My Review

Jack Bass is my kind of hero!

Jack is injured and on the road to a rocky recovery in the start of this military suspense story. His doctor, friends and daughter decide a trip away might help him recover his memory, but instead it only exasperates the PTSD he’s suffered since a botched rescue of kidnapped vets in a previous book.

Soon, the group stumble upon a terrorist organization and stop an attempted bombing, but not without consequences.

This was an enjoyable read, though a bit confusing at first. I would recommend reading the series in order to get the full context of the story.

I give Do I Know You? 4 lovely kisses

Biography

Sharon is a librarian who once studied dress design in the couture houses of Paris and now writes novels of adventure, suspense, and love. She’s a wife, mother of twins, caretaker of Donut the one-eyed dog, and addicted to Oreos.

Her Deadly Force books are a romantic suspense series where ex-Green Berets and sexy, smart heroines redeem Shakespeare’s greatest love stories.

My Review

The Historian and the mercenary!

I’ve anxiously waited for book 2 in the Deadly Force series and was thrilled to see this on my Kindle on release day.

First, I have to mention that cover. It’s like the skies opened and wept for the angel below. Moody and beautiful, the image hints at the story’s southern location, suspenseful genre, and ringing endorsement from Allison Brennan.

The story carries on two weeks after book 1- Every Deep Desire- with Major Nate Walker on the search for answers to why his Green Beret team was set up and court marshalled before being dishonorably discharged.

Sarah Munro isn’t sure why the handsome Nate keeps showing up just when she needs him most, but with danger growing every which way she turns, she’s grateful for his protection. If only she could trust that he didn’t have his own agenda.

As two deadly enemies close ranks on the historian, Nate must make a lose or lose decision- one that could cost him his men or the woman he loves.

Favorite Line

Nate sat higher against the headboard and smelled peppermint. Doc Bennett had taken off Nate’s shirt to rub salve on his arms, and now he smelled like a damn breath mint.

Wray, Sharon. One Dark Wish (Deadly Force) . Sourcebooks. Kindle Edition.

If you like alpha heroes and damsels with a backbone you’ll love One Dark Wish!

Chasing Fireflies by @AuthorClaudia_B/ #Romance #Reading @XpressoReads

Chasing Fireflies
Claudia Y. Burgoa
Publication date: September 9th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

USA Today Bestselling author Claudia Burgoa brings you an emotional and inspirational story that will tug on your heartstrings.

The first time I met Oliver Tanner he was five years old.
I was four.
That day he was entrusted to my keep.
He was as large and loud as a church mouse.
That day I taught him how fireflies were magic with the persistence of a person.
That’s what I loved about them.
No matter how far they strayed,
they remembered where they came from and who their family was.

After high school, he joined the army and left Knox Ridge.

Years later, the town had changed.
My dreams were shattered.
We had nothing left.
I had forgotten all about the magic of the fireflies.
Until he came back to town.
Everything about him was comforting.
He brought some light to my darkness,
But I knew the light could only last for so long.
Fireflies only stay for the summer.
He had outgrown our small town.
It was time for me to stop chasing fireflies.

Don’t miss out on this stunning, second-chance friends to lovers romance.

This full-length novel was originally published in the Cards of Love collection as a novella. It has been revised with additional scenes.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

I decide to bring up Ollie, preferring to deal with that than the topic of my sister.

“Did you hear that Oliver Tanner is back in town?”

She squints. “Why does that name sound familiar?”

“Josey Tanner’s son,” I say, unamused by her attitude.

Paige wrinkles her nose. “Little Ollie AWOL? Showing his face back here? That idiot?”

I hate when she refers to him as that. I hold back a frustrated groan. I don’t need more reminders of how he left me here—embarrassed and heartbroken.

It’s not like they were friends or anything, I think sarcastically. Then again, she’s always the first person to remind me that he broke my heart—twice.

“Yeah, that one,” I say dryly, regretting the subject. “He’s staying at the old Tanner place while he decides what to do with his life.”

“He’s going to f*** up my hydrangeas, isn’t he?” Paige says.

“So not the point,” I say.

“Is he as hot as I remember him?” she asks.

I smirk. Oliver is good looking. He has tousled brown hair, which is thick and lustrous. His eyes are a mesmerizingly deep brown, and flecks of amber light dance throughout them. Like fireflies. His face is strong and well defined. His features look like they were molded from granite. He has thick eyebrows, which slopes downward in a severe expression.

My stomach does a few flips as I remember his playful smile. My body shivers, remembering the tingles that his strong hands created when they touched me. They were rough but warm. And when those beefy arms wrapped around my body, it felt perfect.

His body was toned and inviting as he hugged me. Everything about him was comforting. His voice was deep and rich. We saw each other a couple of days ago, but I’m still thinking about him.

Sacrifice: Part 2 by Nicole Morgan
Ever Since she entered the picture, his mission has changed.
Eddie Peterson’s mission had been to take down the nearly untouchable
drug lord, Rojas. Years of being underground, with no protection from
his country, he is left to fight off the cartel on his own. It was a
job he thought he could handle.
With Marissa Rojas nothing is simple. The only daughter of a ruthless drug
lord leaves little opportunity for a wholesome upbringing. Her life
is complicated and thanks to her bodyguard, Eddie, things are about
to get a whole lot tougher.
Now, it is no longer Eddie’s mission that is in jeopardy. It is their
very lives.
Operation Undercover by Krista Ames
Don’t get caught under the covers.
Killing Me Softly by Deelylah Mullin
With only gunfire and each other to keep them company, can Jorden and Luke
save the innocents without complicating things?
When Jorden Mane met Luke Garrett, there weren’t wedding bells ringing,
choirs singing, nor fireworks exploding—unless you consider the
gunfire. But, as she got to know the mysterious man behind the stoic
facade, she fell for him. Hard.
But, it didn’t matter. They needed to get to find El Capitan—the
mastermind behind the decimation of the small villages they’d
encountered.
As Luke Garrett used his special ops training to defeat the bad guys, he
sensed a familiarity in the attacks—like they were the plans of a
previous mission leader or commanding officer.
Which made him shudder at every turn.
It also made him have to think outside-the-box with regard to defensive
tactics.
All of it made his head spin, but the constant was Jordan. He didn’t
know when or how it happened, but he’d grown to care for her.
Which was a bad, bad thing when they were on the outskirts of the law.
Will Jordan and Luke make it through the next siege? Can they keep their
feelings for one another out of the mix? Or will passion fuel the
flames of their survival?
Dogs of Fortune by Joanne Jaytanie
The Baker Corp. has recruited Blair Sellick, a nationally known dog
trainer with truly phenomenal skills, to provide exceptional training
for service dogs. The project would supply highly intelligent animals

The answer has disappeared along with Blair, her fellow dog trainers, and
all the dogs.
Ex-SEAL and canine handler Zane Kelly is done with war, with dogs, and with
the Soldiers of Fortune. Coerced, cajoled, and eventually intrigued,
Zane finally capitulates to the Soldiers of Fortune recruiters for
just one project, to find Blair Sellick. The mission is clear, the
dog trainers are dying, and nobody has heard from Blair for weeks.
Zane has failed only one mission, and that failure cost his canine
partner Axel his life.
This time Zane has no intention of leaving anyone behind.

I gave my heart to a Navy SEAL.
He took it with him to his grave.
Eleven years later, ignoring the yawning void is as automatic as breathing. Working brutal hours, dating a comfortably commitment-phobic guy, hanging with my best friends. Anything until exhaustion—or an extra glass of wine—claims my consciousness.

My neighbor’s handsome, enigmatic son invades my comfort zone.
He says he’s a tattoo artist. But Anderson Hawkins’ piercing green eyes, mastery of the short answer, weird schedule, and military ink tell a different story.
His touch ignites a long-dead flame inside me. A flame I’m afraid to examine too closely, even as I’m drawn to its heat.

Anderson

I retired from Delta Force
Now I work at a high-intelligence security agency
But working undercover isn’t the adrenaline rush it used to be.
For one thing, my Mom’s illness shifted my priorities to finding a way to save her. For another, her neighbor next door, whose prickly defenses belie the unflinchingly caring heart underneath, has slipped under my skin. Now my mission is to convince her it’s safe to unlock her heart. Because I’m ready to give her mine.

Note: This contemporary romance contains a wary, overworked doctor who’s a military widow in every way but name, an ex-military hero accustomed to treading dangerous ground, brought together by a few unexpected twists and turns—and maybe the machinations of a cute dog.

Goodreads / Amazon

Insta_FoundYou

EXCERPT:

Julian wanted to rewind the clock.

Go back to the hilltop where they last made love in the rain. Or go back even further, to the day they first met. Maybe

things would be so different now. The one woman who had helped him with his brokenness, healed the deep scars of his heart and awakened his dark soul now needed to be fixed.

Agony.

The only thing Julian felt was pure hopelessness and he wanted to jump off the ledge. The lead of guilt weighed down his stomach and fire raged within him. His blood-soaked cargo pants and dried blood on his hands were reminders of the fucked-up rescue and recovery that had gone completely wrong.

Waiting.

That’s all he could do. Time had no place within the sterile white walls of the hospital. Minutes felt like hours and hours felt like an eternity. Julian paced the laminate floors of the long corridor as the blur of nurses that passed by him started to make him dizzy.

Julian’s boots moved him into the waiting room. He leaned against the doorjamb and scanned the room. Sam’s head lowered, face in his hands as Sage’s arm comforted him. Ezra and Olinda, their foreheads touching, embraced one another for support and comfort.

Guilt stirred in his chest when his eyes met Phoebe’s. Julian swal‐ lowed the lump in his throat and slightly shook his head, sending her unspoken apologies.

Phoebe rose from her chair and put her arms around him. She pulled back slightly and framed his face, wiped a tear that escaped his eye.

“This isn’t your fault,” Phoebe said, her red-rimmed eyes filled with tears.

He shut his eyes. “I fucked up, Phoebe.”

“Hey, look at me. Chloe is the strongest person I know.” Phoebe choked back a sob. They stared at each other for a beat until a soft smile pulled at Phoebe’s lips. “I need you to be strong for her.”

“I can’t lose her… I just found her.”

A momentary silence overlaid the small waiting room. Julian anticipated the doctor’s forthcoming final words. Even now, they tore at him like bear claws shredding his skin. He reached in his pocket, pulled out the turtle charm necklace he had picked up from the shed before getting in the ambulance. Julian stared at the trinket for a moment, hating the lump forming in his throat and the tears blurring his vision. He so badly wanted to see Chloe.

Parallel images collided of Amber and Chloe, knocking his breath loose. The doctor’s words that came out… ‘I’m so sorry for your loss’ hammered his heart when they couldn’t save Amber.

He prayed he wouldn’t hear those same words again. He sent up a silent prayer hoping for some kind of sign that Chloe was going to come out of this.

He needed to remind himself to breathe, to stay strong for her. But it was almost impossible when the woman he loved more than his own life was fighting for her very own. His head pounded as images of her brittle body, the bang of the gun firing one last time, then Chloe falling to the ground—all played in a loop, over and over.

Julian put the necklace back in his front pocket. “Don’t you dare die on me, Chloe,” Julian whispered to himself, letting out a deep breath he didn’t realize he’d held in his lungs.

My Review

Captain John West has come through a traumatizing injury and wants nothing more than to hold the woman he left behind six years ago- except she’s moved on and is married to another man.

Ava loved John more than life and it destroyed her when he never came home. She had no means of learning what happened and after five long years, began to rebuild her life. She meets Eric, who instantly falls for the heartbroken woman, and slowly learns to love again.

Then John comes home.

P.R. whiz Julianne Tilden is recommended by her new S-I-L, Ava, to help a returning military hero handle a tsunami of unwanted publicity. She knows he’s only accepting because of Ava and her brother is less than happy with the situation, but this client could make her career. And then she meets Captain Grumpy (as she labels him) and is hit with a cocktail of emotions- empathy for all he’s suffered, thankfulness that he took down the person responsible for thousands of lives, and an unwanted attraction she fights to ignore.

The Navy is justifiably proud of their soldier and spares no expense for the publicity tour that will throw John and Julianne into a spotlight neither are prepared for.

This book gave me the tingles! I hurt for John and Ava (though she’s trying to move on) and Julianne, thrust into the middle of an impossible situation falling for the one guy guaranteed to rip her family apart.

I want to give One Year Home 5 lovely kisses, but there was a bit too much repetition of John’s angst over losing Ava to make this a homerun for me.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Excerpt

She took in a deep breath. “We need to talk.”

“About…?”

“Your role with the CDC, and whatever it was you were doing in Afghanistan after…”

She wanted him gone. He could tell by the closed off expression on her face and the slightly lifted set of her chin. She expected him to fight her. Was waiting for it. Braced for it.

It set off an emotional bomb deep in his chest and woke the pissed off protector inside him. The one who wanted to grab hold of her, kiss her until she looked at him with the world in her eyes again. He would not let anyone hurt her, not even himself.

Some of it must have shown on his face, because she backed up a couple of steps.

If she got any whiter, she was going to faint.

He slid closer to her and said with all the softness he could muster, “You look like you just took a gut-shot. So, I’m going to ask this again. What happened?”

“Two men from the Justice Department met me at the airport last night. They wanted me to go with them to give them a statement about the incident in Afghanistan.” She put air quotes around the word incident. “They were very unfriendly when I said no.”

“They’re supposed to be assholes, that’s part of what they do—put the fear of God into people.” He sidled another step closer, within reaching distance. “A lot of sh…stuff happened that day.”

They’d survived more than one attempt to kill them that day.

He’d fallen in love with her that day.

And the next day…she’d run from him.

The memory combined with the ache of healing bones in his chest, creating a caustic mix of concrete plugging up his lungs.

The struggle to breathe made him stop and think past the pain, past the panic.

Wait a second… It had been nine years. They’d given all the reports, statements, and evidence right after the incident. Why the fuck would anyone need anything from either of them now?

Something about what she said sank in.

“They wanted you to go with them?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

“Yes.” Her gaze was angry, confused, and…sad.

His stomach dropped in a sickening rush and the world spun in place for a long second. “Why didn’t you?”

“I couldn’t. The Drill Sergeant was picking me up for an emergency meeting with the CDC director, who wanted a report on my briefings in Washington. DS told the two agents exactly how they could go fuck themselves. They tried to intimidate him physically, but, well, you can imagine how that went.”

“He raised his voice?”

“He ripped them apart so badly security came to see what all the fuss was about. The two men left after promising things would get tougher for me.”

The dizziness retreated.

He was going to kiss that old man when he saw him next.

“I need to make a call.” He grabbed his phone and punched in the numbers to a buddy of his in the Justice Department. A minute later, he had his answer.

“No one from the Justice Department was sent to interview you or bring you in.” He saw his own hand shaking. Someone had tried to take her. In a public place. In front of any number of witnesses.

Who the fuck could be that brazen?

“What?” she stared at him, her brows furrowed.

“Someone tried to take you.” There was a snarl in his voice he couldn’t suppress. “Someone almost got you.”

When he caught up with that someone, he was going to rip the fucker’s guts out.

Chapter 2

Julianne

He’s so scary looking that it’s all I can do not to shrivel up in a ball or bolt for the door to get away from him. If I’d run into him on the street, I would’ve moved out of his way so there’d be no chance of coming into contact with him. And that’s not like me at all. I talk to everyone I encounter, which drives my brothers crazy. They swear I’m going to end up dead one of these days because I’m too friendly to strangers.

I can’t help it. That’s just how I am. But this stranger is different, and I quickly realize he’s not about to do anything to make this easier for me. He’s also incredibly handsome, but I barely notice that. The scary requires my full attention.

Muncie breaks the uncomfortable silence by clearing his throat. “Captain John West, meet Julianne Tilden.”

Mustering courage and determination to get through this with my professionalism intact even if I’m quaking on the inside, I take several steps forward and extend my hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Captain West. Thank you for your service.”

He shakes my hand and offers a brusque nod as he lowers himself carefully onto a love seat. “Have a seat.”

I take one of the straight-back chairs that faces the love seat.

Muncie produces a take-out cup of coffee, cream containers, sugar and fake sugar. “Wasn’t sure if you drank coffee or how you take it.”

He seems very sweet, and I offer him a warm smile, greatly relieved that he’s there in case the scary captain decides to go postal on me. “Thanks. I can’t function without it.”

“You and the captain have that in common,” Muncie says with a pointed look for John as if to say, Get your head out of your ass and be nice.

At least I hope that’s the message he’s sending, because it would be very nice if he would get his head out of his ass and be nice.

I stir cream and sugar substitute into my coffee. “What can I do for you, Captain West?” He’s not going to make it easy for me? I can play that game, too.

“Deal with the bullshit.”

“You’re going to need to be more specific, I’m afraid.” I take a sip of the coffee and thank God once again for whoever thought it would be a good idea to dump hot water over ground cocoa beans. Did they know at the time what a service they were doing for all of mankind?

“I’m getting killed with calls from the media. Everyone wants interviews. They want me to write a book. One company asked me to model underwear for them. It’s nonstop and totally insane, and I can’t deal with it.”

“How are they contacting you?”

“Somehow, they got my personal cell number.” As he says those words, a phone on the coffee table vibrates with an incoming call. “That’ll be the first of at least a hundred calls today.”

“Well, that won’t work. Do you mind if I take the phone and manage the calls for you?”

He hesitates, glancing at the phone with such yearning that I feel my heart soften toward him.

“I’ll get you a new one and make sure she has the new number,” Muncie says.

That’s all the captain needs to hear. “Take it. It’s all yours.”

I take the phone off the coffee table. “Does it have a code?”

“Zero five twenty-five.”

I write that down in the notebook that’s always with me. I sleep with it under my pillow. It has all the most important information about my clients in it. My siblings make fun of my notebook, but a lot of the details contained in there are ultrasensitive, and I’d never keep them on a smart phone that can easily be hacked. We had a seminar at work about that topic last year. It scared the crap out of me and everyone I work with. Quite a few of us have switched to paper and pen since then.

Captain John West is my only client at the moment. The powers that be at the firm were so excited to land him that they bent over backwards to get coverage for all my other clients so I can give the man of the moment my full attention. After ten minutes in his presence, I want to give him back.

But I won’t do that for two reasons. One, everyone who is anyone in my business would literally kill to be me right now, and two, Ava asked me to take care of him, so I will. I adore Ava. She’s made my brother Eric happier than he’s ever been, and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for her. This is a big deal to her—John is a big deal to her. She was in love with the guy for eight years, more than six of them spent wondering where he was while hoping he would return to her.

By the time he did, she was in love with Eric and they were planning a life together. I know how hard it was for her to see John again after all that time. I can’t for the life of me imagine what it must’ve been like for him to hear she’d found someone else and was engaged to be married.

“Why are you staring at me?” he asks gruffly, startling me.

I realize, to my horror, that I had in fact been staring at him. “Sorry,” I mutter.

He rubs his face. “Did I cut myself shaving again, Muncie?”

“Not this time, sir.”

“I, um, I apologize. I didn’t mean to stare.”

“So you said.” He seems to return the rudeness by taking the opportunity to blatantly stare at me.

I try not to wither under the glare of the most intense blue eyes I’ve ever seen, but I wilt a tiny bit waiting to find out what fresh hell he has in store for me next. “You sure I didn’t cut myself shaving, Muncie?”

The lieutenant commander laughs. “Nope. All good.”

I glance at the captain and note that his scowl has softened somewhat, not into what anyone would call a smile, but perhaps the starting of one.

“Your brother married my Ava.”

And there it is, the proverbial elephant in the room. “Yes, he did.”

“What’s he like?”

Oh, for God’s sake. I hadn’t expected him to ask me that and have no idea what to say.

“Is that a hard question? I take it you’ve known him awhile.”

“All my life, in fact.”

He leans forward, full of intensity and quiet rage. That’s the only way I can think of to describe the vibe coming from him.

“Captain…” Muncie’s word of warning goes ignored.

“He’s… He’s a good guy, one of the best guys I know. He’d do anything for anyone, give you the shirt off his back.” I hate the cliché, but it does the job—and it’s true. In a crisis, Eric would be the first person I’d call.

“What does he do for a living?”

“High-end investments.”

“What the hell are high-end investments?”

“Five million dollars or more.” At his look of distaste, I feel the need to say more. “He can spend a year fully investigating a potential investment, only to have the acquisition committee in his company turn it down. It’s very complex work.”

Judging by his expression, that doesn’t help with the distaste. “Sounds like a heck of a way to make a living.”

“He likes it.” I take a deep breath and tell myself to get control of this meeting. “Back to the media inquiries.”

“How old is he?”

“Did you ask me here to discuss my brother, Captain West, or are you interested in my professional services?” I force myself to look him dead in the eye and not to let him see that he intimidates me.

He stares back at me for a long moment before he blinks. “Both, I suppose.”

“I’m only interested in the professional inquiries, if it’s just the same to you. While I empathize with your situation, I love my brother, and it doesn’t feel right for me to be discussing him with you.”

He doesn’t like that, but too bad. I’m here to do a job, not defend my brother.

“You empathize with my situation? Really?”

“Captain…” The note of warning in Muncie’s tone isn’t lost on either of us.

“Yes, I do empathize with what you’ve been through, and like the rest of America, I’m deeply grateful for the role you played in bringing a terrorist to justice at great personal and physical expense.”

He begins to clap, slowly and dramatically.

Heat creeps into my face, which is infuriating. The last thing I want him to see is that he gets to me.

“Did you practice that little speech on the flight out here?”

“No.” I wish I could punch him and still have a job afterward. The partners were thrilled when I told him who my potential client was. Land him, they’d said, and we’ll consider you for junior partner. “I made it up right here.”

“Nice to see that you’re good on the fly.”

“I’m outstanding on the fly, which is how I became one of the top young PR professionals in New York.”

His cell phone rings, which is when I realize I’m gripping it tightly. With him watching me in that intense, intimidating way of his, I take the call. “Answering for Captain West.”

It’s a producer for NBC Nightly News, wanting to book an interview. “Let me take down your contact information and get back to you.” The name and number go in my trusty notebook.

“And you are?” the producer asks.

“Julianne Tilden.”

“Are you working for Captain West?”

“Please hold for one moment.” I put my hand over the phone so I won’t be overheard. “It’s an NBC News producer. She wants to know if I work for you.”

He holds my gaze for a long moment, during which I honestly have no idea what he’s thinking. He gives nothing away. “Tell her you do.”

I offer him a brief nod and return to the call. “I’ll be representing Captain West for media inquiries going forward. May I give you my number so you can reach me directly?” I recite the number for my work phone and tell her again I’ll be back in touch. I end the call and glance at my new client.

The first thing I do is slide my company’s retainer contract across the table. “Before we go any further, I need you to sign this.”

He leans forward to retrieve the document, and after studying it, he says, “Two hundred dollars an hour?”

“I assure you, I’ll earn every dime of it.”

“Yes, you will,” Muncie mutters.

I really like him.

“Who’s paying for this?” Captain West asks Muncie.

“We’ve got it covered. Sign the form.”

He signs it and hands it over to me. “Now what?”

“Now we need to talk about what you’re willing to do—and what you’re not willing to do.”

“If he had his druthers, he wouldn’t do anything,” Muncie says.

I never divert my gaze from the captain. “Why is that?”

“I don’t want to talk about it, but the navy has decided to make me their new poster boy for recruitment. I just want to retire and ride off into the sunset, but they’re not going to let that happen.”

“What’s the minimum that he can do?” I ask Muncie.

“They haven’t given us a minimum. They want him to take full advantage of the opportunities he’s being offered, whatever that means.”

I redirect my attention to the captain. “What’re your physical limitations?”

If looks could kill, I’d be a goner. “I have no physical limitations.”

“So you can travel?”

“Yes,” he says through gritted teeth.

“Here’s what I suggest… We book a New York media tour, including morning shows, nightly news, late night, and then we come back out here and do an LA leg.”

As soon as I say the word “leg,” I wish I could take it back. Not that the word is incorrect, but I don’t want him to think I’m fixated on what he’s lost. And why would he think that exactly? Shut up, Julianne. I hate that inner voice that constantly critiques me. It’s my mother’s voice. She made a career out of critiquing my every move until the blessed day I left for college at Barnard and could breathe for the first time in my life.

He doesn’t respond to my suggestion.

I clear my throat. “Would that work for you?”

“I guess.”

I glance at Muncie, who shrugs as if to say damned if I know what his problem is. Great. He’s been dealing with him for months, and he has no clue. What chance do I have?

I open my notebook and uncover my favorite gel pen. “Let’s cover what you will and won’t talk about.”

“I won’t talk about the raid, the mission or anything to do with Al Khad.”

“That’s what they’re going to want to know.”

“Despite the fact that Al Khad’s camp released the video of the raid, the mission is still classified on our end. I’m not at liberty to discuss the particulars, and even if I was, I wouldn’t.”

“Can you talk about what it was like to be deployed for more than five years?”

“Yeah. It sucked.”

“You have to say more than that.”

“What else should I say?”

“What did you do for all that time?” The question is one that I’ve had since I first heard the story about him and how he’d deployed the day Al Khad’s organization had taken out a US-based cruise ship with suicide bombers, killing four thousand innocent people. My sister-in-law, Ava, who’d been John’s live-in girlfriend at the time, waited five years in San Diego for him to come back before returning home to New York to start over.

“We looked for Al Khad.”

“Where did you look for him?”

He thinks about that, seeming to decide what he should say. “Our search spanned several countries that’re hostile to Americans, so we had to embed and blend in with the locals to get information. That took time and patience, among other things.”

“When you joined the navy, did you know you might have to deploy for so long without any word to your loved ones at home?”

“Other than the girlfriend I wasn’t supposed to have, I didn’t have loved ones at home, which is why I was initially chosen for the unit. In an interview, I could only say that I didn’t have loved ones at home. I can’t say I had a girlfriend.”

“What does it matter now?” I ask. “Cat’s out of the bag.”

“It matters. I don’t want her dragged into this.”

“Yes, that’s true.” I respect that he’s protecting her, even now. “I agree that we’re better off not arousing curiosity about her. The press would be relentless in their efforts to locate and interview her.”

“Which would be inconvenient and disruptive to your brother.”

Infuriated all over again, I stare him down. “It would be inconvenient, disruptive and intrusive for Ava. I’m sure you’ll agree she’s already been through enough.”

Muncie makes a sound that might be laughter, but he quickly coughs to cover it up.

“I agree,” John says. “Ava’s been through enough, and that’s entirely my fault.”

My heart breaks a little for him, because even though he tries to hide it, the pain of losing her is as obvious as his blue eyes, prominent cheekbones and sexy lips.

God help me, but the man is sexy—and completely off-limits to me for so many reasons, it would take me days to list them all in my notebook.

Hard Target by @Pamela_Clare #MilitarySuspense #BookReview

A life debt…

Derek Tower has spent his life at war, first as a Green Beret and then as the owner of a private military company, Cobra International Security. When a high-ranking US senator asks Cobra to protect his daughter, a midwife volunteering in Afghanistan, Derek’s gut tells him to turn the senator down. The last thing he wants to do is babysit an aid worker. But Jenna isn’t just another assignment. She’s also the younger sister of his best friend, the man who died taking bullets meant for him. There’s no way Derek can refuse.

An inescapable attraction…

Jenna Hamilton doesn’t need a bodyguard, especially not one hired by her intrusive and controlling father. She knew the risks when she signed on to work in rural Afghanistan, and the hospital already has armed security. She also doesn’t need the distraction of a big, brooding operative skulking about, even if he is her late brother’s best friend—and sexy as hell. As far as she’s concerned, he can pack up his Humvee and drive into the sunset. And, no, nothing her hormones have to say about him will change her mind.

A merciless enemy…

From the moment his boots hit the ground in Afghanistan, Derek does his best to win Jenna over, posing as her brother so the two of them can spend time alone. Except that what he feels for her is anything but brotherly. Stolen moments lead to secret kisses—and an undeniable sexual attraction that shakes them both to the core. But events have been set into motion that they cannot escape. When a ruthless warlord sets his sights on Jenna, Derek will do whatever it takes to keep her safe, even if it costs him his heart—or his life.

Biography

USA Today best-selling author Pamela Clare began her writing career as a columnist and investigative reporter and eventually became the first woman editor-in-chief of two different newspapers. Along the way, she and her team won numerous state and national honors, including the National Journalism Award for Public Service and the Keeper of the Flame Lifetime Achievement Award. A single mother with two college-aged sons, she writes historical romance and contemporary romantic suspense within view of Colorado’s beautiful Rocky Mountains.

My Review

A cultural eye-opener!

When Derek Tower is commissioned to run a mission for a US Senator who wants his independant daughter brought home from Afghanistan, his first instinct is to say no. But Jenna isn’t a spoiled woman in search of excitement in a far-off land- she’s the sister of Derek’s best friend, who died because of him.

He has no choice.

Jenna is determined to help the Afghan women as a midwife in the war-torn country. She knows full well the danger, but the need is greater than her fear. She certainly doesn’t need her father’s henchman following her around, even if he is sexy. But when danger arrives, Jenna is grateful she’s not alone.

Though it could cost her heart.

This book exposes the plight of many Afghanistan women sold into lives of slavery, often by their own families. The author obviously did a lot of research and brought to life the taste and smells of a culture very different to the western world.

The story starts out slow, but builds to a good action-suspense page-turner though the sex scenes felt out of place to me.

I give Hard Target 4 lovely kisses!

Exclusive excerpt from Twilight’s Encore

Ty watched over the loaders as they carefully placed the crate in the back of his truck. He closed the tailgate and turned to thank the store manager for doing such a good job of lightening his bank account. “I hope you feel bad about this, you old codger.”

The man just smiled, well aware he’d made a good sale today. “Come on now, Mr. Garrett. A purchase such as this is an investment in the future.”

“Whose? Your grandchildren?” Ty shook his head and climbed into the cab. He started the motor and with a wave out the window, drove toward the highway home. It had taken longer than he wanted but it would be worth it in the end. He couldn’t wait to see Katy’s face when she saw it hanging in the theatre. He’d had to drive damn near to Canada before he found a dealer carrying the right merchandise.

She’d be disappointed; Ty had promised he would be back tonight. That wasn’t going to happen now. Even if he drove straight through it would take three hours to get there. At least she’d given up the hotel room at his insistence. If it were his choice she’d be in his bed, but since her brother was staying with them they’d decided on her having the room down the hall that she’d occupied before. For now.

That hadn’t stopped him from some late night rendezvous however. It was actually fun tiptoeing around in his own house in order to get some booty. Ty grinned. He could just hear what Katy would say if she heard him call their lovemaking a booty call. He couldn’t wait to get home and see her again. It had only been a few hours and already he missed her.

Ty had tried dating over the years. He’d even come close to love a couple of times. There was a woman last fall he’d dated and thought that she could be the one, but then an old friend of Jared’s came to town and stole her away. In the end it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. As soon as Katy came back he knew there was no one else. They’d wasted so many years apart. But, no more.

He still had the ring he’d bought her in high school and planned on placing it upon her finger when he returned. It wasn’t near as fancy as the rock Katy’s ex had weighed her down with, but that was okay. He’d scrimped and saved as a teen because he’d chosen it as a gift of his love, and there was no price tag you could place on that. When he was closer to home, he’d give Jared a call and have him take Kyle out for a night on the town. Maybe stop at the store for some strawberries and champagne. Ty grinned. He would never have taken himself for a romantic, but he certainly was when it came to Katy.

He almost missed the warning chirp from his phone. He turned down the music and listened, but there were no incoming calls. Ty shrugged off the foreboding feeling twisting his gut in knots and lowered the window, whistling. He drove another ten miles before it dawned on him what that beep might mean. Jared’s new security system.

His hands tightened on the wheel and his foot pressed down on the gas pedal. He kept an anxious eye on the road until he found a place to pull over. Signaling, Ty turned in and slid to a dust raising halt. He grabbed his cell from the console and started thumbing, in search of the app that would connect him with the theatre’s new camera system. Why hadn’t he paid more attention when Jared walked him through everything after the install? He jabbed the little icon and waited for the application to load.

C’mon, c’mon already.

Shit, he only had one bar. Ty hopped out of the cab of the truck and using his arm like an antenna, wandered around the side of the road looking like an idiot. Suddenly the picture came in and what he saw stopped him in his tracks.

Kyle, at least it looked like Kyle—kind of hard to tell with the whole Carrie thing going on—was wandering dazed among chunks of what seemed to be cement shards all over the floor of the main gallery. His hair was matted with blood and grotesque rivulets ran down his face.

“Kyle, what the hell happened?” Ty roared. Where was Katy? Fuck, he knew he shouldn’t have left town. “Kyle.” No response. Obviously the audio feed was down.

Ty jogged back to his pickup and gunned her back onto the road with chirping wheels and irate honks from fellow travellers. Shit, he was too far away to do any good. Hopefully, the motion detectors had done their job and set off an alarm for the police.

Using hands-free, Ty called Jared.

“Yeah, I see it,” were his friend’s opening words.

“What the fuck happened?” Ty was beyond frustrated. His foot pressed the pedal to the medal and the scenery became nothing more than a blur.

“I don’t know, man. Everything was fine when I locked up last night.”

Ty had given the men a much-needed weekend off after all the hard effort they’d put in, now he wished he hadn’t. “I have no sound on my end, how about yours?” He was desperate to learn of Katy’s whereabouts. She must have decided to show off the theatre to her brother. There was no way she’d leave his side if he were injured.

Unless she had no choice.

“Me either. Some… knocked the wiring out or the cops would already be there.” Jared’s words came through the truck’s radio disjointed as Ty moved in and out of range.

“Call now. I’m on the way.” Ty swallowed hard. “Make sure she’s all right.”

“Will do. Don’t worry, she’s probably looking for the first aid kit, you know Katy.”

Ty hung up. He sure as hell hoped that’s what was happening, but the twinge in his gut had turned into a stabbing pain.

He’s wanted Molly forever and it’s time she knows it. So when a new threat against her emerges, Jase will put his own life on the line to protect her, no matter the cost.

Prologue

Molly Boyd clamped her teeth together to keep them from chattering and hunched into a tighter ball in an effort to keep warm, but it didn’t help. She was cold all the way to her bones, her sodden clothes sticking to her skin. A summer rainstorm pounded down outside the shelter of the culvert she huddled in—hiding from her ex-husband.

Shock kept advancing and retreating, trapping her in an emotional fog. She’d never imagined she would end up like this. Not even after everything she and Carter had been through.

The left side of her face throbbed. Her cheek was bruised, her eye swelling slightly, and her lip burned where Carter had backhanded her. Her bare feet stung from the scratches she’d sustained in her flight to this lonely culvert at the side of the road.

All of it was eclipsed by the pain in her heart.

She closed her eyes, fought to hold off the memory of him breaking into the house and coming at her with that terrifying, predatory expression on his face. The memory of escaping the house, slamming that branch over his back and running for her life through the darkened woods.

Tears threatened. She shook them off, refusing to give in. If she started crying now, she might never stop, and she had to stay alert because she was still in danger with Carter looking for her.

What am I going to do?

She shivered harder, tucked her knees up tight to her chest and leaned her forehead on them as she fought to keep from spiraling into the black pit of despair yawning at the edge of her consciousness. Jase was coming. She’d called him and he was coming. He would find her, help her, and he’d alerted the cops. He would make sure she was safe—even if it was from his former best friend.

At the faint sound of an approaching vehicle, her insides tightened in fear. She lifted her head, her gaze darting toward the road, dreading the moment the familiar black pickup came into view again. Carter had driven up and down this road earlier, shouting her name through his open window for endless minutes. He would never stop looking for her.

Headlights cut through the gloom. She turned her face away and squeezed her eyes shut, willing Carter away. The divorce papers had set him off, even though he must have known they were coming.

She sat perfectly still, heart hammering against her ribs as she waited, hardly daring to breathe lest the slightest motion give her hiding spot away.

“Moll?”

She flinched at the male voice all but drowned out by the thundering rain, her heart rocketing into her throat. Shit, she was trapped here. Carter was former Special Forces and the waterlogged ditch was too steep. She’d never be able to climb out and escape him if he found her this time.

“Moll. It’s Jase.”

Jase. The fear receded instantly, the cold inside her thawing under a tide of relief as she turned her head toward him. She trusted him. Trusted that he would protect her and keep her safe, no matter what.

He was wading toward her through the flooded ditch, a tall, strong silhouette, his jeans soaked to the knees. She couldn’t move, couldn’t call out. Her muscles were too weak and shaky to obey her.

Gathering her courage as he came nearer, she forced her gaze up to meet Jase’s. The instant their eyes connected, she almost lost the battle to keep the tears at bay.

Frowning in concern, he quickly climbed into the culvert and knelt down beside her. Before she could find her voice, he reached out and gently grasped her chin in his warm fingers. His jaw was tight, his aqua eyes burning with outrage. “Did he do this? Did he hit you?” he demanded, voice vibrating with horror and anger.

Molly’s fading composure crumbled. All the emotions she’d been holding back crashed over her like a dark wave, taking her under. She leaned toward him just as the dam broke.

Jase made a low sound and reached for her, wrapping his strong, warm arms around her as she laid her head on his shoulder. He ran a comforting hand up and down her back gently. “Are you hurt anywhere else?”

Just her heart, now shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

She shook her head, her entire body trembling while she choked back the sobs trying to claw their way free of her throat, the humiliation all but strangling her. This was a nightmare. Only she wasn’t dreaming.

“All right, let’s get you out of here.” Jase slid one arm beneath her knees and lifted her, keeping her close to him as he carried her out of the culvert and through the water-filled ditch.

Molly ducked her head against the pelting rain and curled into him. She didn’t know what to say. Was ashamed to tell him what had happened.

“I’m gonna boost you up, then come right behind you.” He lifted her toward the steeply sloping side and helped her scramble over the edge before climbing up the side. Before she could even get to her feet, he scooped her up again, ignoring her mumbled protest as he strode for his truck, parked close by at the edge of the road.

Molly curled against him, still trying to come to terms with everything that had happened. As well as something…something that was still happening inside her right now.

Jase opened the front passenger door and carefully placed her on the leather seat. The interior was warm. Almost hot compared to outside.

“Hang tight.” He disappeared for a moment, opened the rear door to grab something and came back with a jacket. He tucked it around her, did up her seatbelt because her hands were still shaking and shut the door. Once he had climbed into the driver’s seat, he cranked the heat to high and reached over to aim the vents at her.

Molly sighed in relief as the warm air flowed over her. The numbness was retreating, leaving a sapping exhaustion in its wake.

Still leaning toward her, Jase reached up to stroke her wet hair away from her face, his eyes worried. “Moll, do you need to go to the hospital?”

“N-no. I’m okay.” You’re not. And you’ll never be okay again.

“What happened?” he asked, turning the truck in a tight circle and starting back up the road.

She huddled beneath his jacket and told him about Carter breaking into the house and attacking her in as few words as possible, her voice hitching due to the little gasps still jarring her lungs.

Jase was silent as she finished, his stubbled jaw clenched tight. He shook his golden-brown head, and a deep, terrible shame engulfed her, almost worse than the pain of Carter hitting her.

But there was more to her story. So much more. She didn’t want to hide the rest from him and had intended to tell everyone anyway. Just not like this.

“And it gets worse,” she added, her voice barely above a whisper.

He looked over at her sharply.

She didn’t speak for a long moment, staring out the windshield into the gloom. “I’m pregnant,” she finally said, her voice breaking.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

“You shouldn’t be here.” Her voice was flat, a careful monotone.

He locked down a flinch. That even, cautious tone was another departure from the free living, expressive spirit she’d been back then.

“We need to talk,” he said, channeling that same flat monotone.

“There’s nothing to talk about.” She backed up a pace, as though she were about to slam the door in his face.

“Then you can listen.” He stuck his foot in the doorframe and locked down every ounce of emotion. “Look, I’m not here to get you back, okay? That ship sailed a long time ago. But you used to be a friend, and you’re about to make a big mistake. That’s something I can’t walk away from.”

“This isn’t your business.” The skin around her eyes tightened.

“I’m making it my business.” He forced the next words out, all too aware that the bearer of bad news was usually the one skewered and strung. “You don’t know what you’re getting into. Mitch isn’t the guy you think he is.”

“I know exactly the kind of man he is.” She contradicted him, her voice even tighter than before.

“Do you?” Tag asked grimly. “Then you know your loving fiancé is fishing at the BU and taking a new catch home every night?”

Something slipped through her eyes. But it wasn’t pain. It was more calculating than that.

“I don’t care.”

Tag rocked back on his heels. She didn’t care? That didn’t sound like the Sarah he’d known.

She must have seen the surprise on his face, because she leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping with intensity. “Look, nothing you say is going to change my mind. Nothing. Just go.”

He shook his head, disoriented. Could she really have changed that much over the course of two years? The Sarah he’d been in love with would never have put up with Mitch’s bullshit. Not if she’d known about it. The Sarah he’d loved had too much pride for that.

With a lift of his eyebrows, he cocked his head, studying her. Every freckle stood out like flecks of gold on her white face. He regrouped, frowning. There was something off here. Way off.

The Contract: Between Heaven and Earth by John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano #Suspense #BookReview @HowellWave @GMPlano

The earth is under the threat of a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.
Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance, and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits of the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.
If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires.

My Review

What would you do if you were given the challenge to save earth?

When two angels accept a mission to stop a catastrophic event from taking place on earth, little do they realize they’ll be doing it as strangers inhabiting new bodies with their own list of problems to solve.

Sarah is in an abusive marriage she can’t escape. It’s only after Theresa’s celestial intervention that she finds the strength to leave, but not before she meets her husband’s suspicious Russian associates.

Peter takes over the body of wounded Navy SEAL Brad Channing and aids in his recovery and journey to become a writer.

Sarah and Brad have some chance meetings, and instant chemistry, but it’s only when they learn of a conspiracy plot to kill the president that they become a team in search of the truth.

A fast-paced who-done-it that will keep you reading until the very end!

I give The Contract: Between Heaven and Earth 4 lovely kisses- an entertaining read!

Heartbreak Warfare by Heather Orgeron and Kate Stewart #BookReview #MilitaryRomance @hmorgeronauthor @authorklstewart

Now a Top 100 Amazon Bestseller!

Briggs,

Remember when we parted ways in Germany? It was the day I broke your heart. What you didn’t know was that I was breaking mine too.

I thought they’d be enough-my husband and my son. That I’d get home and everything would go back to the way it was . . .

Before the war.
Before the ambush.
Before you.

But, no matter how hard I try, I can’t erase the trauma we shared. I can’t seem to forget the way my heart beat in time with yours.

The truth is I’m lost without you.

I thought the nightmare was over when they pulled us from that hole in the ground, but nothing could have prepared me for the war I’d face at home.
I know it’s selfish of me to ask, but, please, I have to see you one last time. . .

All my love,
Scottie

My Review

Riveting!

This is not a book for pus-says as Mullins would say. There are so many raw moments, it brought tears to my eyes. Yes, it’s that good.

Katy Scott is proud of her military heritage and is happy to serve her country when she is called upon, even though it means leaving behind the most important people in her life- her husband, the Captain, and her six-year-old son, Noah.

Baghdad is an awakening, but with the help of her best friend, Mullins, Scott settles into camp life. This is where she first meets Christopher Briggs-infantry, and though she’s not sure she likes him, it’s hard to avoid the chemistry between them. But, Katy loves her husband, Gavin, and would never dream of cheating and she makes sure everyone- especially Briggs- knows this.

A routine trip to deliver supplies goes horribly awry and Briggs, Scott, and Mullins are captured by a militia force. What follows are some of the darkest days in these soldiers lives. My heart bled with all they were forced to endure. The only thing that kept Briggs and Scottie alive were each other. A bond was formed in that pit of hell that was impossible to break.

After their release, and return stateside, the war veterans try to recover the pieces of their lives and carry on, but nothing is as before.

There is only the after.

Favorite lines:

You were destined to be a part of my life. You’ve changed me. No matter where this journey takes us, when I close my eyes, it will be your face I see. When I breathe my last breath, your name will be on my lips.

I’m the problem, and that’s the hardest part. Our marriage was completely different before I was deployed. Army spouses deserve fucking medals.

Maybe time will give back what it took away, and I’ll be the wiser for it. Maybe…eventually. For now, my heart is the reckless navigator, and I, a reluctant passenger, unable to escape the way I love him.

This book will throw all your preconceived beliefs out the window. There are no easy answers, and in the end, all you can do is follow your heart.

I give Heartbreak Warfare 5+ lovely kisses- this book will destroy you!

Long Live the Beautiful Hearts by Emma Scott #YA #Romance #BookReview @EmmaS_Writes

Never again would I allow my heart to become the plaything of someone else.
Never again would I let a man (or men) come between me and my goals.
Never again would I love without feeling the fullness of that love in return.
Not until I knew it was real. And if that took me a lifetime to find, so be it.

Those were my vows, and after all that had happened with Connor and Weston, I was determined to keep them. To protect my heart.
And then he came home, and my vows became his promises.

He held my heart in his hands with reverence and care.
He helped me find my soul’s greatest purpose in life.
He loved me with a love so pure and vibrant, I knew I’d never feel anything like it in a hundred lifetimes.
It was real.

Until it wasn’t.
Until it all came crashing down when I discovered the deep love I thought I’d found was nestled in a web of lies—so soft and silken I hadn’t noticed it was there.
Until it was too late.

My Review

Heart-wrenchingly beautiful!

Emma Scott is definitely my favorite author of 2018 and she sets the bar high with the story of two best friends and the woman they love.

Long Live the Beautiful Hearts is the second in a two-part series (though she does have a novella releasing in December that carries on the story) that is best read in order.

In book #2 Weston and Connor return from war with serious injuries and a lot of pent-up emotions. Anger and guilt boil over and shove a wedge between the two best friends, driving Connor to disappear.

This leaves a now wheelchair bound Weston the chance to rebuild his friendship with the woman he’s loved from afar- Connor’s girlfriend.

Autumn is hurt when Connor comes home from war a different, distant version of himself. And she can’t understand how he could disappear and leave Wes to cope on his own.

She misses the friendship she’d given up with Weston because of one night’s indiscretion and aches to help him transition into his new life.

But, under it all, is a passion that won’t be denied.

Here Comes the Groom/ The Soldier’s Wedding by Karina Bliss #Romance #BookReview #BookLove @BlissKarina

Award-winning author Karina Bliss launches her Special Forces series with a sweet, funny, growing-from-tragedy, kind of steamy friends-to-lovers romance.

Love heals all wounds…

Special Forces soldier Dan Jansen has come home from Afghanistan with one objective: to marry Josephine Swann. First he has to convince his childhood friend that their marriage ‘agreement,’ a tipsy scrawl on a beer coaster three years ago, is binding. And that platonic love is enough to build a passionate future on.

Protect those you love…

Jo has only thought of Dan ‘that way’ once; the night before a surgery that changed her life forever. Friendship is all she has to offer as she struggles to care for her grandmother and resurrect her business.

Both have wounds only the other can heal. But that requires surrendering their secrets. Can two best friends create a love story for the ages?

My Review

No wonder this is on my re-read shelf!

There are so many great things I could say about this book, I don’t know where to start.

SAS Special Forces soldier Dan Jansen returns home from Afghanistan carrying a ton of guilt and almost desperately focuses on the one good thing in his life- his best friend, Swannie. He decides now is the time to enforce the pledge they made to marry each other by the time they turn thirty-three.

Except, his bride-to-be is surprisingly reluctant.

Jo Swann is fighting demons of her own and doesn’t have time to put up with her best friend’s shenanigans. He’s booked the wedding, sent out invitations, and even ordered the flowers! It’s beginning not to feel much like a joke anymore…

While there are many laugh-out-loud moments in this story, it’s so much more than that. Jo’s grandmother has dementia, the newspaper she’s inherited is in danger of a hostile takeover, and oh yeah, she’s recovering from a mastectomy.

At the same time, Dan learns his parents are separating, and his cousin’s wife and son (the SAS soldier who died in battle) are having a hard time accepting the loss. Hell, so is he.

These two are going through the worst of times and deserve a chance at true happiness.

My favorite lines:

The weather had been moody all day, trying on all four seasons like a teenage girl who couldn’t decide what to wear.

Bliss, Karina. The Soldier’s Wedding: Special Forces #1 (Kindle Location 1558). Karina Bliss. Kindle Edition.

He kissed her. With so much yearning, so much need and persuasion that she had no choice but to kiss him back. With a groan, Jo wrenched her mouth away. “The fear’s always going to be there,” she warned.

In the SAS they teach you that it’s how you dance with it that makes the difference.”

She closed her eyes.

Sliding one hand behind her nape, Dan nuzzled her neck. “Dance with me,” he murmured against her skin, felt her responsive shiver.

He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive… The Woman Left Behind by Linda Howard #RomSuspense #Read @AvonBooks

Jina Modell works in Communications for a paramilitary organization, and she really likes it. She likes the money, she likes the coolness factor—and it was very cool, even for Washington, DC. She liked being able to kick terrorist butts without ever leaving the climate-controlled comfort of the control room.

But when Jina displays a really high aptitude for spatial awareness and action, she’s reassigned to work as an on-site drone operator in the field with one of the GO-teams, an elite paramilitary unit. The only problem is she isn’t particularly athletic, to put it mildly, and in order to be fit for the field, she has to learn how to run and swim for miles, jump out of a plane, shoot a gun…or else be out of a job.

Team leader Levi, call sign Ace, doesn’t have much confidence in Jina–who he dubbed Babe as soon as he heard her raspy, sexy voice–making it through the rigors of training. The last thing he needs is some tech geek holding them back from completing a dangerous, covert operation. In the following months, however, no one is more surprised than he when Babe, who hates to sweat, begins to thrive in her new environment, displaying a grit and courage that wins her the admiration of her hardened, battle-worn teammates. What’s even more surprising is that the usually very disciplined GO-team leader can’t stop thinking about kissing her smart, stubborn mouth…or the building chemistry and tension between them.

Meanwhile, a powerful Congresswoman is working behind the scenes to destroy the GO-teams, and a trap is set to ambush Levi’s squad in Syria. While the rest of the operatives set off on their mission, Jina remains at the base to control the surveillance drone, when the base is suddenly attacked with explosives. Thought dead by her comrades, Jina escapes to the desert where, brutally tested beyond measure, she has to figure out how to stay undetected by the enemy and make it to her crew in time before they’re exfiltrated out of the country.

But Levi never leaves a soldier behind, especially the brave woman he’s fallen for. He’s bringing back the woman they left behind, dead or alive.

Teaser Graphic - The Woman Left Behind by Linda Howard - 1

Excerpt

She wanted to reach out and touch him, but despite what had just happened between them, she felt constrained. Their make-out session hadn’t changed anything. He was still the leader of that team, and he’d do whatever was necessary for their operational stability because their very lives depended on it. Her job was to safeguard them as much as possible, to provide an extra set of eyes looking for trouble or gathering information without exposing them to unnecessary danger.

If she were in an arguing frame of mind, she’d yell at him that the guys wouldn’t mind at all if she and Levi began a relationship, but she’d be lying. It would make a difference. The others would subconsciously begin looking for signs of favoritism, which would foster resentment and a lack of trust. Any argument between her and Levi would necessarily cause tension among the others. That was just how team dynamics worked; a disagreement between any two members was one thing, but throw sex into the mixture and it became combustible.

She turned her head and stared at the sky as grimly as he was, and for the same reason. As things stood, she had two choices: she could quit training and have Levi—for how long was up for debate—or she could stay on the team and deal with the bitter truth that they couldn’t be together.

She. Couldn’t. Quit. Doing so would betray everything she was, every sense of self. Maybe she drove herself past what a sane person would do, but didn’t the guys also do that? Being who they were, doing what they did, required more of them than, say, a regular nine-to-five job.

She had been happy with that nine-to-five job, but now this was her reality, and she wouldn’t, couldn’t, turn her back on it.
