been a much better week for me. I’ve had some positive feedback on my WIP. My dog, who is away at ‘Be good or else’ school, is doing well, settling in better than expected.

I read a couple of wonderful books from two of my favourite authors, Sarah Mayberry, and Kelly Hunter. They’re from the Montana Born Brides series. I highly recommend them.

On the local front, the strawberries are ripening,

The roses are blooming,

And summer is here, 🙂

My pick for One line friday follows this theme, here it is,

Excitement coursed through his veins, the war between man and nature never more clear to him as fate rushed up to meet him, and he laughed.

Okay gang, your turn. Show me what you’ve got.
