My Review

Santa is on the warpath in this holiday who-done-it by New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces one of her toughest assignments as a sadistic killer haunts the city dressed as Santa Claus. His calling card: expensive tokens depicting the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Eve has to track a monster terrorizing the patrons of a dating service while trying to block the memories of her own childhood. Thankfully, she has the support of her incredibly talented and sexy husband, Roarke.

This story deals with some tough issues, but adds to the depth of Eve’s character and her relationships on the police force. She often comes across as brash, but underneath, in a place she usually only lets Roarke see, she’s still the abused, lonely little girl who killed her father to survive.

I give Holiday in Death 5 lovely kisses- A must read!

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: Kill the Queen by @Jennifer_Estep #Fantasy #Suspense @PureTextuality

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series—an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance.

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.

But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.

Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.

But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

Excerpt

The day of the royal massacre started out like any other.

With me doing something completely, utterly useless.

“Why do I have to make the pie?” I grumbled.

I stared at the flour, sugar, and butter lined up on the table, along with measuring cups and spoons, a paring knife, a rolling pin, and bowls full of honey cranberries and bloodcrisp apples.

Isobel waved her hand over everything. “It’s a sign of respect for a member of the royal family to make the traditional welcome pie for the Andvarian ambassador. Lord Hans requested cranberry-apple for today’s luncheon.”

“You’re the cook master, not me,” I grumbled again. “You should make the pie. Your magic will make it look and taste amazing.”

Masters were those whose magic let them work with specific objects or elements, like metal, glass, and wood, to create astounding things. Isobel’s power helped her craft amazing desserts out of ordinary flour, sugar, and butter, which was why she’d been the head baker at Seven Spire palace for more than twenty years.

She slapped her hands on her hips. “I might be a cook master, but the Andvarians have very finely tuned senses. They would know if I made the pie instead of you. They can sniff out the intentions of every single person who handles their food, even if it’s only the servant who pours their wine. It’s one of the reasons why they can’t be poisoned.”

I snorted. “That’s just an old fairy tale started by the Andvarians themselves to keep people from trying to poison them. They don’t have any better senses than anyone else. Only mutts like me have that sort of magic.” I tapped my nose. “I might have an enhanced sense of smell, but even I can’t always sniff out people’s intentions.”

Isobel frowned. “You know I don’t like that word, especially when it’s applied to you.”

Unlike masters, who were sought after and lauded for their impressive skills, mutts were not, simply because our magic didn’t let us create anything. Most mutts only had a small spark of power, a tiny flicker that enhanced something about themselves, like my supersensitive nose. Something that barely qualified as magic, especially when compared to the airy meringues, spun-sugar cakes, and other delicacies that Isobel whipped up. When it came to magic, mutts were considered far weaker and far, far inferior to masters, magiers, and morphs. Hence the term mutts.

I shrugged. “We both know that I am most definitely a mutt in every sense of the word.”

Isobel winced, but she didn’t disagree.

“Besides, Lord Hans has the constitution of a gargoyle. I’ve seen him eat pepper radishes like they were as sweet as those apples. Why, I could pour him a tall, frosty glass of wormroot poison, and it wouldn’t give him much more than a stomachache. And a small one at that.”

Isobel’s lips twitched, but she summoned up a stern look, trying to keep me in line. Always a losing battle. I was rather incorrigible that way.

“Regardless, you need to make the pie, Lady Everleigh. You were the only one who was, ah, available.”

“Oh, really?” I arched an eyebrow, and Isobel dropped her dark brown gaze from mine.

Available? Well, that was a nice way of saying that it was once again time for me to earn my keep as Lady Everleigh Saffira Winter Blair. A mouthful of fancy names that meant very little in the grand scheme of things, but they, and the lineage that went along with them, were good enough for my cousin Queen Cordelia Alexandra Summer Blair to have me trotted out like a trained monkey whenever a so-called royal presence was required. Like wasting a morning baking a pie for some foreign ambassador who probably wouldn’t eat a single bite of it.

Isobel winced again, causing lines to groove into her bronze skin, then smoothed back her graying black hair, the way she always did whenever she had bad news. “I’m afraid that it’s not just one pie. Lord Hans requested thirteen of them. It’s his favorite dessert. The Andvarian king’s granddaughter loves it too. She’s also part of the ambassador’s contingent. I believe her name is Gemma.”

I glanced at the stacks of pie tins half hidden behind the bowls of apples. Anger pricked my heart that I was always the one singled out for such tasks, but the sharp sting was quickly replaced by cold, numbing acceptance.

“T.M. Frazier sucked me in from the very first page and then slayed me with end of Perversion. This trilogy is EPIC! If you loved TM Frazier’s King series, you MUST read the Perversion trilogy!”- NYT bestselling author Meghan March

The USA Today bestselling author of the King Series, T.M. Frazier, brings you an all-new trilogy with an anti-hero you’re going to love to hate and a ballsy heroine with more than just tricks up her sleeve.

Love is supposed to be a fairy tale.
Ours is a death wish.

I’m the executioner for the Bedlam Brotherhood.
She’s a con artist working for my greatest enemy.

I use her.
She manipulates me.

We find ourselves on opposite sides of a bloody war.

My heart and head tell me I have to stay away.
My lust for her doesn’t give a sh*t.

Nothing’s fair in love and gang war.

Biography

T.M. Frazier

T.M. Frazier never imagined that a single person would ever read a word she wrote when she published her first book in 2013. Now, she is a USA Today bestselling author. Her books have been translated into numerous languages and published all around the world.

T.M. enjoys writing what she calls ‘wrong side of the tracks romance’ with morally corrupt antiheroes and ballsy heroines.

Her books have been described as raw, dark and gritty. Basically, what that means, is while some authors are great at describing a flower as it blooms, T.M. is better at describing it in the final stages of decay.

She loves meeting her readers, but if you see her at an event please don’t pinch her because she’s not ready to wake up from this amazing dream.

My Review

A Raw and Emotional Roller Coaster Romance!

First of all, that cover!

How can you not be drawn in by those mesmerizing eyes? Tristan (Grim) has been in and out of foster homes for most of his young life and somewhere along the way he shut down inside. Nothing could hurt him because he wouldn’t let it.

Then he had a chance encounter with a twelve year old pickpocket named Emma Jane (Tricks) and nothing would ever be the same.

Five years later Grim is executioner for the gang who took him in, and is as content as it’s possible to be we death hovering around every corner. Or he would be, if he could just find the girl who disappeared that night so long ago.

Emma Jane spent the last five years trying to stay alive, also. Her best friend’s brother offers them a refuge that turns into a prison when they learn he runs a gang of miscreants. He forces Tricks to steal in order to pay for their keep- unless she’d like to compensate him in another way.

The war between the gangs heats up and Grim and Tricks are caught in the middle of a deadly feud that will test them in ways they couldn’t have foreseen.

This book is enlightening to anyone who has never known that kind of lifestyle. Grim and Tricks have to make tough decisions every day just to stay alive. Then they learn they belong to opposing gangs and their love becomes that much more impossible.

They call me Grim. I’m the executioner for the Bedlam Brotherhood. Death is upon you if you see me coming. Kidding. You’ll never see me coming.

Frazier, T.M.. Perversion (Perversion Trilogy Book 1) (Kindle Locations 99-101). Frazier Publishing. Kindle Edition.

I give Perversion 4.5 lovely kisses. With another round of editing this would be an easy 5 star read!

Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality… Secrets in Death by J.D. Robb #Mystery #BookReview

51p7tZxTvkL

A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people’s secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it’s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that’s exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described “social information reporter,” or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she’d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone’s done the same to her, literally—with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn’t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she’ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn’t want to know…

My Review

What happens when the woman everyone loves to hate dies in front of you?

See that justice is served.

When society reporter Larinda Mars dies just steps away from Eve Dallas in a busy New York restaurant (coincidentally owned by her husband) she locks down the doors and begins an investigation that will lead her into the dirty little secrets of some of the city’s most prominent members.

Larinda Mars held a profitable sideline blackmailing people to keep their secrets. The deeper Dallas searches, the more suspects turn up.

I love the connection between Dallas and Roarke. Their relationship is the quiet in the storm that is Eve’s job. The little things Roarke does for her, such as making sure she eats healthy and has comfortable shoes warms my heart. As he puts it;

He brought the hand he held to his lips. “My cop spends a good portion of her day on her feet, walking these streets and chasing bad guys. I have a fondness for those feet, and consider good boots as essential in your daily pursuits as your weapon.”

Get a sneak peek at UNLOCKING FEAR:

“You should take the first swing.” Reese lifted the black strap of the clear goggles over her hair and the back of her head. She secured them over her face until the plastic curve rested on the bridge of her nose. “Isn’t it good luck or something? This way, you only have yourself to blame if you regret doing the damage.”

Noah hadn’t heard that particular old wives’ tale before, but he wasn’t the superstitious type. He handed over the sledge hammer and stepped back, allowing her room to swing the heavy tool.

“She’s all yours, honey. Go for it.”

Reese bit her lip as she attempted to get a good hold on the rubberized grip over the wooden handle. Once she was comfortable with her grasp, she lifted the heavy weapon and swung for the fences. Her laugh reverberated throughout the empty house as her first try resulted in only a tiny dent.

“You can swing harder than that,” Noah encouraged, laughing with her.

Her next strike cracked the drywall.

“You’re right,” Reese said rather breathlessly with a radiant smile. “This is very therapeutic.”

Another blow of the sledgehammer had a piece of drywall falling to the floor, but her swing was off by a half foot or more. The angle of the head had made a rather deep hole.

“You’re lucky I don’t charge for…” Noah raised a hand to stop Reese from swinging the sledge hammer once more. He stepped closer to the portion of the wall she’d opened without meaning to, wondering what the hell was inside the partition. It looked to be some type of heavy construction plastic wrap. “Wait. Hold up for just a second.”

Noah grabbed part of the drywall and pulled it away, hoping to clear whatever was inside out of Reese’s way so that she could keep working.

“Noah, is that what I think it is?”

The sledge hammer hit the floor with a thud at the exact moment Noah took a step back at the realization of what was in front of them. Both he and Reese stood side by side as they stared in horror at a secret this house had held for twelve years.

“We need to call the sheriff. Right now.”

Noah reached into the front pocket of his jeans and pulled out his phone, blinking one more time in hopes that the grisly scene in front of him disappeared. That wasn’t going to happen.

A decomposed skeleton wrapped in plastic stared out from its hiding place inside the wall. The jaw was slightly opened as if to be screaming for help. The col or of the hair was still recognizable after all these years.

Just what kind of hideous crime had they uncovered?

Noah and Reese exchanged a horrified glance that conveyed a million words.

They were now bound together after having uncovered a shocking secret someone had wanted to stay buried forever.

My Review

A spooky treat!

Recovering from an accident that almost took Maya Sinclair’s life, she moves to the small town of Hode’s Hill and is immediately swept into an ancient legend. Strange occurrences begin to happen in the home she’s renting, and along with a group of new friends, Maya researches the town’s history and finds a disturbing trail of murder and deceit.

Past and present collide when a young woman turns up dead and one of Maya’s friends is gravely wounded at the hands of a monster known as The Fiend. Research turns up a disturbing connection between The Fiend and Lucinda Glass, the blue lady of Hode’s Hill- a nineteenth century spiritualist who once lived in Maya’s home.

Twists and turns abound in this story. The author does a masterful job weaving past and present into a tale of the lengths we can go for unrequited love.

The ending was unexpected and admittedly left me sad, but that’s the goal. Trust me, you don’t want to pass this one up!

Favorite line:

My Review

This book gave me chills!

Medical examiner Dr. Annabelle Schwartzman is called upon to investigate a woman’s murder and is shocked by similarities to her own past that she can’t ignore. Is her psychotic ex-husband behind the crime?

Seven years ago, she managed the impossible and escaped the controlling man she’d married too late to save her unborn child, something she’d have to live with forever.

Now he was back.

Let the games begin.

This story is an intense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The tension amps up continually and had me gasping more than once!

I questioned Annabelle’s original weakness, for want of a better term, in staying with a man who obviously had no respect for her, but this was later explained with insight into her self-absorbed mother.

I give Exhume 5 lovely kisses- A great start to a crime series!

My Review

This book got my attention right from the first page!

A young woman wakes disorientated, naked and covered in blood. Horrified she stumbles down the hall of a strange house and finds a gruesome murder scene in the kitchen. Murky memories leave her wondering if she was a victim, or was it possible she’d committed murder?

Defense lawyer, Morgan Dane has more than enough on her plate right now, including a slight concussion thanks to an ungrateful client, but when friend and P.I Lincoln Sharp asks for her help she can’t refuse.

The evidence against Haley Powell was overwhelming and newsworthy, Morgan had no idea how she was going to get her newest client a fair trial, but she had to try. Something inside told her the girl was innocent.

The author adds just the right amount of romance to give quiet moments in between the action that gains momentum like a speeding bullet with every page. There are so many red herrings I could have made soup!

Thanks to Melinda Leigh and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this fast-paced mystery.

Life is an extravaganza! figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had met in San Diego and married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University. A GED for my husband and many more years of education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. I’m still married to the same sweet guy and live with him in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing fiction, I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese kitties.

People die, but legends live on.

New York antiquities appraiser Annalisse Drury recently lost her best friend to murder. The killer’s identity may be linked to her friend’s expensive missing bracelet—a 500-year-old artifact that carries an ancient curse, one that unleashes evil upon any who dare wear the jewelry created for the Persian royal family.

Weeks later, Annalisse sees a matching necklace at a Manhattan gallery opening. She begs the owner to destroy the cursed piece, but her pleas fall on deaf ears—despite the unnatural death that occurs during the opening. With two victims linked to the jewelry, Annalisse is certain she must act.

Desperate, Annalisse enlists the gallery owner’s son to help—even though she’s afraid he’ll break her heart. Wealthy and devastatingly handsome, with a string of bereft women in his wake, Greek playboy Alec Zavos dismisses Annalisse’s concerns—until his parents are ripped from the Zavos family yacht during their ocean voyage near Crete.

Annalisse and Alec race across two oceans to save his mother, feared dead or kidnapped. When the killer changes tactics and goes after Alec behind Annalisse’s back, can her plan to rescue Alec’s mother save them all?

Hold on for a heart-thumping, thrilling adventure through exotic lands in this fast-moving romantic suspense mystery by Marlene M. Bell.

Excerpt

SEVERAL WILD-EYED WOMEN stood in a semicircle, their hands pressed against their cheeks or over their mouths. Annalisse broke for an opening in the rigid line of guests. Her heart stopped at the sight of Alec administering the Heimlich maneuver to her boss. A cool clamminess rushed the nape of her neck while she watched Alec’s repeated cupped fists to Harry’s upper abdomen. Harry’s stoic, ashen face left her woozy.

“Alec, let me help.” Annalisse ran to Alec’s side.

Harry’s dead weight collapsed on Alec, and he stumbled to keep Harry from falling on her. Alec slowly laid him on his back. Lifeless. Not breathing. Annalisse’s suspicions were confirmed. Harry was sick.

The silk fabric clung to her waistline while perspiration trickled down her thighs. She sank to her knees and leaned over Harry’s paunch, loosened his tie, and checked for a pulse at his neck. Heat from the crowd suffocated her. Open mouthed, she labored for breath. Westinn’s bedrock, its patriarch, couldn’t leave her. Not yet.

She clutched his shirt and yelled, “Don’t give up, Harry!” Touching his cheeks, she found them cool. Annalisse scanned the room. “Is anyone a doctor or EMT?” Vacant stares met her question.

A reel of her first aid training ran through her head. Annalisse tilted Harry’s head back, looked down his throat and did a finger sweep. “No food in the airway,” she mumbled. She checked for a pulse again at the carotid, and, one hand over the other, pressed the heel of her palm over his breastbone and pumped in short bursts. Counting to thirty in her head, she huffed after each thrust. Her arms ached and her palms hurt. “Harry, breathe! Damn it, breathe!”

“Did someone call an ambulance? Where is it?” Alec checked the Rolex on his wrist and crouched next to her. “When you’re ready, I’ll take over.”

The irony. Harry had forced his employees to take the CPR course with no idea he’d be the one in need.

A lonesome siren’s wail pierced her ears when the vehicle stopped in front of the gallery. Annalisse glanced through the entrance as the FDNY emergency truck’s blaze red and yellow door opened. The myriad of blinding lights split the evening. She turned back to her unresponsive boss and ripped open his shirt, sending buttons flying to the tile before she continued CPR.

Muffled voices, footsteps, and a metallic clank sounded from behind. Ambulance attendants rushed through the double glass doors, banging their gurney along the way. In the cool relief of the air from outside, she silently said a prayer for Harry.

“I appreciate everyone’s concern, but please allow the emergency personnel room to do their work.” Generosa swiped her forehead with the back of her hand. “Hang on, Harry.”

Lies by T. M. Logan #BookReview #mystery #suspense

What if you have the perfect life, the perfect wife and the perfect child—and then, in one shattering moment, you discover nothing is as it seems?

It’s the evening drive home from work, a route Joe Lynch has taken a hundred times with his young son. But when he unexpectedly sees his wife’s car ahead of them, he decides to follow her—and ends up witnessing her secret rendezvous with another man. The encounter will tear two families apart and leave an innocent man set up to take the fall for a murder.

Joe finds himself in the sights of a ruthless killer determined to destroy everything he treasures. He will do whatever it takes to protect his family, but as the net tightens around him, his life begins to fall apart. Soon, Joe is in a life or death struggle with a cunning opponent who is always one step ahead.

Lies poses the question: Can we ever really trust those closest to us?

In the tradition of The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney and Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris, Lies by T.M. Logan is an unputdownable thriller in which each chapter changes the meaning of what came before, keeping the reader guessing until the jaw-dropping finale.

Review

“Assured, compelling, and hypnotically readable―with a twist at the end I guarantee you won’t see coming.” ―Lee Child, New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Line

My Review

Told in first person, this story has so many twists and turns it will leave you breathless!

Joe Lynch is a school teacher, husband and father. His life is pretty near perfect- until it isn’t.

A single event changes Joe’s safe, secure world forever and nothing will ever be the same again.

Faced with a murder charge on a crime he didn’t commit, the possible adulterous activities of his wife-the woman he thought he knew so well-Joe is forced into the car and mouse game of his life.

There’s a surprise twist at the end I guarantee you won’t see coming, and so much suspense it’s almost impossible to set the book down.

I give Lies 5+ lovely kisses- a must read!

Fantasy in Death by J.D. Robb #Mystery #BookReview #Bookish

In this thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series, it’s game over for the criminals who cross Lieutenant Eve Dallas as she investigates the murder of a virtual reality wunderkind.

Bart Minnock, founder of the computer gaming giant U-Play, is found in his locked private playroom, in a pool of blood, his head separated from his body. Despite his violent end, Eve can’t find anyone—girlfriend and business partners included—who seemed to have a problem with the enthusiastic, high-spirited millionaire.

Of course gaming, like any business, has its fierce rivalries and dirty tricks—as Eve’s husband, Roarke, one of U-Play’s competitors, knows well. But Minnock was not naïve, and he knew how to fight back in the real world as well as the virtual one.

Eve and her team are about to enter the next level of police work, in a world where fantasy is the ultimate seduction—and the price of defeat is death…

J.D. Robb is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling In Death series and the pseudonym for #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The futuristic suspense series stars Eve Dallas, a New York City police lieutenant with a dark past. Initially conceived as a trilogy, readers clamored for more of Eve and the mysterious Roarke. Dark In Death, on sale February 2018, is the 46th entry in the series.

My Review

I’m not much of a gamer, but this one gave me chills!

Imagine playing video games so realistic you feel the mud beneath your toes, the noise of the jungle, or the clash of swords?

Four brilliant scientists create the ultimate vid-game company, U-Play, and are hard at work on their next big venture when one of them turns up dead in his own home in a supposedly sealed room. Worse- he’s beheaded.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas has her hands full deciphering this classic case of who-done-it in the world of cutthroat (pun intended) enterprise.

This was a real page-turner for me. I love a book that keeps you guessing until the very end. I was wrong, by the way 🙂

Roarke and Eve are dynamic together. Eve is a cop first. She’s rough and at times brash, while Roarke is the calm to her storm. Their relationship is not easy, which only adds to the genuine love that runs deep between these two. I especially enjoy the rare moments when Eve shows her vulnerability.

Two FBI agents struggle with desire in the shadow of a killer… Ace of Spades by @SandyOwens1 #NewRelease #RomSuspense #Reading @BPICPromos

Ace of Spades
by Sandra Owens
Series: Aces & Eights, #3
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense

Publisher:  Montlake Romance

Release Date: February 6, 218

Two FBI agents struggle with desire in the shadow of a killer, in the third installment of Aces & Eights.

Nate Gentry has been a rock for his two younger brothers since the day their mom walked out and left them with their abusive father. Now that they’ve grown up, he’s watched Alex and Court fall in love and settle down. But Nate isn’t made for romance. He keeps his relationships casual. And getting casual with his partner is a fantasy he can’t shake…

Taylor Collins has feelings for Nate, too—and though they run hot, her best friend on the team is strictly off limits. Until a spark in his eyes says, Go for it. But reaching out could prove to be a bad move now that they’re working closer together than ever, and on the most dangerous case of their careers.

An investigation into a brutal series of murders is stirring up bad memories for Taylor, and neither she nor Nate can imagine how close to home it’s going to hit. When it does, Nate will risk everything—including his heart—to keep Taylor safe.

Taylor was trained to observe, and observe she did. Why else would he be squirming in his chair if she weren’t making him hot and bothered? She swallowed a smile. “Just putting it out there. If you were like any other man, I could be all coy”—she fluttered her eyelashes—“and girlie.” Ah, the ghost of a smile, there and then gone, flitted across his face.“Please don’t ever go all girlie on me.”

“I wouldn’t know how if my life depended on it. Give me one good reason we shouldn’t give in to this thing between us? And don’t say you’re afraid of screwing up our friendship.” She believed that was a part of it, but there was more to his reticence than that.

“Isn’t that a good enough reason? It’s one you should be worried about.”

“But I’m not. It’s chemistry, Nate, nothing more. We’re consenting adults, intelligent, and all that. There’s no reason we can’t enjoy each other for however long we want and still be friends when it’s over.” And yes, she was saying what she thought he wanted to hear. If she told him she loved him, he’d probably ask for a transfer to the other side of the world. She waited, watching him spin his beer bottle, sensing that she was finally going to find out why he’d always held back.

He lifted his eyes to hers. “What if you fall in love with me? I’ll never marry, and I won’t ever change my mind about that.”

“Not a problem, but why not? What if you do eventually meet someone and fall in love?” And that would kill her.

“I won’t.” He stared at her with the kind of intensity that was so him. “When you say not a problem, how can you know that for sure?”

She didn’t. “I’m not looking for a ring on my finger. There’s too much on my plate as it is what with my job and the girls. The last thing I need is a man wanting me to take care of him, too. Or, God forbid, trying to tell me what to do.”

“And you think I would?”

No, he was a man who wouldn’t make those kinds of demands from her. He was also the one man she thought she could love for the rest of her life. But she’d cut her tongue out before ever admitting that to him.

“I don’t intend to find out whether you would or not since I’ll never give you that kind of power over me.” He still hadn’t explained why he was so adamant that he’d never marry, but she’d drop it for now. “So, what do you say?” She reached across the table and trailed her finger over his arm. “Are we going to do it or not?”

He laughed. Actually freaking laughed. She felt like she’d just won the lottery, but she didn’t make a big deal over it. Knowing Nate, if she did, he’d never laugh again. Her heart pounded as she waited for his answer. She hadn’t intended to push the issue tonight, but she only had so much patience. If he said no, it would be the last time she’d ask. If nothing else, she had her pride.

“Well?”

Without answering, he pulled a twenty out of his wallet, dropped the money on the table, and then grabbed her hand, tugging her up with him. Mere seconds later, they were outside. He kept walking, not saying a word, and even with her long legs, she had to jog to keep up with him. She figured one of two things were about to happen. First option, he was going to put her in her car, tell her to stop asking to have sex with him, and then send her on her way. What she hoped would happen was that he’d finally caved.

When they reached her car, he backed her against the door, put his hands on the roof, caging her in, and said, “I give up.”

Then his mouth came down on hers. Like the first two times he’d kissed her, this one was possessive, demanding, and hungry. But so much more, as if now that he’d agreed to this, he was all in. He tasted like malt beer and wintergreen. Tangy and delicious.

Her legs lost the will to hold her up, only the car at her back and Nate pressed against her front keeping her on her feet. When he pulled away, she growled in displeasure, and another ghost smile curled his lips, gone as fast as it had appeared.

“Go home, Taylor.”

What? “But I thought—”

My Review

Thank you NetGalley and Henery Press  for my copy of Cold As Ice- Book #6 in The Country Club Murders. This was my first Julie Mulhern novel, but it won’t be the last!

Ellison Russell has a problem; her late husband’s bank is in danger of foreclosure, which would ruin her teenage daughter’s legacy, and she keeps finding bodies.

Dead ones.

Set in nineteen seventy-four Kansas City, Mulhern brings the era to life with witty dialogue, a rich cast of characters, and a handsome police detective, Anarchy Jones. (Love, love that name!)

The story touches on real life issues such as adultery, family dynamics, and teen pregnancy.

My Review

This story opens on the final hours of entrepreneur CC de Poitiers imperfect life. She’s condescending, cold, and vicious; small wonder someone wants her dead.

The question of how she comes to be electrocuted on the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by people who hated her abusive treatment of her daughter, Crie, leads Chief Inspector Gamache back to the quaint village of Three Pines during a fierce winter storm.

Louise Penny is a master at weaving setting, character, and story threads together into an unforgettable series that keeps me coming back for more.

The Murder Stone by Louise Penny #BookReview #Mystery #mgtab

It’s the height of summer, and the wealthy Finney family have gathered at the Manoir Bellechasse to pay tribute to their late father.

The Murder Stone

But as the temperature rises, old secrets and bitter rivalries begin to surface. When the heat wave boils over into a mighty storm, a dead body is left in its wake.

Chief Inspector Gamache, a guest at the Bellechasse, finds himself with a building full of suspects. With the hotel locked down, the murderer is trapped. But a cornered predator is always the most dangerous of all…

My Review

What can I say? I’m in love with Inspector Gamache!

Here’s a line that best describes him:

But what was most striking were his eyes. Deep, warm brown. He carried calm with him as other men wore cologne.

A man to trust.

Louise Penny has such an amazing style of writing. She draws vivid pictures with just a few simple words. Like this sentence about one of the guests at the Manoir Bellechasse:

Her clothes seemed to have a grudge against her and either slipped off or scrunched around awkwardly so that she was constantly rearranging herself, pulling and tugging and wriggling.

So visual.

This story is set around a recurring character in the Chief Inspector Gamache series, Peter Morrow and his dysfunctional family, the Finneys.

When Peter’s sister, Julia Martin, is found murdered under the fallen marble statue of her beloved father, it sets off a string of lies and recriminations that leave the inspector and his team scratching their heads.

There’s a surprise twist at the end that I didn’t see coming and so much fresh writing I could go on for days!

If you’re looking for an excellent author I highly recommend this series!

EXCERPT:

A bleak sky, streaked with white, stretches over the desolate South Rim of the canyon. There will be snow tonight.

The grinding of a pickup truck grates through the silence.

A four-door Tundra. Tonneau cover over the bed. Two men dressed in camouflage inside. Fast-food and jerky wrappers litter the wells at their feet. In the back seat, a cooler packed full of beer.

And three rifles, three-inch twelve-gauge magnums, strapped to the padded back-seat gun rest.

Hunters, driving the rim.

The front-seat passenger sets his sights on something moving ahead of them, leans forward greedily. “There we go, there we go.”

The driver follows his gaze, fixes on what he is tracking. Not a deer, but a young girl, shining black hair underneath the hood of her parka. Schoolgirl’s backpack on her shoulder.

On the men’s faces, something crude and capering.

“That’s some tasty-looking pussy.”

“Oh, yeah, that’ll do.”

“Let’s go.”

“Get her.”

The driver swerves the truck over to the side of the road, squealing brakes.

The girl hears the sound, stiffens, is starting to run before she even completes the glance back.

The truck skids to a stop in the snow. The doors fly open; the men are out of the car, grabbing for their rifles.

The girl runs for the rocks, but her pursuers are bigger, faster. Two of them, grown men, against a teenage girl.

They move forward into the strong wind, a military-style formation, heavy boots crunching in the sandy snow.

They pause at the rock outcropping, looking out over the boulders. The girl seems to have disappeared. Then a scrabble on the rocks betrays her. Hearing it, the men grin at each other.

The driver rounds the rock first, his mouth watering. He is already hard in anticipation . . .

The tire iron bashes him across the face, breaking his jaw. He staggers back, howling inarticulate pain.

The girl kicks him viciously in the knee, crumpling him, then swivels as the second hunter rounds the edge of the rock. She slams the tire iron against the side of his head.

Now both men are collapsed on the ground, moaning and cursing.

She steps forward, no longer feigning that youthful, hesitant gait.

She lifts her arm and uses the tire iron on their skulls. Two, three, four blows, and there is no more moaning. Thick crimson drops spatter the snow. Her breath is harsh. Her face is ice.

There is only the wind, swallowing the sound of her breathing.

Cara stands at the edge of the canyon, looking out at the spires of Spider Rock, the vast open gorge.

Below her is an icy crevasse. The canyon has any number of them, deep splits in the rock wall where whole sheets of the cliff have broken away. Behind her is the hunters’ pickup truck.

Their bodies lie at her feet.

She drags one, then the other, to shove them over the cliff’s edge, stepping back to watch each body hurtle down into the crevasse, tumbling into oblivion.

The snowfall tonight will cover all trace of them. Later, birds and animals will pick the bones clean.

Another offering to the canyon, and the gods and ghosts that haunt it.

Today is the official cover day for my upcoming contribution to the Chandler County World

Missing: The Lady Said No!

Description:

There’s something for everyone in Chandler County.

Chandler County is a small county nestled between Lexington and Louisville Kentucky. There are two small towns within Chandler County, Chandlerville and Bourbonville.

Chandler County is 311 square miles with a population of just under 7,000 but it boasts an active government, flourishing businesses, resident’s eager to make their way in the world and an entrepreneurial spirit abounds.

Two Festivals each year are held in Chandler County.

In May the Derby Festival celebrates the many entrepreneurs, horse ranchers and employees who work so hard all year long to make their mark on the Derby, one of the largest horse races in the country.

Visitors come from all over the world to celebrate the Derby Festival with the town’s folk and to escape the overcrowding of the two main cities burgeoning with visitors. With the festival excitement and visitors comes its own set of troubles.

There’s a Derby Hat contest, stick pony head races for the kids and the adults, Shetland pony races, Taste the Derby contest featuring favorite foods from the area, and a fashion show. Mint Juleps are poured with abandon and mayhem seems to follow that. Saturday evening, after the Derby hosts a concert in the park in which a headliner band entertains the crowd.

Derby History

While credit for the term Triple Crown has often been ascribed to Charles Hatton, a columnist for Daily Racing Form, who started using the term after Gallant Fox won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 1930, it really was The Times that began the regular use of Triple Crown

The American classics are the Belmont Stakes (1867), the Preakness Stakes(1873), and the Kentucky Derby (1875), which make up the American Triple Crown. Since the establishment of the British and American Triple Crown series, scores of countries have instituted their own (less prestigious) Triple Crowns of elite races.

Welcome to the Chandler County World!

My story takes place in 1953. My hero, Augustus Grant is fashioned after one of my all-time favorite detectives, Columbo.

Gus has just been called in to investigate the death of a prominent member of the horse racing community. But, when he arrives things get complicated. It turns out, the girl he left behind in order to pursue his career is the prime suspect.

Excerpt from Missing: The Lady Said No

April 16, 1953

Augustus Grant drove slowly down the paved drive lined with towering oaks waving gently in the early spring breeze. A split rail fence kept him company, the boards gleaming with a fresh coat of whitewash. In the distance, he could see some fine-looking horses munching on the blue-green grass Kentucky was famous for, not that he was any judge of horseflesh. A couple of foals, their chestnut coats gleaming in the early morning sun, broke away from the herd, kicking and jumping like skittish deer.

He stopped and rolled down his window, sticking his nose in the air to catch a whiff of how the other half lived. Money. He smelled money. If there was one thing the aristocracy knew, it was how to live in style.

Case in point; the mansion had just come into view. A Georgian red brick structure, three stories tall, with four thick white columns supporting the upper balcony, and enough windows to keep a cleaner busy for a year. It was truly awe-inspiring. Much different from his little two-room bungalow in town, that’s for sure.

Gus pulled up behind the sheriff’s car and nodded to the officer guarding the front door. Sheriff Tromley wasn’t going to be happy to see him. He tended to be territorial over his cases, but the chief had insisted, so here he was.

He took his time, gathering the leather briefcase that had been a gift from his ex-wife, his keys, a spare pen, and his trench coat in case the weather turned, rolled up the window and opened the door. Except now his hands were full and he couldn’t get out of the car. It took a few moments, some cringing when he inadvertently hit the horn with his elbow, but Gus finally managed to exit his Buick.

“Need any help, sir?” The young officer glanced doubtfully at the steep staircase leading up to the double entrance doors, then at him as though he were an old man in need of a walker.

Gus straightened his tie, darn near giving himself a shiner with the corner of the briefcase, and shook his head. “I can manage, thank you. Mind telling me where the sheriff is?”

“Out back, sir. Talking to the widow.”

That made sense. It was an established fact that in eighty-eight percent of murder cases, the killer was someone who knew the victim. He waited until the officer pointed which direction he should go, then Gus trudged down the walk, reviewing the case in his head.

Dead male, approximately forty-five years of age, found on the floor in his den with a pair of shears sticking out of his chest. The Jorgenson family were fourth generation horse breeders, and even had a colt who had won two of three legs in the Triple Crown. Gus had heard the horse was making the Jorgenson family more money now as a stud than he had racing. Nice way to retire.

He rounded the corner of the house, avoided the giant rose bush reaching out to grab his clothes, and sought out the elusive sheriff. There he was, on the other side of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, complete with waterfall. A gazebo provided both shelter and privacy from the house, but Gus could see just fine. And what he saw pulled him up short.

The sheriff had his arms wrapped around a woman who barely cleared his chest, her raven locks spilling down the back of her crimson red robe as she tilted her head to gaze into his eyes.

Augustus cleared his throat and the woman jumped, freeing herself from the sheriff’s embrace. Tromley glared across the distance, hands fisted at his sides, while the woman, Gus was sure it was the widow Jorgenson from the description he’d been given, spun away, tightening the belt on her bathrobe. As he neared, she picked up a pack of cigarettes with trembling fingers and lit a smoke. She took a long drag and exhaled, a blue cloud forming a nimbus around her head.

“What are you doing here, Detective?” The sheriff crossed his arms over a barrel chest and scowled.

“Well, sir,” Gus started, then tripped over a step and almost went sprawling. “The, ah, chief asked me to come out and offer a hand. He’s worried what the press is going to do with this one. Mr. Jorgenson is…” The woman let out a soft cry. “I mean was, sorry Ma’am.” He cleared his throat. “Mr. Jorgenson was a prominent member of the Lexington community.”

“We’re aware of John’s standing in the community, Detective Grant,” the sheriff said impatiently. “There’s no need for you to be here. I just finished my interview with Mrs. Jorgenson and will have a report filed by this afternoon. It was clearly an accidental death. These things happen.” He glanced at the widow and his expression softened. “Trudy has been through enough. She found her husband in the den.” His gaze hardened as it returned to Gus. “I’m sure you’ll understand if she needs some space right now to gather herself.”

Gus hesitated, then nodded to the missus. “Sorry for your loss, ma’am. Take all the time you need. Mind if I step inside, maybe have a look at the crime scene? Question your staff?” He ignored the sheriff’s soft curse. “It’s just that it’s the chief’s orders and all. I won’t be long…” He waited while she made eye contact with the sheriff, and when she began to shake her head, he added, “Or I could start with you, ma’am, if you would prefer?”

“Grant,” the sheriff warned.

Mrs. Jorgenson sighed and stubbed out her cigarette on an elegant cut-crystal ashtray in the center of the table. “It seems you’re determined, Detective. Go ahead then, question my staff. But don’t get in their way. They have jobs to do, same as you.” She sank into a deeply piled armchair and crossed slender legs, making no effort to stop the robe from sliding open dangerously high on her thigh. And of course she caught him looking. A feline smile temporarily chased the shadows from her eyes. “Anything else, Detective?”

A cold shower maybe?

Gus cleared his throat and fumbled with his briefcase. “Uh, no, thank you, ma’am. Appreciated.”

He turned and stumbled down the same dang step he’d tripped on earlier. He couldn’t imagine any man voluntarily giving her up, but you never knew what happened behind closed doors. He’d have a quick look-see, talk to a couple staff members, and be on his way. Case closed.

Except—it kind of bothered him. Shouldn’t she be a little more heartbroken at the loss of her husband? Shock triggered different reactions depending on the person, of course, but she’d seemed more worried about the staff getting their jobs done than getting to the truth. And what was going on between her and the sheriff?

He glanced surreptitiously over his shoulder and caught what seemed to be a heated exchange between the widow and the lawman. Obviously, they weren’t strangers. In fact, if he wasn’t mistaken, he’d have to say they had a history. Question was; how recent?
