End of April #BookReviews with Lincoln Child, @AshleyCWeaver @Sandra_Cox plus #family Reconnecting

I can’t believe it’s the end of April already! It seems as though the older I get, the quicker time flies.

My daughter arrived Tuesday night after taking a wrong turn and adding six hours to her trip. It’s been almost five years since we’ve seen her, so I’m a bit emotional, as you can imagine. She’s only here until Friday, then she and my grandson will be leaving. After having him with us for the last seven months the house is going to seem empty.

I guess it will give me more time to read some of the amazing books I’ve downloaded lately, and maybe even get some writing done- gasp!

I’ve been on a mystery kick with my reading lately, and enjoyed all of the following stories.

The dig site is in the middle of the Sudd, an almost impenetrable bog that grows larger by the day.

Logan approached the hole and peered in gingerly. It was at least eight feet in diameter. He could see the brownish-green surface of the Sudd not eighteen inches beneath his feet. Its miasmic vapor rose like a fetid breath to his nostrils.

When unexplained occurrences begin to happen with increasing frequency, it is up to Logan to investigate the causes, and determine whether an evil being has been released to kill them all, or if the culprit is very much alive.

This is an interesting read, filled with facts surrounding Egyptology and ancient relics. The tension slowly escalates as the crew get closer to the treasure, and I found myself on edge more than once.

An enthralling read!

The first in the Electra McDonnell series from Edgar-nominated author Ashley Weaver, set in England during World War II, A Peculiar Combination is a delightful mystery filled with spies, murder, romance, and the author’s signature wit.

When war breaks out, earning a living becomes hard, so Ellie McDonnell and her uncle do what they must in order to keep food on their plates- they break into homes and rob safes. That is, until they are caught by a stoic major with an agenda of his own.

Major Ramsey is tasked with stopping a critical set of blueprints from getting into enemy hands, and if that means using his substantial clout the pull in a couple of safecrackers, he will. But he doesn’t expect to be intrigued by the spirited Electra McDonnell and soon finds himself in a compromising situation with the thief.

A dead German spy, missing blueprints, and a host of suspects made this a page-turning read with a surprise twist I didn’t see coming!

I love Ellie’s humor in the face of danger, and the hint of a love triangle adds an extra edge to already fascinating characters. This series is one to watch!

Mateo and Jesse are cautiously working their way back to friendship when Jesse discovers the unthinkable. Delilah, the sultry shifter who’d had affairs with both men, is still alive.

While Mateo and his chief deputy, Blair, are moving forward with their romantic relationship, trouble is brewing in Grizzly. A senior on the Blackfoot Reservation is murdered- his throat ripped open by a feral creature of the night, and the Chief of Police, Jesse, is afraid the woman he thought he loved is behind the attack. He’s still coming to terms with the fact his blood-brother and estranged best friend, Mateo, is a shifter and had a torrid affair with Layla, or Delilah as she was known by then, and that she, too, can shift to wolf form.

How had he not seen her true nature? He shook his head. The answer simple. He’d been blinded by the sex. Layla, or Delilah as Mateo knew her by, was the most sensual creature he’d ever known. How much of it was truly her and how much was due to her supernatural powers, he had no idea.

And what difference did it make? Evil was evil.

Instead of being dead, as Mateo and Jesse thought, Delilah is back and more powerful than ever. When she threatens the community and comes after Blair, silver bullets seem to be the only way to halt the carnage.

She half-shifted. A beautiful woman with wanton black curls falling around her bare shoulders and white breasts. She rose on her back paws her tail waving. Horror washed through him. Beads of cold sweat stood out on his forehead and ice chilled his bones.

“Jesse.”

He raised the gun.

“Oh darling. Do you really think you can kill me with puny bullets?” She gave a gay laugh.

I was thrilled to see the continuation of Mateo’s story published, and though the focus is on Jesse in this story, the rest of Grizzly’s characters play a large part with plenty of humorous exchanges to lighten the grim storyline. Short, descriptive lines increase depth and build tension toward a combustible finale.

This is a highly recommended supernatural suspense series!

  1. I feel for your daughter with her six-hour wrong turn! A badly signed detour once did something similar to me. Some great reads here, Jacquie, and great reviews. I a fan of Lincoln Child and have read a few of his books. I’ll have to take a look at the others.

  5. Jackie, how wonderful to have your daughter there and your grandson. Your poor daughter—a six hour detour! YIKES! I bet she was never so glad to reach your home!!

    All three books sound wonderful. I’ve read The Third Gate and was glued to the pages. I don’t follow that series as closely as Pendergast, but I’ve enjoyed all the books I’ve read featuring Dr. Logan.

    I haven’t tried any of Lincoln Child without his partner in crime:) Pun intended;) But the HH and I are plowing our way through the Pendergast series. Thanks for the recommendation. A Peculiar Combination sounds very intriguing too.

  9. Oh my, Jacquie, taking a wrong turn that resulted in an extra six hours to a journey is rather unfortunate to say the least. I am glad she arrived okay and you are spending some time with her and your grandson. Well done on there three books, they all sound good. Another WWII book I noted. Sandra’s books always get great reviews.

    1. We’ve been having real issues with ferry service to the island which contributed to her delayed arrival, Jan. Yes, I’m going to be lost without him (Papa, too).

  12. It’s funny how we go through phases in what we read. Mysteries are one of my go-to genres. I’m very happy that you’ve had this time with your family. Five years—no wonder you’re emotional. I’m heading out on Monday to visit each of my three older brothers, who are thoroughly scattered around the country. One of us in each time zone—can you imagine?

      All three of these were great reads. Sandra has a talent for blending action/suspense with heart-fluttering romance that I love 🙂

        1. Yeah, she only had three days before she had to get back. She’s trying to get in on a professorial course somewhere, so I’m not sure when we’ll see them again. Thank goodness for technology!
          I have Catling’s Bane on my Kindle, and hope to get to it soon 🙂

  16. I’m happy to know your daughter and grandson are home safely. You have a big adjustment to make in your life now. But isn’t technology a miracle helping us to keep close to loved ones far away. Now if we only had smell-a-vision and hug technology! Really enjoyed Sandra’s book. Great combination of action and romance.
