Focus shifting to the task at hand, Jared pulled to the side of the road and parked in a copse of thick bushes. His GPS told him he was still five miles from the lake. Good night for a run. He stepped out of the pickup and stilled; nose lifted to the sky as if he could scent his quarry. The evening was perfect for a hunt. Slight breeze, no more than four knots, and cloudy overhead, the better to hide his movements. He reached into the box behind his cab, grabbed his go-bag, threw it over his shoulder, and headed out cross-country. He planned to circle around behind and get a look at the lay of the land from the viewpoint of the hills at the far end of the lake. He hoped to end this quick; a few well-placed flash-bangs would give him an element of surprise.

His breathing slow and easy, Jared topped the rise just as the moon came out and cast its glow upon the lake below. Perfect timing. He dropped to his stomach and pulled the NVG’s from his pack. Yep, just as he remembered, the cabin sat with its back facing him, squat against the hill he’d just climbed. A faint trail of smoke from the brick chimney proved someone was in residence, and he didn’t think it was the Fowlers. He sent a quick text to Adam, their resident sniper. No answer. Not surprising out here, they’d been lucky to catch Barnikov’s signal when it went out. He needed to get into a better position to see the front of the cabin. The only problem—it faced the lake. Jared’s mouth twisted into a shark’s smile. Ol’ Sergei wouldn’t be expecting anything in the water. Especially a SEAL.

He turned and made his way down the backside of the hill, grateful when the scudding clouds laid a thick blanket over the moon. Earlier, he’d set the bulk of his explosives close to the road. The plan—to make Barnikov think he was under siege should he try to escape. Jared worked his way around to the far side of the lake then carried the rest of the grenades with him down to the water’s edge. He stripped down to his bvd’s, all the while keeping a watchful eye on the cabin across the lake. He’d always been a water baby, but a mountain lake in the fall was bound to be its own form of Hell Week so he was glad he had his wetsuit in his pack.

One last fruitless try to send out a text to his team and Jared slid into the icy water with barely a ripple. He’d been right, it was fricken cold. NVG’s in place, he power-stroked his way across the expanse, approximately a mile in width by his best guess. Fifty feet from shore he slowed, treading while he focused his goggles on the lone front window. The covered porch made it difficult to detect movement, but then a tall shadow blocked the flickering light coming from behind the curtained glass. Jared dropped down until his eyes were level with the surface of the lake. The last thing he wanted was to get caught out here with no cover.

Briefly he considered waiting until the rest of the team were in place, but anxiety was riding him hard. He needed to give Annie back her son. Their son. Knowing it was foolhardy, he lifted one hand clear of the dark water and threw the rock he’d carried with him toward the side of the cabin. It pinged off the step. The light inside snapped off. There was a sudden stillness to the very air. Then the door creaked open and a dark figure stepped out in a low crouch, leading with a gun. Either there were two criminals on the loose in the same general area, or Jared had just found his man.
