Genre: Contemporary romance

Before you get down on bended knee…

…you should be pretty darn sure the answer will be yes. For ten years, Connor O’Rourke has been waiting for Jessica Dunn to take their on-again, off-again relationship public, and he thinks the time has come. His restaurant is thriving, she’s got her dream job at Blue Heron Vineyard—it’s the perfect time to get married.

When he pops the question, however, her answer is a fond but firm no. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Jess has her hands full with her younger brother, who’s now living with her full-time, and a great career after years of waitressing. What she and Connor have is perfect: friends with an excellent benefits package. Besides, with her difficult past (and reputation), she’s positive married life isn’t for her.

But this time, Connor says it’s all or nothing. If she doesn’t want to marry him, he’ll find someone who does. Easier said than done, given that he’s never loved anyone but her. And maybe Jessica isn’t quite as sure as she thinks…

My Review:

What would you say if the man of your dreams got down on bended knee and proposed?

Kristan Higgins turns this much loved concept on its side when Connor O’Rourke, chef extraordinaire, does this very deed for the woman he’s loved half his life, Jessica Dunn.

Except she says no.

What follows is a heart-wrenching, beautiful story of enduring love, disappointments, and heartbreak.

There’s so much more to Jessica Does, the name she gained in high school, including a love and devotion to her younger brother who had been born with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Connor was attracted to her beauty from the moment he met her, but over the years of their on again-off again relationship he learned that was only a very small part of what made this woman so very special.

An incident in their past stops the two of them from making their relationship work, mostly due to the fact that Jess’s brother, Davey, hates Connor and has a meltdown any time he’s nearby.

The scenes between these three are some of the best in the book.

Favorite lines:

She didn’t look at Connor. Couldn’t bring herself to do that. He said nothing, just held her brother. There was a clear impression of teeth on his arm. Human teeth. Davey had bit him. It was so fucking unfair that it worked, that she was reduced to this, to medicating her brother into submission. She felt like an evil doctor doing experiments on a kid. Davey was wearing his Batman pajamas. That made everything worse. “Don’t let him hurt me,” he said, and Jess couldn’t help the tears that slid down her cheeks. “I won’t. No one will ever hurt you, baby.”
