She’s not going to drag anyone away when she’s not sure it’s necessary.

Is the one he can’t have…

When Nova asks for time off out of the blue—and use of the company jet—former Marine Gage takes note. Of course, he notices everything about Nova. But as one of her bosses, his growing attraction to her is a line he won’t cross. However, that doesn’t mean he’ll let her run straight into danger—and a quick hack of her computer proves she’s gotten in over her head. Gage is coming along for the ride, whether the sassy assistant likes it or not. Nova frowned at one of the computer screens as she scanned the information she’d just unearthed. It was difficult to know if she was headed in the right direction, but Layla’s fiancé, Brody Kingston, might have a couple shell corporations loosely attached to him. But she wasn’t skilled enough to know for sure.

Which just pissed her off. She’d have to dig deeper. Unfortunately, that would take time. And she’d just heard a soft beep beep from one of the front doors, letting her know that someone was here. Considering the building’s security, it had to be one of her own people.

She quickly sent a few files of info to her email to review later, then shut down all the programs she’d been using, grabbed her purse and stood. When she reached the door, she nearly ran into a hard wall of muscle.

Gage Yates.

Dammit. Why did it have to be him? The man who starred in all her fantasies? Of which she had far too many. And why the hell was he here after midnight? He couldn’t be checking on her, could he?

She pasted on a casual smile even though her heart was racing out of control. For multiple reasons. “I see I’m not the only one working late.”

His bluish-gray eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he looked down at her. Considering her height, it was impressive that he was taller. But at six feet three inches, Gage was taller than a lot of people. And the smartest, sexiest man she knew. That brain of his was ridiculous. She always felt a bit out of her league when around him. Which didn’t help her sanity any.

“What are you doing in my office?” he demanded.

His tone made her straighten. Instead of answering, she decided to go on the defensive. Even though she’d only been an analyst with the CIA, she’d learned a lot of tricks during her training. “You said I could use your office anytime I wanted. Has that changed?” Her tone was butter smooth, over-polite. Which she knew would annoy him.

“No.”

“Good.” She slid past him, unable to avoid contact as her breasts brushed against his side. She really hated that even this little touch affected her so much. Especially since it made her feel like a pervert. Damn him, he should have moved.

As soon as their bodies touched, he jumped back as if she’d burned him. Seriously, the man was hell on her ego. They were friends, yeah, and he’d made it crystal clear that was all he wanted from her. Gritting her teeth, she started down the hallway but he stopped her.

“Nova. What’s going on? Brooks said you needed the jet for something.”

She glanced over her shoulder and shrugged as if it wasn’t a big deal. “Just some personal stuff I need to iron out. Nothing big.” Her voice sounded light enough and she thought she sounded believable. Now if she could get out of here before he continued questioning her, she should be good.

“How long are you going to be gone?”

She lifted her shoulder again as she took another few steps away from him. She needed to be gone now. Layla was depending on her. In addition to the shell corporations, she’d found a few images of Kingston with some men connected to a Mexican cartel. Not exactly a smoking gun, but…it wasn’t good. “Few days, maybe. Not sure. Trust me, this is not a big deal. I just didn’t feel like dealing with commercial travel and we have that sweet jet available for use.” She laughed lightly, staying in casual mode. She had to keep her game face on right now.

He simply nodded, but there was an unfamiliar gleam in his mesmerizing eyes. “Call me if you need anything.”

She headed out, glad to be away from him so she could breathe again.
